Seether's follow-up to their promising, moderately successful 2002 debut, Disclaimer, and its spottier, hastily repackaged 2004 sequel, was reportedly beset by fighting with their label--friction that dictated everything from profanity-free lyrics to a title change (the original name was the telling Catering to Cowards.) Yet the band effectively rises above those constraints, if only by largely sticking to Disclaimer's tried-and-true formula of seasoning the generous blasts of angst-metal (such as the raging opener "Because of Me") that are its true stock in trade with more evocative ballads like "The Gift" and "Plastic Man." The latter tracks hearken back to "Broken," singer Shaun Morgan's duet with girlfriend and Evanescence singer Amy Lee, yet find their own restless, emotive substance without her. --Jerry McCulley MPN: 13115 - UPC: 601501311529

  • Seether's Seething Sophmore Album

    By AZSN1TO0JI87B on 2005-05-27
Seether's second album, "Karma And Effect" has officially arrived, atfer being put off a bit too long. Around the time they probably should have released the follow-up to 2002's "Disclaimer," they received some late-blooming success, thanks to a re-working of the track "Broken" which featured Evanescence frontwoman (and Seether frontman Shaun Morgan's significant other) Amy Lee on background vocals. Instead of a new album, we got a remixed and repackaged version of "Dislaimer," simply titled "Disclaimer II." Sure, it featured some bonus tracks, but brand new material is what we all wanted, and finally, it has arrived.

Seether seem more than a little annoyed by their success, and as such, haven't altered their sound or style one bit, which unfortunately is a double-edged sword. Regardless, they must be commended for their efforts, as most hard-rock bands that receive success for showing a lighter side tend to soften up in time (we'll forgive Staind however, as their frontman actually found happiness). That's just not the case here. The same group that made "Disclaimer" re-appears on this new album. And yes, I do see the irony in that statement, as there are two new members in the band. All thirteen tracks on "Karma And Effect" sound like they were made just to please Seether's fanbase, and they definitely will. 3/4 of the album is made up of agressive, but infectious, rockers in the same vein as "Gasoline" or "Needles." Sure, there is the catchy radio-fare of "Remedy" and "I'm The One," but other songs, such as the album opener "Because Of Me" and "Burrito" (which apes lyrics from the aformentioned "Needles") will rip up your speakers. For fans of "Driven Under" and "Fine Again," songs like "The Gift," "Never Leave," "Tongue" and "Plastic Man" are perfect successors and are destined to become classics. The main problem, however, with this album is that is just feels too familiar. The stubborn attitude and resistance to change becomes a big problem, as it feels like we are just listening to the same album again. Hell, the album even begins heavy and ends soft, just like it's successor. Some of the riffs are a bit tired, and the lyrical content gets a little redundant as well, as Shaun seems too insistent on taking strikes at the music industry and their record label -- which reportedly instructed him not to swear, to tone down the album cover and change the name, which was originally "Catering To Cowards."

However, with all flaws aside, it's still a solid follow-up, and hopefully it should continue to ride the wave of success that got started last year. Fans of the band would be hard pressed to not find something on here they like, and each of the thirteen tracks could easily be a hit, which is hard to pull off. So the bottom line is, if you liked "Disclaimer" and are hungry for more, "Karma And Effect" will satisfy your appetite.

  • Actual 3.5/5. A follow up to Disclaimer 2

    By A3UZHPT6414PS0 on 2005-09-06
This is Seether's sophomore album 'Karma And Effect' that includes 13 brand new songs from the trio band headed by Shaun. Shaun's girlfriend is Amy Lee of Evanescence. What is not widely know was the Ben Moody (co-founder of Evanescence) left after Amy and Shaun became a couple. Amy and Shaun shot the magnificient song 'Broken' together and it was this duel performance that brought 'Seether' its much sought after fame and recognition. This album is not as fine as Disclaimer was but it is still a solid follow up release. The hit song of this album is 'Remedy' that is going to become a hit in the nu-metal scene. The music sound and theme of this CD sounded much like the heavy rock/metalic sounds of 'Staind'. If they were trying to immitate Staind, they didn't do their homework well enough. Other songs worth listening to were 'Given', 'Simplest Mistake' and 'Diseased'. For me the most enjoyable part of the album was the last 4 songs. They were a lighter shade of Seether and show that this band is evolving and their next album may be their best yet.

