  • MIGHTY FOR YOUR MOUSE!

    By A1314P8MTIGN5J on 2006-03-04
What a great gadget! It is so tiny, about 2/3 a stick of gum long. But what a worker. I use 4 Macs - 2 run OS9 and 2 run OSX and it worked great on all of them. I just took it out of the little package, plugged it in to my USB port, booted the computer and there it was on my desktop as "Kingston." Drag your file to it and as the little drive transfers it, a little green light on the side of the drive will blink until everything is downloaded. Just unplug it from the USB and plug it in where you want it and bada-boom, bada-bing. I keep losing the cap, which secures very tightly to the body of the drive and pulls off.
The important thing about this, compatability issues aside, is the fact that this thing is FAST! It transfers substantial files very quickly! Love it.

  • great buy!

    By A25WM8V8SLNW2X on 2006-07-28
Okay, not a computer expert, but I am an "expert" end user. I say this is a cool little gadget! I liked the plug-and-play aspect, the small size, and, in particular, the sturdy little package. I think it can hold up to my toting it around in a shirt pocket or a purse, as the case is sturdy plastic and there is a cap that appears to be solidly attached. I put all the files I need to transfer (hundreds) on this little USB drive and it transferred quickly, especially considering I have USB 1, not 2. I also liked that all those files took up a tiny fraction of the drive's storage.

Overall, a good investment. In the local WalMart I saw 512Gb drives for $26-something. The price is right.

The one I have matches the model number that is listed on this web page and it does work with windows xp and macintosh computers. I dont know which operating system the macintosh computer was using but on the back of the product description box for this it said it works with a bunch of operating systems at least a bunch of windows operating systems. I didnt bother to read the macintosh description.

This thing saves information way faster than floppy disks, cds, or the fatter floppy disk that no one uses anymore. it transfers music files and almost any other file to the data traveler at about the same rate that mp3 players transfer songs using their usb cord. the price for this online is cheaper than in most stores so if you can wait for it to ship get it online. oh and a gigabyte of information is probably a lot more than youd need for school reports and power points. if your going to be using it for school id reccomend getting a 512 mb usb drive to save money.

  • Beware of the shipping cost

    By A3OJST7OGLEVND on 2007-02-22
It's cheap because they charge you extra for shipping. I tried to order 3, the shipping was over $26 (from Digital Media Source). I didn't go through with the order. An average shipping cost for a $300 digital camera is about $15, and for 3 tiny gadgets under $6 it's over $26? I'm sorry but that's ridiculous.

Btw, I checked another place, and the shipping for 3 was over $18. Still awfully pricey.

PS. Found the cheapest one sold by eek Technology. The shipping cost for 3 was $12.85. The total was $27.61. Not bad for 3 flash drives that size, so I placed the order. Beware of Digital Media Source, though.

  • Good product, good price

    By A1UQUDT2Q0YENM on 2006-08-24
I got 2 of these recently and I love them. They works well and quickly.

The things that set them apart from the other flash drives I looked at are: I trust the Kingston name and it has a 5 year warrenty. I don't know why the other person suggested to get the extra warrenty when his broke after 6 months.

    Pros:
    0. It works, and it works quickly!
    1. Good price even without a rebate
    2. 5 year warrenty
    3. Hole for Lanyard/keychain is on the drive and not the cap (I hate the thought of looking down at my keys and seeing a cap only! Why do some other companies put the hole on the cap only???)
    4. Plastic, but doesn't feel as cheap as the PNY one I already own.
    5. Cap fits snug and secure

    Cons:
    1. You call that inch and a half long thing a lanyard?
    2. I do like it when there's a hole on the cap and the drive so that you don't loose either. The cap is nice and snug so I'm not worried about it falling out, I just don't want to search for it when I'm done using the drive!

As you can see, I had to stretch for complaints.

