  • Great Portable Speakers that pack easy

    By A3BY5KCNQZXV5U on 2006-10-10
I have owned many portable speakers...none have the sound quality that these have given their size. They actually fit perfectly in the top pocket of most rollaboard luggage...solid flat case. The reason they sound so good is that they use a planar speaker design much like Magneplanar high end audiophile speakers or Monsoon computer speakers. Low mass means fast accurate sound reproduction with little energy. One price though is the unrealistic bass many like to hear is not there but the bass that is natural is and it's reproduction is very accurate...better than speakers 10 times the size because of planar design.

I own a pair of Magnaplanars and a 2 sets of Monsoons and always wanted something I could carry the size and shape of book. This is it.

Battery time is unbelieveable. I have yet to run them down on even a 3 day trip. I purchased rechargeable batteries from SAMs that are enegizers...wish I had bought the lithiums...20bucks and you have a charger and batteries that will run these about 200 hours!

What is wrong...the cord, I almost lowered it a star for this reason alone. It stows nicely but it is much to short. The stow design would have supported another 1 or 2 foot of cord which it dearly needs. I like to use these with my laptop but using the keyboard with them connected is really difficult. You need to buy an extension cord to keep your frustrations down.

Another greater feature is the blue led on-off led on the top. Bright enough to know it is on but not a bother in the dark. The automatic turnoff feature in the absence of sound for a few minutes is also nice.

Volume is loud for a speaker this size and I seldom turn it up all the way. I use these in hotel rooms and they are loud enough that I do not turn them up all the way lest I bother my neighbors. They will distort when turned up when high bass is present and they are overloaded. This is usually a problem with the batteries...current supply. Use rechargeables, particularly lithium, and you will get more out of them since the current available is higher. Same goes for any electronics.

I paid $80 for mine and here at Amazon I now see them for almost half that price....may buy another pair for spares!

  • Not bad at all

    By A680RUE1FDO8B on 2007-03-14
The only criticism I have of these speakers is one that many other reviewers have noted: the bass is weak. The depth of the bass will change a bit, depending on the surface you put the speakers on. A real wood table generates a richer - but far from superb - bass than a laminate covered kitchen counter. Treble frequencies are acceptable as long as you dont' drive the speakers too hard.

The design lends itself to portability. The speaker base becomes a cover for travel. No other case is required. The short audio cable stows very neatly into the back of the unit. The on-off switch can be toggled accidentally, something travelers should remember. Of course, the unit uses commonly available AA cells. Battery life appears to be excellent. The AC adapter is separate, but considering the long battery life and cheap batteries needed, it's questionable that anyone would want to travel with the adapter.

Overall, pretty good value for the money if you can live without rich bass. Oh yeah, as a bonus, the speakers really have a neat vibration when they're powered up. Good for a momentary thrill of some kind.

  • Logitech powered speaker

    By A1V6BRL3HW7G9W on 2006-06-26
The speakers sound very good even at high volumes. This is a very good addition to mp3 players. I use it connected to my pocket pc to listen to internet radio stations and podcasts.

There is a significant "wow" factor with the design.

One caution however, there is no volume control on the speaker. The volume must be controlled at the source which can be inconvenient at times.

  • Clear, crisp, portable speakers

    By A3Q4TYJVAM4IRM on 2007-08-26
I have been buying Logitech speakers since their very first entry into the computer speaker market in the 1990s (with a very solid but uninspired product). Since then their product lineup has continually improved; this model true to Logitech tradition, fills a niche market and does it very well.

Sound reproduction is excellent, volume and clarity were very reasonable with my iPod. They sound a lot better than most laptops' integrated speakers, similarly better than most clock-radio CD players. I plan to use them for music when staying in hotels. They should have no problem filling the space of your average hotel room.

As others have commented, the bass is a little weak, but they are flat portable speakers after all; there's a reason subwoofers are box-shaped. They are less than 1" thick.

I bought these mostly for travel, but I could see using them in workplace or cubicle, or when you need to take your speakers with you when you finish using a shared area. Take them to your next LAN party!

International travelers will be pleased to note the dual-voltage power converter (you can run off batteries too of course).

    Recommended.

