Cute Christmas Romance to end the Bah Humbug Feeling By AUPWA4AXC0M7X on 2005-11-21
I caught this movie on TV last year and thought it was very cute-- just like those romance novels I read. So, when it came out on DVD, I had to buy it.
She is the girl-next-door type who made a wish a long time ago for a boyfriend for Christmas and has pretty much given up on the wish ever coming true. He is a workaholic attorney whose path happens to cross hers--- and not in the best way. A little mistaken identity and holiday magic help the two fall in love. But, once the true identity is revealed, will all bets be off? You'll have to watch and see.
I would have given it 5 stars if I hadn't found myself thinking, "How did they get so much time off from work during the holidays?" (smile)
A delightful movie. Perfect for a chilly night when you need some help getting over your own bah humbug feelings.
Really Nice Movie But Terrible DVD Production By A22MQ2OAHY8SIJ on 2006-01-24
This is a really nice movie and anyone who likes a good romance will really enjoy it. The problem with this dvd is that the digital copyright protection prevents it from being played properly on computers or dvd/vcr combo machines. It works fine on machines that contain only a dvd player. I found this to be extremely frustrating and inconvenient. I wound up with 2 dvd's and they both behaved in the same way.
As a 12 year old, Holly Grant meets Santa and as she thinks she is too old for traditional gifts, she tells Santa she wants a boyfriend for Christmas. He leaves a gift under her tree with a message: she will receive her requested gift in the 20th year "when two hearts are ready". Time then goes to almost 20 years later when Holly is in her 30's and is working for a non-profit organization. Enter Ryan Hughes, a lawyer, who courtesy of Santa winds up being Holly's gift for Christmas. A mistake with a joint client causes Ryan to have a falling out with Holly even though they've never met. When Ryan arrives on Holly's doorstep, he chooses to tell Holly his name is Douglas Firwood to hide his true identity. Over the holiday Holly and "Doug" fall in love as they hold up a charade with her family. Holly's jealous ex-boyfriend tries to expose Ryan as a fraud, and Ryan's lie threatens to spoil his chance for a happy future with Holly. There is one brief comment about sex and a few uses of God's name, but otherwise I would say it is a great family movie.
Almost as good as it gets By ARCN3YPEY7HM5 on 2006-03-05
I work as a clerk in a library, and have customers who ask me for recommendations for good "chick flicks". I always recommend "Straight from the heart", with Teri Polo because it contains a sweet romance with a good story line and doesn't have to use scenes involving a sexual encounter to keep one's interest. This movie, "A boyfriend for Christmas" contains one scene where the young woman asks her potential boyfriend his sexual preferences (he answers with a light response, and the subject is closed), and another where she calls him late one night, and asks him what he is wearing (another light response), but other than that, it is a decent romance story that has a nifty little surprise at the end that I didn't even guess at. This movie is definitely a keeper!
Some of us women would appreciate more movies like the two above mentioned ones, that have a really great romance story without all the sex and profanity. Movie makers, listen up!!
Family entertainment at its best By A3OC8ZG1S3OAVA on 2006-09-17
If you are looking for a cute fun family movie for the holidays, with morale integrity built-in, here's your movie.
Warm Hearted Love Story By A3FY3H6F4249E0 on 2006-11-10
This was such a cute story. When I saw it on TV, I had to have it. As a young girl, Holly Grant asks Santa for a boyfriend. Now, 20 years later and with a failed romance in her past, Holly is wondering why Santa never gave her that perfect guy he promised. When Holly meets the same Santa again, she asks him. Santa sends "Doug Firwood" over to be her "boyfriend for Christmas" and the movie takes off.
Charles Durning is fantastic as Santa. Holly Grant and Doug Firwood make such a cute couple. It's a great "feel good" light-hearted romance and Christmas story and worth watching over and over again. If I tell you any more, I would have to tell the story.
Yes. This IS a chick-flick, sooooo, if you are an insensitive, belching, beer-breath, and otherwise gassy guy, don't bother. You won't like this movie!

