  • Works perfect on my Samsung LNR238W!

    By A1ZZ1GKD06NGAA on 2006-04-20
The reason that I ended up buying the VGA cable was due to the fact that the component signal (both 720p and 1080i) is subject to overscan. This means that the screen "zooms in" slighty so that you are sure to see a complete picture with no black or static edges. This is a problem though with the Xbox 360 because it ends up cropping the image. For example, the HUD in GRAW is cutoff on the corners when using the component cables. This really bothered me so I gave the VGA a try and viola!

I can now go into the dashboard settings and specify 1360 x 768 which closely matches my LCD's native resolution of 1368 x 768. Thus, I am able to see the whole screen without any overscan/cropping. The only downside is that the overall image gets "washed out" when using the VGA cable. However, this is not really a big deal because most of the newer games (GRAW, Oblivion) have an in-game setting for brightness which you can turn down to eliminate the washed out look.

I highly recommend that you at least give the VGA cables a try. Depending on your TV, you may or may not like them. No big deal though because you can just return them. However, you may find that you really like them and will be glad that you tried them out! Check out my VGA vs Component pictures at http://spaces.msn.com/theshepherdsbag/photos/ and read about my detailed testing on my blog at http://spaces.msn.com/theshepherdsbag/blog/ and you can check out this xbox forum thread for further insights at http://forums.xbox.com/2885313/ShowPost.aspx

Lastly, I have the Samsung LNR238W and there is NO ghosting issues when using the VGA cable.

  • A Must Have

    By AK4NBAU41ODBO on 2006-12-03
I, too, am a college student (seems to be a trend, eh?) and don't have a 50-inch X brand HD whatever. I got this cable to hook up to my flat-panel computer monitor which is of course better than my TV. My monitor isn't big, mind you, but the improvement is definitely noticable. I can harness my XBox 360's potential much more than with standard AV cables.

Also, as far as sound is concerned, if you're hooking this up to your computer system: the cable comes with a Y adapter that can be plugged into your standard audio card (the green, blue, and pink colored slots in the back). I have awesome speakers on my comp (not Dolby surround but a 200-watt 2.1 system) and had to look everywhere on the internet to see if this cable would be able to connect to them. I finally found it somewhere. In short, yes you can hook the audio adapter into your computer for sound (your computer has to be on to do so). My comp speakers plug into the green slot then the VGA cable (via the adapter) plugs into the blue one. Bingo, seat-rattling explosions and gunfire.

Even if you're not like some of the Richie Riches that are using this cable for their $2,000 TV and want to hook it up to your computer system, then you absolutely MUST buy this cable. You're really cheating yourself out of the full gaming experience if you stick with standard AV.

  • The best cable to get for your 360

    By A3SKF9O1I7ET5O on 2007-01-19
I read all sorts of reviews about this cable providing a "washed out" image compared to component. This has nothing at all to do with the cable but everything to do with the display being used.

If you examine the XBOX 360 output, you'll find that the same RGB pins are used to create component or VGA outputs. VGA adds the HSYNC and VSYNC pins already present in RGB signal for component.

So why do people complain about the "washed out" effect? That's because they haven't calibrated the display properly or their display can't be calibrated properly using the VGA input (my display and probably most displays have different calibration settings and processing hardware for each input). My display only allows me to set contrast, brightness, sharpness and color temperature on the VGA input, however, the hue and saturation are almost spot on from the factory so the VGA cable is the best for me since I can make use of the DVD upconversion and the XBOX 360 seems to do a better job of scaling 720p/1080i to the 1360x768 resolution of my display than the display itself using component.

If Microsoft allowed brightness, contrast, saturation, hue and temperature adjustments from the 360, this cable would truly be the best to get the highest quality output from the 360 for everyone with a VGA capable HD display.

Do yourself a favor and purchase/rent the Avia Guide to Home Theater DVD or Digital Video Essentials DVD and use this to calibrate your display for the best results using any cable.

  • Works Great

    By A1F51W08QYG8ZQ on 2006-06-02
I bought this in order to play my 360 games on my 17" CRT flatscreen monitor. It was really fast to hook up and worked without any problems whatsoever.

