    • Great emergency light

      By A27F1N27M1X0NM on 2005-12-29
This is a good light that puts out a nice amount of light and doesn't kill batteries too fast because of the flourescent light. Good for blackouts and a nice handle.

    • Does the job for a fair price

      By A2HAZLUB6OLS4H on 2006-08-07
Appears rugged enough to withstand the rigors of car camping. It's not particularly bright, but will illuminate your immediate area adequately. The difference in light output between High and Low settings is barely noticeable, you might as well use it on Low most of the time to save battery.

    • A great light back-up in time of bad weather

      By A3M6RVUVZOQZLB on 2008-09-23
After Hurricane Katrina hit Louisiana three years ago, local news stations provided a list of items that families should keep handy in case of emergency situations. I found this Coleman Rugged Battery Powered Lantern (Personal Size) to be perfect for my needs. In fact, I'm thinking I need one for both ends of the house to prevent carrying back and forth.

I have not had to use it yet, but I have gone through the procedures of replacing batteries (Oh my, I need back-up packs of D-batteries--4 are needed). The length of time for the lighting is 14 hours on high and 23 hours are low. I agree with other reviewers: it is hard to see much difference between high and low. I have also practiced replacing bulbs.

All is good. I hope I don't need this Colman Lantern, but I'm ready if I do.

    • Served it's purpose well

We took these lanterns on our camping trip this past weekend and they worked admirably. I was concerned that I may have chosen the wrong size however two of these worked admirably for our needs. I would suggest these handy sized lanterns to anyone that is looking for serviceable without size and weight.

Shines brighter than i expected. I keep as back up for hurricanes that cross my part of sunny florida!

    • Disappointed
      By A1BY41AAAZWFYM on 2006-09-10
This "rugged" lantern arrived with scratches in the plastic bulb enclosure. The scratched area is about the size of a quarter. This "rugged" lantern seems pretty flimsy to me. Coleman appears to be unworthy of its past reputation.

    • Very Handy

I just got two of these little lanterns for the winter time, in case the lights fail in Reno here (the winter is looking to get crazy this year). These lanterns are smallish but give out a good amount of light. They aren't something you'd want to go spelunking with but they are fairly durable for home or light camping use. The battery duration is decent and the controls simple. I'd definitely recommend them.

    • Perfect for emergencies or camping
      By A3J998LY0T5BM on 2007-09-24
This personal sized coleman is perfect for an electrical outage or camping. It's nice to have a safe alternative to kerosene. Just keep D sized batteries on hand and you are ready to go! I recommend this for anyone kids to adults. It has an easy to use switch high or low; although, it's hard to tell the difference. Both illuminate well.

    • Not as bright as Coleman 4D Dual Action Widebeam Flashlight
      By ACGTYE5R2EXVF on 2008-05-27
I purchased the "Coleman 4D Dual Action Widebeam Flashlight" for $20 at Amazon to replace the same product which stopped working. While I was at it I bought one of these lanterns. I wanted to have a second and decided to try this for variety, instead of two of the former.

Coleman products have served me well and I like both of these products. However, I was puzzled to see that the light was brighter from the large flashlight than the lantern.

Both products have u-tube fluorescent lighting and both require 4 D batteries, but they clearly (to me) are different in their brightness. Since both products cost $20 and the flashlight also offers both a halogen bulb AND the u-tube, I would recommend buying that instead.

Had I never owned the flashlight version I would have rated this 5 stars which is how I would rate the flashlight.

Something to think about if you want a product to get you around your house when the power fails. Coincidentally, 3 days after these Colemans arrived we lost power for 45 minutes and then a week later for 1 1/2 hours (Philadelphia, PA). These are indispensable to me. I don't do camping but if I did I would still prefer the flashlight for its brighter tube.

Hope this helps you with your decision ... Sam

    • great little lantern
      By A3FU0L1W9NF7EC on 2007-02-06
The lantern is sturdy and very functional. The light is good not as bright as a propane lantern but it does the job on just four D cells.

    • Perfect for many purposes
      By A2SV858H3Z525L on 2007-09-28
We have used this for camping, blowing breakers in our bathroom, power outages, and lighting our way to our neighbors to visit. Easy to recharge, and we don't have to buy stinky white gas or propane cylinders.

    • Good lantern, good price
      By A11DD9VV9G0NPG on 2008-07-24
Perfect amount of light for a moderately sized tent (2-5 people). Has "high" and "low" settings although I couldn't discern the two. No matter. If you're looking for good little lantern, this should be your pick.

    • Great Lamp!!!!
      By A38R27RCETUPBJ on 2008-09-02
This is a great little lamp with plenty of light for reading, etc. I have a small, solar-powered camper and use this lantern instead of my camper's led lights. I use rechargeable batteries and just "top them off" in the morning. If I do forget my charger or batteries, you can find the D batteries anywhere. Many battery powered lanterns (Coleman included) have batteries that are not replaceable. So if you forget to charge your lantern, you're out of luck.
