Amazon.com Tent Guide Selecting a Tent Fortunately, there are all kinds of tents for weekend car campers, Everest expeditions, and everything in-between. Here are a few things to keep in mind: Expect the Worst In general, it's wise to choose a tent that's designed to withstand the worst possible conditions you think you'll face. For instance, if you're a summer car camper in a region where weather is predictable, an inexpensive family or all purpose tent will likely do the trick--especially if a vehicle is nearby and you can make a mad dash for safety when bad weather swoops in! If you're a backpacker, alpine climber or bike explorer, or if you like to car camp in all seasons, you'll want to take something designed to handle more adversity. Three- and Four-Season Tents For summer, early fall and late spring outings, choose a three-season tent. At minimum, a quality three season tent will have lightweight aluminum poles, a reinforced floor, durable stitching, and a quality rain-fly. Some three-season tents offer more open-air netting and are more specifically designed for summer backpacking and other activities. Many premium tents will feature pre-sealed, taped seams and a silicone-impregnated rain-fly for enhanced waterproofness. For winter camping or alpine travel, go with a four season model. Because they typically feature more durable fabric coatings, as well as more poles, four-season tents are designed to handle heavy snowfall and high winds without collapsing. Of course, four-season tents exact a weight penalty of about 10 to 20 percent in trade for their strength and durability. They also tend to be more expensive. Domes, Tunnels and Sacks Tents are broadly categorized into two types, freestanding, which can stand up on their own, and those that must be staked down in order to stand upright. Freestanding tents often incorporate a dome-shaped design, and most four-season tents are constructed this way because a dome leaves no flat spots on the outer surface where snow can collect. Domes are also inherently stronger than any other design. Meanwhile, many three-season models employ a modified dome configuration called a tunnel. These are still freestanding, but they require fewer poles than a dome, use less fabric, and typically have a rectangular floor-plan that offers less storage space than a dome configuration. Many one and two-person tents are not freestanding, but they make up for it by being more lightweight. Because they use fewer poles, they can also be quicker to set up than a dome. Size Matters Ask yourself how many people you'd like to fit in your fabric hotel now and in the future. For soloists and minimalists, check out one-person tents. If you're a mega-minimalist, or if you have your eye on doing some big wall climbs, a waterproof-breathable bivy sack is the ticket. Some bivy sacks feature poles and stake points to give you a little more breathing room. Also, if you don't need bug protection and you want to save weight, check out open-air shelters. Families who plan on car camping in good weather can choose from a wide range of jumbo-sized tents that will accommodate all your little ones with room to spare. A wide range of capacities is also available for three- and four-season backpacking and expedition tents. Remember, though, the bigger the tent you buy, the heavier it will be, although it's easy to break up the tent components among several people in your group. It's also helpful to compare the volume and floor-space measurements of models you're considering.

Really excellent value! By A1UNMXKAYOF8IT on 2005-10-18
I have two other, much more expesnvie tents -- a North Face expedition, and a Bibler. I bought this one for casual weekend camping.
This is a really nice tent! It sets up easily, is spacious, and appears VERY well made and designed. I'm delighted for the price.
Quick set-up, good quality By A7PNME6IVJT0G on 2006-03-20
Set-up's a snap with two people; not bad at all even with one. First night of camping, arrived about 10 minutes to sunset, and had Swiss Gear tent up by myself before dark with time to spare. (Note: Did a practice set-up at home before leaving - it helped).
Quality of stitching and zippers seems good, tent held up in some fairly strong winds. Breaks down and fits easily into the nice carry bag, which has tent set-up instructions sewn inside, not that you'll need them once you've done it the first time.
The window zips closed. The dome of the main tent is screened and cannot be closed. The rain fly goes over top of that.
Very pleased with the Swiss Gear tent after my first three-day trip with it.
It's great deal. We love it. By A1ESQLXLRIV25Q on 2006-03-22
We just use it while we camp at Pfeiffer Big Sur State Park.
It's very easy to set up and it's also roomy for 3 people (2 adult and one teenager).
This product has a 10 year warranty and it's only weight 9 lbs.
