Tiny LoveDVD MagIQ - Dot the Cowx$299.99

(12 reviews)

Best Price: $49.95 $299.99

MagIQ DVD is a breakthrough in helping babies develop critical social, emotional and cognitive skills by enabling real-time interaction between a cuddly "Active Companion" and digital media. Your child can watch as this adorable cow responds to on-screen action with an array of synchronized words, sounds and exclamations -- all while encouraging your baby to do the same.

These specialized "Active Viewing" experiences help form a "MagIQ triangle" between your baby, the companion and the television. Your child will no longer stare passively at the screen -- instead she will look aside at her friend, pondering its reactions. This causes her to explore her own feelings and react proactively to the stimuli on the screen. Running time of DVD: 45 minutes.

My daughter received this toy as a birthday present for her 1st B-Day. She loves it. The video is very educational. My daughter actually knows all the songs and dances every time she hears the music. It teaches the kids lots of things, like waiving Hello and Bye Bye and playing Hide-n-Seek. I would recommend this toy for every child.

  • Overpriced and over-rated!

    By A1YP58YSQN0QQE on 2006-08-08
This is probably going to stand out as a stark contrast to the raves. I bought this product nearly 9 months ago for my then 1.5 yr old son.

The mfr make claims that this product interacts with the provided dvd and cd. This toy is merely a TIMED RECORDING OF PROGRAMMED RESPONSES. Don't believe me? after setting up your unit, put your tv on mute, or pause the dvd, belore long, you'll realize that the toy is not doing anything dynamic or spontaneous (and after it's engaged, doesn't need the dvd to generate responses). Another way to prove this is to rewind or forward the dvd, the product will not respond appropriately.

I will admit the dvd is a little interesting to babies/toddlers, but not worth $50, or even half of that.

What renders this product somewhat useless is that IF your dvd/cd is damaged or if there's background noise (a playgroup or have guests over), the toy will not engage and then it sits as a plush toy that only makes 2 noises when it's belly button is pressed. I can buy toys with more capabilities on the clearance aisle.

    The bottom line:
This product's worth is only in novelty and would make a better (but less-useful) gift as oppposed to an investment for developmental purposes.

For the $50 spent, one would be better off investing in a couple Blues Clues DVDs or the Fisher Price Laugh & Learn Puppy (or both).

Ask someone you know that's had it for more than a couple months if they are still satisfied with their purchase. I've been through a lot of toys with my busy little guy and this one gives me a little remorse.

  • A great purchase... Loved more and more as time passes

The previous reviewer who doesn't like this product is correct in his comments about the "interaction" of the doll. But since I had used the demo toy in the store, I was well aware of the capabilities of it when I purchased it. I think the interaction is plenty good for a child... maybe not for a techno-teen or adult, but great for the audience for which it is made.

We got the toy when my daughter was 10 1/2 months old. she is now 13 months and she loves it as much (probably more) now than when we first got it. she asks for it almost every day.

the animals are SO darn cute and cuddly and soft (we have both the sheep and the cow). excellent quality. so loveable. both my 13 month old and my 4 1/2 year old love to hold them. plus, they have a little belly button that can be activated in absence of any CD or DVD. so you can just play with the animal alone. you press the belly button and it sings or says a phrase. just too cute.

I got my daughter the cow (12-36 months) but she loved it so much that I simply had to get the sheep. even though the sheep one is for 3-12 months, it is just fine. she will continue to enjoy watching the younger version for months if not years. even my 4 year old likes to watch.

they only have one DVD per doll now, but they are coming out with accessories soon (sept or oct I think) so that each doll can have more than one associated DVD. you can bet we will be getting them.

she claps and bounces with the songs. she waves. she laughs. she is really interested the whole time. there are a surprising number of concepts covered in each DVD. but not an overwhelming amount. it seems that whoever developed the video really knows what they are doing as far as introducing concepts that are perfect for this age level (wobbler) yet will still be appropriate as she grows to a toddler.

oh, forgot to mention... there is a bonus CD you can take in the car with some of the same familiar songs from the video and some new ones. my daughter loves the CD, too!

last comment... I am not sure what the previous reviewer is referring to when talking about the broken CD or DVD or the interference of other noises in the room. we have experienced none of that.

  • My daughter is 2 and she loves this toy!!!

I have a two year old and she loves this toy. She drags it everywhere and she dances, sings, and plays right along with it. I would recommend it to anyone with children. Sometimes it is hard to configure to your TV but I founf all you have to do is turn the volume up louder until it configures and after it does just turn it back down and your good to go!

  • Developmentally appropriate but ...

