  • Perfect for the PSP

    By A5JLAU2ARJ0BO on 2005-04-19
If you have the PSP and a little extra cash, it's pretty much mandatory that you get a Memory Stick Duo card. The 32MB that comes in the PSP Value Pack is just a joke -- unless you plan to use the PSP strictly for gaming only, in which case you don't need to buy a larger-capacity memory card.

(I suspect Sony includes a small Memory Stick Duo card in the Value Pack to discourage people from copying movies to the PSP. Just my wild guess.)

If, however, you want to take full advantage of the PSP multimedia experience, a larger-capacity Memory Stick Duo is just a must. Consider yourself lucky, for just six months ago a 1GB Memory Stick Duo (MSD for short) would have made you $300-$400 poorer. Kudos to Sony for bringing the price down to something we mere mortals can afford. But curses to Sony for not using an industry standard format like Secure Digital.

Anyway, you have pretty much two choices when it comes to 1GB MSD cards. Either a Sony, or a Sandisk. Lexar (another company) is supposed to be selling it, too, but I haven't seen theirs in the retail channel, so the choice comes down to either Sony or Sandisk.

As I mentioned many times in my previous reviews, I still have lingering doubts about Sandisk's quality control, as in the past I had no less than two Sandisk flash memory cards fail on me when I needed reliability the most (i.e., a "Kodak moment" for my digital camera). The price difference between a Sony 1GB MSD adn a Sandisk seems pretty small. BTW, if you see a 1GB MSD for over $150 in a store, you'd be overpaying, so come back to Amazon and get it here.

The popularity of the PSP does make both the Sony and the Sandisk 1GB MSD cards hard to find, so maybe you just want to grab whichever one that's in stock. I myself am willing to pay a bit extra for Sony's reliability, but other people have had luck with Sandisk MSD's, so don't let my experience discourage you from getting a Sandisk. It's just that with the Sony memory card, you're unlikely to have any problems, assuming you don't bite or let your dog nibble on the card.

1GB is a lot of memory. Most PSP games use 600KB-800KB for game save data. MP3 tunes encoded at the most common 128kbps bit rate runs about 1MB/minute, so a 4-minute song will occupy 4MB. Video files are harder to summarize since there are so many different encoding bitrates and options (e.g., 15fps or 30fps, mono or stereo or surround sound). I encode at 384kbps/15fps/mono, and one hour of video takes about 150MB. If you want to encode at the more fluid 512kbps/30fps/stereo, expect about 300MB per hour. In short, you should have no trouble fitting more than one full-length movies on this. Feel free to e-mail me at gadgester @t hotmail if you have any questions.

Because this MSD card is also "MagicGate-compatible", meaning it supports Sony's digital rights management technology, you can use it in Sony's digital audio players that take Memory Stick Duo or the full-sized Memory Stick. An adapter is included in the package so if you have Sony gear that only takes the original, full-sized Memory Stick (e.g., most Sony miniDV camcorders and digital cameras), you can stick the smaller Memory Stick Duo into the adapter and then insert the adapter into the gizmo.

  • One card Many applications

    By AIIHOI3SOYJPT on 2006-01-23
I'm a Sony fan so I own four sony cameras... the newest one the Hi-def HDR-HC1 uses the Memory stick Pro Duo. The great thing about this card is that with the included adapter I can use this in all my other Sony products! I actually noticed a speed improvement using this card in the Sony DSC-R1 Digital camera, the time between shots seems much shorter.

  • The reviews say it all.

Just bought this tiny beauty for my PSP and it's awesome. If you just bought a PSP and wondering what memory card to get to replace that 32 MB joke they give you, this is the card for you.

Might as well go with this 1GB card because it's just more cost efficiant. The others are just as pricy. I have tons of songs on my PSP now. Only problem with the PSP is that it doesn't play MPEG 3 movie clips only MPEG 4 but look around the internet and there are programs to convert your MPEG clips. Plus tons of room for pictures to customize your background.

I love watching video clips and listening to MP3's and don't forget the great games on the PSP. Great memory card with lots of room. Don't hesitate, buy it now. (unless you want to fork out the cash for a 2GB stick ;-)

  • Excellent for everything you want to do with your PSP...

    By A27VSN72Z1Y144 on 2005-09-27

If you want to be able to have a large amount of data stored on your PSP, not just save games and images, but videos and loads of mp3s, then this is the route you will want to go.

The stick comes with 945mb of freespace, if anyone knows how computer memory works, this would make sense, so don't blame Sony for stealing your last 55mb. With this memory stick you can save a couple of movies and replay them on the PSP, generally encode your movies to around 300-350mb for a hour and a half movie. And all extra space I have used for MP3s which is great as you odn't need to carry your Ipod or Personal DVD player with you anymore, and you have the games to boot.

No problems at all witht this memory card, was worried about the San Disk option, which I would have probably done if the price was that much different, but for $5, it wasn't worth the risk.

