  • They get the job done

    By A35O9IF2OF80WO on 2006-05-24
I bought the PX 100 after reading online reviews in which they were very highly rated. I've had them now for a few days--I'm listening to a Haydn symphony through my computer CD drive as I type this--and my first impression is that they're okay. Just don't expect miracles, as you might after reading some of the glowing reviews.

On the plus side, they're very comfortable. I wear them when I'm recording myself, and I hardly notice them as I'm playing. The sound is reasonably detailed and open, with a solid bass. Another plus is that, although the semi-open design does allow sound to leak outside the headphones, it's not all that noticeable unless you're blasting at high volume. On the minus side, the carrying case would make a good substitute for a Rubik's Cube. (Instructions for using it are below.) Another caveat: The PX 100 doesn't seem as though it would stand up to hard use. The ear pads are foam rubber, and other than the metal head band, the rest is plastic. For me, this isn't a problem, as I've no intention of using it for travel. But reading Sennheiser's description of the headphones as "robust," one might assume you could hammer nails with it. Apparently Sennheiser and I have different views on the word "robust."

In sum, good sound (not great--for that, you'll need to pay more than $50), comfortable to wear, but don't accidentally sit on them.

    -------------------------------------------

Over time, I've mastered the arcane skill of fitting the PX 100 into its plastic carrying case. For those still baffled by this, below is a procedure for how it's done. But before doing this, notice these features on the headphones:

The left end of the headband is labeled "1"--the right end of the headband is labeled "2."

Each headband end has a notch.

At the point where the headphone wire splits into two wires, there's a little grey sliding tab.

Okay, take a deep breath and remind yourself that you're an intelligent and accomplished adult who's mastered other difficult skills. You can do this. So let's get started:

    1. Hold the headphones so that the "1" and "2" on the ends of the headphone band are facing you.

    2. Fully retract the metal band on both sides.

    3. Gently turn the earpads so they click into place with the foam side facing away from you.

    4. Gently fold the headband end labeled "1" so that the earpad is almost touching the padded section of the headband.

    5. Gently fold the headband end labeled "2" and line its notch up with the notch on headband end 1.

    6. Gently push the notches together. You may have to hold the headband ends together with thumb and finger.

    7. Now slide the little grey tab on the headphone wires until it's snug against the earpads.

    8. With the folded headphones in one hand, pick up the carrying case with the other hand. The clear plastic side should be facing you.

    9. With the numbered ends of the headband facing you, slide the headphones (band side first) into the carrying case. Gently push it into place so that the headband is snug against the inside of the clear plastic housing.

    10. Wrap the cord around the grooved part of the carrying case. (Be sure you don't wind the cord outside the protruding tab.) When you reach the end of the wire, loop it around itself a few times and push the pin end inside next to the earpads.

    11. Snap the carrying case shut.

    12. Stand back and admire your work. If others are present, encourage them to applaud.

  • The PX100W, the iPod matching best Open Portable set of headphones in its class

    By A1YF0SKMGV2BIL on 2007-03-09
The following review was written for the PX-100 but the only difference between these two great sets of cans is the colour, most likely to match iPods and such devices.

I started a journey about a year ago into the world of the audiophile, the lover of good sound. One of the first set of cans (audiophile speak for headphones) I purchased was the PX-100. I also received the Koss PortaPro at the same time and the PX-200 a few days later. The audiophile reviews in particular seemed to favor the PortaPro "slightly" and at first, I agreed with these reviews. As time has gone on, I have come to believe that the Sennheiser PX-100 outshines the comparable Koss PortaPro with better, more open and natural sound that isn't bass heavy and reproduces mids, highs and lows all equally and vividly! (I still am very fond of my PortaPros but I consider them to be a 4.5 star model vs. the Sennheiser PX-100, which I consider to be a true 5 star model.)