Please note that the cable comes with a RCA to 3.5mm jack and a VGA f/f gender changer.

  • 1080p? Beautiful... and possible on your 360!

    By AS8HU4UPLBMEJ on 2007-01-04
I purchased these cables because, along with the new Xbox Live update, you can view games and movies in 1080p (1920 x 1080 resolution). Your system will give you the option to turn on 1080p with the new update, but it won't work. These cables are the only cables that will allow you to view 1080p on your 360. And with the HD-DVD drive add on... wow. High Def movies in 1080p will make you quiet and teary-eyed.

Beware of a few things though to make your experience less of a hassle:

    1) You have to have access to Xbox Live and a 1080p television or monitor that can display 1920x1080. Otherwise you're only looking at a minimal upgrade in quality most times that doesn't justify the cost over the component cables that came with your 360.

    2) Check your TV or monitor's vga audio inputs. This cable comes with a red and white set of audio wires but a lot of monitors and TV's, especially a lot of the new full 1080p TV's, require an optical audio cable. You can get these everywhere and cheap ones are just as good as expensive ones. Best Buy has one specifically for the Xbox 360 for $8. One end hooks into the base connection on the VGA cables. Not only is the audio quality increased 10x, but it's no hassle or mess at all unless you didn't know you needed it.

    3) Some TV's don't allow you to adjust as many picture options on their VGA component channels because they assume you're connecting a PC, which usually has it's own visual adjustment controls. I found little problem here after a few changes in the visual settings available to me but video-philes may be disappointed depending on their individual TV's or displays. For me, in particular, I had no color issues or washed out picture problems unless I dropped into lower resolutions... which is pointless to do if you're buying these for the 1080p compatibility.

Do some research and avoid all of these possible headaches and you're in for a treat.

  • A must have device
    By A2A6IH0GOZVCV0 on 2007-01-02
Please note that this review deals with using this VGA cable to plug into a monitor. I haven't tried it in any HDTVs, so I don't know how it fares when used that way.

I bought this after playing a couple hours of Dead Rising on my 13-inch standard definition TV. As you can imagine, games are hard enough to see as it is, but then throw in a game where the text isn't formatted at all for SDTVs, and you find yourself wishing for high definition.

I plugged this in to an old 17-inch CRT that I've had for over five years. I put the resolution first at 1024x768, then at 1280x1024. Both looked phenomenal and extremely clear. Honestly, every game I've tried it with looks absolutely amazing.

I don't have the money for an HDTV, even a modestly sized one, and the Xbox 360 is in my bedroom (and not the living room), so this solution was wonderful for me. Because I had a spare monitor and set of speakers lying around, this whole solution cost me only the price of the VGA adapter. You should also check out one of the other reviews on here from a guy who's a college student and uses his monitor for both computer and 360 to save space in a small dorm room. It's definitely ideal for that.

Please note that this cable comes with a VGA female/female gender changer and RCA to 3.5mm (headphone) jack adapter, which can be plugged into the back of your computer, if you wanted.

Also note that if you are using the 3.5mm jack adapter and are going to plug in basic speakers that also use a 3.5mm jack, you will need a 3.5mm female/female stereo coupler if your speakers didn't come with one. It's a little adapter used to connect together two existing 3.5mm audio cables. They're pretty easy to find for under $3, so it's not a huge deal.

  • If you use your 360 as a DVD player, this is a must!
    By A1E6IUCF64GP37 on 2007-06-30
As soon as I hooked the cable up I noticed the visual upgrade immediately. The XBox 360 dashboard seemed crisper and clearer and the text looked less blurry (this was something I could see with my own eyes, it didn't take looking at some 200% zoom side-by-side comparison photos on some gaming message board to see the difference). The first thing I did to test out the true abilities of this cable was to pop in a slightly-compressed anime DVD that I own. The DVD that showed some obvious artifacts over the previous component cable were nowhere to be found with the VGA cable. The image quality was very smooth. Even the 10th Anniversary edition of Reservoir Dogs (not even the latest version/film transfer) looked noticeably better and could almost be comparable to some hi-def content.