  • "I'm sure I will bleed sincerely"

The reason I bought this CD was for the track "Remedy." It would play often on a local hard rock station and every time I heard it I knew I wanted to check out the CD. I finally jotted down as many lyrics I could and did a search and found Seether. I loved the first two tracks right away but wasn't sure about the rest of the CD. I had recently purchased "One X" by Three Days Grace and had been listening to that constantly for several weeks. I think I immediately compared the two CDs and didn't think "Karma and Effect" measured up. The more I listen to Seether's CD, though, the more I like. The booklet is very creative. The pages are artwork or strange photographs and, in between, are matted, semi-transparent, plastic sheets with the lyrics printed in silver. I thought that was cool at first until I tried to read them. Even with paper underneath, they're difficult to read. Oh well, at least they're trying to be different. There is a photo of the band behind the CD holder. Now for the tracks:

"Because of Me": Awesome opener! Energetic and explosive with catchy hooks and chorus. Like "Remedy," it grabbed me right away and wouldn't let go.
"Remedy": The reason I bought this CD! The verses sound a lot like Nirvana's "Come as You Are" (it almost sounds like Kurt Cobain's singing, too). This track flat out rocks!
"Truth": Slower verses that picks up into a hard rockin', yet catchy chorus. The additional guitar during the final chorus is awesome! Heavier than other tracks here. Becoming one of my favorites.
"The Gift": The beginning offers a slow verse with nice guitar accompaniment followed by an accessible, power chorus. Has almost a country flavor (it's not country, don't worry). It is nice but it does tend to drag. It is 5:34 and sounds every bit that long.
"Burrito": One of the heavier tracks here. It has a very dark sound like Tool.
"Given": This is a more accessible track than "Burrito" but does incorporate some Korn/Ill Nino-like screams.
"Never Leave": A slower, power song that really sticks in my head for better or for worse.

"World Falls Away": Rocker! The guitar accompanying the verses is a highlight. Then some Korn/Ill Nino-like screams to build the intensity. The one line at the end "I'm just like you, just not as cool" (the line throughout the track is "Just not a fool") is so mundane.
"Tongue": The track begins with the line "Well the tongue inside my mouth is not for sale" (uh, OK). Another slower, power song but this one has an excellent chorus.
"I'm the One": Now we're rocking! This may be my favorite on this CD (it's right up there with the first two tracks, anyway). Check out these lyrics: "Here she's coming and she's drunk again / She's only seventeen / Here daddy said `Well that's enough of that come be my little queen' / And now he's touching her wrong again / He's going to give her disease / He never wanted it anyway / He only does as he please / Won't you tell her that I said I'm the one / I couldn't hurt her like everyone / And tell her that I said I'm the one / And I don't deserve her." Killer!
"Simplest Mistake": Another heavy track. Has some bursts of intensity but has a lighter, catchy chorus.
"Diseased": This is a different-sounding track. It has soft, dark, mysterious guitar-work. Like "Burrito," it is very Tool-like.
"Plastic Man": A Kurt Cobain-sounding ballad. I checked the song credits to see if he wrote it as the lyrics are not included in the booklet. He didn't write it. Anyway, it is a gorgeous track with beautiful guitar-work.
Hidden Track: Just some quirky guitar and singing in another language. Not really worth the 5 minute wait.

  • in response to A Kid's Review

    By A13USKZH8U4SQJ on 2005-12-06
Wow. I'll I have to say is this...why the heck does "A Kid" seems to praise Seether, Staind, and My Chemical Romance all the while bashing popular bands like Breaking Benjamin and Nickelback. That's pretty amuzing, actually. If one considers Nickelback to be in poor taste, has he ever listened to "remedy" by seether? It sounds like it was taken straight off of a nickelback album. So I sit here at my computer, confused and befuddled as to why A Kid has written such rediculous reviews in opposition of each other. Dude, honestly, these reviews are people's OPINIONS. I don't mind other people having an opinion different from my own, however when someone decides that his opinion is better than or more valuable than another person's, that's ignorant and lame. I respect A Kid's appreciation for Seether, because I think they are an amazing band myself, but I also appreciate Breaking Benjamin, Nickelback, and others that he has so hastily bashed with no reason other than basically saying, "they suck." Seriously, man, stop being so "this is how it is" all the time and let other people have their freakin opinion!

