Just need to say something By A2IKX8W1WS9DT4 on 2006-04-02
After reading some of the reviews on these NOW cds, I had to put my two cents in. I do own and like all the NOW cds. NOW does put some good song on their cds, but there is some songs I don't care for. I could not believe some of these people saying that they don't like some of these songs that I do, but everyone is different and entitled to their own opinion. I don't believe all the songs are chart toppers like they say they are. I think some of the songs on the cds are on there just to make the cd sound better. If you listen to each one, they each have their own different sound if you listen to it more closely. When I bought the first NOW cd, I did not think it would up to NOW 21. I will continue to buy these NOW cds as long they keep making them. Sometimes I can tell if a certain song might make it on the next NOW cd like SOS-Rihanna, Check it Out-Beyonce, Pump it!-Black Eyed Peas. So I have to say is keep making these cds. You're just not going to please everyone with the songs you put on them.
Not The Biggest Hit Seeker But Some Good Tunes By A11D1KHM7DVOQK on 2005-11-03
The twentieth edition of Now That's What I Call Music proves that they can still do it. While this edition is clearly too full on rap, it is by far not the worst in the series.
The rap collection features favorites from the summer and fall's biggest hits, with Missy Elliott providing a rap and dance twist on "Lose Control", a rap-funk song by the Black Eyed Peas, and a guilty pleasure from The Pussycat Dolls. Ludacris's "Pimpin' All Over The World"'s production saves the song through the subject manner isn't the most appealing. The CD also features a new song from Dem Franchise Boyz. The rap may be overloading at first but it's definitely a pleasure nonetheless.
The R&B section features new artist Rihanna with "Pon De Replay" and holding the title of "song of the summer", Destiny's Child's "Cater 2 U", a nice Lyfe Jennings tune, and a funky and fresh pop-R&B song from Natasha Bedingfield. The R&B songs are all excellent choices though "Must Be Nice" was less played on Top 40 radio.
The pop section of the disc includes new artist (on a NOW) Kelly Clarkson with "Behind These Hazel Eyes", and new pop-rock sensation, The Click Five. D.H.T.'s "Listen To Your Heart" is on the disc but the dance mix was more perfered. The Backstreet Boys are a guilty pleasure however they don't put talent in their work. All of these songs were pretty big, The Backstreet Boys one being the worst on the charts.
The rock section includes rock favorite Weezer, Fall Out Boy's addictive "Sugar We're Going Down", and Lifehouse's "You & Me". The rest of the CD pretty much holds on it's own, however, the Coldplay song may make some pop fans fall asleep.
This edition doesn't have the biggest hits, however, most of the songs hold on it's own. While it doesn't get the best grade, it's still work looking at. 3 stars.

A Solid Collection of Hits By A2P40XMS48WCHU on 2006-04-07
I've always written how the American NOW compilations do not even come close to the British ones, and my opinion has not since changed. NOW 20's track list, however, is solid and pretty good for the American series. It has mostly good rap songs (which can be sometimes rare in this series), great rock songs, and not an overload of mediocrities. I'll go in depth.
1. Missy Elliott Feat. Ciara & Fatman Scoop - Lose Control...A
A great rap song - Missy Elliott has a great style and her lyrics are actually understandable and enjoyable. Ciara is a nice addition to the song. Fatman Scoop's random screaming in the background wasn't essential, but it at least adds some energy to the track. The music's actually interesting and something different from everything else.
2. Black Eyed Peas - Don't Phunk With My Heart...C+
Their first album was stellar, and their second is as well. But this was one of the worst tracks on "Monkey Business" and did not deserve to become a single. Annoying, but not horrible.
3. Pussycat Dolls Feat. Busta Rhymes - Don't Cha...A-
A really good rap song - Busta's rapping is a good addition to the song, making this radio remix better than the original on the Pussycat Dolls' album, "PCD". A dangerously catchy chorus elevates this song to a pretty high grade.
4. Rihanna - Pon de Replay...B+
Pretty catchy, and a good party song. But it gets pretty irritating after a while. And the "dip it low and you pick it up slow" from the first verse directly copies from Christina Milian's "Dip it Low". That's so unoriginal, Rihanna!
5. Ludacris Feat. Bobby Valentino - Pimpin' All Over the World...B
Good music, but it's not much without the video, which was, by the way, partly shot in Africa.