  • Good data storage, but case could be better
    By A12MFA6JGX0QIQ on 2006-11-26
I've had this USB Flash drive for several months now, and I have never experienced any problems accessing or storing data on this drive. From that standpoint, the drive has been flawless. However, I like to keep my USB Flash drive on my keychain, and the plastic loop is barely big enough to allow it to sit on the metal ring of my keychain (my keychain being a standard metal ring keychain, not over sized). Finally, the plastic ring part broke, and I can't attach the flash drive to my key chain anymore. If only they made the plastic ring a little (just a few millimeters, really) bigger or if they made the plastic ring out of metal instead, this wouldn't happen. I just think the case could have been better designed. Otherwise, the drive works well.

  • Didn't work, so I returned it
    By A601TLJMZ9CZN on 2006-12-23
One of the computers I use has 2 USB ports (in the back) and is running Windows 98SE. What I did was plug a 4-port hub into one of the ports and tried using the Kingston Data Traveler. It seems there is not enough power for it. It does work when I plug it directly into one of the USB ports, but that's inconvenient, would have to move the computer out of the tight spot where it is into a place where people are likely to trip over it. But all my other USB drives work when I plug them into the 4-port hub. So, I returned the Kingston and kept the other ones.

Before you rate this as not helpful, ask yourself why. Here I am, warning you that it didn't work for me, telling you exactly what didn't work. I'm just trying to save you some money or the hassle of returning this when YOU also can't use it unless you plug it directly into a USB port on your computer. Why is this information not helpful to you??? And voting that this review isn't helpful ain't gonna make this drive work!!! Instead, I suggest you write to the Kingston engineers and explain the problem.

I'm glad to see that the Kingston employees have stopped rating my review and that normal people do find my warning helpful! :)

  • Good value for money...
    By A1KZX6SSF86EA7 on 2006-09-05
    All,
This may not be the cheapest flash-drive around, but with cheaper ones you get what you pay for. My Lexar and PNY drives are dead now. This one is still going strong. It has a rugged simple design that grows on you. It doesn't try to be to clever (aka Memorex U3 drives).

  • Very Happy With This Drive
    By A3I1BJIFFM4S21 on 2007-01-04
With this 1GB drive you never need burn a CD-Rom again. Why bother? This holds 50% more than a standard CD, and it doesn't require you to have a CD burner or a blank CD lying around.

I've found that this drive really hits the right balance of size and cost. It is big enough to do most jobs, and it is small enough that if you had to replace it, it would not be a big deal. I often use it to move Powerpoint presentations from one computer to another, or to transfer music or video.

Haven't used one before? You pull off the cap and plug the drive directly into your computer's USB port. (You don't need any software or drivers to preload - just plug it in to any computer.) When it is plugged in the computer automatically recognizes it as a new drive right on your desktop. I.e. Go to your "My Computer" section and it now shows up as a new drive. You then treat it like you would any other drive -you can just drag and drop files to it.

One final note: the place where a line attaches is on the drive body itself, and not the cap. This is good because if you attach it to something it won't slide out of the cap leaving you with an empty cap tied to your neck (or keychain) with no drive...

And finally, I think this is a great present for non-techies. My parents have finally become converts and they use this all the time.

  • Beware of Frauds
    By A2OCEWSNGZNSUH on 2006-08-27
Nowadays USB flash drive Frauds have taken over e-commerce. Don't worry, THIS is a good drive from a reliable seller, [...]. but beware of [...]. They have a lot of inexpensive drives claiming high space from name brands like Kingston and Scandisk (especially the Cruzer models). The internal drive is exchanged for a cheap drive and programmed to say 2g if you try to check it on your PC. But when you try to load 2g of files, it only allows 600k or so.[...]. it is just tempting to go after the 2GB USB for [...]over this 1GB USB for [...]. You've been warned.

  • Power hungry little thing!
    By A2CDK8URFF0YNW on 2006-06-22
This drive's nice and quick. If you want you can even format it using a disk utility program for perfect, flawless compatibility in Mac OS 9. My only complaint is that it requires more power than is available on unpowered USB ports (like on your keyboard or small hub). The storage capacity of this is simply fantastic.