Since this is a review, I suppose I should write why I like this album....I enjoy the tough riffs and hard sound at the beginning of the album, and really like the cooler, calm tone the cd takes towards the end. I really hope seether produces a third album, and I hope that it contains even more "soft" stuff, while maintaining an amount of solid rock in order to please fans of every style.

  • Wow, what's with all the 5 star reviews?

    By A394O3QUQ675PI on 2005-07-29
This band sucks. There really isn't much more to say about it. Comparable to Nickelback and similar wuss bands.

  • Great "complete listen" album from Seether
    By A26OPQW7M4O6IY on 2005-10-14
This album was worth the wait. You will probably find yourself listening to all the tracks instead of skipping around like most albums in this genre. Each song on here sounded like they put in a lot of effort in both vocals and music. Good buy.

ATTENTION BRIAN RIEWER who wrote a negative rambling review below... "a tiny 2 degree sliver of the pie, while being completely oblivious to the other 178 degrees available for listening."

A pie graph (pie = circle) would have 360 degrees not 180 you idiot. If you put as much effort into geometry class as you did that review you might have known. I guess your mom makes semi-circle pies around your house.

  • I'm in college, that means I'm smart and you should listen to what I say (I'm kidding, but seriously)
    By ATQ02DDOXZLYD on 2006-02-22
There are various reasons to listen to music. Some rap (such as Jurassic 5) can be appreciated for their fantastic lyricism. Others (such as Lloyd Banks) don't have much in the way of creative lyrics, but the impressive beats are a draw. I view rock music similarly. My point is, Seether really offers nothing to the game. "Remedy" is a solid song, it's really catchy. It's too bad that the rest of the CD isn't the same. Want proof? I own a hard copy of the CD. On the bottom of the back it notes "Mixed by Randy Staub except Track 2 mixed by Rich Costey". From this, one can deduce that the rest of the CD really is nothing like "Remedy". You'll never know when the song changes, it literally all sounds that similar. Do your sense of taste a favor and just download "Remedy".

  • Ya. This really Rocks!
    By A1E2HDBTAX08OQ on 2006-04-05
If you like nu metal, or the rocking side of alternative music, you should get this CD. These guys are killer. If the first few songs aren't heavy enough for you--- check your pulse! I actually had to listen more than once, but it's hit me.

Play some Xbox and listen to this album... cool isn't it?

  • insane
    By A12F6T24WUZHPW on 2005-05-30
Just bought this album today and im pretty shocked at how good it is. People are definately underestimating this band. Seether is an extremely talented young band that could just about challenge any group out there right now. They're style is tough, hard, and raw but also deep and moving at the same time. Their songs arent "ima slap my bitch around all night" or "america sucks". They ALL mean something, and even better they all mean something different. "Remedy" is a crazy good song. No wonder why its the first single. "The Gift", "Never Leave", and "Plastic Man" are all radio-ready and contatin moving and powerful lyrics presented in a lighter but just as powerful tone. And dont worry, "Because of Me", "Burrito", "I'm the One", "World Falls Away", and "Simplest Mistake" ought to satisfy those wanting a little more power. Perhaps the best song on the album (which probobly wont even be released as a single) is "Diseased" which is one of the most haunting songs by any group I can remember. "Karma and Effect" is the best rock album of 2005 so far, possibly the best album of 2005 so far which is funny because NOBODY predicted it to be. It is only after hearing crap like Simple Plan, The Killers, and Yellowcard where you really start to appreciate Seether. The bottom line is that Seether is an extremely promising band, who may have just established themselves as a strong force to be reckoned with in the area of hard-rock with this album. I look foward to listening to this album again and I highly recommend this CD to not only hard-rock fans but to people who might be sick of the mainstream radio.

  • Way better than Disclaimer!
    By A2FHD90WU0HUHJ on 2005-06-12
As a huge fan of Seether since soon after Disclaimer came out, I have been frantically looking forward to their second album for a LONG time. Dislcaimer II had some great new tracks, and all the old tracks were even remixed, and made better for the most part. But still, it was obviously made to just hold us fans over till they released the new album (Seether basically admitted this themselves).