    By A1DDQZYV920VDW on 2006-12-13
Nice toy but overpriced for what it does. I was not aware that it was a pre-recorded response as the manufacturer explained that the cow "interacts" with the DVD. The only interaction it has with the DVD is the synchronization at the very beginning of the DVD. The lack of true interaction made the toy a disappointment because it does not make "random" comments, as stated by the manufacturer. The cow makes the same comments each time you play the DVD, in the exact same place in the video. I think the manufacturer's definition of "random" is that the cow makes a few different comments throughout the DVD.

Another issue is that we have yet to make the cow respond on cue with the DVD as it always seems "just off" from the DVD.

The DVD is developmentally appropriate for the children as stated. But the manufacturers explanation of the toy was over-exaggerated. If you buy it, just beware of how it really works so you won't be disappointed hearing the same responses every time you play the DVD. As stated previously, know that you cannot pause the DVD and keep the cow in synch. You must play the DVD from start to finish. From a child's standpoint, I'm sure it'll eventually be a hit and that is what really matters. After all, it is to entertain and enhance the video watching experience for a baby, not for an adult.

Great potential, but just not there yet. Would I buy it knowing what I know now? Probably not, but my 12 month old hasn't discovered it yet. My opinion may change once she notices the DVD and cow "talking" together. Meanwhile, my 4 year old is enjoying the cow she has named Clara Bell and thinks it is worthy of being on her Christmas list.

We purchased the Cow for my 1 1/2 year old son for Christmas and he absolutely loves it!!! He wants to watch it every night before bed. He picks up the stuffed cow and says "Moo-Moo" and puts it in front of the TV to synch it. The songs are great and he has learned many new words from playing along. It also came with a CD for the car which my son loves to listen to. I found that I have to sometimes turn the volume of the TV up to synch it and then lower it when the video starts. Also, occasionally if my son shakes the cow too hard it will lose its synchronization. I highly recommend this toy and it has kept my son's attention for the last three months.

  • Excellent toy for stimulation and interaction!!
    By A2KI1ZX1GBXYCB on 2006-05-04
I bought this toy for my son, who at the time was 8 months-old. I bought the version geared toward older children ranging from one to three years of age. The video/toy is rather expensive costing around $50 at our local toy store. I didn't want to have to buy a second one later to keep up with my child's growing intellect. At any rate, at first he paid attention to the interesting characters on screen but moved on to other toys shortly. After a month of occasional viewing, this video has sky rocketed to his favorite selection. The video makes more direct contact to the viewing child along with the stuffed toy synched to the show. My son claps along to the appropriate songs and even laughs at the humor in the program. It gives me great pride to see he has actually learned from this video rather than just watching it as he does other educational videos. He enjoys this video more because he is able to interact with the characters rather than sit and become hypnotized by what is on the screen. I love this toy and will recommend it to just about anyone. (Even my husband enjoys watching the video with my son!)

  • Samara gives it 2 thumbs up!!
    By AK4E423TSTZ56 on 2006-02-02
I recently purchased Dot the Cow for my 15 mos. old daughter, Samara. From the moment I took Dot out of the box, my daughter LOVED it! She didn't want to let her go. I had to wait until dinner tme to put the batteries. My daughter reluctantly handed her over. By reluctantly, I mean she pitched a fit to the high heavens and the cow had to pried from her arms. Samara loves laughs and giggles with on screen characters and dances when they sing. My only issue is with the battery compartment. I am having a hard time screwing the screw in far enough so the batteries stay engaged. When they lose contact, it causes the cow to unsynch and I have to start it at the beginning of a chapter to re-synch it. Samara doesn't seem to mind, though.

  • Glad I bought this and not the lamb and puppy
    By A2P4S4GEIYXDCM on 2007-01-07
I purchased the Dot the Cow when DD was 6 months. It made more sense for me to invest in the product for 3 years with Dot rather than for 6 months with the puppy and lamb since it was a bit out of budget. Now she is 15 months and still loves and enjoys playing and watching the DVD. This remains one of her favorite DVDs and stuffed animals.

I wish it were a bit more educational, like along the lines of the Little Einstein and Brainy Baby DVDs. The DVD is very basic in promoting peekaboo, "where is my...", imagination, and colors. There are no abcs, counting, or 1st words involved. I guess it is more fun than it is truly educational.

  • DOT THE COW
    By A2KAWBO39PDCAJ on 2007-01-19
My 10 month old son was drawn to the cow and the dvd instantly. He actually dances to the music. He really pays attention to the tv while the dvd is playing in a way he never has before. The first cow would not interact with the dvd or cd but Tiny Love was great in exchanging the cow for another one. They even tested it before sending the new one out to make sure it would work. Expensive toy but worth it.