I've been so incredibly impressed by the Sennheiser PX-100 (and its closed, more bass reflexive relative, the PX-200) that I haven't even bothered to try the new iGrado portable made by my favorite headphone company, Grado Labs. So in terms of an Open Portable set of cans, the PX-100 are the very best set in my opinion. By comparison, the Koss PortaPro, has a somewhat "muffled" sound, requiring a little more power and not sounding quite as rich or dynamic, in my opinion. The PX series has a very low sound impedance of only 32 Ohms, which means that small low-power output devices such as CD/MP3 players and iPods can drive these cans without having to turn the volume way up and sucking your batteries dry quickly.

I have found the Sennheiser cans to be comfortable with durable pads on the headpiece and soft ear cushions, all of which are replaceable. So you are making an investment that will last! Being comfortable, you can also fall asleep in them; I have! They are also very sturdy and can be taken for walks, jogs, trips to the gym and so on. The PX-100's are Open cans so they will leak sound if you turn the volume up too high, possibly disturbing others around you. (If you want a portable set that both keeps your sound in and other people's sounds out, the PX-200 is the way to go.) The PX-100 sounds equally GREAT whether you are listening to an audiobook, classical music, rock, metal, contemporary, country or even a DVD or video game! Having said that, I believe you will be blown away by how much these little cans "can" do with whatever you throw at them! I listened to Samuel Barber's Adagio for String's (a very difficult piece that tests any headphone's abilities to handle all ranges!) and these cans handled every last detail beautifully. Martina McBride, Third Day, Metallica, Mozart and many others as well sounded absolutely amazing!

A lot of to do has been made about the difficulty of folding them up and storing them in their (very rugged and sturdy) plastic case. I have a nerve damaged left hand and I was able to fold them up and stow them the first time I used them in less than thirty seconds. In my opinion, it's a piece of cake! (And the directions are on the headphones as well as the case and packaging.)

Now the "but" or "qualified statement" list: These ARE audiophile level cans, which sound great right out of the box but there is there really is a break-in period for the absolute best results after about 12-20 hours. (I know; I didn't believe it at first either but I could hear the difference with every hour of use.) I believe that should you choose to purchase these Sennheisers, you are going to get a pair of absolutely amazing and out-of-this-world cans that will last for years to come!!

My final qualification is a warning: BEWARE blasting your hearing to pieces! These portable cans are able to produce amazingly accurate and beautiful sound but they are also able to produce amazingly LOUD (and yet still accurate!) amounts of sound.

In conclusion, I believe that the Sennheiser PX-100 is a fantastic portable open set of cans worth every penny you pay for them. They come with a full two year warranty from a company who stands behind their product. I am extremely pleased with all of my Sennheiser headphones and I believe that if you are looking for a Portable set of open headphones, the PX-100's are awesome and the choice to go with, and you have your choice of a black and silver model or the white model, depending upon your taste. Enjoy because it is all about the sound!

  • Best Portable Headphones This Price Range

    By A212MDP6K4VJS5 on 2006-09-09
You just dropped some cash on a new iPod (or any other portable music device/laptop) and all they give you are those little ear buds. Ear buds have their place (for being discreet, when wearing a hat, etc) but when you want to listen to the fine details in your music you have to step up to a better headset. I looked all over the web, read many reviews and by far, at this price, the PX 100 has the most stellar reviews. That includes comparisons to its more expensive siblings, the PX 200 and PX 250.

What most seperates the PX 100 from all the others in this price range is great BASS. It does a good job of delivering solid bass. Trebles are crisp too. They are so light weight, you won't even feel them after 5 minutes. Being open ear designed, you can still hear what is going on around you. If you choose not to, you can always bump up the volume.

I would say sound range-wise they compare to the Koss headsets you find at Barnes and Noble, but much more lightweight and comfortable. You won't be disappointed, especially when compared to those little earbuds.

And yes, for those of you who wondered, I was listening to them while writing this.

  • Your ears will thank you!

As the author of the Jefferson Airplane book "Take Me To A Circus Tent" and a former radio disc-jockey, I am often asked to write and or discuss various audio products and recordings from the 60's and 70's.

    Sennheiser PX 100W Mini Headphones

As far back as my first announcing job, I selected Sennheiser for a myriad of reasons.