Anyway, I had very high expectations for their new album, and I was not disappointed at all. This is an AMAZING second album. I thought Disclaimer was awesome when it first came out, but after listening to Karma and Effect, and then to Disclaimer again, I have to say that Disclaimer completely pales in comparison to Karma and Effect. It's that good.

There's not a single song I dislike, and most of the songs are just AWESOME. Shaun Morgan's singing and lyrics are MUCH improved, and his voice is much clearer and easier to understand than it was on Disclaimer.

Anyway, here are my ratings for each song:

Because of Me: Awesome! It's a heavy song, but also very melodic, and a great way to begin the album. One of my favorites on the album. 10/10

Remedy: Seether's new single. Awesome song, very addictive, and destined to become a huge radio hit. 10/10

Truth: Another one of my favorites. This song has some of the best lyrics Shaun's ever come up with. A relatively quiet song compared to the first two, but it has it's heavier rock moments. Has a very nice melody, and a great chorus. Also has an awesome guitar solo. 10/10

The Gift: Some have said this is the best song Seether's ever done. I wouldn't go quite that far, but it's a great song. Has some awesome lyrics, and the verses have a very nice melody. Nice guitar too. 10/10

Burrito: Yet another one of my favorites. The beginning has the same lyrics as Hang On from Disclaimer II, only slightly modified. It even sounds kind of similar too. But when it gets to the chorus, it changes dramatically from Hang On. Another very addictive song, and some amazing lyrics. "My life in monochrome/Wish I could regain control" is one of my favorite lyrics Seether's done. It's just so perfect somehow. :) 10/10

Given: This is a very good song, but it's probably my least favorite of the album (not counting Secret Song). I still really like it, but it's just not as good as the other songs somehow. The verses are fine, but I'm not crazy about the chorus. 8.5/10

Never Leave: A great quiet song. Has some great guitar, and awesome lyrics. 10/10

World Falls Away: My current favorite in the album. It has this AMAZING guitar riff, by FAR the best Seether riff ever. 69 Tea previously had the most addictive guitar riff, but this riff FAR surpasses it. This song has a great chorus and great lyrics, but it's really that guitar riff that makes it my favorite song on Karma and Effect.

Tongue: This song has a very strange name, but it's another awesome quiet song. More great lyrics from Shaun, awesome guitar, and a really catchy chorus. 10/10

I'm The One: The heaviest song on the album. I actually didn't love this when I first heard it, but the more I heard it, the more I love it. A great heavy song with great guitar. It's not a very Seether-like song, but it's good to see them try something different. 9/10

Simplest Mistake: Another heavy song. I prefer this one over I'm The One. It's really addictive, it has a really cool melody, and more awesome lyrics from Shaun. 10/10

Diseased: A quieter song, although like most of the quiet songs on this album, it has some heavier moments. It has one of the best choruses in the album IMO, and the guitar you hear at the quiet moments has a very strange but awesome sound to it. Another one of my favorites on the album. Actually, this one may dethrone World Falls Away as my favorite. 10/10

Plastic Man: The quietest song on the album, and the only song on the album that doesn't have any loud, heavy rock moments. This is another song that doesn't sound very much like Seether, but it's an awesome song, and as I said before, it's great that Seether's experimenting with their style. 10/10

Secret Song: This doesn't really count as a song, but I decided to put it on here anyway. This song is a separate track, but it comes after the approx. 5 minutes of silence at the end of Plastic Man. This is without a doubt the weirdest, most f***ed up song Seether's ever done. It's in a different language I guess, I'm not sure what. But it's not even just that fact that makes it weird: the guitar is very strange, it's a very strange melody -- it's just a really weird track. I don't like it at all, but maybe some people do, LOL. 1/10

So overall, Karma and Effect is a truly AMAZING album. If you're a Seether fan, you have to buy this album right now. If you weren't a Seether fan before, you might want to give them a try. They're a great rock band, and their sound has greatly matured since Disclaimer. If you're a fan of Nirvana, I would definitely give Seether a listen.