  • had it for 6 months
    By A19P4L7Z88M5EU on 2006-08-23
I used it for bringing data from my work computer to my home and to transfer stuff from different computers in the office. After 6 months the drive started saying it only had 16mb storage capacity and needed to be formatted. I tried formatting it and the same error keeps on coming up. If you buy this get the warranty also

  • at this price, more than good enough
    By A1OH0FDI17TG43 on 2006-09-04
This USB Flash Drive transfer files faster than what I was expecting, has a strong built, and is small. It is not less than 3 mm thin (the Flash Drives that are ultra-thin don't come with an USB port protector... meaning it cann't be used safely as a keychain; the best way not to lose it). At this price range 1 GB is preferable (at least for me) than a "wow factor".

It replaced my old 128 MB Data Traveler (I) that will be used from now on by my sister.

  • Check OS Compatibility!
    By A3UAMOVHW9PRQ5 on 2006-03-27
I don't know what to make of the other review here. I checked the Kingston website for this product (I'm talking about the original Data Traveler, not the newer version 2 or 3), and under "compatibility" the chart showed only Windows XP, and Windows 2000.

Also, that page seemed to indicate that the product would NOT work with older USB ports (version 1.1) which were still being installed on many computers until 2003 at least. So, if you have Windows 98 on such a box, you may well be out of luck with this item.

I gave it 3 stars since I did not buy it or use it myself. It might be great but Amazon sure as heck ought to have the information here rather than making you search the web to find out if it will work on your PC or not. Since this is apparently the simplest version of Kingston's portable flash drives, one might have expected it to have the most compatibility, but apparently that's not the case.

Either way, you should double check all this for yourself before committing. I'm pretty sure there are competing products that will work on more platforms.

  • Defective Product
    By AWJ4QSOD7YBVW on 2007-02-23
The drive indicates it has 1 gb of space but only holds about half of that... I returned it for a refund. Amazon was very good about quickly responding to the problem.

  • Easy as pie!
    By A25B9CN7CGP627 on 2006-06-30
Just plug it in, then click and drag. I used it to transfer video files to another computer - it holds a lot of stuff - about four 1 hour episodes! So easy and convenient - I'm done with CDs for good!

  • Rebate is a rip-off
    By A2QDBJ7WTY854J on 2006-09-19
I bought this drive for my daughter who is in college. It supposedly came with a rebate. The rebate had to be received within 30 days of the purchase of the item. My daughter filled out the online rebate form and sent it in as soon as she got the drive. We just received a reply saying that the rebate wasn't sent in in time! Don't be deceived by the rebates. They put those on there, because they know most people won't take the time to fill it out and send it in, and then when someone does, they come up with a reason to not honor it! Very frustrating..

The drive itself works fine, as far as I know!

  • Don't order quantities
    By ACLT5N5M6QBSK on 2007-03-07
This is a misleading price unless you order just a single unit. I ordered 200 of these to send out to our customers. The shipping was over $1100.00 for 4 pounds!! In other words, the shipping charge was about 150% of the unit cost PER UNIT. Naturally I canceled the order. They are obviously making the profit on the shipping. I am sure the actual product is fine and I have used Kingston I will not order anything from this particular vendor, BlueProton again. I don't like being ripped off.

  • Short Little Review
    By A1KSO56UWS2R7I on 2006-10-12
    Pros:
    -Durable
    -Mac and PC compatible
    -Lightweight
    -Great Price
    -Reliable brand (Kingston)
    -1GB storage

    Cons:
-Cap comes on kind of frequent
    -Not too stylish
    -Not as good as Sandisk
    -No lanyard
-Must have Windows 2000/XP or MacOS9 or higher (not good for those old school users)

BOTTOM LINE: It could be faster, better, have more caps, and a lanyard. But if you have a somewhat new computer, this is a great deal.