The reason for the obvious visual upgrade on the DVD is because of the XBox 360's hidden DVD upconversion that can only be unlocked through the VGA cable (a true gem of a feature!). As far as games go, they already looked amazing with the component cable, but I did notice that they looked a little more defined and brighter. The games did NOT looked washed out like some reviews suggest. I believe that the washed out picture may have been a problem in the past, but Microsoft has since released a fix to the problem over XBox live (if your system is hooked up to the internet, you will get the upgrade for free...no need for a gold account). Most users probably never had the problem at all.

The VGA cable still includes a digital audio output, much like the original component cable did, and a headphone-sized adapter plug for the audio cables if your television set only has the single input. Just for the information, VGA is also known as D-Sub, so if your television has a D-Sub video/audio input (like mine did), it will work with this cable. Setup was fairly simple, but not exactly as simple as "plug-and-play". You'll need to know your TVs screen resolution (example: my 27" HDTV was 1366 x 768); a simple google search answered this for me. I also needed to manually change the ratio to Widescreen. Both of these setting are changed through the XBox 360's own display settings (not your television).

Obviously, if you have the XBox 360 Elite (black version), you should be using the HDMI cable for the best quality, but for the rest of us with the Premium and Core systems (white versions), the VGA is mandatory to reach the best picture quality on a HDTV. I paid about half the price that this cable retails (bought it off a user on the Amazon marketplace), but after my experience with this cable I would have gladly paid full price for a new cable!

  • A noticable improvment
    By A54WXKOAXLMRW on 2006-09-23
I was content with the cables the 360 came with, but kept hearing about the vga cables doing better so I figured I'd give it a try. I have a 37" westinghouse lcd flatpanel btw.

As far as games go there was a noticably improved picture, but not so much that I would have paid extra for the vga cable just for that.

Where it shines is that with a recent auto update over live, and when using the vga cable it will actually upscale dvds. Of course a dvd is never going to look high def whatever you do to it, but I compared the incredibles on my progressive scan dvd player to playing with the 360 and there was a significant difference. It just looked incredible. Same with a few others I tested.

Now the only problem is that 360s are unreliable overheating machines that don't require any excuse to have them die mysteriously, so I won't be using it for dvds very often. However when I do I can at least enjoy the best looking picture I've gotten yet out of my tv.

  • Significant Improvement over Component
    By AW3IJC9MQK87S on 2006-12-21
VGA is superior to component, and the difference in quality can be seen quite clearly when using this cable. The only way to get a true 720p signal from your Xbox is to use the VGA cable.

The main thing is that VGA is pure RGB, as opposed to Component which is compressed into YPbPr and then has to be decompressed into RGB at the TV end.

If you want to see a night and day difference, get the add-on HD-DVD player for the Xbox 360 and play an HD-DVD through the VGA cable and then play it through component cables.

One thing that may make component cables look better than VGA is if you have a 1080i (interlaced) television. You will be best off with the VGA cable if you have a progressive scan television at either 720p or 1080p (which are much better anyway).

  • Great Quality and Fair Price
    By A3VMJ4ZNZ20RGG on 2007-01-10
I am really pleased with the image quality that comes from using this cable. I am somewhat of an A/V newbie and could definitly tell the difference. One thing that I was unsure of is the fact that my TV manufacturer labeled the port PC Input and so I was unsure whether this was compatible and yes it is. I know some of you might be saying "oh what an idiot." but this was something I wasn't sure about. I think the only differance between the PC and VGA inputs is the way they input sound. In the VGA type it is the two red and white cables in the PC or RGB input it is the headphone or small speaker type jack. See, I don't even know their names!!! It works great and the quality is unmatched to the component and regular AV inputs, in my opinion.

The price is fairly reasonable for Xbox, I say this mainly because they are charging a whopping 99.99 for the wireless adapter and 49.99 for a wireless controller!!! I am not a college student I still think these things are a little pricey. Overall I think this is well worth the money and possibly one of the upgrades that impact's the console the most.

  • Xbox 360 VGA HD Cable - worth every penny!
    By A3NJMN6U0OFBXA on 2007-09-11
I picked up a set of these cables to connect my 360 to my 22" LCD monitor. I have a 52" HDTV and it displays 1080i wonderfully. But it's impossible to haul around an old 52" projection HDTV.