  • The Last Song On Karma And Effect?
    By A15QY8PCTUUQRP on 2005-11-07
    Now, firstly,
This is an amazing album!! I love it just as much as Disclaimer.
Now, I vote all the songs as 10 out of 10. including the last song. I just had to put this review on for everybody who think it was just "fooling around" or "no meaning"

Ok, it's Afrikaans. For those of you who don't know, Shaun and Dale are former South-Africans.
As a proud South-African, I'll tell you what it means in english:

Dale, I'm going to sing in afrikaans,
It's the right thing to do.
    Here I go

    Come with me
    we'll leave the sickness behind
    Come with me
    And we'll see what happens
    We are so glad
It's the end of the CD
    Come with me
We want to make it all better
    It's the one that's over,
    Want a glass of wine
    You cannot stay,
As soon as you experience everything
    The mischief's over
And we want a cold beer
    Come drink with me
There's so much to talk about
    come with me
We want to make it all better
We want to make it all better
We want to make it all better
    But we can't
    Shaun
    yep

There you go, the english version. Of course in afrikaans it sound better coz it doesn't rhyme in english.

With hot new rock tracks like "Gift" and "Remedy", the south African metal band Seether proves they are here to stay. The vocals on this one are just so strong, the guitar and drum riffs are contagious and rocking. THE BEST SEETHER ALBUM TO DATE. Seether fans will adore it, also, Evanescence, Stained, Switchfoot, Corinna Fugate, the Foo Fighters, Green Day, and "My Helena" by My Chemical Romance. The album rocks.

  • I like Seether!
    By A28MUVXY4IDNP6 on 2006-02-12
This review is mainly a response to all of you bashing this excellent band in the same way: Seether sounds like everyone else. You have compared them to Nickelback, Staind, Incubus, Creed, Nirvana, Linkin Park, Limp Bizkit, Disturbed, Papa Roach, Breaking Benjamin, Crossfade, Audioslave, Chevelle, A Perfect Circle, 3 Doors Down, Puddle of Mudd, and, since no one else has said it, I would like to include Sum 41.

Yes. Seether does sound like all the bands on this list. But I have an important thing to say to you:

    EVERYTHING HAS BEEN DONE

I'm not kidding. Every new band out there can be compared to very similiar bands of the past. From stupid poppy idiocy to heavy metal screaming, pretty much all musical ground has been covered. The only thing that could be done at this point are combinations of genres that have nothing to do with each other. Obviously this is never going to happen because that would appeal to no one.

I would also like to point out the fact that the bands listed above (including Seether) are quite different. They can each be grouped into smaller subcategories of the rock-metal scene:

Staind, Puddle of Mudd, 3 Doors Down, Incubus, Nirvana, Audioslave, Breaking Benjamin, Crossfade, Chevelle, and A Perfect Circle all are more of the "less screaming, more singing" type of music. They all have good lyrics and decent voices for their frontmen. Nirvana is included here because they are like this if you listen to them. This is the biggest group, and I would like to call them "rock."

Papa Roach, Sum 41, Seether, and Nickelback are more of the "some screaming, some singing" genre. These artists have angry songs and soft songs. I would like to call them "heavy rock."

Limp Bizkit, and Disturbed are more of the "let's scream all the time" type, almost all of their songs involve the lead singer acting like he's trying to become hoarse. I would like to call this genre "unnecessary, but sometimes fun."

Creed gets to be in a category all by itself because IT IS A RELIGIOUS ROCK BAND. Yes, all their music sounds the same, and I guess you can thank God for that. Also, Creed means "statement of faith." Creed does suck, which is probably why they're over.

That ends my summary of popular rock-to-metal bands. Please, please, people, find the good in every band. All the ones on the so-called "List of Shame" have something decent to offer (except Creed), whether it be lyrics, instrument ability, or just listening enjoyment.

Personally, I think Seether has excellent lyrics, has shown by "Fine Again" and "Broken" that they can do softer songs, and by "Truth" and "Remedy" that they can do metal, and is generally a fun band to listen to.

There is a reason why the average customer review on this album is 4.5 stars. It's good.

  • how Seether sound has grown and evolved
    By A2B930UOEFOJKR on 2005-05-25
I just bought this album today and you can really tell how they how progessed since there last album . I think this one is better than there last album even though there first album made me into a fan I really like every song on here ... looking for a song like Broken listen to Never Leave ... Burrito is about Ozzy and it is a good song to rock out to other stand outs on the album are Remedy , Tongue, Diseased, Plastic Man, The Gift and Because of You ... The rest of the album is good also but emotions are spread throughout this album more than the last and songwriting is better ... check it out you won't be disappointed!!

