    • who doesn't love a great cooler?

      By AIWDHSLKGS396 on 2006-09-06
love the retro color, and it's totally durable. easy to clean, a little tricky to carry, but it's basically a portable refridge. defintitely a long term investment for those of us who like a cooler on the porch, patio, deck, or outdoors.

    • Solid product!

      By A2AF6Z17AWF6AC on 2007-01-11
Bought this for a quick BBQ I was having. Packed it with about 30 bottles of beer with ice and it had enough room for 20 bubba burger patties on top! Only complaint is that the when fully packed the metal handles on the sides felt like they were gonna rip off - but they didn't so that was good.

Great cooler. Ice cubes keep their form for at least eight hours (in vehicle). A little bulky but you get what you pay for.

    • As expected!

      By A1LZ206FH5Z1XH on 2007-06-01
Very nice. I got one of these on the gold box special last week and paid....well, I aint gonna tell ya what I paid because so many people bitch about the gold box. I will say that it was delivered today, 5/31/07, in perfect condition. Ebay has a few as I type this. One of them was 'only used twice" and the bid was up over what I paid.
Either way this is still worth the regular price. My wife prefers coolers with rollers. I agree. But for that special occasion, cookout with guests, whathaveyou, this is retro cool! As a weekly cooler for trekking back and forth to the RV, nah! But for that price of..........oh yeah. Cant give away secrets. I will say that it sold out immediately and Amazon released a few more which I luckily caught. I should have ordered a couple.
Nice product for the money even at this price which is not bad with 0 tax and free shipping. Ahhh.....what the heck!!! Just to show you that checking the gold box daily is more profitable than reading your local rag of a bad news paper...59.99 and free shipping! Check the box!!!!!!!

    • so,so
      By A2ZMUA6B31R8BI on 2007-07-30
In no way does this cooler come close to matching the orignal steel cooler. It did keep ice very well but the durability is poor. The paint scratches off way to easy and the thin skin dents with ease. When loaded the handels felt like they were going fold up and the stops that hold them out stright were not lined up with the handle itself.

    • the first cooler lasted about 40 years
      By A1IV5FK7A8RT8C on 2007-01-10
After approx. 40 years the old steel coleman cooler finally gave up. Well, not really, the plastic on the bottom was worn and really cracked. I purchased this one for my Dad because the last one lasted so long. He seemed really happy with it. I'm hoping that this one is like the original. It will be used alot. If it last 1/2 a long I'll feel that I got my money's worth.

    • Coleman Quality
      By A2HSDBG1OAR0IO on 2007-03-29
I love the deep retro red color of the cooler. It is also built with Coleman quality. Thank-you Coleman for bringing back the steel cooler.

    • Excellent insulation, paint scratches easily
      By A14DLOV1GBUUWA on 2007-06-21
I purchased this on a whim when it was a Gold Box deal earlier this month. I am satisfied with this purchase. I used it for the first time last weekend on a 3-day camping trip in 90F weather. I used it as a freezer with dry-ice and cubed-ice to keep food and ice (for drinks) frozen. It did that job very well. It kept my food and ice frozen and I returned home with some of both still remaining 3 days later. It even kept ice cream frozen with the dry ice for three days. It performed very well even though sun did shine on the cooler periodically. The insulation is excellent. However, note that the paint does scratch easily, however that is expected, but I made sure to be very gentle and it still scratched. One last item to note, as mentioned by another reviewer, the handles are not as well designed as they could be. They held, however, I constantly worried that they would give under the weight of the fully-loaded cooler. I constantly worried that they would bend the prongs which hold them in place. I think that they would be better designed without these prongs. Overall, if you're looking for a well-insulated cooler, this is the one!

    • Lasts forever, works beautifully!
      By AP5YP8I1X2K82 on 2007-06-25
My parents have had the 1965 version (green) for 40 years now, and it still works like new, with no cracks, broken handles, etc. I opted to get this cooler for myself and tested it by leaving it in the trunk where temperatures got to over 120 degrees. With just 3 ice packs (those plastic containers filled with blue freezer liquid), this cooler managed to keep a single can of pop cold for almost 2 days. Imagine how long it would last full of ice and frozen foods!

This cooler easily keeps a chest of frozen meat and cold beverages surrounded by ice cold for a week. I didn't think a cooler this compact could do that, but I did the experiment myself and it works.

The handles are strong and unbendable. The steel chest, although it can scratch, is very resistant to gouges and dents, and the 54 quart capacity isn't marred by silly ridges or odd indentations on the inside that limit what you can put in it.

This is by far the best cooler on the market. It costs more, but you can't do any better.

    • Keeps Ice for Days ! Cold and Stays Cold
      By A2ZK9B5ZHTEZMC on 2007-07-22
i remember I had one of these years ago and it kept my stuff Ice Cold and kept the ice for days. This Cooler is no exception. It was put to the ultimate test a camping trip in 100+ temps. It kept the food cold and the ice stayed. Well worth the money over the other coolers out there if you do a lot of camping or are an outdoors person.

    • coleman 54-quart cooler review
      By ARELS50MX4OKU on 2007-07-25
compared to the coleman molded plastic cooler which would keep ice up to about two days; this cooler will keep your ice up to four days inside a 75 degree tempeture room.
I think this cooler is great!