    My only gripe is I wish they would update the 360 to support something in-between 1360x768 and 1920x1080. Like 1680x1050, that would be sweet. But even my el-cheapo 19" LCD at work does admirably at 1360x768. (Supported resolutions are 640 x 480, 848 x 480, 1204 x 720, 1280 x 720, 1280 x 768, 1280 x 1024, 1360 x 768, and 1920 x 1080)

Any way the VGA cables connect your Xbox 360 to your monitor as advertised. I also use them for hooking up the 360 at work or in my hotel room if I travel (none of the hotels I've been to have HDTVs yet!)

Bottom line, if you have a 360 and a VGA monitor but not a HDTV these is a must. Personally I would highly recommend a 24" LCD (1920 x 1200 widescreen) with these - then you can get the best resolution possible on the 360 and a good sized monitor for your computer to boot. What a deal.

  • Pricy but Necessary
    By A298VPX0SUFPXJ on 2007-01-03
I had just recently purchased the HD DVD addon as I was planning on using the 360 as my main DVD player. However, I discovered that the 360 will not upconvert DVDs unless you are using the VGA cable, so here I am.

Luckily, I have a PLV-Z4 720p projector with a VGA input. When I first hooked up the 360 to the projector via VGA I did notice the "washed out" look everyone was complaining about, but this was easily corrected using some basic brightness/contrast adjustments found on the AVIA Home Theater DVD.

Now I've got the best picture I've seen so far at 1280 x 720 and DVDs look great. The 360 really does a good job of smoothing out jaggies and bringing out the best in the limited DVD format. And HD DVDs look incredible.

Bottom line, even though $40 bucks is a tad expensive, if you want to upconvert standard DVDs, get this.

  • Finally, a well thought-out product made by MS.
    By A2O2I1M1492T7P on 2007-05-25
So my HDTV died and is in the stages of RMA. In the mean time I wanted to play my xbox 360 elite. Since the DVI port on my monitor is already occupied, and the HDMI port is used by my new PS3, I bought this cable. It has the standard TOSlink optical audio jack (like the component cables do) which I used to hook up to my stereo system. But what I did notice is that MS goes the extra mile by including A. the little stereo RCA to 3.5mm converter and B. the Gender changer which would be useful to hook this think up to a CRT that does not have an interchangeable VGA cord. Microsoft could probably get by without including these, but they did and it makes life a whole lot easier. There are many complaints about washed out colors through the VGA connection, but in the spring dashboard update, MS included a feature that fixed that issue and now the colors are as vibrant as component and much sharper. This is a great cable to own. Just make sure not to buy the cheap knock-offs because there is a chance that if they ruin your console MS will void your warranty.

  • 1080 goodness... EXCELLENT cable
    By A28M6WD9ZV7X9U on 2007-08-30
If you do not have an HDTV, but you do have a monitor you're willing to play on, then this cable is VITAL.

I have two Dell 2007FP monitors... note, these are full screen, NOT widescreen. I was disappointed with my 360's clarity over the composite cable (the yellow - not the RGB hi def cables).

In came this VGA cable... now I'm getting 1080 goodness and I can finally see all these details that were impossible to make out before... The clarity is vastly increased.

When you plug in the VGA cable, the 360's available options for full screen monitors are...

    640x480
    848x480
    1024x768
    1280x720
    1280x768
    1280x1024
    1360x768
    1920x1080

I went with the 1280x1024, which is a ratio of 1.25 (my monitor is 1600x1200 which is the typical fullscreen ratio of 1.33)... So technically I should use the 1024x768, but I can't really tell a difference in the ratios... I'm very happy with 1280x1024

As far as the widescreen options, I'm not sure, but I assume there are just as many choices for widescreen.

As I said, if you don't have an HDTV, this cable will make your 360 crystal clear on a computer monitor!

  • ??? I dont get it ???
    By A154KN082CVXRC on 2007-01-17
I bought this cable because i only have one component input and the 360 has no HDMI out. I wanted to use the component input for my Wii, but after seeing the crappy picture quality with this I'll live with composite for the Wii. The cable is probably only good for DVD upconversion. Component has a far superior picture that's not as washed out. The VGA cable made my 360 dashboard look bad too. Even after i changed the display settings to my TV's resolution it looked completely washed out and colorless. So unless you have a 1080p TV and want DVD upconversion through an analog cable don't buy this. You'd be happier with component cables.