    By A14S34X192BXMK on 2005-05-25
Wow, I have been anticipating this album for several months now and needless to say i was blown away by this amazing cd. I listened to the whole cd on my way back home after buying it and didn't skip through one song. Every song grabs hold of you and doesn't let go until it ends. The lyrics are exceptionally deep and personal. I loved Disclaimer (Seether's first album) but i think that this one wins out over the original. Do yourself a favor and pick up this record, if you are a fan of Tool, A perfect circle, staind, cold, or any other bands similar to those you are sure to love Seether!

  • A close follow up to Disclaimer
    By A1EZUML0EJU6IY on 2005-05-25
Disclaimer and Disclaimer II are two of my favorite albums of all times. There is something about the angst and the torment in the lyrics and the mood of the whole album that just draw me in. It is because of all of this that I had amazingly high expectations for Karma and effect. These expectations were only amplified after hearing the bonus cuts that were on Disclaimer II. Tracks like ciggerettes made me beg for this new album. The one concern is that sometimes when a band has success with the softer songs on an album they tend to gravitate to writing similar songs in order to duplicate that successs. I call it "sugar ray" syndrom (Listening to "Lemonade and Brownies" if you don't know what I mean.)With the success of broken i was afraid that the band would make a conscience effort to duplicate that and ignore the styles of "gasoline" and "pig" from disclaimer. And although after listening to Karma and effect, it is obivious that this did occur, it is in a managable increment. Nothing hits as hard as "remedy" or "because of me" on this album and the album is kind of on a downward spiral until "i'm the one" which is my favorite track on the album. Most of the songs on the album are created out of the mold that created "Fine again" from disclaimer. A happy medium between agressive and reflective, that is very listenable but not headbang worthy. Karma and effect is a very good album and worth the cash, I was just hoping for a bit more then I got. Although if on there next album they can replicate the aggression and melody of "remedy" Seether could easily become one of the elite modern bands in my book. Thank you for your time.

  • No sophomore jinx here!
    By A3V6LN16LZVFZ0 on 2005-05-27
Not to put a ki-bosh on the band, but this is just a superb follow-up effort to a great initial recording. Unlike DISCLAIMER, the band has cleaned up its vocabulary to meet modern right-wing corporate sensibilities, and the resulting effort is MUCH more focused as well. Seether breathes soul and meaning into modern adolescent (and otherwise!) angst. These guys are a breath of pure oxygen after listening to the daily grind of politics and business as usual, never mind the mindless pop-radio crap that passes for "music" coming from the mainstream, sycophant, conservative press. Seether too negative? Is that even possible given the current state of world affairs? I assert that perhaps Seether is merely one of the more RATIONAL (nevermind lyrical) voices currently out there. Seethe me baby! These guys are pure rock (skip straight to #6 and put your amp, speakers, eardrums, and/or lease on the line) as it was always meant to be! Not a bad track to be heard - a "Repeat All" CD for sure! Tell me #13 "Plastic Man" doesn't rival or exceed The Beatles' "Yesterday" in all respects (I'm 47, I heard the original "power ballad" originally). Buy it, warn the neighbors (better yet, invite them over), listen to it VERY LOUDLY!, and love it!

After further review, I'd like to add, this is a really a SHUFFLE CD - put the player to SHUFFLE PLAY, turn up the volume to an appropriately VERY LOUD level, LOSE the remote, and lose yourself in one of the better experiences your likely to have in 2005. You'll thank yourself in the morning!

  • SOOOOOO sweet
    By A2M0IUA3ZBBKS9 on 2005-05-30
This album totally defines what it means to play pure straight up hard rock. Let this be a lesson to all these "hard rock" groups like Staind and Perfect Circle: you dont have to get soft to make a better record. From song 1 to 13 (and even the weird bonus track) it is obvious that this aint no ordinary album. No fillers, no throw aways, no crap. Even the acoustic driven "Plastic Man" is powerful and meaningful. You hard rockers that got soft (Staind, Perfect Circle, Breaking Benjamins, etc.) take a good look at the top hard rock band out there right now.