6. Bow Wow Feat. Ciara - Like You...B
Bow Wow's returning to the rap scene was really unneeded, but Ciara's chorus makes this song better than mediocre.
7. Dem Franchize Boys Feat. Jermaine Dupri, Da Brat & Bow Wow - I Think They Like Me (Remix)...C
This song does not deserve the publicity, and I'm stunned why people like this. It's worse than mediocre, it's horribly irritating. And much of the song is bleeped out because the original is so dirty. Rap just isn't rap when it's edited, and this song is proof. But even without the editing I don't think this song has a chance. Annoying "yep"s in the background and mediocre rapping...just skip it already.
8. Destiny's Child - Cater 2u...B-
Mediocre for Destiny's Child. Actually pretty boring. But they have great voices.
9. Lyfe Jennings - Must Be Nice...C+
Mediocre.
10. Natasha Bedingfield - These Words...A
A great "new" artist who actually found success with this song a year earlier the US. Great songwriting about bad songwriting (if that makes any sense at all) and a good voice. Now I'm just wondering when her brother Daniel's going to release another "If You're Not the One".
11. Kelly Clarkson - Behind These Hazel Eyes...A-
The only American Idol who earned over twenty minutes of success, Kelly's finding massive success with her second album, and for a reason - she's got an awesome voice, and pulls off rock quite well. This song was brutally murdered by the radio, but that's why I've moved onto the remixes (not on this album).
12. D.H.T. - Listen to Your Heart (Unplugged Version)...A
Though Furios F.EZ's hard trance remix of this song is a lot better than this unplugged piano version, this amazing cover of the Roxette track deserved all the fame it got. Edmee's got a fantastic voice and this is a perfect song for her. Beautiful song also.
13. Backstreet Boys - Just Want You To Know...A-
The Backstreet Boys' newest album must have been the #1 most unwanted comeback of all time (let's just hope N*Sync doesn't follow...*cringe* Justin Timberlake), but this is their best song. And this comes from someone hard to impress by the Backstreet Boys, but they pull off this rock song pretty well.
14. Click 5 - Just the Girl...A
A really good rock song which many can relate to.
15. Franz Ferdinand - Do You Want To...B
Atonal, but Franz Ferdinand has a good reputation, so I'll let it slide. But this is definitely evidence of a sophomore slump.
16. Weezer - Beverly Hills...A+
Unfortunately it was flattened, torn apart, and buried alive by the radios, so I will review it as it was still last summer when I first heard it. This song is amazing and the chorus is way too catchy to believe. But I don't need to write this, as most people already know.
17. Fall Out Boy - Sugar We're Going Down...A
An amazing song, but it's only good if you can put up with songs where you can't understand what they're saying. Seriously, it took approximately six times looking up the lyrics to actually realize what's being said here. But the music is great, and this song overall is a pretty good rock track.
18. Lifehouse - You & Me...A-
An instant classic.
19. Coldplay - Fix You...A+
I've read mixed reviews about this song, but personally, I think its amazing. Following a vaguely similar buildup as Led Zeppelin's "Stairway to Heaven", this song just keeps you listening until the end. The rockout part at the end is magical.
20. Keith Urban - You'll Think of Me...B
It's somewhat annoying that Keith's been on NOW albums consistently for a while but his songs aren't as popular as, say, Gretchen Wilson. I'm starting to think Keith's been put on these albums not for popular songs but just so a default country artist could be there. A good song, but it could've been replaced with something better in the Country department.
So overall, this is a great selection of songs, some amazing, some decent, and some mediocre to bad. I'd suggest you buy this, as it's a good list of tracks.
Overall, this album gets a B+.
ok but not the best By A1OGG21MRNCFQT on 2006-08-14
this album was ok but not as good as now 16 which was my favorite. here is my review of now 20
1. Missy Elliot f/ Ciara & Fat Man Scoop-Lose Control (A-) I love both missy elliot and ciara. glad Now had some music sense to include missy. Troppo bello!
2. The Black-Eyed Peas-Don't Phunk With My Heart (B) Defenetly not best BEP song but solid. glad Now kept Phunk and didn't change it to Mess like those losers at Kiss FM and other stations. if they changed it, it would've been really stupid, since parents could just look at the title
3. The Pussycat Dolls f/ Busta Rhymes-Don't Cha (A) the chicks are hot. especially Nicole (lead singer) if i was a chick in that band, i think i'd become le$sbian. anyway, hot song improved with busta. i have the uncut busta rhymes remix myself. i like all these ladies' singles.