  • works great, with small limitations

    By AKLBA0VIWBDLG on 2007-02-03
I travel a lot, and this has been a great find. The sound quality is not as good as bulky speakers, but much better than the little computer speakers. I can crank it as loud as I want for a hotel room and it sounds great.

One trick I found, in Musicmatch on the equalizer screen there is a limiter. I slide that down to about -4 and it keeps the sound from distorting.

  • Sound great, but beware of the auto shut-off feature ..
    By A1PZGB80IFLD7Z on 2007-10-08
I got these to upgrade my laptop speakers while in its docking station. The good news is they sound great. The bad news is they were designed with an auto power-down feature to prolong battery life. Even though mine are plugged into the AC power adapter 100% of the time, they shut down without a music signal running thru them. I sometimes play classical music in the office and even have had them shut down in quiet passages of some pieces, or even between songs. This is not documented anywhere in Logitech's instructions or packaging, but can be verified thru their tech support.

They are probably perfect for their intended use as a battery powered portable speaker system, but under AC power with a permenent install, they have been a disappointment.

  • Worked for Seven Minutes, Then Quit
    By A2U3AJTY0LJ7W9 on 2006-10-14
When I plugged these in they worked fine for about seven minutes, then the speaker's internal power simply cut off. Happened on the AC adapter or batteries, whether I was using my computer or my iPod as the sound source. Same behavior every time.

Logitech sent me a replacement from a new production run, same thing happened. Sent it back to Logitech on my nickel, got another replacement from same production run (Product ID: A612). Same problem.

After two months and many long waits for Logitech tech support, I'm giving up. Maybe it was just a bad run, or maybe my environment is flukey, but I'm sorry I ever bought this thing.

  • Annoying Auto-Shut Off Feature
    By A1QD79KX3BCJ59 on 2007-09-02
The sound quality of the speakers is decent considering the portable size, but I must say I have one major complaint that I think anyone purchasing this product should realize: it has an annoying auto-shut off feature that does not allow one to listen to the speakers at a low volume. If you want to use these speakers to listen to music quietly while you study or work, look elsewhere. I am trying to listen to music at a low (but clearly audible) level, and the speakers keep turning off. The problem is the speakers think I'm not playing anything, so they power off. And if I turn my iPod up any more to keep it from happening, the music is too loud to concentrate.

Please be aware that the volume threshold for the auto-shut off feature is way too high!

  • Simply Awesome
    By A8UB0U70KZ4P9 on 2006-06-30
The sound is loud and great. It's only flaw is that the audio cord is too short.

  • Portable easy to use with satisfactory sound
    By A3BE2YOJBENXFD on 2006-07-21
I reviewed a number of external speakers for multi purpose use. Small enought to pack, but good enough sound for a room of people..... I bought these and found they met the criteria very well, use them with a portable DVD player to review video tapes when on the road and need a quick review of the days tapings. Also can use them with my laptop for better sound if presenting something. I like the lid that covers them or acts as a stand and ease of plugging in to the headphone jack. So far the battery life has been sufficient for my needs.

Being an audiophile might like a better sound, but for their size they do very well and are not particularly tinny like some small speakers, have a fairly rich sound for their size, but not a lot of power.

  • Great speakers at a Great Price
    By A31OEMXRFAGJ1W on 2007-01-03
These speakers are an absolute value. They have very good sound at a nice price. They are also very durable and packable speakers. They fit easily into just about any bookbag and many larger purses. I bought these to pair with my wifes' Dell DJ and they work great. Don't listen to others who say that they are not loud enough, because I have had mine in a room with about 30 other people in there and you could hear everything just fine.

  • Excellent
    By A3G1NJBP6BE7OS on 2007-01-24
I find these speakers to be excellent. I am using them with a MobiBlu mp3 player. Many people using Mobiblue complain that the volume could be louder, and I admit that the volume level to my headphones is sometimes lacking, but not with the mm28 speakers. Plenty loud. Excellent portability on this speaker. You can pack it with your stuff and not worry about breaking it due to the plastic cover that folds down over the speaker and doubles as the support stand. Overall I am very pleased with this speaker.

  • Excellent buy!
    By A3GRVBO1TC2M9G on 2007-01-25
I was amazed at the quality of the sound that comes out of this speaker. I would highly recommend!