  • Washed out on 1080p HDTV
    By A1OVGRA41DP4C6 on 2007-01-27
I got this for use with the Xbox 360 HD DVD add on for my Samsung LNS4095D to get full 1080p, but to my disappointment, this cable vastly washed out the color on my set compared to the component cable which is bright and sharp. However it does upscale dvds fairly nicely, with exceptoin of being slightly washed out blacks compared to component as well. Im not much of an audio/videophile type but even I can see the difference clearly.

I guess I should have done more research as I have found out my set does not send the proper color output from the vga connection, which is designated PC Vga. Either M$ provides an update for my set or I will try to return this expensive cable and stick to the component.

  • Good for Samsung HDTV's and PC monitors
    By A129P5YS3TC9Z on 2007-04-03
I took a gamble on this and purchased the VGA cable after reading numerous reports that the colors are drab and washed out on HDTV's. Initially, I was disappointed because compared to the component cables, the default settings for VGA look terrible compared to the component that came with the 360. (reason for 4 stars)

I can't say this for all HDTVs but if you own a Samsung with Game Mode on. You will find a better picture overall that can look as vivid (without the crushing blacks) and less sharp than component cables. This can be accomplished when you bring contrast levels all the way up and brightness levels down. Microsoft worked with Samsung to develop Game Mode for the xbox 360, so I am unsure of the results with other brands.

For PC monitors, I noticed that in the dashboard settings you can set your resolution for whatever inputs you are using. They have several resolution options ranging from 640x480 to 1920x1280 so it's great for gamers on a budget.

  • Good cable
    By A3KQE3BCGDP75D on 2007-05-12
This cable does exactly what it promises. The picture on my 32" Olevia is gorgeous, and the surround sound experience is well worth the price. The only problem I encountered was that I couldn't tell either from the image on Amazon or even looking at the box itself if this cable actually had an optical audio port, even though the features section claimed that it did. If they had an image of both ends of the cable, this minor detail would have been instantly cleared up. That being said, buy this cable if you are connecting your XBOX 360 to a LCD T.V. and want to enjoy surround sound.

  • Beware 1080i HDTV owners!
    By A291TL5D8L7GGA on 2007-07-31
I ran out of room for all of my component cables and figured using the VGA connection for the 360 was an easy sollution. The xbox website states that the VGA cable supports all HDTV resolutions. I found out the hard way that is WRONG! I have an older HDTV that only supports 480i/p and 1080i. Once having this hooked up to my VGA connection and the system I was able to view the VGA settings. There is NO resolution choice for 1080i widescreen HD. Since my TV doesn't support 720p or 1080p I was stuck with standard definition through this HD cable. Be warned if you have an older TV that supports a VGA connection but only 1080i! Back to the component cable I go and trying to find a good sysytem selector.

  • Excelent Cables...whith extras!
    By A3MIQ344SVZFUH on 2007-07-26
not only do these cables make the picture on your sreen look amazing but the come with a gender adapter so you dont need to worry about buying one of those and an audio adapter so you can use your standard speakers with your 360 if you wish to. Amazing!

  • Looks great, go only with XBOX 360 Cable
    By A3O35NUWBBSWPK on 2008-02-23
I used Microsoft's VGA cable with the XBOX 360, and it looks great on my LG 22" Widescreen LCD Monitor.

Be sure to use the Resolution section of the XBOX 360 Console viewer to maximize what resolution is available for your monitor. Its under system properties of the XBOX 360. Be sure to try all the resolutions, to see which one looks and feels the best. Be aware that I have to use two different resolutions. A higher one for the XBOX 360 Games, and a lower one for the standard DVD player.

    Personally,

I found that my monitor can handle all the modes, however, the 420p looks perfect. The following is a link to the Monitor I have. I have a 22" Wide LCD Black Monitor.

