  • Arrr, Thar be fun times ahead Matey!

    By A1OLV54J65J168 on 2006-02-23
I bought this game on the fly cause the cover illustration looked so interesting that I couldn't resist. The instructions were a little confusing to understand at first, but once gameplay started it was picked up pretty easy and much fun was enjoyed by everyone. The game is geared for those ages 10 and up, but it was so easy to understand and so much fun, that my 8 year old neice was able to play without teaming up with an adult. The game promotes math skills which is a HUGE plus since many games today are only about fun. This game has it all, fun, education and the artwork on the cards is fantastic. When we played, we threw in chocolate gold pieces so we'd have real pirate plunder and everyone had to speak like a pirate. It's a really great way to spend quality time with your family and it's fun for all ages!

  • a lot of fun - ages 7 and up

    By A3D00O1XKR7A89 on 2006-09-29
Friends from out of town introduced us to this game, and the time passes so quickly with this game. The instuctions are a little laborious, but once you start playing everyone catches on. It's a strategy game at several levels. The cards have 1) pictures of merchant ships with differing levels of loot (gold pieces) 2) pirate ships at various 'power' levels and 3) pirate admirals (trump card, effectively.) As the game progresses players attempt to capture other players' merchies and maximize gold pieces while trying to prevent their own merchies from being captured.

Trust me, it's fun for the family. And of course, everyone can talk like a pirate.

  • Fun but not too good for just two people

    By A1YS1X3XF669XK on 2007-08-23
I bought this for my girlfriend knowing that it would just be mainly the two of us playing it. In my opinion, it is way to easy to 'cheat', or at least tip the play heavily in your advantage when there is just two people. The game is based on drawing cards and you can either draw or play. The problem is one person can basically just wait the other person out and keep drawing cards and rarely ever play until the deck is out. Then at the end, that player will still have cards after the other player has long run out, meaning that they just lay down merchant ships and collect them. We found ourselves just drawing the entire deck out so we modified the rules for two players and just dealt the entire deck to each other and then started to play. With more people, it is much more fun and I highly recommend it.

  • Fun game for the family

    By AZ020VHUUKXYK on 2006-12-28
I bought this game to play with my nephews. It's a fun game that utilizes strategy and a bit of luck. The instructions for the game are a bit confusing and the adults had to read them multiple times before beginning to play. After a few games, the concept clicked. My 9 year old nephew loves the game. It was too challenging for his 7 year old brother at first, but after a few games, he too was able to play.

  • Great Game for a Pirate Unit!

    By A25KKXUQQ0OLWB on 2007-10-26
Shiver me timbers! This is a fun game for all ages. I use it in teaching a pirate unit around the age of exploration. It is a lot of fun for everyone and students do get a better understanding of how pirates lived and the things they wanted. Just plain fun too.

  • LOTS of fun
    By A332NJOI8MPYDT on 2007-01-11
This is an awesome, quick thinking, problem solving game. We have played many times each week since we opened it. Pirate talk is great to add into play, also. ARGH!

  • Great game, but avoid this edition
    By ATQ9JBYX0F81N on 2008-01-06
Loot is a great pirate-themed game from one of the greatest modern game designers, Reiner Knizia. I highly recommend it, albeit with a warning.

The horrible cartoonish artwork on this Gamewright edition does not do the game justice, and in my opinion spoils the name of both the game and the designer. Seek out the original German edition from Amigo Spiele and go to boardgamegeek.com for the rules translation. The cards themselves need no translation, only the rules. Amigo Spiele's edition has beautiful illustrations on cards which are easier to hold. I highly recommend it.

Gamewright, you need to do a better job of importing games. Right now you're just ruining everything you touch.

  • LOOT IS A GREAT CATCH!
    By A1EUCQ0J7RY9FU on 2007-11-19
Along with all of the other Gamewright games I've purchased, I was not disappointed with this game either! This is rated for kids 10+ but I have played it with 6 and 7 year olds that have won the game. It is a great family game to play with a bunch of people, the more the merrier. We've taken it on camping trips and to friends houses, and now our friends are buying it. This is a blast!

  • Loot Hits the Jackpot
    By AWPAKXAU3EREX on 2008-01-02
Of course, the stars are based on how much fun your family has playing cards, and how "durable" cards are!

The game is seems a little complicated, matey, while you read the instructions but makes sense as the game progresses. For more than four players I would suggest a second deck. The game can be long for younger kids, so stick to the recommended age of 10 and up. We enjoyed it and talked pirate talk (argh!) while we played. Yes, we're silly but it was a lot more fun and interactive than vegging out in front of the tube!

Comes in a durable, heavy duty cardboard box, surprisingly. Nice packaging, and I would definitely purchase more products from this company.

  • A good group game
    By A2WZYLIWSNY2M8 on 2008-01-20
We found this game to be as fun as any normal card game when playing individually; however, when playing in pairs is when this game is at its best. After playing in pairs many times we still love it and it has still not become old. It is even better when you play it with people who have a competitve personality. The description uses the word "skullduggery" and that is a very accurate word about how to play this game.

  • Earlier Reviewer Mistaken About Rules
    By A121ABWCSZUINY on 2008-06-22
A previous reviewer of this game who claimed that there is a flaw in its rules was incorrect. That reviewer wrote: "The problem is one person can basically just wait the other person out and keep drawing cards and rarely ever play until the deck is out. Then at the end, that player will still have cards after the other player has long run out, meaning that they just lay down merchant ships and collect them." Actually, that would be impossible if the game's printed instructions are followed. They state that "The game ends when the draw pile has been depleted and one player has played his last card." In other words, as soon as the draw pile is gone and one player is out of cards, the game ends. And even more importantly, players at that point who are stuck with merchant-ship cards in their hands have to DEDUCT those cards' values from their score! Here is that part of the instructions: "Total all of the gold coins from the merchant ships you've won, then deduct the number of gold coins from the merchant ships still in your hand at the end of the game." Those rules make it pointless to try waiting out the other player by hoarding cards, because the hoarder risks getting stuck with them at the end of the game and paying a heavy penalty. (I wanted to point these things out because this really is a great game, and I don't want anyone to hesitate about buying it due to misinformation! Yo-ho-ho!)

  • Great kid game
    By A1THMC23EMR91T on 2007-12-11
My 5-year old boy is obsessed with this game. It was a bit complex for him at first, so I had to introduce the rules a few at a time (it is really for kids a bit older). Now he gets it. He has learned a lot of strategy and simple logic by playing. The pirate theme sparks his imagination. It's a fairly quick game and plays up to four easily, so his siblings can join in.

  • Loot.....What a great card game!
    By ABDQLYHDHYODM on 2007-12-20
I bought this game about 6 months ago. I have played it about 300 times since. This game is fun to play in groups of 2,3,4, or even 5 people. I play at work, at home, and with my in-laws. We all love the game. My in-laws even purchased the game after playing it. The goal of the game is to own the most merchant ships at the end of the game. Merchant ships are won as pirate ships and pirates compete for the ships. An average game lasts about 20-30 minutes. This game is a blast!

  • Loot is Great!
    By A2X9WNNA0II8DU on 2008-01-25
What a great game for the whole family. It says 10+ but my 5 year old can play a basic version of it. The nice thing is that you can keep playing it as you get older becuase the more you learn about strategy, the more fun the game is. We took it on vacation and it was the favorite activity with parents and grandparents.

  • Great game!
    By A1FZ43QM1Q6IJ0 on 2008-03-14
Bought this solely based on the great reviews it got. I was not disappointed. It has a bit of a learning curve, but once you catch on, it's a blast to play! Thanks Amazon.com reviewers!