I strongly suggest you to buy this tent for weekend backpacking trips.
this tent's outstanding... By A15OMVGZ2W4OT2 on 2006-11-05
my girlfriend and i have used this tent all over the state of Fl. although it's not like camping in "the great northwest" which is where i was raised, this tent is still very impressive for it's cost and efficency. we were caught in a "gator gusher" thunderstorm before one of the hurricanes hit central Fl. in 2005. it shook and swayed in gust's to 40mph but we never got so much as a single drop of rain inside.
Great Beginner Tent---Pennsic tested and approved! By A8IO0V0GCRYHJ on 2006-08-27
I'm very pleased with this tent. I've never put together a tent before, or lived in one for 5 days. It was very easy to get up and get all my stuff situated. The tent is very cozy, aka small, so I would only recommend this as a single person tent. You could fit two people in a pinch as long as they both used sleeping bags. I used a cot and I was pretty comfortable. If you are over 5' 10", I wouldn't recommend sleeping on a cot in this tent; you won't have enough leg room. Unless you are very short, you will also have to bend over to get dressed. As far as rain goes, make sure you zip up the door all the way, otherwise it will leak (the overhang does not prevent that). After it rained, I realized that I had left the solid door unzipped about an inch. I had some water come in the front of the tent and get some of my things wet. I'd recommend putting a towel in front of the door to catch any leaks and mud from your shoes. All in all, it was a great first tent for a single person. If it can stand up to Pennsic War weather (and it did), then it should be good for most basic camping needs.
- Great little tent
     By ANF307WQAQAMY on 2005-06-14
I bought this tent specifically for the size because I'm not someone who likes to share a tent with others when on camping trip. However, it's still large enough if I chose to have someone stay in it with me, but just small enough to say there's no room when unwanted guests are around :) Great, well-made little tent!

     By A5EWTO53E6131 on 2006-02-21
I purchased this tent because of the price, it was very reasonable. The tent is perfect. I was able to set it up with my young daughter w/o any problems. The quality is great, the size is perfect and you can definitely fit three people and gear in it.
- Great Tent

- Great Value
     By AOH78JWY4K18W on 2006-02-15
I was very impressed with the quality and comfort of this tent for such a great price. The tent is very big on the inside, I put a queen size air mattress in and had room to spare. I love the mesh gear loft, it has zipper pockets so you don't have to worry about your cell phone dropping on your face in the night. Great buy!
- Love this tent!
     By A3R6I0BR72FXWC on 2007-10-01
It just barely fits a queen size inflatable matress but you can get one in there! This is a very well built tent with lots of extra pockets and other things I haven't figured out what they're for yet. The first night that I used it, it rained on us, and not one drop leaked through =)
- Good tent, for the price.
     By A20IG67YYNRU1L on 2007-09-09
I have used this tent for two camping trips lasting 2-3 days, and this has worked awesome. There is only room for two adults in this tent, I guess you can squeeze in the third person. It rained heavily that we had to cut one of the camping trip short, but this tent was cozy and dry. Its very easy to set up, takes less than 10 minutes. Good Value for the money.
- Great Tent!
     By A391HMM4H9EZHF on 2007-05-14
I love my tent! I was the envy of all my fellow campers with my swiss gear tent! Easy to set up and it fit my air-mattress in there just right with a little room on the side for my junk. And the shoe compartment is fabulous so I wouldnt track in any dirt, but not have to worry about a squirrel or bear running off with my shoes in the middle of the night. Buy this tent. Its the best tent ever.
- i like it quite a bit
     By A1061QB8DE8Z90 on 2008-03-04
for the price you cant go wrong...
1. i never watersealed my tent, but have used it in a heavy rainstorm... as long as you dont touch the sides and create seeping it stays dry.
2. flimsy bottom, but if your carefull and add a footprint or tarp underneath, its good enough. mine hasnt torn after 7-10 uses.
3. great carry bag... the worst part of collapsing a tent is stuffing it into a crappy stuff sack with seams about to burst. this one is not only big enough to get the tent back in with all the pieces, it has enough room to add a tarp and a stong zipper to keep it closed. this bag will outlast the tent... a first for me.
