The Classic Cooler By A2ZR3YTMEEIIZ4 on 2006-11-08
I own this cooler, circa 1968. It is bombproof and looks like it survived a tour in Vietnam, but we haul this bad boy out each summer because it does the job. The cam lock on the lid keeps it from flying free if jarred or jostled; this is a very good thing if you take it fishing and have your catch inside. Construction is good enough to last near 40 years of use before considering a replacement. It really will survive that many seasons of use, which is more than you can say for many fragile thermoplastic knockoffs.
There are few camping or summertime essentials that can be universally adopted, but the Coleman steel cooler has to be one. Bring it on your next outing, and even if you have boring cans of Diet Coke inside, people will stop to check it out.

Plastic in a metal wrapper By A2EOLUB6QPRC6C on 2007-01-11
I had hoped to be buying the same cooler my family had when I was growing up -- nearly indestructible steel. This coleman is made to look like that cooler, but it is just a plastic ice chest with a thin sheet metal skin on the sides and top. I was disappointed, but it is still better than a standard plastic cooler. If you get it on sale (I paid $50) it's worth the money.

I got this for half price from Amazon. What a great deal. It's metal and keeps everything cooler longer. We love it.
GREAT BUY! By A308OHKN07830M on 2007-01-09
What a buy! Ice chest looks great. I'm sure it will hold up to many years of use. I purchased this as a Christmas present for my husband. He was very happy to receive it. We learned all too well after hurricane Katrina that ice just doesn't last in a regular ice chest. Hopefully we will be more prepared if ever in that situation again. We haven't tested it out yet, but people I know say that ice will last 3 days in this type ice chest!

I love this cooler, and not just because my wife got it for me for Christmas. I love her, BTW too.
Keeps everything cold and it is very sturdy (unlike most plastic coolers today).
- Just like the old one!!

My parents had the larger steel cooler for the last 25 years and it finally died. This one is exactly what they wanted!!
- Design hasn't changed in over 40 years - but that's a good reason!
     By A1M7ABFLYA4OQ3 on 2007-05-24
My family has passed these on for years, and the design of this cooler hasn't changed one bit. Solid construction, keeps things cool long, doesn't absorb heat from the sun, and is easy to drain. We've had all plastic ones in the past, but this can take a beating. There's a reason why this design hasn't changed in 40 years+, and that's a good thing! I still have our original one that my parents bought in 1969, and bought another a few months ago one for the vacation house. I don't trust the plastic ones as I've broken so many. The hinges, latches, and handles are all steel, and won't break. There's also a recessed bottle opener under the handle too! I wish other things were made this way. Ever say, "They don't make them like they used to?" Well that doesn't apply here - they still do make them like they used to!
- coleman ice chest (retro)
     By AXEKO9QQ8Z44W on 2006-11-29
Reminded of the good old times when I saw it for sale on Amazon. Brought back so many memories of times I had playing in the outdoors years ago and using this ice chest. It was a family friend's ice chest from years ago, but I remember the times we spent fishing and camping. I know that the ice chest survived at least 15 years of hard weekend warriorism! This is why I purchased this item. I hope that this ice chest lasts as long as our friend's did.
The first chest I bought arrived with a bent hinge from shipping. Amazon was emailed with the problem, and I received an email from them to keep the original item and a replacement was recieved in 3 days. So I bent the hinge back in place and the seal is off a bit, but I now the very proud owner of two of these babies. I went camping this past Thanksgiving Holiday and filled one of the ice chests to the rim with only ice. Six people using this ice for drinking ice only and after 4.5 days, and I emptied only about a gallon of water and about 1/4 of the ice that was left. One great purchase I feel I made.
Hinges are metal and it has a latch installed on the lid to assure it closes well and not comes open while in the back of a truck or a boat.
Oh and when I purchased this ice chest, it was on sale for less than 50 dollars and got free shipping.
- HAVE A PROBLEM
     By A3D9P0SM5HVRJ4 on 2007-06-08
I am sure that the cooler is all that it is cracked up to be. However, It was recieved with a problem. It seems that the lock is broken upon delivery. Other than that everything went fine.
- Solid cooler for a solid price
     By ATILSYQXWJLGQ on 2007-10-29
I purchased this cooler about 8 months ago and I am happy with the purchase. I have used it on many camping trips and it was easy to carry and kept all my delicious food cold. My only problem is that the old Coleman coolers were made of a nice metal. It made it feel really solid. This has a simple metal cover over the plastic. This takes away from the rustic feel.
