A Mango is a sweet, delicious fruit. It can be difficult to peel and slice, however. Traditionally cooks instruct people that the following steps should be followed to open a Mango - Cut off the stem of the mango; Hold the fruit upright, cupping it in the palm of your hand; With the other hand, use a potato peeler or a paring knife to cut away the peel, following the curves of the fruit; Lay the fruit on its flat end and slice lengthwise, working around the flat seed in the middle. Cut the fruit into thin slices as desired.; Stand the mango upright or otherwise move around to carve away the remaining flesh surrounding the seed. OR you can use the Oxo Good Grips Mango Splitter.

There's nothing as luscious as a ripe mango. Growing in popularity, mangoes are now available in many stores year-round and can be eaten fresh, cubed into salads, or sliced and baked on top of chicken breasts. Helping prepare the fruit for eating is this ingenious mango splitter from OXO. The splitter is a circular white plastic device with sharp stainless-steel blades in the center and OXO's signature black comfort handles on two sides. Holding both handles, the user pushes the blades down through the mango from the top, separating the seed from two halves of mango. The flesh can then be cubed or sliced off the skin on those two halves. After the prep work, the mango splitter slips right into the dishwasher for hassle-free cleaning. --Ann Bieri MPN: 1067504 - UPC: 719812014579

  • A long time coming

    By A3G5CT86CBH0YE on 2005-08-11
This little invention I just bought cuts out a lot of mango and a lot of BS. I pay about $1.50 per mango, so losing flesh in cutting the things up is like a punch in the throat. Mangoes are well connected to their skin and seed, making it hard not to waste or at least end up with a million little hacked off pieces and cut up hands.

I didn't give it 5 stars simply because there is still a small bit of waste, but given the stubborn nature of the mango, that's inevitable. Someday someone will breed a mango that just pops away from the seed like a peach.

There's a slight learning curve on the tool, but I got it on my first try. I doesn't look like it should work but it does. Amazing and rewarding the first time you use it and have two robust shoulders taken off the seed.

  • It Works!

    By A299IDGU0LF5FO on 2006-04-14
Always avoided buying Mangos because of the hassle cutting them. Noticed this tool on Amazon and decided to give it a try (although I did not expect it to work). The design is quite ingenious. The cutting blade is flexible enough to "hug" the pit and cut the fruit away. I would highly recommend.

  • Works quite well for medium to somewhat large mangoes

    By A4B2J2XU7KPM7 on 2005-12-16
I agree with the earlier poster that this device allows you to make mango salsa much faster. Yes there is still a little cutting to get meat off the seed, but most of the work is done instantly and painlessly.

    Pros:
Makes seeding a mango almost instant

    Cons:
I don't know what I'll do when this device eventually dulls (sharpening it will be difficult)
It doesn't handle the largest sizes of mangoes

  • Hairy pits

    By A1IU7S4HCK1XK0 on 2006-06-20
The problem with mangos is that the pit is well-secured inside the fruit by a pit with long, tough fibers attached. The pit is an inconvenient flat oblong, slippery under the knife. However, if you admire the "peach soaked in turpentine" exotic taste (and I certainly do) you might wonder if there isn't some way to cut out the flesh of the mango without a long, hard struggle.

This device is positioned over the mango like an apple corer, allowing you to cut the fibers around the pit and release it from (most) of the meat. While there is still some waste, and while mangos and their pits vary in size, this is pretty good.

It certainly beats my current method of mango preparation, which is to slice along side of the pit, making two shallow halves. I dice the fruit inside the hull and slice it off that tough skin with a knife positioned flat along the skin. I get cubes of mango, and then I either try to trim the pit or I nibble it as a cook's tidbit.

This cutter is faster by far than my old method and a lot neater. Big thumbs up to OXO for figuring this out.

If you eat mango & have ever wished there was an easier way of getting to the edible part, then buy one of these things.