4. Rihanna-Pon De Replay (D) NO NOT REPLAY PLEASE! my least fave single next to the annoying, DISCUSTINGLY overplayed and very whiny and b-itchy Unfaithful. she didnt even write that song. a dude did! i like If Its Lovin That U Want and SOS.
5. Ludacris f/ Bobby Valentino-Pimpin' All Over The World (D-) i usually like Luda, but he was aiming for Radio Disney as his target station when he wrote this song. lacking major substance. Che scifo!
6. Bow Wow f/ Ciara (B+)Love the beat. Ciara comes again with her second collaberation track this time helping out Bow WeeWee. Bow WeeWee, Now's squeeky clean rap pet. To me, Ciara saved this dude from landing on the rocks.
7. Dem Franchize Boys f/ Jermaine Dupri, Da Brat & Bow Wow-I Think They Like Me Remix (D) Not inspirational and one of the worst tracks on here. and these kids need to go to school because Dem and Da arent words. Bow WeeWee doesnt deliver, either. Now should have left his part on the cutting room floor since they're edit-happy. And no they dont like you, im sure Radio Disney does, though.
8. Destiney's Child-Cater 2 U (B-) A sweet and worthy track but not their best. Soldier was their best. RIP
9. Lyfe Jennings-Must Be Nice (C) I forgot this song. Not my cup of tea.
10. Natasha Bedingfield-These Words (I Love You, I Love you) (B) She looks cute on her album cover. my ex-girlfriend loved her. is it just me or does she sound an awful lot like Pink? but why have her singles all been about writing songs? VH1 buffets on Natasha.
11. Kelly Clarkson-Behind These Hazel Eyes (B) Did anyone notice she's cross-eyed on her album cover. she looks like she had just snorted some crack before they too her picture. i like this song. but its seriously too old to be on here.
12. D.H.T. f/ Edm'ee-Listen To Your Heart (C)Overplayed. she has this total soccor mom image. shes kinda hot though. i have the dance version. VH1, im sure, enjoyed D.H.T.
13. Backstreet Boys-Just Want You To Know (C) not a big fan but i like this one better than the last single on now 19. this one is more upbeat
14. The Click Five-Just The Girl (F) Typical of Now to have this one. Jesse mccartney must have written this song, realised it was a mediocre skip-material piece of trash and then sold it to these suckers. worste on here. it should have ended before it started. nothing but pretty boy pop. they put the P in p-ussy power. finocchi tutti quandi su!
15. Franz Ferdinand-Do You Want To (C)Sounds like a typical euro track. its not bad...if ur in the mood for a Beatles rip off.
16. Weezer-Beverly Hills (B) One of the most true to life songs on this bill. kind of pretty and sugary, though.
17. Fall Out Boy-Sugar, We're Going Down (A) The best on here. pretty dark and the chorus talks about suicide. im surprised Now didn't apparently have a problem with that since their edit-happy.
18. Lifehouse-You & Me (C) Not my favorite. the dude that sings sounds like Creed.
19. Coldplay-Fix You (F)I hate coldplay. their so whiny and down about everything. not one upbeat song from them and everyone makes such a big deal on this trash. they need to fix themselves cus they're manic depressants and put me to sleep. buono per niente!
20. Keith Urban-You'll Think Of Me (D) No country for me. the same artist to end all Now albums...Keith "R'edn'eck" urban. please!!!!
Now 21 looks slightly better than this set, although it's not the worst. so enjoy! buon appetito
Excellent 20th version of this compilation series! By A2LNEZD3YBO12O on 2005-11-16
Now, they've made it to the 20th Now! This has been a very successful series in America even after so many versions of it in the UK and other countries. This is a well rounded collection, as they select some good songs. The first half is good, but the second half has a strong rock section. Even the Backstreet Boys' rock-driven song blends very well into the rock section that includes Weezer and Coldplay. When I bought the first one in 1998, never did I expect it to last into the 20th some 7 years later. I have given them as Christmas gifts too. They've had some good and bad collections, but they keep getting better at it. This NOW collection is well balanced. The Keith Urban song, while it did come out in 2002, blends well with the mostly 2005 released songs here. Get this one under your Christmas tree in December too!
