exciting, touching, and satisfying By A358XP3X4U0X45 on 2005-12-02
People who say that this movie is a ripoff of Blue Lagoon either haven't seen Blue Lagoon or haven't seen this movie. I suspect that they are merely quoting Leonard Maltin or some other uninformed source who doesn't bother to watch movies before reviewing them.
The only thing this movie and Blue Lagoon have in common is atrocious dialogue. But whereas Blue Lagoon is atrocious dialogue all the way, in this movie the idiot-level talk occurs only in certain scenes. If you copy the scenes that are NOT idiotic onto a blank videotape, you'll have a five-star movie that is one hour and twenty-three minutes long with no story elements left out, no love scenes left out and no nudity left out. The stupid scenes are brief but numerous, so fast-forwarding over them is tedious.
The story of this movie is actually pretty good. It contains action scenes, love scenes, playing scenes, scenes of people being human. And all of it is quite credible, given the time and society. The nude scenes are also done quite naturally. There is no teasing, no three-second breast shots, and no shoving in the nudity for its own sake. Also, there is a fair amount of nudity, not the usual throwing in a single shot to get the R rating. And it is not drenched in hostility like the so-called "art" movies or other pretentious fare. The crisis and resolution are believable and satisfying. The music is far above average.
As to versions, if you have the videotape, there is little to be gained from buying the DVD. It's semi-widescreen, but that adds little. Both are mono, even though the DVD claims to be stereo. The sound and picture quality are quite decent on both media.
Bottom line: with the idiot-talk scenes cut, this is a rare movie, exciting, touching, and satisfying.
More please By A26WVK274IA7DN on 2006-08-22
This is a blatant rip-off of "The Blue Lagoon," which I would normally find reprehensible. Since Phoebe Cates appears nude in this, however, I will overlook it. The fact she is onscreen most of the time makes this a must-own DVD. There is no reason to sit through the entire insufferable mess, just fast forward the movie to watch the fabulous Phoebe. The Classian DVD has very respectable picture and sound, with removable Korean subtitles. Yes, Aames' Willie is blurred, but again I am not complaining. I really don't know what seven minutes were cut, if any, from the original 100 minutes for this release. I don't recall anything additional from the times I first viewed it about twenty years ago, so it is likely nothing involving the glorious Miss Cates. Perhaps one day the entire 100-minute version, if it exists, will be released. Until then, scrape together $15 to get this Classian DVD and enjoy!
Hotter than Hades! By AT27MDZLW2NK5 on 2005-09-13
Sure it's a rip-off of Blue Lagoon but Phoebe Cates is SUPER HOT and naked throughout the entire movie. What else could you want? Nice to see this on DVD. Blows away the old VHS version for sure.
Paradise NOT Uncut By A287IR9Y2H7E24 on 2005-09-11
Several images are blurred out. Do not purchase this unless you want a censored version. The VHS version from Astro Video is uncut with no images blurred and has the original music.
5 stars for Phoebe! By AUQW0MGU0OFI5 on 2006-02-17
But it's downgraded to four becuase the movie itself is very ordinary.
It starts off interesting, and the first half isn't bad, but it gets more boring as it goes along, and the ending is a bit of an anti-climax.
I have the Korean import, and the only thing censored is Aames's genitals, which concerns me little, and probably doesn't concern you.
It only actually runs for 90 minutes, but there's already plenty of nudity and sex in it (more than I expected), so I'm personally not too fussed about the 'uncut or not' issue...
- A Softcore Porn Children's Film?!
     By A3JWM4PWS3WZOM on 2006-08-03
I admit it. I only bought this movie for one reason: the lovely Phoebe Cates is topless in much of the movie. (Okay, so make that two reasons.) On this point, I was not disappointed.
That said, I made the mistake of trying to watch this turkey of a movie from beginning to end. I believe the makers of this movie were confused about who their target audience is.
On one hand, the film contains a lot of nudity and sex. On the other, the film features dumbed-down, bad dialogue and patently groan-worthy attempts at humor, the kind of humor that only 5 year old children would find amusing. Really, the scenes with the monkeys were as childish as they were totally out-of-place in a softcore porn flick.