Here is a summary of its specs:

    LG LCD Model : L226WTQ-BF
22" CLASS WIDESCREN LCD MONITOR (22.0" diagonal)

    WIDESCREN FORMAT
    1680 x 1050 resolution
    Wide at 16:10 aspect ratio
    2MS ULTRA-FAST RESPONSE TIME

The only thing I have to do is downgrade the resolution by one step to view DVDs without distortion. The resolution right below 420p using the XBOX 360 Browser.

The best part is that ALL my XBOX 360 games handle the 420p resolution with awesome clarity. And when I say Awesome, I mean it. They look as good, (if not better) then almost any of my friends XBOX 360 Games using their HD TV hooked in by Microsoft's HDMI Component Cable hookup.

I have talked to friends who have used similar solutions for their LCD Monitors to play XBOX 360 games, and the truth is, Microsoft's cable is a great guaranteed way to go.

Like most reviewers, I too hope that Microsoft will put out a DVI version for its XBOX 360. However, for now, there are inexpensive couplers that can convert HDMI output (from the XBOX 360 HDMI Cable) to DVI input. Unfortunately, My XBOX 360 does not support HDMI, so I went for the VGA cable, and I am floooooooooored by the results :0)

  • I can play HD on a cheap monitor now!
    By A2RRUX6XO7XJMF on 2008-03-29
This is an excellent XBOX 360 to VGA (monitor) converter. I've used this on a CRT and an HP LCD monitor. The graphics on the LCD look incredible. The best option for this is to choose 1280x1024 in the display settings. I've done multiple comparisons with the TV and the difference is obvious. The image on your monitor is extremely good and far crisper than the TV, but some monitors work better than others. A good way to hold you over until you want to buy an HD TV. Best $38 I've spent in a while.

  • hd made easy
    By A21LNY21D9U58U on 2006-08-24
For the price of this cable, you will be able to enjoy your favorite 360 games in High Definition. Easy to set up and works great! One of the best accessories for your X-box 360 yet.

  • Well worth buying
    By A2P0E3N5UWTU9J on 2006-09-02
works great with my ViewSonic VX922 LCD monitor. The only thing that is negative about this product is the audio cord is too short to reach my computer forcing the purchase of an extension cable. Its definitely worth buying if you want to play your 360 on your computer monitor. However, I do not recommend trying to connect it to a CRT monitor. The picture was bad enough to make me cringe (I'm not sure why but I think it could be because of the HD resolution).

  • This GREAT!!!
    By A50UZMBRBUZQN on 2006-09-07
I have it hooked up to my Dell 2407FPW. I play a lot of Call of Duty 2 and SF2, everything looks crisp. As for the sound it depends on your computer speakers, mine rock! I can never go back to component mode or any other. To bad Microsoft does not support DVI connections.

  • A fantastic solution at a rock bottom price.

I am a college student who can not afford the $1500 dollars to purchase an HDTV. Considering that I found my last T.V. in a dumpster, Microsoft's VGA HD Av cable is the perfect low cost soulution. Owning a decent 19 inch CRT moniter one can achive 720p (1280x720).

Also it is the only way (at the time of this review) that one can upscale DVDs on the xbox 360. I addition it frees up the stock AV cables for me to use without unhooking my system. My only critisism is the lack of this product for the original xbox.

a bit of distortion at the top of the picture, but otherwise nice stable conversion.

  • Good hook up, above average picture.

This is a good solution if you want to hook up the XBox 360 to a computer monitor or TV which has a VGA input. I left two stars off because the colors look bland in comparison to the component cables. With that being said, the XBox 360 VGA cable still makes a nice picture. And with the VGA cable the HD DVD drive can up scale DVDs to 720p, 1080i, or 1080p if your monitor or TV is an HDTV

if you don't have an HD TV like I do. I have a dell ultrasharp 19 inch monitor. I hook up the VGA cable direct . and wow, what a different.. I can set the resolution. and it goes into HD mode.. its awesome.. clear picture.. excellent.. I will buy 50 inch LCD HD set but not right now.. so, if you don't have HD TV and want HD hook it up to your computer monitor using this cable..

  • Very good item !!

If you dont have a tv in your room this item would be the best , all you do is just plug it into your computer screen and speakers and your set to go ,and the graphics are HD (depends on your computer screen sometimes), its very easy for me to use it and when i want to use the computer i just switch the wires right back.