  • Disappointed
    By A14G3AZAND93VM on 2007-01-25
I should have paid attention to reviews that mentioned the "short cord." I know this is an inexpensive speaker system but couldn't they put more than 12 inches on the cord between the speakers and my laptop?
The sound was okay but after I unplugged it from my laptop, I had to shutdown and reboot. Not convenient.
The good thing about the experience is that I could return it easily to [...].

  • Auto shut off
    By AV1G255M8OJZQ on 2007-10-12
Pros: cheap, nice design, light weight.

Cons: shuts off either when volume is too low, or when the music is too silent.

I do not see why Logitech should decide at what volumes I am to listen to my music. I like listening to music at low volumes when I'm doing my homeworks, but it only gets irritating when having to switch the speaker back on every 5-10 minutes or so.

Logitech should not have had this auto shut off feature, or at least informed about it.

I would not recommend this to anyone, unless you are looking for a portable speaker to bring to the beach or something, listen to loud music, and then throw away afterwards. For other, more varied purposes I find this speaker to be worthless.

  • combine with mp3 player
    By A2DS15ZLI6304O on 2007-07-07
For a portable sound system to fill up a bedroom-sized space, combine these logitech speakers with an mp3 player. I used mine with a tiny $59 sansa mp3 player and the results are awesome. Runs on batteries or can be plugged into the a/c. Packaging is clever and sturdy. Subtle blue LED indicator comes on when it is turned on, which is good feedback without being irritating in the dark. For $21, much better than most other speaker systems I own!

  • Laptop Speakers.
    By A3J3JE3NHFG53J on 2007-07-09
I've given it 4 stars because it produced pretty good sound when connected to my laptop. The highs and midrange were very good but lacks a bit on the base side. Sounds distorts when set at full volume. At 3/4 volume it works great. I did a number of presentations with my Sony Vaio and these speakers in a large conference room that worked very well. The audience was quite impressed by the sound coming out of this small, thin and very portable speakers. The input wire is too short, I bought an extension from Radio Shack that works very well. The batteries last quite a long time which is another advantage.

  • Impressed
    By AEHFZX25O0IEY on 2007-10-23
Very impressed with the volume and sound quality. For less than $20 delivered, these seem very good. I purchased to listen to my iPod in the car. My car is old and it is loud inside. Sometimes I can't even hear the car stereo over the road noise. I can hear these. The auto shut off has happened to me when I listen at lower volumes, but it's really no big deal.

  • Turns off; Used to be $15-25
    By A12099703639TY on 2008-02-10
I bought this in 2006 when it was perhaps $45, and I saw it selling for $15 in early 2007. Now it's $99, which is far too much.

Considering it's compact form it does have quite decent bass. I enjoyed this speaker, but when I needed to purchase another portable speaker I chose the AudioSource DB5 portable because:

    1. The Audiosource was cheaper (currently $25).
    2. Audiosource does NOT turn off automatically after 5 minutes like the Logitech does, so I don't miss Skype calls.
    3. Audiosource is powered from the computer via USB, or via AA batteries (Logitech powers from an OUTLET or AA batteries). That's one less outlet to bother with, which is especially nice when overseas or just moving around a lot.
    4. Audiosource has volume control buttons wich Logitech lacks.

The Audiosource's bass and maximum (distortionless) volume aren't as strong as the Logitech's (even after I amplify the bass), however the Audiorouce's sound is crisper at lower volumes.

The Audiosource is about 3/5 the size of the Logitech, but a bit thicker, and might be a tad heavier.

  • Good personal speakers
    By AQMGQ7LCN62L1 on 2006-07-29
I just bought these speakers based a review I saw on another website. They sound great when you're listening to soft music or hard music at a lower level, but the bass is extremely distorted at higher levels (which is a problem for me as I'm a HUGE Red Hot Chili Peppers fan). Also, they don't get extremely loud, but thats ok for me as I don't plan on using these in loud places anyway. I love the size and look of it.

For the price, these things sound pretty damn good. Despite the problems I listed, I'm happy with my purchase. As always you get what you pay for.

  • Great Portable Speakers
    By ABF90206JHRTN on 2007-07-13
As portable Speakers, these are fantastic. Its a speaker you can just through into a bag or in the car. Long battery life, compact design, speaker is protected when closed up. The sound is very acceptable as a portable speaker. Sound isnt great at high volumes, and it lacks a volume control. So if you are hooking up a Home Theater system, these probibly arnt for you, but if you want something to take out and about, these are the go.