  • Mango Salsa So Fast
    By AJELZ0FE42N2I on 2005-11-20
Just what we didn't need was another kitchen gadget, but this one made sense and it really works.
Mangoes are becoming ever more popular and available at most markets year around. The downside is that it is difficult to separate the flesh from the seed. It usually results in a mashed mango using traditional methods.
The OXO Mango Splitter makes it foolproof to quickly and easily split the fruit while simultaneously removing the hard seed.
So much better for making massive amounts of Mango Salsa!

  • MAKES EATING MAGOES SO MUCH EASIER!
    By A3RHJR1FWPZEV2 on 2006-03-21
We have loved mangoes for years and have been searching for the best way to cut them, and to get the most out of the money that we spend on them. Well, we have found it-the Mango splitter is it!! It was an impulse buy for me (I paid $13!) and my husband rolled his eyes when I brought it home, but now-he loves it just as much, if not more, than I do! There is so little waste and makes eating magoes fun and worth it!!

  • FINALLY!
    By A3A0MP0PJ25TK8 on 2006-04-30
I was skeptical, but as a mango-lover, I had to try it. It's wonderful! I've used it four times, and have never had a problem getting it lined up over the seed. It slices close to the seed, leaving two generous halves to enjoy. Thank you, Oxo!

  • Smooth and easy to use
    By AT9U5ZE5OO84C on 2007-03-19
My family eats a lot of mangoes but they are so hard to peel and get off the pit. The first time I used this mango splitter, my mother had already started peeling the mangoes. I stopped her about halfway so I had one slippery little fruit to manage as I tried out this gizmo. The mango was the small yellow variety and the splitter left a lot of fruit on the pit. However, it didn't bruise the very ripe fruit and left me with two large halves.

I recommend using it only with the large green mangoes or standard green/red mangoes. The small yellow ones have too small a pit and you wind up using a knife so you don't waste as much.

  • My wife loves it!
    By A2CSP5COHIOBYB on 2006-11-13
My wife loves the mango splitter! She bought a mango in anticipation of the splitter arriving. When the mango was ripe, she placed it in the refrigerator, thinking that since she read there was a slight problem using the splitter with a very ripe mango, maybe if the mango was cold, it would be firmer and work better.

She loves it. It gave two perfect halves, that just needed to be peeled and sliced or cubed for eating. She tried using it without cutting off the bottom of the mango first to make a flat surface, as she read needed to be done, and it worked fine.

She said her mangoes always looked mangled and untidy by the time she finished preparing them for eating, so she think it's a worthwhile gadget, and she's buying another one to give to someone who eats a lot of mangoes.

  • Works Great!
    By AINZHV52Y5ZRO on 2006-02-23
I can't believe how well it works! And best of all, no more fiber in my teeth trying to eat around the seed.

  • I wish I could send this back
    By A2RMR2RMSD5FU4 on 2006-07-06
If I hadn't tossed the wrappings and other documentation. I would send this back to Amazon.
This so- called gadget that Cook's magazine touted heavily mashed the mangos and lost juices as though it were a juicer. The center blades don't move to adjust to different sized pits and otherwise give you a macerated piece of fruit.
My knife, cutting each side away from the pit is as wonderful as ever.
If any one finds my paper work, please return it to me and I will get my money back from Amazon.
I would give this item 0 000 not a one. there was no room for a zero

  • Worth the cupboard space if you're an avid mango eater
    By A2KNOQNZ12QZYX on 2006-07-18
As a hardcore foodie and an enthusiastic home chef, I have general disdain for cook's tools that serve only one purpose. Especially if the task can be accomplished easily with a standard kitchen tool.

That said, I wanted to see what all the fuss with this mango splitter was about. It's been featured in many cooking magazines and seems to be a top seller on Amazon this summer. So, I couldn't resist, and figured I'd just give it away if it turned out to be another extraneous tool, taking up space in my too-small kitchen.

So, I bought it. And I used it. And I was impressed.

As a lifelong mango lover, I'm really pretty good at cutting up mangoes and have never seen it as a chore or a difficulty. But, with this little tool, I was totally amazed at how much mango you actually got in the end. I would estimate that I got 25% to 50% more mango than when I cut it myself, depending on the ripeness of the fruit. It really did impress me, and I was delighted to have a much larger serving of fruit, with the same amount of work.