  • Cheap but slow; not usable by ReadyBoost
    By A5JLAU2ARJ0BO on 2007-02-14
The Kingston 1GB DataTraveler flash drive is very cheap -- it can often be found for free after rebate. It's small and convenient, but speed is quite lacking. Copying files takes a long time. Worse, I just found out it cannot be used for Windows Vista's ReadyBoost feature (which speeds up system performance) because it's too slow.

  • AwesomeTravelling Storage!
    By A7OR6AI51JQ1B on 2006-11-11
I use it all the time.
I lug it around in my bag, smooshed under a bajillion books.
I plug it into a bazillion different computers, and it never complains.
My friends have a bevy of different types, and they all have complaints "falls off keychains, won't work in certain USB ports, top not secure, etc" but I have never had any sort of problem with it, in the slightest.
    AND it was affordable!
    SWEET!

  • Sleek Product
    By A36NS34TNLB8YW on 2006-12-03
WIth numerous flash drives available in the market, i was tempted by the lower price of the lesser known brands, however I went with Kingston basically because of its name and durability , and i should say i was right. This a sleek product ,probably around 5$ more than the lesser known brands, but i will take it, for you dont want to lose your documents and cherished photos!

  • look elsewhere
    By AAY0QZDGUWC7H on 2007-05-03
Look elsewhere if you want an item that works properly. I bought this item recently only to discover that this 1 GB Flash Drive will not store more than 26 MB of data. I emailed Kingston dirctly and did hear back promptly but the suggestions received still left me with only 26 MB of storage.

  • It does what it say it does
    By AERUSPEPJWWN4 on 2006-08-20
Perfect for me. It's a gig of flash storage that works on my XP workstation and my OS X iBook. How could I not give it 5 stars for doing all I expected it to?

  • Fast, Small, Convenient
    By A38CL16FO4ORHQ on 2006-08-21
This is a cool Flash Drive. Just plug it in and it Just Works. It fits well on my keychain making it very convenient. It's also very fast.

    Highly recommended.

  • I loved it so much, I bought two!
    By A2XSGH4PUZ9V8M on 2006-11-12
This is one of those "best "$20.00" I've ever spent in a long while" type purchase!

I loved the small physical size so much that I've ordered two! My automenu works great with it so that when I plug it into a USB port, it auto matically launches a list of programs I have on the drive. My portable APPs run GREAT with this! The write speeds could use some improvement, but the read speed are comparible to my 256 meg Jump Drive.

Kingston case is well designed to fit the smallest of USB ports and is rugged.

  • Kingston Data Traveler 1 GB USB Flash Drive - Convenient
    By ADHD4JZNR4AEY on 2006-11-15
I use the data traveler between 2 machines. The older of the 2 machines that I have does not have the ability to burn CD's, so I found this a very Convenient method to transfer information. I also like the ability to put the device on my key ring when I need to leave.

  • Makes A FINE Jacket
    By A1POGSPD4HN8Y1 on 2007-01-04
This USB drive is very nice for storing data, but what the instructions for it don't say that is that putting 150 of these together to make a fine jacket would allow you to store over 150GB of data, plus get you into a swanky Italian restaurant by just adding a tie and some slacks.

It's also impact resistant. The jacket, that is.

  • Excellent hardware!
    By A223NDRRYXVWED on 2007-01-04
The USB Flash Drive was easy to install into a spare USB port at the back of the computer. Windows recognized, installed and made the USB Flash Drive available immediately. Moving data around with this device is as simple as removing the USB Flash Drive from the USB port and plugging the USB Flash Drive into another computers USB port.
Pros: Continues to work very well.
    Cons: None.

  • You plug this into your usb port ...
    By A3T2AXNWPVZLYU on 2007-02-28
... and it just works. What more do you want? Small, 1GB, fast, simple. 'Nuff said.