- All stars are for Phoebe Cates
     By A1IN15K0CELR10 on 2007-06-12
I rated this movie with 5 stars not to mention how the story written good or bad, or the performance of actors. But this is the first effort of Phoebe Cates and she shine in whole the movie. She acted very natural as real life, her body was so perfect. In fact, she never be such focus and pretty in other movies later. This movie should be rated as 5 stars if you like Phoebe Cates, a must to all fans.
- Interesting on its own
     By AX5WSHD1U2ANF on 2007-07-29
I am feeling generous, and giving it perhaps more stars than it deserved. It certainly was not Oscar material, but it also is not a simple rip off the the Blue Lagoon. One of the first things one has to do is reject geography. Where they find their oases in relation to where they got into problems is not rational, as some of them are clearly ocean related.
Some of the dialogue is atrocious, but then they are supposed to be quite young, so perhaps they might have said that. And it is based out of Baghdad in the early 19th Century.
As far as a comparison to Blue Lagoon, the problems they face and the perils they have to overcome are far greater than in that movie. They are not suddenly put in the middle of a tropical paradise. And the dangers continue from the "Jackal". Phoebe Cates, who is actually not a minor when the film was made, plays a stronger role, and the scenes of sensuality are at a much higher level than in the Blue Lagoon, and perhaps more reasonable. And for those really concerned, there is a fair amount of female nudity.
It is too bad there is no background information or soundtracks for this film, as there are things that would be interesting to know about behind the scenes. In Blue Lagoon, a body double (who was actually in her 30's) did many of the nude scenes. Were those nude scenes of Phoebe Cates or a body double? Whatever, they are done tastefully, and not unlike what could have actually happened in a situation like they supposedly were in.
- Great Movie
     By A2Q6ILJ2R3X4W6 on 2008-04-06
This is a fantastic movie. The setting is exotic and the story is nice. Phoebe Cates is incredible here.
- Bad movie
     By ARLET8JWRIZG1 on 2007-01-11
This movie was not what I was told. It is a waste of money and I would not recommend it.
- 5 stars for Phoebe, -1 for the movie itself...
     By A306NG42JJRH2J on 2006-04-21
Plot? Acting? Dialogue? Please. You're buying this movie for the same reason everyone else did... and for that alone, it gets 4 stars. The incredible Phoebe Cates is, indeed, both topless and fully nude several times, yet the nudity is actually done very tastefully. (And yes, not to be sexist, if you're a female fan of "Charles in Charge," you also get a glimpse of Willie's willie.)
This ridiculous debate over whether this is a rip-off of "Blue Lagoon" (which, IMO it is) is a moot point. You want Phoebe in all her naked glory? Buy this movie. You want a good movie, then look elsewhere, my friends. End of story.
- Pheobe Cates Fans Unite!
     By A1I54PJ6OGJZUS on 2008-06-09
Can't remember exactly when this movie came out, but the premis of the movie is this in a nutshell; "Blue Lagoon" made over BUT with a twist. This movie is great if you like either of the "main" actor/actress.. Willie Aames and Phobe Cates. I think this was done after "Fast Times at Ridgemont High" but don't quote me on that. Not Oscar material for the over-all movie but Phobe Cates "naked" sure don't hurt the eye's any!
- "A Exciting Tale of Young Love"
     By A8X86BQO6O58R on 2008-06-30
I am a big Phoebe Cates fan.I have seen and enjoyed all of her films. This one came out on cable television in 1984.It's a simple coming of age story about 2 young people who find love with each other through a series of misadventures.A pretty good cast.I saw Blue Lagoon.I was not impressed with it.I liked this movie much better.I've seen it several times and loved it.
- Definite "Blue Lagoon" rip-offf
     By A2ADOBD3LNYCG7 on 2007-07-12
And of all the actors in Hollywood, who decided to pair beautiful Phoebe Cates with Willie Aames in this story?
- I first learned to abuse fast forward and rewind of our betamax because of this movie!
     By A1AJYDP4DQRXIL on 2008-08-27
Definitely better than Blue Lagoon just by the mention of Phoebe Cates. I owe the start of my puberty to the Betamax tape of this movie. I feel it's produced in Saudi Arabia, and Phoebe Cates was tricked to go nude, because she was never as hot in anywhere of later flicks that she did. She's even sexier here than in Fast Times.