Do note that you do still need to use a knife to remove the skin from the two halves, so the tool doesn't perform miracles! Still, I won't be putting it in my next box for the thrift store. And I will definitely be buying even more mangoes from now on!

  • great when everything is right
    By AF55QHQTEOPF3 on 2006-08-14
This is a real timesaver for folks who do a lot of mangos. My only complaint is the mango must fit the slicers deminsions. The seed can't be too big (no way to know in advance) and the mango can't be overly ripe or the presure will smash the bottom and put juice everywhere.

Very minor nitpiks, but buyers should consider them.

  • I guess it works (mostly) but why bother?
    By A3GRPS2NYINLX4 on 2006-08-24
I'm afraid I just don't see the point of this gizmo. It's a couple of blades (bottom end is pretty sharp) that can go through mango peel. Assuming you have the seed oriented properly, the device slices two halves and leaves very little in the middle except for the seed. Great. But I can do that with a couple of knife-strokes. Thereafter one still has to recover the flesh from the peel (I criss-cross but you can slice it like a melon or whatever you want). So one still needs a knife. Which means all this gizmo does is give me one extra implement to wash. Don't get me wrong: I'm impressed that it works as well as it does on small to medium-large mangoes (the stones are NOT proportional to size). However, you still have know how the stone is oriented in advance. Well, if you know that, you can just slice around the stone anyway, with a couple of knife-strokes. I'm really surprised by the number of people for whom this product revolutionized their lives. Goopy mess? What on earth were you guys doing before??? It's not rocket science! Oxo's apple corer, which is about half the price of this one eliminates the need for a knife and replaces 8 knife-strokes. I'd say that's a considerably better implement and considerably better value. To summarize: this is as easy to use and well constructed as one might expect from Oxo, but ultimately it seems to be of limited value to anyone who's spent more than a second contemplating how to cut this most exquisite of fruits.

  • OXO Mango Splitter
    By APDDRMW8P6CUD on 2006-08-30
What a gadget! The essence of simplicity, it makes the usually messy task of coring a mango a breeze. A must have if you like mangos, particularly if, like me, you are generally a liability in the kitchen.

  • Works well -- even with peeled mangoes
    By A25UT5FMXQ6U9N on 2006-12-18
This device works exactly as advertised -- we consume a lot of mangoes and are very happy with it. No more working like a woodcarver to get the fruit separated from the seed.

NOTE: The instructions advise you to split unpeeled mangoes, but then you have to still free the fruit from the skin. I don't mind peeling the mango with an apple peeler -- it's quick -- and then this splitter can be pushed down over the end of the mango to produce two full halves of fruit ready to pick up (or cube) and eat.

There is little waste -- just a smidge where the seed tapers inward, taken care of with a few quick nibbles.

  • Not a good buy
    By A1HJ39B0CVKSP9 on 2006-02-17
I can't figure out how to get it even with the seed. Too much waste. My kids eat lots of mangos, but it turns out it's easier just to slice them up.

  • You'll eat more mangos
    By A35DSAZ6TD3J3W on 2006-08-26
Makes cutting up and eating mangos much easier (but it can't core a apple). Simple design and simple to use, works just like a similar tool I have for coring and cutting up apples. What's not to like!

  • Neat little gadget for mango lovers!
    By A7TWWUV5DNE43 on 2006-11-17
My husband loves a mango! I bought this for him and he has raved about how well it works. It's quick and easy, and it takes the mess out of eating a mango! Also easy to clean--fits right in the dishwasher!

  • Excellent!
    By A1B5UL7CLMJ9U7 on 2006-12-22
I finally ordered this gadget as I eat a lot of mangos and have always found it tiresome and wasteful manually cutting out the seed. This gadget works GREAT! I only wish I had ordered it sooner.

  • I love my mango splitter!
    By A3OY8VD5O7NUK on 2006-12-30
This makes the difficult and sometimes dangerous task of cutting mangoes easy and quick. I highly recommend this product. It works efficiently removing almost all of the flesh from around the pit.

