Wire Gauge Vs. Speaker Wattage

It seems like a LOT of people (including me) over spent on speaker wire because they listened to others and simply didn't know better.
Here is a VERY simple table to help you potentially save quite a few $$ and buy the right speaker wire that fits your speakers. Wire gauge ties directly into the wattage it can handle. Amazing what a little research turns up instead of listening to "know-it-all" salesmen.
Use 16 gauge for 50-100W speakers
Use 14 Gauge for 100-150W speakers
Use 12 Guage for 150W+ speakers
I don't know anyone running 150W+ per speaker in their how, so save a few bucks and buy what you need (which for those of us who'd like to have hearing when we're 60), would probably suit quite well with 16 gauge.
As you can imagine there's nothing special about Monster speaker cable. Copper is copper. Slap on a branding and great marketing and it's no wonder they screw over thousands of stupid people with a 3-10x markup on cables, wires, connectors, etc...
16 Gauge

If you zoom in on the picture, you'll notice that it's actually 16 gauge wire. I received it and can confirm that it's 16 gauge. Wire works fine, although the spool that's held together by two bolts and nuts had one of the nuts missing. It's not a big deal though, and my only disappointment was on my end when I realized 100' wasn't enough to hook up my 7 speakers.

Yes, we had stereos in the 1970s. That was before overpriced monster cable was invented.
This is good heavy gauge wire. Not oxygen-free but cheap. Hey, this is going in our family room; we're not wiring the space shuttle here.
Make sure you order enough. We needed 2 rolls to setup our 7.1 system.
Good 16 gauge speaker wire

I can verify again that this is indeed 16 gauge wire. This size works very well for small-medium satellite speakers. I am using this wire with a Samsung HT-Q80 HTIB. It's working wonderfully and I'm getting nice crisp sound. Unlike the other reviewer, my spool came fully intact. I would suggest this for anybody looking for good, cheaply priced 16 gauge speaker wire.
100' phillips spooled speaker wire

This wire seems robust and produces much better sound than the spaghetti-speaker wire supplied with my HTIB. However, I have marked this product down because the separate wires aren't color coded!! This makes setting up a pain in the proverbial, because you have to mark at frequent intervals along the wire with a permanent marker (well that is what we did) to keep track of which wire is which. Apart from that, seems like a nice product.

There's not a lot to say about something so simple. This is exactly what you'd expect to get at under $0.17 a foot for a small roll: flexible 16-ga speaker wire with a good casing (but not in-wall rated). The wire is a little more flexible than I'd expected (a good thing) but still has a tough casing. I find it perfect for making up monitor leads for temporary configurations instead of hauling around and curling up the excess of my "good" wire I use in my permanent configuration at home. At the time of this review the same wire costs 50% more (before tax) at a well-known national electronics chain.

This wire is great for your surround/stereo equipment.
The plastic coating is flexible and thick. The coating strips easily. The wire holds its shape when twisted.
Can you believe 100 feet of wire at this price? This is an amazing deal.
Buy 2 spools if you're wiring a 7.1 or higher system.

This is a good deal for speaker wire. Another review has stated incorrectly about the color coding. The wire IS infact coded. you can't tell from the picture but there is a, slightly, toughf to make out white line along one of the lines. It is also 16 gauge(not stated in discription)

After checking the price and shipping cost of this product on amazon, I decided to pay a visit to my local Lowes store. Here is what I found out:
Amazon: $16.77+$11 for standard shipping (just one above the super slow shipping)
Lowes: $20 + 1.50 tax.
- hard to distinguish the 2 strands

They strip easily and the sound quality is fine. My only gripe is it's very hard to distinguish between the two strands. There's a very faint white line on one of the strands. The surface is very reflective and the it's hard to seperate the white line from a light reflection. The manufacturer should put a black line on one of the strands or use different colored wire or insulation like other manufacturers.

This is just speaker wire so not much to it. Used it to connect my home theater (bought two rolls), sounds great and was cheap!

It's speaker wire, what else needs to be said? Well, there's speaker wire, then there's serious cable, and this falls in the latter category. 14 gauge stranded copper -- if you can't visualize that, think "lamp cord", only higher quality. You probably have appliances with power cords thinner than this stuff.
Cut it, tin the ends, and you have a nice, solid speaker cable that should outlast the rest of your system. I don't know what kind of loads 14 gauge is rated for, but I sure don't have enough power to cause any problems. If you have other uses in mind, it wicks up solder very nicely and is very easy to work with. The insulation will burn like any other, but it's not too excessive if you are halfway decent at soldering.
Just taking it out of the box, I knew I had some quality cable when I dropped it from the unexpected weight. It reminded me most of the solid copper heatsink from my now dead Athlon machine. This cable is well worth the money.

This is speaker wire. It works well, sounds good, and is available at a great price. I wouldn't advise paying $100 for monster cable when this sounds great at $16. Don't let anyone hose you over on some unnecessary expensive speaker wire.

I bought much better quality Phillips brand 16 Ga. wire at Wal-Mart for about the same price. This is cheap 18 Ga. wire.

Just got this 16 gauge wire today and used it on my Onkyo TX-SR705 install, with banana plugs and they work beautifully. Highly recommended, you cannot beat this price for what you get, I got 2 spools for the price of what 1 Monster Cable spool would have been.

A fair price for a good product. 16-AWG wire came in good condition with standard super-saver shipping option. It arrived before estimated date. This is a good price for 16AWG wire in such a small roll, and beats Radio Shack prices by far... same size and brand at R-Shack is $24.99 as of this date. You need wire?...order it.

- Cheap / High Quality Wire

Like the title says this is pretty high quality stuff for the price - good thick wire - thicker than some 14 gauge stuff. If you're running a 2.1 setup with shorter cable runs this stuff is a no brainer.
I've got one ~40ft run that I'm kinda nervous about, but in general if you're running anything under 20ft anything more expensive is simply unnecessary. Definitely recommended.