There used to be a term called "Listener Fatigue" with standard closed (heavy) headphones because it is very unnatural for the ear to support weight for a period of time. Not only with many inferior headphones would the inner ear hurt from the music but also the weight would cause additional discomfort on the outer portion.

Sennheiser designs headphones to offer freedom of "Listener Fatigue" and for the consumer to encompass the entire musical spectrum.

If your forte is rock, jazz, or folk the headphones will create a natural rich environment for the ears to cherish.

Sennheiser has always priced their products to be consumer friendly. It is not uncommon for a competitor to charge as much as double for a lesser quality headphone.

Enjoy the music and be well,

  • These are great Headphones

    By A1DGZ6PJQ6J6WB on 2005-11-26
I use my iPod almost every day and the little ear buds that it came with were really starting to get annoying. In searching for a new pair of headphones, I was looking for several things: good sound, easily portable, durable, and not too expensive. These Sennheiser PX 100W's fit all four. They sound absolutely fantasitc, they fold up to easily fit in my gym bag, no worries about them breaking while in said gym bag, and they were just about forty bucks. Another great thing about them is that they stay put. With the ear buds, I was constantly fiddling with them to keep them in place. Not so with these headphones, just pop them on your head and you're good to go. I couldn't ask for anything more! Oh and aesthetically, I like that they are white, just like my iPod. :o)

  • Superior performance from an over-the-ear headphone
    By A8P2LP0A0UA on 2006-07-26
This is the best over-the-ear headphone that I have listened to, and inexpensive to boot. I gave it my personal acid test with Bach's Toccata and Fugue in 9 Minor, and it passed with flying colors, rendering both deep bass and very high frequencies accurately and without noticeable distortion even when playing very loudly.

While some have complained about the case and the complexity of folding the phones into the case, I have no problem with it. The phones fold easily (there's even a diagram on the case, and numbers on the earpieces so that you get them folded in the right order), and the case protects them from the rest of the junk in your briefcase.

The phones are very comfortable and can be worn for hours at a time with no problem -- excellent for long airline flights.

Altogether, I found this to be an elegant product with excellent performance, at a very reasonable price.

  • Great but not the greatest
    By A1B0P8TGHA9E5C on 2006-02-15
So I was finally fed up with the default ear buds on my iPod and shopping around I came to the conclusion that these were the best for the under 100 price range. Since I did buy these as replacements to the ear buds that's how I'm going to review them on the basis of the ear buds (Except the numerical ratings).

    SOUND QUALITY: 8/10
A hell of a lot better than the ear buds. The music seems like it surrounds you, giving a stereo like experience. Unlike the earbuds when you turn up the volume you don't loose quality everything still sounds clear. It also seems like you can make out notes better with these than the ear buds. One thing that is bad is that the sound "leaks" since they're semi-open, if you're in a quiet place and have the volume turned up above 25% chances are people will notice. That's probably my biggest gripe about them

    BASS: 8/10
Great bass response. The first thing I did when I got these was test out the bass and I have to seem I am very pleased. You get that rumbling type noise on hip hop songs and can hear specific bass notes like never before on the original ear buds. The bass also doesn't blow out if you turn it up, the first day I had my iPod I blew out the bass. The only way I can really describe it is bliss, I simply love it.

    COMFORT: 9/10
They're the over the head variety and actually fit very well. Unlike the ear buds they don't keep falling out, you won't have to worry> One of the main reasons I bought new some new headphones. They have some cushions on the inside of the top band that make a small difference but what's good about them is the ear muff parts don't really cause a bother. What does however is if you listen to them for an extended period of time, oh let's say about an hour or more your ears might start feeling a little warm. Still, the best over the head's I've ever had.

    DURABILITY: 7/10
Not much here since I've only had them for a short while but they do seem like they could break. Since they do fold it almost feels as if you could accidently break one of the parts, I've had no troubles so far but you never know.

