Motorola FV200AA 5-Mile 2-Way Talkabout Radios - Pairx$19.87

(23 reviews)

Best Price: $22.99 $19.87

Its featherweight, compact design is ideal for campers and hikers, and its rugged structure can survive tough treatment. The Motorola Talkabout FV200AA offers a range of up to 5 miles1 for indoor and outdoor communication. With an optional armband and ear buds, the FV200AA is within easy reach, making it perfect for runners, bikers or those who are simply on the go. And with 22 channels and the standard scan feature, this two-way radio makes it easy to stay in touch while you are out and about. The FV200AA uses both FRS and GMRS frequencies providing more channels. This two-way radio requires an FCC license, as do all GMRS two-way radios.

The Motorola Talkabout FV200AA GMRS/FRS Two-way Radios, which replaces the T4500 model, offers active families a simple and affordable way to stay in touch. With an improved outdoor range of up to five miles, these sleek and compact, water-resistant radios can fit in the palm of your hand or into a pocket.

The FV200AA features audible call tones that grab the attention of your family and friends before you even start talking. A talk confirmation tone will sound when the push-to-talk button is released -- signaling when the other user has stopped talking. An audible low-battery alert ensures that you'll have plenty of notice that your batteries are running low.

Note: The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) requires that operators on General Mobile Service (GMRS) and Private Land Mobile (PLM) frequencies obtain an FCC license prior to use. To learn more, please visit the FCC web site.

Customer Reviews

  • Loved the radios

    By A2F9O65H9UF8I2 on 2005-10-07
We purchased these radios for use by our children when they go out of the house. They are very easy to operate, have great reception and were inexpensive. They have allowed our children to have more freedom because they can go to the park, but we can still be in touch with them and they can reach us if there is a problem. I would recommend these to anyone.

  • Reception OK, but Battery Life is Bad

    By A226BS3QSO68J4 on 2005-12-19
I find this product's reception not too bad, definately not for pro but good enough for short distance, bought it for my kid to play and find it easy to operate and quite useful in certain places. However, the battery life is very short, or maybe I don't know how to operate it. Is there a temporary off button? or power saving feature? Or do I have to take out the battery everytime I don't use it? When I left it on without using it, it last barely for 2 days. I would expect the standby time to be longer.

  • Great so far!

    By A1CZSKJ736S3OO on 2005-12-27
I read the reviews on these before purchasing a more expensive model walkie talkie for my 10 year old. For $20, the size and range works well for us. They work great inside our small gated neighborhood. Love that they clip to belt or jeans so they aren't lost...I can finally not worry about where my son is. Recommended if you are looking for a cheaper walkie talkie for communicating with your kids.

  • No privacy codes

    By A3K6USRMUSU7PO on 2007-05-17
These radios are very similar to the FV200R ones. In fact, on the surface it looks like the only difference is the fact that the FV200R are rechargeable. This is not true though; the FV200R have privacy codes. What this means is that you will only hear broadcasts by the other radio, and not all radios that are using that channel - which can be a lot at a ski resort. This feature will also extend battery life since the speaker won't be active that often.
Another consideration is the transmit power, which is rated at 500mW for these radios. Typically, the range is doubled for a 4-times increase in transmit power. Some two-ways on the market use 1000mW of transmit power. This will increase your range by 50%, but will consume more battery power.
You need to weigh range, battery life and privacy codes when making your decision. Motorola is a very good brand and these are very good radios - as long as you accept their shortcomings.

  • no Range

    By A2Y5MUKGIHNIUU on 2006-02-25
I purchased these radios for a back up so to speak for my elderly mother. We live approximately 1/2 mile from each other and I wanted her to be able to reach me if she had an accident and could not get to a phone. These walkie talkies worked great within 200 feet of her house but after that the range lost any chance of hearing her. I would not reccomend them to anyone who needs something to rely on!!!!!

  • Great price
    By AUCID47Q88R25 on 2005-12-09
How can you go wrong with a price so low. They're good for both parents and kids to use. Not to mention they're easy for young kids to operate! Keep in touch.

  • Not as Expected
    By A8S0G58Z5G4G8 on 2006-03-22
Range is very weak probably less than half a mile. Don't waste your money.

  • Fairly cheap
    By A2JN3SIZKZ6V9 on 2006-11-22
The construction is pretty poor in my opinion. Bought these for my boys to play with and they didn't last a month. The boys are 10 and 11. Range is bad, reception is bad, battery life bad.