- At last a Now C.D. with a satisfactory amount of real rock on it!
     By A1Q6KVOLE0HO3R on 2005-12-03
For years I've been glancing uncaringly upon this compilation series since it nearly always fails to provide a decent amount of good rock hits, but finally on its 20th issue there is something to be said for its rock portion. There are nine songs that I like on this C.D., and only one of them is of the rap genre (Don't Phunk With My Heart). The rest are all of the rock variety, the best likely being Weezer's "Beverly Hills". This song is decidedly awesome for its unique rhythm, loud guitars, catchy chorus, and clever usage of what seems to be a voicebox attached to a guitar (like one Peter Frampton would use). Then there is the great Fallout Boy hit "Sugar We're Going Down" (which has a great music video). I love this tune for its good lyrical flow, energetic chorus, and overall superb chord progressions. Lastly, I'd like to point out the greatness of "Listen to Your Heart". I originally despised this song since the lyrics seemed so awful, but eventually I grew to appreciate the heartfelt vocals and mystic melody. This compilation is the best Now one yet, and I would highly recommend it! Watch out for the rancid Backstreet Boys and Keith Urban tracks, though.
- another way to waste $20
     By AA6GFSABYPFQO on 2005-11-05
when one looks at the tracklisting of the what should be the LAST installment of the long crappy now series, they should see that they're money could better be spent on something else that is actually good. but wait, does anyone look at these tracklistings? Some people will buy it even if they dont like half of the songs, because thats just how they are. Some won't look at the tracklisting because the albums are all crappy and they know what to expect.
ok enough with my biased opinion that these cd's will never be good. Now before you go ahead and tell me my review isnt helpful because you think this cd is good, I will say that there is some good here. Franz ferdinand's "do you want to" is one of the cathiest songs of the year. so is Weezer's "Beverly hills" and fall out boy's "We're Going Down". You and Me, from lifehouse was one of my favorite songs of this year, and I like fix you (coldplay) to some extent, at least more than speed of sound, and click five is at least tolerable, but five or six songs can't save a 20 song compilation, especially since each of those songs, with the exception of franz ferdinand has been most murderously overplayed. If someone hasn't downloaded fall out boy yet then the chances are they don't like it. You and Me has been shooting around both tv and radio since about may, and despite the fact that fix you is about the least played coldplay song ever, its still found ways to be overplay on Tv. Come on, the only song not overplayed out of all 20 is franz ferdinand, and that still doesnt make it worth it to buy this CD because you could just buy the real album.
other problems remain. genre shifting, including country with the ever present keith urban, songs that would have made an innovatinve mix in april but make a dated one now, all the things that the creators never see fit to fix.
everything else on the album ranges from bad to worse. rap and hip hop is more than half the cd, and most of the crap doesnt deserve to be considered music. its just pisses me off that there is so much more good music out there and this series sells millions of copies every few months when they decide to release. by now they could release a full cd of crappy hip hop artists teaching cooking lessons and idiots would still buy it and hype it as "the best one yet"
but who cares what I say. You're of course going to buy thins, and you're of course going to say my review wasn't helpful because I just described everything you do, because most of you would know good music if I shoved it down your throat.
- here is the official now, vol. 21 tracklist. this is it. in official order. OFFICIAL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

     By on 2006-02-25
As in all my other reviews, I will review each song individually:
1. Missy Elliott-Lose Control: Catchy hook, phat rhymes and an appearance from Fat Man Scoop earn this song a good mark. Rating: A
2. Black Eyed Peas-Don't Phunk With My Heart: An OK song, but way overplayed. Rating: B+
3. The Pussycat Dolls-Don't Cha: A sexy song with catchy beat and even catchier chorus. Rrrrowl! Rating: B+
4. Rihanna-Pon De Replay: Good beat, but vocals weren't very good. Rating: B-
5. Ludacris-Pimpin' All Over The World: A good song, but Luda can do better than this. Rating: B
6. Bow Wow-Like You: Ewww. Too sappy for me. Rating: C
7. Dem Franchise Boyz-I Think They Like Me: I like this song, it's very good. Rating: B+
8. Destiny's Child-Cater 2 U: I've said it before and I'll say it again: stop singing! You guys are over! Rating: C-
9. Lyfe Jennings-Must Be Nice: This song was a little too weird for me, what with the narration. But because it wasn't horrible, I will give it a B.