    • Looks great, but that's about it!
      By A3FQITAQI6C2QN on 2007-09-06
I bought this cooler because of all the great reviews. I was so excited when I got it. I thought it looks great, that's why I gave it a 3 star rating or else it would have been 1 star. I tested it that night I got home. I put bottled water and soda and dumped ice on top. That was around 8PM. By 11PM (3 hours later!), I opened the cooler and ice was halfway melted. There was still ice left. Closed the lid back and left it there and checked on it again the following night when I got home. No more ice, just water! I can't believe other reviewers said that it could keep ice for 3 to 4 days! Mine was just 24 hours inside a 78 degree temp home. Did I just get a bad unit?

    • My Red Cooler
      By A1JE1USIIJGN9H on 2007-07-15
I just love the new steal Coleman cooler. I use my all the time. I love the red cooler, reminds me of the old days.

    • just like grandpa's
      By A2Q4V7G2EC78YJ on 2007-07-15
I gave this to my husband for Father's day because he loved his Grandpa's old red metal cooler. This cooler is great, we accidently left picnic items in for 2 days with some icepacks. When we opened it, everything was still in great cool shape. In a plastic cooler I would have had to throw everything out because of heat exposure.I will never buy another plastic cooler again!

    • great buy, especially when priced no more than $80
      By A3E4UUSAMESMGF on 2007-07-26
This is a great cooler -- the construction is durable and there's great attention to detail and design (like the latching lid). There's even a recessed channel in the bottom to allow the water to drain out without needing to tilt the cooler. (The retro color is really nice, too!)

I had cold drinks for four days of this cooler on a single load of ice, even in June's California heat! The key is to cool down the cooler before you use it. So, stick some ice in the day before you need to use the cooler, and empty out the melted stuff before you add more ice to maximize the insulated features of this steel-sided cooler.

    • High quality work horse; good for car camping, parks.
      By AIWDGRTLV7IQF on 2007-09-18
This is a great cooler. It holds a ton, is strong and takes banging around. It is good for dragging stuff for a family outing to the park, or for car camping. Not a back-packable cooler, mind you, but this is the heirloom cooler you will want for decades. We use ours as a mini-fridge in a lake cabin, and it keeps stuff cold with occasional changes of ice or cooler blocks.

    • Coleman 54 Qt Cooler
      By A30OUUXR30BRSI on 2007-09-22
Coleman makes a very good product. My family had a green one many years ago that performed very well. The ones made now still stay cold for a long time, but the only difference is the latch assembly. The lid can be opened even from the locked position. This must be a safety feature for children and is only a minor problem. Overall I would give this product an excellent rating.

    • Great Cooler --- even greater price!!
      By A2EI4V9OHWIQTE on 2007-09-26
This is a great cooler! Lightweight and well insulated - it keeps cold for a long time! If you have not experienced the advantages of a metal insulated cooler (the old 70's and 80's versions are the best ever) this one has similar insulating qualities to the older style coolers.

I would recommend this cooler for hotter days --- it keeps ice better than any plastic on on the market.

    • Awesome Cooler!!!!!!!!!!
      By A2T3SS6KMXMRMC on 2007-10-17
This product will keep things cold very long and you wont even have to reice! I love this cooler

    • Great gift idea!
      By A2K8POJHIQLMGD on 2007-12-01
This cooler works well, tho maybe not as well as some of the more modern Colemans. Very capable tho, looks cool and has some heritage behind it. Makes you want to head out into the woods or the beach with your cooler and '62 Power Wagon.

    • Best cooler I've owned
      By A302QABDIHBBA5 on 2008-01-07
I seem to go through coolers at an astonishing rate. Now I have one that should last. First rate construction, a latch that actually secures the lid and it really keeps things cold! I'll update this if this cooler ever fails.

    • Retro, sturdy and nice
      By A3BL87H0549ADG on 2008-04-29
The Coleman 54 quart steel-sided cooler immediately takes you back to a different time. It is wonderfully built, with metal handles riveted to the body of the unit. The metal latch is a major plus, as this cooler will do most of its duty for me riding in the back of a side-by-side. While the price may initially scare some, compare this cooler with other all-plastic coolers of similar size. The difference isn't much compared with what you get.

    • Not quite old school
      By A31H3N8XZIEBMB on 2008-05-12
It's not quite as cool as the old steel version, but still has a nice retro vibe and does the job perfectly!

    • Coleman 54 Quart cooler
      By A3OPSDPF1UVTA1 on 2008-06-29
We packed our coleman with two bags of ice on the bottom of the ice chest and all of our food no drinks on top to drive to the high Sierra's. It was a 6 hour drive in 90 to 100 degree temp with the ice chest in the back of the truck in full sun until we got it to june lake then it was kept in a bear box that I shaded with a easy up to keep the sun off the bear box and we had about a 1/4 or a little better of our original ice 5 days later. we didn't have drinks in this cooler so we didn't open it but a few times a day. it out performed our other ice chest ( not coleman) with food in it that we didn't open but a few times a day by about 40 to 50 percent. My next trip I am going to use the coleman for drinks to see how it will do being opened several times a day. For a food ice chest its great, for drinks still to be determine.