I am a romantic...so this was a great movie for me....
- The worst movie ever?
     By A33AFRVRA02BAK on 2006-12-19
This could be the worst film I've seen in my entire life. It is plotted dreadfully, at best requiring constant suspense of disbelief and at worst just not making sense. It is impossible to like the smug, two-dimensional characters: in particular, Patrick Muldoon's performance as Ryan just comes across as creepy. The dialogue is stilted and cliched and it is acted without a trace of subtlety. This film was so bad, it was almost impossible to stop watching it through a kind of morbid fascination.
- Never lose hope for finding true love.
     By A3C20GVPMIYVKU on 2007-01-18
I watched this movie several times on a local channel during the Christmas season and fell in love with it. Yes, it can be described as a chick flick and since there are many of us who enjoy these types of films, I recommend this one. The acting is very natural and the family get togethers are lively and entertaining. The love story is interesting to watch as it builds. There are many humorous lines as well as serious ones to catch your attention. Wouldn't it be great if they made a sequel to this one.
- Amusing, lighthearted, fun
     By A3TYNCO9B1KA8M on 2007-01-03
We all need fun, lighthearted movies and we need more of them. Holiday movies are one of my favorite genres and this added nicely to my collection. You will enjoy the characters building to an although predictable ending, still heartwarming. If you look forward to the holidays as I do for the chance to get out all of those wonderful holiday movies and watch them again, this is definitely one to add to your collection.

- Christmas Romance!
     By A3AM1VNSPSYASP on 2007-10-20
I've been waiting for this DVD since 2004, when I first saw it on TV.
The story begins with a teenage girl who comforts a little girl who is afraid to tell Santa what she wants. The little girl has a brother who sees the girl help his sister. Santa tells her to make a wish because she helped someone else. She receives a mysterious snowglobe on Christmas Day.
Move forward several years...The teenage girl now offers assistance to poor women. The teenage boy is now an attorney with a high profile firm and he is the public defender for one of those women. Needless to say, Santa wants the two of them together.
A very tasteful and romantic movie.

This was a cute romantic movie about a woman who wished as a pre-teen to have a boyfriend for Christmas. Twenty years later she's a little jaded and has given up hope. But will things turn around for her this Christmas? This reminded me a tiny bit of the Doris Day & Rock Hudson "Mistaken Identity" theme. The one thing about this movie that stood out to me was that half the time they showed the skyline for downtown L.A. yet there was snow on the ground. The other half of the time it was a totally different skyline. Wasn't that big a deal, but it was kinda funny. This movie was sweet and easy and the whole family can watch it. Charles Durning played a good Santa. A nice movie to get you into the Christmas mood.

     By A39AIMJR5402LG on 2007-01-18
On my daughter's Christmas list she had put "A boyfriend." When she unwrapped this gift a big smile spread across her face. It's perhaps even better than the real thing. A fun movie you can watch many times and still enjoy. Great for the family.
- Great Romance
     By A2FHJC8XZEJ66A on 2007-02-07
I love to watch this movie at Christmas time, especially because I am a sappy single and believe that miracles do happen. Yes, I do believe the spirit of St. Nick is alive and well and maybe not with Santa's help, but a little divine help I will find my perfect guy too.
- Very enjoyable christmas movie

This has been the hardest movie to view. I first saw it on TV. I like the movie, so I ordered it through Amazon. The first copy I received would not play and got a message to say it will not play, please eject. So I did not get an opportunity to view the DVD.
- A Boyfriend for Christmas
     By A3NLCSN4S099CG on 2007-12-12
If you can get past the insipid title and brief moments of juvenile pugnacity on the part of the "boyfriends," you can really enjoy the development of this story and, ultimately, the message that it conveys. The story begins with a young girl's lost Christmas wish that is answered many years later. With a hint of magic and rich dose of Christmas spirit, the story is one that you will enjoy watching year after year. In fact, it actually improves with viewing.
- Family Fare that Falls Flat
     By AV84DDOQWBFL7 on 2007-12-12
I love Christmas movies and I love romantic films. Put the two together and you have a no brainer winner. Then why don't I like this movie more? The actors are competent, they're attractive, and the story, up to a point is kind of cute. But there's just no heart in it. When this film digresses into the "Battle of the Beaus"...it's just too much...to over the top...subtlety out the window. (SPOILER ALERT) Like at the end when the couple each realize that they met as kids...that scene could have been handled so beautifully and with such sweet drama. Instead the director just let's it blurt out...very anti-climactic. Maybe that's the reason I don't like this film more...not enough subtlety...all the way around.