  • This is GREAT!
    By A3M571CD4JP0TX on 2007-03-16
I, too, was sceptical about how well this would work but I tried it last night and it's awesome. It slices the mango like a hot knife going through butter!
My kids and I had a bet that it wouldn't work but we all were proved wrong and we all are glad that we were. I've told several people about this new tool before trying it and now I'm really going to rave - and take one with me to Maui for vacation too.

Mango without slippery fingers = 5 STARS AND 100% yummy!

  • Works great...until the blade dulls
    By A1DXPVASYA5U2Y on 2008-02-04
I was so excited after the first time I used this tool. I was amazed at how easily I was able to split my way through a mango. With moderate pressure, this tool whizzed right through the mango without a problem and I ended up with two perfectly sliced halves. As I am a mango fanatic, it was love at first sight with this tool.

The honeymoon was short-lived, however. After a handful of uses, I noticed I was having problems with my mango splitter. What once sailed through the mango was now giving me problems right from the get go. Just piercing through the top of the mango was work enough, and with the added pressure now required, my mangoes were quickly becoming mangled, mutilated messes, and my cutting board and counter tops would be drenched in mango juice. What's worse I could only get the implement about half way through the mango, but no more, and then I had a bear of a time retrieving the splitter from the fruit at all. At first I thought maybe I was using it on too ripe mangoes, and because I didn't want to give up on my beloved mango splitter, I gave it several more tries with mangoes of varying ripeness. Unfortunately, I killed at least a half a dozen mangoes in the process.

Bottom line...this implement works wonderfully from the start, but the blades quickly dull leaving you with a useless apparatus. I have 2 other friends that have had the exact same experience as me with the Oxo Mango Splitter, so I highly doubt it was only mine that had this problem. I have since returned to using my chef's nice to get at my mangoes. It's a bit of a pain, but at least no mangoes have to be killed in the process. Sorry, OXO, but you need to go back to the drawing board with this one.

  • mango splitter divine
    By A1K2J4IKKE0ACZ on 2006-01-08
SO simple--so easy to use, and so much less waste that cutting it with a knife. It's amazing!!!

  • Might work if the size and ripeness is just right.
    By A2Q5ZWL5GSM3U0 on 2006-10-19
I saw all the good reviews for the mango splitter so I got one. I eat mango's frequently and usually use a knife to to cut off each side. I used the splitter on a large mango that was on the ripe side. I found it was hard to push, never did get all the way through and made a mushy mess. Seems to me that it would work only if the mango was the proper size and ripeness.
BTW the same for the avocado slicer. Now both of them are off to the thrift shop.

  • Mango Splitter
    By ANUFESS1FYTEU on 2006-11-13
What a delightful gadget - works as advertised (how unusual)! Creates nice slices of mango without the mess and without ending up with all the small slivers of fruit you normally get. Love it!

  • Great Gadget
    By A1CC94SUY7LNID on 2007-01-06
I have always just used a sharp knife for cutting up the mango and would often be left with awkward pieces of the fruit around the seed. I saw this mango splitter and thought it couldn't possibly work as mango seeds aren't always central and are non-uniform shapes.
I tried it and was delighted. It was so easy and hardly any "waste". I have found that you can peel the mango before using the splitter and the whole business of preapring the fruit is a piece of cake. It's also dishwasher safe. I'm sorry I didn't but it sooner! Would definitely recommend this if you like mangos.

  • no hassel
    By A2UK7AHBSGOQJ2 on 2007-03-14
Unique tool that take the hassel out of getting the fruit out. It's fun to use and works as advertised

  • Doesn't work well.
    By A1JVIE68JPW4WE on 2007-05-12
I bought this mango splitter based on the rave reviews from other people but it just didn't work for me. It cuts down about halfway, but as soon as it gets to the tougher area of mango around the pit, it can't go any further. If you try to force it, you just end up squashing the bottom of the mango. It just made a huge mess. After trying about three mangos, I put it away and went back to peeling and slicing them by hand. I would not recommend this product.
