Bright, Rugged, Reliable By A11C3I6EKNM072 on 2006-08-08
Bought this lamp about a year ago, when we lost power the neighbors saw the light on in the window and wondered how come we had power. We didn't, this light was so bright that they thought we had power.
Hurricane Happiness By A2I132TW1BQN71 on 2006-06-28
This lantern will bring great pleasure to two elderly, homebound, needing to see to get around and also to be able to entertain themselves ie, play cards, yahtzee, eat, etc.
Great emergency lantern! By ADM3LJPEVIXYJ on 2007-01-09
We already had one of these lanterns, and bought another for our son's apartment. It's a great one to have on hand for power outages. There are two intensities to the main bulb, plus a nightlight. It takes 8 batteries, but using it only for emergencies, the batteries last a long time. We keep it on a shelf in a closet, and it's a lot easier to locate in the dark than a little flashlight, and gives much better light. Every home should have one of these!
Really Big Battery Lantern By A2K33VWYQC9C2W on 2007-01-20
This monster eats 8 D batteries and is quite heavy. In return, it will give you many hours of bright, room (or campsite) filling light. Once you start to use it, you will be quite happy with it. In a major power failure or outdoor adventure, this one is my choice.
The question here is: should I get this one, or the nearly identical Coleman Retro Family Size? The Northstar is only a couple of dollars more, and it is a valuable improvement. The base is wider, making it almost impossible to knock it over. The mantle cover has a wire cage, so you are less likely to break it. The handle on top is also quite large.
Here, I have the same 2 complaints as the Retro. First, the bulb is a harsh blue-green CFL which is rather painful to look at directly. Second, the battery cover and battery case is a big pain.