    PORTABILITY: 7/10
Of course they aren't going to be as convient as those small little ear buds but they're still pretty good in terms of portability. They fold to which makes them able to fit in your pocket but if you stick them and your iPod in one pocket it'll feel a bit cramped. The case it comes with seems like a nice idea but it's not that great, it takes some time to get the headphones inside. It's not an instant type of thing.

CONCLUSION: Great headphones for 60 bucks to replace those bothersome ear buds. Nice audio quality and bass plus portability make these one of the best 60 dollar replacements for the ear buds (If you want better quality, if not I'd suggest something a little cheaper).

  • Perfect for the portable player
    By A2UWPPU5GZLMQZ on 2007-07-03
Sennheiser has made a headphone set that is as near to perfect for portable players as I can imagine. The build quality is good. The phones are light but seem sturdy enough. They fold neatly for travel, though there is a trick to getting them in their case. I can wear them comfortably for hours. The sound quality is very good. If it were any better the lack of full dynamic range that compressing audio causes would detract from my iPod listening.

I've tried listening to compressed files mp3 and AAC with studio grade headphones and honestly don't like it. Too much accuracy shows up the compression encoding limits and the music sounds less than stellar. The PX100 strikes a terrific balance between very good sound, and good enough accuracy. They're ever so slightly too bassy for acoustic jazz and classical, however, not annoyingly so, but rock and country fall right in the sweet spot.

  • A Great Headset!
    By A32BLE5KPEVPRG on 2007-06-27
These are excellent headphones. Clear, crisp sound with decent bass (as to be expected with open style sets). A must for flights, these compact headphones are easily fold-able. A good deal!

  • Great sound quality
    By A261ZUCDTF0P34 on 2006-07-27
These headphones are great and have great sound quality, although it took a few times to get them refolded in the case right.

  • gr8 headphones!
    By A1BJ2Q6JS94DKA on 2007-04-11
I'm no expert on sound equipment, but I do know a what I like. The headphones come in a nice carrier that you can put your folded up headphones into, and carry around. Very convenient. I hear things on this headphone that I've never heard before. Very clear and crisp sound, with no noticeable distortion. I only wish I could have bought a black pair instead of white. Very highly recommended.

  • Wonderful, Wonderful
    By A24BIN8W2RM9Y3 on 2007-05-21
Had many open ear Sony and various brands of headphones in the past, but this one has excellent response throughout the music spectrum. Beats all my previous models. I like the deep bass. Take if from a pro musician, these are very well worth the money...

  • Great replacement for ipod headphones!
    By AJQG04XFP267S on 2005-11-16
I tried the Apple iPod earbuds first and they were a huge disappointment. The Sennheisers blow them away. They sound much fuller and richer without having overpowering bass. The fold-up design is very convenient.

  • Good Sound but No Privacy
    By A15MSV5ENQRUTB on 2006-01-16
I'm no expert on headphone technology, but I have purchased these slick looking white headphones and I have some important bits of information to report.
    1) They sound great and are very light and portable. The fold and flip design allows you to neatly tuck them into a little plastic carrying box. So, if portability is what you're looking for, these should fit the bill nicely. And if you have a white iPod, these are a great, fashionable replacement for the irritating earbuds.
    2) If privacy is what you seek when you're listening to music, these are NOT what you're looking for. When I listen to music, I like it loud, and I often listen in a room where other people are present, such as a doctor's office waiting room, or a bus or airplane. As mentioned above, they sound great and you can get some very good volume with them. The louder, the better. That's what I always say. However, if you're listening with other people nearby, they also get to enjoy the sound right along with you. The sound leakage or noise cancelling is horrible. I understand that open air headphones will allow a lot of sound to escape, but this is ridiculous. When outsiders can hear every word the singer is singing or every drum beat, then it's time to find another product. When you feel self-conscious and embarrassed, and when people can't sleep due to your music being too loud, even when you have headphones on, it's time to find a new product. I'm moving to closed headphones with sound/noise cancelling. These phones sound great for their size, and I like the color white. But it's just not worth it for the lack of privacy.