Ive had these speakers running off batteries for over 40 hours now and they are still going strong.

  • Excellent mobile speaker system
    By A1H1EEOAKPQPI4 on 2007-07-17
Very pleased with the design, look and function of this set... does what it is supposed to, easy to carry/transport and delivers decent sound for my MP3 player. At $30, I consider this a steal when compared to competing products.

  • Nice sound
    By A2S450ZEUXVLQK on 2007-09-18
This little thing can fill a room. For portable speakers these do a wonderful job. You won't get any or much bass but you can't go wrong with these. I would buy again.

  • great product
    By A3CD6M7ZQ9T9G2 on 2007-09-26
Good sound and long battery life, plus you can also plug it in. Shuts off after no music feed, nice for listening as you fall asleep with some other music source that also shuts off. Short cord is convienent and minimizes clutter, if you need it longer, can buy an extension.

  • Okay for the price
    By A2VL7RPMJSRL2I on 2007-11-07
They're cute and pack up nice and flat. That's the best aspect of this portable speaker. On the negative side, as others have said, the bass is weak - listening to old 80s New Wave on these speakers is quite a disappointment. :-) Also, the audio connector cable is quite short, you'll need an extension cord if you're using your laptop while listening to music, or the speakers will be stuck off to one side, and that's another thing to pack!

  • Great value - very good sound, portable, and low cost
    By A2M1VDSS5E7LV on 2007-04-23
These speakers are a great value for the price. The sound is better than speakers I've heard that cost three or four times as much. I bought this speaker on a colleague's recommendation and now I'm ordering one for my niece. She saw and heard this speaker and wanted it for herself.

Sounds great with Zune, iPod, and the two laptops I've tried it on. Booming sound for such small, portable unit. It's nice how the protective cover folds under to make a stand, too.

As some have mentioned, the cord is short for use with a laptop, especially if the jack on the computer is in the front. On the other hand it's nice that the cord stows easily in the unit.

BTW, the guy who said he had to reboot his computer after disconnecting them had other problems unrelated to this speaker; there's no way this speaker or anything you hook up to the headphone jack could cause that.

  • Can not beat them for the price
    By A1CBLDTBIL4G5K on 2007-05-17
While I was surfing the net I cam across these speakers thinking how good can they be since they were so inexpensive. I think for the price they are fantastic. It is all one piece, has a cover over the speaker when not in use and can be used as a stand when in use and indoors get pretty loud without a great deal of distortion. Outside with all the open space and noise they do not fare as well. If you want a great pair of speakers for your Mp3 player so that you can listen with a friend, or times when you need use of your ears, these are them.Logitech® mm28 Portable Speakers

  • Logitech speakers very cool
    By AOCDN6T1TDXDC on 2007-08-01
Looks nice enough to leave out on my desk. Great portability and protection. Sound quality is very good, but then I don't crank them or expect much low range. But why is the cord so short? I realize there was a consideration for the cord storage, but even an extra 6" would have been great. The speakers literally have to be rubbing up against whatever you connect them to. I like to keep my iPod close to me on the desk so I can skip through songs, adjust volume, etc. but I don't want the speakers right next to me. I bought a cheap cord extension and that has solved the problem. Otherwise, I'm very pleased.

  • GREAT buy!
    By A21DTU1RS2Y22Q on 2007-08-06
First the cons, which are few. The cord that connects the speaker to whatever input you're using is very short. I bought it to use as a portable speaker for my Zune, so that really doesn't effect me.

The sound it puts out is actually very good. My Logitech X-230 2.1 desktop speakers with a dedicated sub sound better of course, but the 28mm produces decent bass, clear percussions, and it's plenty loud. I like the overall package, with the clear flip-down protective face that also serves as a stand when the speakers are in use, it's definitely easy to pack around, and operates off a wall jack or batteries. All in all it was a great buy for me at 20 bucks. Considering it was originally $80, there was just no question.

I can see them being very useful for a traveling laptop user, but they go perfectly with a Zune or other MP3 player. With this thing I can listen to my Zune in the shower, provide musical entertainment at the beach, or anywhere else! Great portable speaker for the price.