Because of Me - 4.5/5: totally kick ass song..awesome opener
Remedy - 5/5: the best song on the album..even though its on the radio alot its still very hard to get sick of
Truth - 4/5: starts off soft, gets hard. shows seether's true musical ability
The Gift - 5/5: a softer song but one of the best Seether's ever written. destined to become a classic
Burrito - 4.5/5: crappy title, awesome, thrashing song
Given - 4.5/5: classic Seether sound, incredible intro
Never Leave - 5/5: Shaun's voice soars and the result is perfection
World Falls Away - 4.5/5: Another hard rocking track...crazy guitar work
Tongue - 4/5: Softer, not the best song on the album, but still worthy of a few good listens
I'm The One - 4.5/5: hardest song on the album, powerful message as well
Simpelest Mistake - 4.5/5: over five minuts, different beat. may take a couple listens to get used to but the headbanger in you will fall for it
Diseased - 4.5/5: kind of scary and haunting, slowest song. incredibly well done
Plastic Man - 4.5/5: similar to "Broken" only a lot better
Bonus - 4/5: really weird but kicks ass!

Seether's new album is destined to become a hard rock classic. Judging by the reviews on this website I can see most people agree with me. Do yourself a favor, fans and non-fans alike, take a break from the pop crap on the radio today and buy this album.

  • SEETHER = Severely Underrated
    By A337R45D7IJB1F on 2005-06-03
As I rate this album, it is currently not even in Amazon's top 100 most popular cd's, which goes to show you just how many people are missing out on a truly great musical talent, but it's better for us that know how great Seether is. If you are a fan of any kind of rock, you can find a reason to like Seether, because unlike other bands, they actually are multi-talented. With one more album like this, after such a perfect debut with Disclaimer, they will be pushing Staind for number one on my list. So without further ado, I present "Karma and Effect."

    1. Because Of Me (8.5) - "Do you believe in love, like I believe in pain."
    2. Remedy (10) - "If you want me, hold me back."
    3. Truth (10) - "And now I'm convinced on the inside, that something's wrong with me."
    4. The Gift (11.5) - "Hold me now I need to feel complete, like I matter to the one I need."
    5. Burrito (7) - "You keep taking, taking away, I keep faking, faking, fake."
    6. Given (10) - "And never believe I won't turn on you, and never believe I do this for you."
    7. Never Leave (10) - "She's the one who keeps me all excited, she keeps me begging for more."
    8. World Falls Away (10) - "And I don't need pills, when I have drugs like you."
    9. Tongue (8.5) - "Should I grow another shell, in which to live."
    10. I'm The One (8.5) - "He never wanted it anyway, he only does as he please."
    11. Simplest Mistake (10) - "Watch it blow my mind, it's something I am ill-prepared to remedy."
    12. Diseased (10) - "And if I decide, that I am alive, then I'm diseased and ungrateful."
    13. Plastic Man (10) - "I'm losing hard again, wish I could show you what you think I'm made of."

You can't argue that this is any less the album that Disclaimer is, because it is simply a superb follow up. It's worth every penny, no matter the price.

  • Just another drop in the bucket
    By A15IWMOF4GWMJA on 2005-06-29
The only reason I'm writing this is because my coworker was listening to it at the office and I didn't have the option of slamming this disc against the corner of my desk.

This album encompasses what is wrong with music today. Bands these days, (not just this crap @ss band) rework older bands sounds and steal bits and pieces from things that sold well and call it their own. Which is why this album has no consistancy. When one song sounds nothing like the next... That's a good indicator that the band doesn't know who they are. THIS BAND HAS ZERO TALENT! And to all you sacks of balls out there who think this is "metal" or music you can "bang your head to" need to turn off MTV and go get some fresh air for a while. This music is weak, why not just listen to the radio heavy Creed. It's always fun to see people rocking out to a band like Creed, giving the headbangers sign of approval. Weak.

Save your money and supersize your quarter pounder instead of getting this $20 beer coaster. I'm not just gonna bash this disc, I'll give you better music to "bang your head to"... that is so lame.

For some more original music try: Devin Townsend, Jack off Jill, Refused, or Mindless Self Indulgence. Remember, you don't HAVE to buy what everyone else is listening to.

  • Is it just me...

...or does this sound like Nickelback (who suck to begin with) with screaming added. Except for Remedy, which just makes me switch to another radio station.