  • Good for the money!
    By A2B9BPC5XIJCQT on 2006-05-11
When I went to buy the headphones from Amazon, the price increased from $38.99 to $55 overnight! Too much for me. I went through new egg and the shipped price was $45. Then Amazon lowers the price again to $39 & free ship! darn! it figures!
Anyway, my review on the headphones is that they are good and well worth the $40. Don't hesitate to buy these but don't get your hopes too high. There are a lot of 5 star reviews on these headphones which I think are too high. 5 stars should mean the Ritz-Carlton of Headphones and these are not they. Kind of like when you hear too many good things about a movie and when finally you see it, it turns out to be just a decent movie but not an Oscar winner. Same deal here. I gave 4 stars b/c of the nice price.

  • Rumors on the bass are exaggerated, but prepare for others to hear
    By A2F13SHJXAYG51 on 2007-01-07
These headphones are great for listening to your MP3 player or computer. They are easy to fold up (instructions actually on the headphones) and transport. For the average user, I believe you will find the sound experience quite satisfactory. I would have given it 5 stars if there was not so much of your listening experience shared with those around you. Be prepared that most people around you are going to hear what you hear unless you have the volume pretty low.

    By A2DFKP09VDOL7K on 2007-05-14
Sennheiser PX100W Supra-Aural Foldable Mini Headphones are GREAT. Light and fold up into oa smaller profile.

  • Good quality for the price
    By A8E15E5KKAQLJ on 2006-02-15
I bought these because the iPod "earbuds" were hurting my ears.
I find that I can comfortably wear these for hours each day, unlike the ear buds.

The PX 100 is lightweight and comfortable, with quite good bass response. At work, you can mostly drown out office noise with them, but still hear if someone nearby wants to talk to you.
    Recommended.

  • You have to try these!
    By A1YJ7I2OEVZCOI on 2006-04-18
I've been searching for some Ipod headphones for several weeks and have the Etymotic 6i. I was impressed with the sound of the Sennheiser PX 200s until I tried the 100s and discovered the bass that was missing from the musical balance. I can't explain the physics of why an open design like the 100s produces more bass than the sealed 200s, but it's a fact. And placement on the ears is less crucial. I've found the 200s comfortable to wear most of the day on a large head, so I expect the 100s to be the same. I'm not sure when I'll get back to the Etymotic at twice the price. It's amazing to get great sound at a reasonable price.

  • good sound and comfortable
    By AFRR3U17YX6G on 2007-03-28
These headphones are very comfortable and have good sound quality. Much better than the earbuds, which don't stay in my ears. It takes a few trys to figure out the folding sequence when putting them in the case.

  • Too expensive for what you get
    By A7F92OJC0QND on 2006-01-30
I've been evaluating headphones over the past 2 weeks - I'm planning for a long (extra long) flight. I thought that these would be great: they fold, claim to have good bass and have closed design that should keep out some outside noise.

The problem is that the only thing they do is keep out some outside noise. I'm not looking for active noise-cancelling, so this is ok. But the real problem is that it's got very little bass. I also bought (at the same time) a pair of cheap Sony behind the neck headphones for working out for $16 - they sound 10 times better than the Senns. I couldn't believe it. Why would I pay $50+ for headphones that don't sound better than $16 Sonys!

Don't get me wrong, I love Sennheiser. I own a pair of HD-497s. These are awesome for any kind of listening! The only problem is that they don't fold and are a bit bulky for air-travel. I guess I'll just hold on to those. They're typically around $60-$80 and provide better noise reduction and incredible bass and mids.

It's amazing how many crappy headphones are floating around. My wife was right: higher price doesn't mean higher quality! I hate it when she's right.

    Enjoy

  • Quality for under $100.00
    By AHMCDRMEJJJDJ on 2007-01-11
Ever since I've been using the headphones that came supplied with my iPod, I have been disappointed. I consider myself an audiophile, but how would people perceive someone who uses their Bulky Sennheiser hd450s with an iPod that is half the size. Well... along came the px100 headphones. Phenomenal quality, great range and a rich warm sound, but more importantly they're WHITE. Now I can fit in with the entire white headphone wearing iPod people, but I can enjoy the music to a higher degree.