4. for the price i could (concievably) buy a new one every year and still come out better than paying $300 for a kelty or north face that typically lasts me 3 seasons. my tent is still in good enough condition that it is going strong into its 2nd season.
5. seams around the D pannel door is starting to show some wear. i have to be carefull not to pull too hard and rip but not bad for the 2nd season in an inexpensive tent.
- Zippers Break Easily
     By A20UTBMNQ9T4YH on 2008-04-06
This tent looks really nice on paper. In practice however...
1. Set Up: Set up was a breeze. It's really easy to set up.
2. Size: It is NOT a 7x7 on the inside. If you measure it only from the end of the tent poles it might make 7 feet. But inside it's quite a bit smaller. I'm 6'2" and laying in the parallel to the sides in the center the top of my head and the bottom of my bare feet push into the tent fabric. I would have to lay diagonally to fit into this tent.
3. Door: The door is really awkwardly made. There is only one zipper pull on it (on most tents there are two). The very first time I used the door, the zipper got stuck at a certain point, which rendered the door inoperable; and ergo it rendered the tent inoperable. Several of my friends who were with me were also unable to operate the zipper. My camping trip was over 30 minutes after I arrived at the camp site because of this crappy tent.
Personally, I won't be buying any more Swiss Gear products since I apparently can't rely on them to function as advertised, or at all.
And in case anyone is wondering: this tent is Made in China.
- Easy as Pie!
     By A21WX5VUMT5WTC on 2007-01-11
The tent is really easy to set up, and takes no time! There are extra pockets on the inside to store your shoes, which was an extra bonus I thought. I get easily frustrated, and setting up and taking down this tent isn't frustrating at all.
- adequate, with 1 minor drawback
     By A34QE46W0ZKSXJ on 2007-05-21
set up was extremeley simple, even for 2 non-campers. the only drawback we saw in the tent were the weak stakes which contorted and bent when they were pushed into the ground. other than that, it was sturdy throughout some strong winds. the size was great for two persons who are "full-figured", one who is 6' tall. we were camping with thousands of other people, and the pockets inside helped with keeping our clutter inside.
- Excellent tent for the budget-minded
     By A17IW1FNE5CPC0 on 2007-07-23
Reasonably light, well-constructed, super-easy to set up, and a bargain to boot! What more could you ask for? Fits up to three adults and includes rainfly and interesting front entrance "mat" (both of which can be left off). With a 7' x 7' footprint it can even be pitched in a large living room for some indoor camping fun!
- So far very impressive
     By AQPLHNOB5GDS7 on 2007-09-08
I spent quite a lot of time online looking for a tent that would be a good balance between price and quality. After reading many reviews i stopped on this tent for the combination of brand known for its quality, size, weight, and of course price.
As compact as it seems when folded, the tent is rather big. We were two people in it, and could easily fit in all our gear. My first camping with this tents was in Adirondack in late August. On the very first evening it rained and actually rather heavily during the night. The tent was dry and kept the warmth pretty well. I did by a tarp for it, to place underneath and i assume that helped.
So far, i am happy with it!
- Perfect for the occasional camper!
     By AJ92JISMCD6UF on 2007-09-12
I recently bought this tent for a weekend camping trip. It is the first tent I have ever purchased, and for the price, the quality is very impressive. I would hardly call it a "three-person" tent, but two people can definitely fit inside comfortably with enough room to stretch their legs. Set-up is pretty straightforward. A quick glance at the directions, and it took the two of us less than ten minutes. We kept the weather cover off during the day (we tried keeping it on, but the tent turned into a sauna) and put it on at night. The nights at our campground got pretty damp, but we woke up to zero moisture inside the tent. Taking it down was also a breeze, and it took less than a half hour for the outside of the tent to dry so we could roll it up and put it away.
- Great quality at a great price
     By A162BBV0C0ZFNK on 2007-10-23
Very nice, very well-made tent. Easy to set up (although you should do a practice run beforehand if this is your first tent.) The entrance has two zippered layers, one of which is a screen; handy for allowing fresh air in while keeping out the bugs. There are some nice little add-ons: a pocket that opens from the outside to let you stash your boots; an inside pocket; an opening to allow an electrical cord. Comes with a carrying bag; I don't think the whole thing was more than two feet long once I had it rolled up and packed.