  • Perfect for the PSP
    By A1VO4HYL62UGMK on 2005-10-10
I decided to purchase this unit over the SanDisk, due to the large number of complaints about it suddenly not working. There are many arguments FOR the SanDisk, as it appears to be faster. However, most people shopping fail to take into account the use of the device. This is not going to be used to store hi-res large file images taken from a digitial camera. The write spead is irrelevant! The small file size of the PSP game saves will exhibit no difference. Transferring a 100MB plus file over USB will offer only negligible speed differences.

So, if you want speed that makes no difference go for the SanDisk. If you want reliability, go for the Sony.

I've had no issues with this card and feel I made the right choice. Only reason I gave it 4 stars, is because these suckers are expensive!

LOVED IT! We took a week long cruise and I got over 500 3M pictures and a 10-15 min of video on the card. Amazon was great to work with.

I received my memory card and it works as it should. This review is really more about Amazons 5 star customer service. I had a slight issue with the shipping but Amazon went over and beyond in providing me with a satisfactory resolution. For the second time Amazon customer service has truly impressed me. Thank you Amazon.

  • Tons of room
    By A9RIHXKC60Z3D on 2006-11-05
The Sony 1 GB Memory Stick has tons of room for all my photos. It makes it great when you're on a vacation and you don't have to worry if you have enough room for anything more. You do pay a little more though for the Sony brand than you would a chip with another manuf.

  • Great Card
    By A1BJ8Q0ZNMBSMV on 2007-02-08
This card works with my sony w810i without a hitch. Sony is real annoying with their "special media" but if you can find this cheap go for it. Its totally worth all the media you can store for your phone, camera, or sony electronic device.

  • Sony Memory Stick
    By APLSQWF7ACZPH on 2006-07-05
I have no complaints about Amazon on this item, but I do with Sony, because their Memory Stick is not "regular" sized. It does not fit into my HP memory stick slot, so I have to use a cable connection with my Sony Camera. My previous digital had a standard size memory stick that slid right into my computer. I gave that camera to my son, who loves that feature also for his computer. It's strange to me that Sony would choose not to be a standard size in this memory stick business. It just does not make sense to me.

  • Perfect for vacation!
    By A1XE1MK7R40SA0 on 2006-08-02
We ordered this item to go with our new Sony digital camera. We drove all around Colorado and this memory stick was perfect for storing all our pictures. We even were able to do a 'slide show" on our computer for our family and friends after we got home!

  • Sony Memory Stick
    By A3V2H0VECBIAFW on 2006-11-12
This is definitely a great investment. I can take as many pictures as I want to and not have to worry that the stick is getting full. I have two sons who also like to take pictures and in the past I would have to take my pictures off the stick so they could use it to take their pictures because the stick we were using had less memory and got full really fast. Now I can leave my pictures on the memory stick as long as I want to, until I'm ready to download them or delete them. Everyone should start off with a 1GB memory stick because it's convenient and really worth the money spent.

  • Genuine Sony memory stick
    By AFWTFYB9ZRPDU on 2007-02-06
    The genuine item works well.
BE SURE TO BUY ONLY DIRECTLY FROM AMAZONS OWN WAREHOUSE. The number of counterfeit items out there is amazing. Be sure to accept only factory sealed packaged units, it can be difficult to tell the real thing from a a fake.
Clue; A fake memory stick often will not fit the camera slot exactly or provide the satisfying click when installed properly. Be aware.
Amazon has a help page devoted to identifying counterfeit units.

  • My first got melted, but i still got another!
    By A3VWYLQJC3Y7IM on 2007-08-06
I bought a Sony camera, and so I also bought this memory stick. I had used the regular memory sticks before in my HP laptop with its internal memory card slots.

I had never had a problem, but one night I started to smell a melting plastic smell and realized my computer had gotten very hot. I realized the smell was coming from my memory card reader slot.. and took the memory card out.

I then looked over the memory card and saw a brown scorch mark, then I attempted to take out the actual memory card from the memory stick adapter and realized it had been fused together by the heat.

I was very pleased when dealing with Sony on this issue. The man I spoke with told me to mail it in and i would be reimbursed with a new memory card, even without my receipt of purchase.

At one point I did receive an email from Sony stating that I would need to pay a fee for the new card but i politely called the return call number and explained that I had been promised this service would be free and reminded the company that I thought a free memory card was the least they could do after such a fire hazard... and I recieved the new card shortly after

Anyway... I am very happy with how many pictures this card can hold.. and it makes it easier when i forget to upload all of my photos right away.. because there is quite enough memory!

  • it's good and works well
    By A13NRQUCTZ0LEY on 2007-09-15
it's in very good one, and I think it's enough for me to use, I can record 400 picture in this card. And what's the most important it works very well.

  • Great product at Amazon's amazing price point.

  • Write speed is a joke
    By A20SYE41026L6I on 2005-10-22
It may be that I got a dud, but while my Sony card reads at over 5Mbps I can only write to it at 60-100Kbs so copying a video file over to my PSP now takes forever. My old Sandisk 256Mb card was a lot faster.

  • Works great with the PSP !