  • Arguably the Best and Most Interesting Band of the Last Two Years
    By AKESPLMW8U82G on 2005-12-25
Quite frankly where have I been to not have noticed this band sooner. Both albums are so emotionally charged and so heart felt expressed that I must have been snoozing much harder than usual. The Gift is triumphant anthem, Remedy is a powerful sojourn into the mysiries of life few bands try to explain the uncertainties of life as well as Seether. Both albums leave you a little smarter after listening!!!! Let hope they do not become too content with the attention they are currently receiving. Complacentcy is the undoing of too many statement bands.

  • Just plain great rock.

There are some out there who say that bands should sound the same on each new album, and there are some who say they should change and stay "fresh" on each new album (Tool, for example). Yeah, so Seether have mostly the same sound, same structure, same attitude on K&E as they did on Disclaimer. I say "great". I like listening to Seether because they are Seether. The sound is about the same, but the songs are different. This album is a touch heavier than Disclaimer, which is awesome. But the lyrics are also better and the ballads are more emotional for the most part. How can anyone complain? Well, the fact remains that this is one of the few bands out there who've gotten popular and still, on their second album, sound like they recorded in a garage on most songs. But hey, that's their sound and I love it, so I won't say that it's a bad thing. I would recommend seeing Seether live - they are just so energetic and powerful, plus you'll usually get to hear a great beefed-up Nirvana cover (considering Shaun's voice tends to sound exactly like Kurt at times).

  • Seether is here to Stay

May 24th, I have had my sight set on this date since it became official for Karma and Effect. This has been named as the summer of music, with some great artists releasing there new CDs, and there can't be a better Fking way to kick it off than with this CD.

    1. Because of Me 9/10
    2. Remedy 9/10 (The single of the cd, I had no idea what else I was in for, but this was a good indication.)
    3. Truth 10/10
    4. The Gift 11/10 (The best song Shaun Morgan has written yet, It's THAT good.)
    5. Burrito 10/10 (Your Sympathy would have been a better name but fck my opinion, it rocks.)
    6. Given 9.5/10
    7. Never Leave 10/10
    8. World Falls Away 8.5/10
    9. Tongue 9.5/10
    10. I'm The One 10/10 (The shortest, heaviest song on the album, and probably THE ONE I'll play out the most.)
    11. Simplest Mistake 9/10
    12. Diseased 9.5/10
    13. Plastic Man 7.5/10 (acoustic song to close out cd, (aside from crazy bonus track)

The only thing I can say about this cd is it's brilliant and in some ways better than Disclaimer, can't believe it because most bands with a A+ CD opener, follow up with a chessy mellow CD that leaves us feeling empty and wonder why they even bothered. This on the other hand is an extension of the first one, just plain out Fking good. Hopefully this band will save us from Coheed and Cambria, let's not leave out Good Charlotte. Now with that said, there is no doubt in my mind SEETHER IS HERE TO STAY.

  • Awesome
    By A10LB5WA5W3JI on 2005-05-27
I was afraid to buy this album because I didn't think it would measure up to their last Disclaimer album. Now that I've listened to it a few times, well, I think it's better than Disclaimer and that's saying a lot. Seether is truly a talented band. Buy this album if you liked Disclaimer!

  • Good CD

Great follow up! This is an awsome CD. Its good to see a band that keeps rocking on thier sophmore album. unlike Audioslave's new album which went soft.

  • I must be missing something....
    By AS23XXXFA61H3 on 2005-06-22
I got this CD as a Father's day present from my two sons. (Do I have great kids or what).. Actually, I think they used Father's day as an excuse to get their mother to buy it so they could hear "remedy"..

Anyway, we started playing it and after cranking Remedy, we proceded to search out another song on the CD that was anywhere near as good.. After going through the entire CD, my oldest son said, 'dad just play Remedy again, the rest of this sucks'..

For those of you into the sheer raw power of Remedy, the rest of the album will be a disappointment... Other than the first song 'Because of me' and of course remedy, the rest of the album is just plain boring..

You keep waiting for it to kick in, and other then a few screams and purposefully strained vocals, the album doesn't go anywhere...

Remedy will be the only single that will get any airplay off of this album.. The rest of the songs, other than possibly 'Because of me' will never make it...

Save yourself some money.. Download the Remedy video off of their website, and pass on this album, I would recommend anything by Staind instead.. or even The Screaming Trees, Toadies or Puddle of Mud..