  • Picks up too many signals
    By A3U029B8Z5WGI2 on 2007-01-11
All in all, this isn't a terrible Talkabout 2-way radio...but it picks up every signal around! There just aren't enough channels on this thing. As for the range, you're probably better off getting a 5-mile radius radio, especially if you're skiing around Northstar in Reno! For the price, it isn't a bad radio - but if I had a chance to do it all over again, I'd shell out the money for a better radio.

  • Es un buen equipo considerando su bajo precio
    By A3HMMAS1HLR2QZ on 2006-01-30

  • Poor Clarity
    By A309BY83O02S5L on 2008-04-27
We bought these Motorola FV200s to replace our older model Walkie-Talkies (Motorola T6220). Unfortunately, the clarity of the reception on the FV200s is horrible compared to our older model. We bought the FV200s because they take regular batteries (more convenient than rechargeable batteries when your batteries start going dead while out & about) and because of the style and the price. Unfortunately, the clarity is so poor that we constantly have to ask each other to repeat each others' transmissions. I do not recommend this model.

  • Purchased for a cruise vacation
    By A3MN64DUO1HKCN on 2008-08-04
We purchased these to use on a cruise ship during vacation. The range was not sufficient to be useful. If you are purchasing for this purpose suggest you look at something with more transmitting power.

  • Just what I wanted....
    By ARCRXNXXPIA31 on 2008-01-13
These Motorola two-way radios are just what I hoped they would be. I only wanted them for my 4 year old to play with, as he enjoys going to different rooms of the house and talking to us like we're far away. I can't comment on how well they work outside because we've never tried them for that. They were reasonably priced for what they were intended in my house, so I'm happy with them.

And to answer another reviewer's question about how to turn them off, you need to hold the menu button down for a few seconds and it will shut off. The directions state it, but you're probably like me where you don't always read them. You turn them on the same way.

  • great for the price!
    By A3FRGJF7OIS7AZ on 2008-04-18
I bought these for my 7 year old nephew for his birthday in September and he loves them. He and his younger brother use them all over the neighborhood when they're playing and when they walk the dog. When my sister has to pick up the littlest one from daycare, she can leave the older one waiting and take one of the walkie-talkies with her while she runs in for five minutes to check in on him so he doesn't get nervous. She liked these so much that she bought two more sets so they could use them for a birthday party scavenger hunt! Can't beat the price and the quality is WAY better than the cheap character ones for sale at kids' toy stores. She's already thrown away two sets of Hulk walkie talkies because they weren't sturdy enough to withstand 7 year-old play. These are still going strong nearly 8 months later and they use them nearly every day.

  • speaker broken
    By AN7IFPTIWZLTQ on 2008-07-03
I don't expect much from $20 walkie-talkies, but one of the units had a broken speaker right out of the package! And the process for replacing/repairing is worthless since it's sold through an Amazon affiliate, not Amazon itself.

  • Great walkie-talkies for the price!
    By A21Q34V1S33PKH on 2008-01-07
Excellent, durable and easy to use walkie-talkies for the price. Great reception and numerous channels to choose from. Can also set the walkie-talkies to switch themselves off after a period of time when they are not being used - save the batteries. Not hard on batteries. Kids love them.

  • JUNK!!!
    By A1D012MH0VEDJH on 2008-02-08
What a piece of junk - I would have given it 0 stars but that wasn't an option. I bought these for my son for Christmas - he used them twice and they quit working. I called Motorola for assistance and they told me to do a couple of things (like change the batteries), none of which worked, and they weren't helpful at all. Spend a few extra bucks and get another brand and type.

  • VERY BAD !!!
    By ADZ2JQ7V8KIHJ on 2008-03-30
In the product Description they said: "With an improved outdoor range of up to five miles". !! I think they should write : "With an improved outdoor range of up to five METERS".

    ---((VERY BAD DISTANCE))---

  • fun for kids, but not huge range
    By A1QAUOIZF5RHMC on 2008-10-24
This walkie talkie set is perfect for kids because it doesn't have many buttons. The range, however, is not 5 miles.

  • Great for kids
    By AE42B98EYDZX0 on 2007-12-31
I bought these for my nephews (ages 2 1/2 & 4 1/2) for Christmas. They just love them! And the buttons are easy for them to operate. Plus, they are very durable and rugged. They've already been dropped quite a few times but they continue to work great. They also have a great range with clear reception.