I guess it can fit three adults, but you wouldn't have room for much else. Think two-person tent, and you'll be fine.
- overall: good value; nice product
     By A1WS0YUIEE0MVQ on 2007-01-10
Well, I really only took the tent out once. The weather conditions were kind of nasty (rainy, wet, cold, etc) & so the tent was wet pretty much the whole night. It wasn't unbearable, but the condensation inside the tent made it a rather rough experience. Nonetheless, I don't regret the purchase at all- very good value & pretty compact; not too heavy. (But next time I think I'll try to use a sealant before enduring another rainy adventure!)
- Great so far.
     By A29P27PSOHVS1H on 2007-03-08
Used it once in the fridged woods of North Jersey. Coldest weekend so far this winter (10deg). Worked great. Shed passing snow flurries. Two adults plus gear. Cold weather mummy bags and backpacks. Was not too heavy to pack in. The carrybag is the best I've seen for any tent. It fit both the tent and a 8' by 10' poly tarp. I would buy the larger one if I didn't already own a Colman for my truck camping.
- A Good Tent
     By AQ5Q8ZOF5N2IB on 2007-06-27
Awesome tent... Took it to Bonnaroo for 4 days... Did not leak in the rain, didn't blow away from the wind, and was extremely simple to setup. The only problem was that the tent does not have sufficient ventilation to remain cool on a hot Tennessee day.
- Disappointed
     By A1NWJPSHY43SD2 on 2008-03-06
This is not a three person tent. It will be tight for two with equipment. We just joined scouting and I thought we needed a new tent. I read the reviews on this one and with all the positive feedback, I thought it was a no brainer. After setting it up as a practice run I am seeing it is not a three person, and barely a two person. The flooring is as thin as the tent side walls. Make sure you have a tarp under this one - and consider one inside too, which is what I will do. Funny enough I was trying to replace a small older tent we have, but it is the same size - and has flooring that is like a tarp. I am going to keep it, as it is light as advertised for back packing - but if you want a camp tent as I did, this isn't it.
- Zipper issues
     By A3JRV6Y47PKPC0 on 2008-04-11
Swiss Gear 7 by 7-Foot Three-Person Sport Dome Cheval TentThe price is right on Swiss Gear tents. The quality is not. I have used our tent twice, and already I can tell that the zipper is about to break. Once the zipper goes, you're in deep water, exposed to bugs, weather, rendering the tent useless.
The design of the door is awkward at best. Swiss Gear provided no means to get the door flap (once the door is unzipped) out of the way. It just hangs down in a bunch.
The zipper is also very hard to zip up due to tightness that puts added stress on the zipper. This zipper is about to go and I'm hesitant to use this tent anymore. Save yourself $40. Don't buy it. It will wreck your camping experience.
A positive...it does set up easily and looks good.

The Swiss Gear 7x7 dome tent is nice. It looks great and sleeps well. It was a no brainer to setup.
- Great Tent, Great Value
     By AJJUO4TBX863X on 2007-04-30
We love this tent! It is quick and easy to set up, we love the carrying case. We have not been out in bad weather, but we are certain we won't have any problems with it. We fit a queen size air mattress and sleeping bag and still have room for backpacks and bags. Definitely recommend this product to anyone who is shopping for a tent.
- excelent
     By A298I8KGTKO5J6 on 2007-01-18
these is a great tent but only for the beach i wouldnt recomendit for cold weathers
- It's light for backpacking at this price
     By A3D21EHE7PLZNW on 2007-02-01
I used it once for car camping. It's not too heavy so it's also suitable for back camping. The only concern is the floor is so thin and I don't know is it durable if you use it often?
- Quick and easy set up - I like it!
     By A2T9T9OHVZB898 on 2007-05-12
I bought this tent as a last minute addition to my vacation. It is light weight to carry and easy to set up. I would recommend this tent.