  • Muddy highs and mids
    By A92U6B5FWOWUN on 2007-03-22
I don't get all the great reviews. I purchased based upon the reviews and have been disappointed. My Apple ear buds sound better, I think. Other people that have tried them and think they are great. They are comfortable and could be worn for hours but too much sound is missing for me. By the by, I have excellent hearing. Think I'll try something else. Thanks Amazon.

  • Thank God for T. Poore
    By A13M7ONWSBGPS6 on 2006-07-23
I really want to thank T. Poore from Cleveland for taking the time to write out instructions as to how to put the headset back in the case. I will be submitting his name for a Nobel Prize. Without his instructions I'd be a raving lunatic by now. I've checked the over age 13 block below (which is true) but Sennheiser's incomprehensible diagram on the case made me feel like a three year old. Thanks, T.P. Oh and by the way, the headset is nice too.

  • Great travel headphones
    By A2BRUZK0TD62L4 on 2006-11-14
I am not an expert on audio equipment. I do love these headphones. I have not had any problems with them hurting my head like other people mentioned with Sennheiser headphones. The audio clarity to me seems excellent. Even though they don't cover the entire ear I can still listen to my music in noisy areas and not have to crank up the volume. It takes a few seconds to get it back in the travel case, but it is easy after the first time. The travel case is very convienient it fits great in my laptop case or pocket for when I am on the go.

  • I love these headphones
    By A91FAVHJ7SHMU on 2006-12-23
I bought the Sennheiser Headphones for my iRiver Clix because I find earbuds irritating. The headphones are extremely comfortable to wear and light to carry around in my purse. I have had no trouble folding them into the case and I am able to leave the Clix attached as there is space at the side to allow the cable to exit without being trapped.

The sound quality is very good and you are not isolated from extraneous sounds as you are with closed headphones so you can hear the phone ring, dog bark etc. I was so pleased with mine that I bought another pair for my boyfriend to use with his iPod.

Wow! For the price, these cannot be beat. Solid construction, great bass response, comfortable with a convenient foldable design and protective travel case.

  • Great headphones at an affordable price!!!
    By A21ON9X9CATY9T on 2007-02-23
After reading many reviews, I decided to go with the Sennheiner PX100 headphones. I have had them for a week now & just absolutely LOVE them. I bought them to use with my Ipod Nano (much better than the cheap earbuds that come with it of course). I am by no means an "audio tech", but I can tell you that you most likely wont be disappointed with them! They sound wonderful to me. They fit very comfortably to me, I can wear them for very long periods of time, but, it is true that they do kind of make your ears "sweaty", but if your working out/walking etc. your going to sweat anyways. Ok, "girly" comment: I specificaly bought the white pair to match my pink Ipod & they look very nice ladies. Overall GREAT buy!!

  • Much Much Poorer than Hype
    By A4IDZKOPVLL4D on 2007-03-08
Diligently read the reviews. Bought after no availability at a few stores.

Bottom line- no better (maybe worse) than standard iPod ear-buds.

Very flat, limited range, not dynamic. Ok they're nicely foldable.

Senns for real hi-fi headphones are usually upper-good. These not-so.

Btw- I'm more used to Grado (best) headphones in last 2 years- 225 or 325s.

  • I don't understand how people think these are great headphones.

I bought the Sennheiser PX100W's based on the reviews of others and on their looks. They matched my white iPod. However, I don't understand how so many people think these are good headphones. They simply are not.

At the same price point, the best headphones I've heard - and I've heard many - are the Koss PortaPro headphones. The PortaPros may not be as aesthetically pleasing as the white PX100, but they are worlds away better in audio quality. The PortaPros have a wider and more faithful sound spectrum, and can be pushed to a much louder volume with far less distortion than the PX100's.

Although the PortaPro headphones don't fold into a neat little case (a feature of the PX100's that I found absolutely clumsy), they come with a lifetime warranty, as opposed to the PX100's 2-year warranty.

The PX100's were returned to Amazon within a day.