10. Natasha Bedingfield-These Words: Catchy rhymes and an eclectic mix of backing beats net this song a decent mark. Rating: A
11. Kelly Clarkson-Behind These Hazel Eyes: I like Since U Been Gone better. This is just poor. Rating: C
12. D.H.T.-Listen To Your Heart: Um, try using another instrument besides piano. Rating: C-
13. Backstreet Boys-Just Want You To Know: Better than Incomplete, but I'm still not too keen on the Backstreet Boys. Rating: B
14. The Click Five-Just The Girl: This sounds like a clone of the song before it. Rating: B, Originality: F
15. Franz Ferdinand-Do You Want To: Not as good as Take Me Out, but a very, very good song. Rating: A
16. Weezer-Beverly Hills: There's always a song on one of these CDs that gets a really high mark. And this is it. Rating: A+
17. Fall Out Boy-Sugar, We're Goin' Down: A good rock song, but tone down the poppy vocals a bit. Rating: B+
18. Lifehouse-You & Me: Hanging By A Moment was good, but this one is dismal. Rating: C
19. Coldplay-Fix You: Not as good as Speed Of Sound, but a good song that proves Coldplay can make decent follow-ups. Rating: B+
20. Keith Urban-You'll Think Of Me: I hate country. Rating: D

- Vol. 20
     By A3Q1FVRV0CRYTH on 2006-07-20
'Now! 20' is a pretty decent collection of current hits we all can enjoy. This of course is subject to a few exceptions, Dem Franchise Boys being one of them, but fellow rappers Ludacris, Bow Wow & Missy Elliot more than pick up the slack with their contributions, and while Ciara doesn't have a track to her name she lends her talents to both Missy's opening smash 'Lose Control' and Bow Wow's 'Like You', two of the best songs on the album. Black Eyed Peas also lend a bit in the rap department, and while 'Don't Phunk With my Heart' got tiring after hearing it every five minutes on the radio, it's still a decent song and worth a listen to every once in a while.
Rihanna makes her debut with 'Pon De Replay' which is still not a very good song, but there is a not very good song here that eventually grows on you, and that's 'Don't Cha' which irritated the fire out of me the first time I heard it, but now makes me sing along in embarasment and amusment.
Destiny's Child really needs to hang it up, since 'Cater 2 U' is boring as crap. Lyfe is great, love the song, love his album, he's just awesome, and his new song is great too. Natasha, brother to David, is also great. Love her style and voice and creative effort on her album, this song in general too. DHT gives us palatable techno/pop with their cover of 'Listen to Your Heart' while Keith Urban steps back in time a bit to give us an oldie but a goodie, actually 'You'll Think of Me' was the first song I heard from the Aussie and I loved it so much I bought everything I could by this guy.
Now for the rock set, I saved a special group for this...The Backstreet Boys. WHAT THE F#$%! They think their rock stars now huh. This song is rediculous. They need to just accept the fact that they're over, washed up, no one likes them! Now Click Five, Franz, Weezer, Coldplay, Lifehouse...we can all live with this, and thank god for Fall Out Boy. Amazing song, amazing video, amazing band! Oh yeah, and I want to make special mention of Kelly Clarkson for proving that American Idol is not a curse. She's freaking awesome and I admitt no shame in saying that. LOVE HER!
- Really Cool music

very nice music to listen to .It has the top songs in many genres and it had a nice mix of artists. Very good CD
- still slipping..
     By A18K1OJJ4FWDGE on 2006-01-11
The NOW series was pretty revolutionary when it first started. The first several discs in the series are packed with great music, most of them #1 hits. The last few offerings seem a pale shadow of previous releases. Many #1 hits have been left out. It's still a decently good CD with the usualy varied types of music contained within. In all honesty, I think anyone who is seriously interested in collecting sets of music like this, is far better off getting the version of the series released in Europe. To give you a hint on the difference, the U.S. released series is up to NOW 20, the European released series is up to NOW 61. Although this is still a decent CD, it doesn't have anything I really "can't live without" contained on it. NOW 1-5 are probably the best discs released in the entire U.S. series. 6-10 are still pretty good overall. Any of the series, from NOW 11 on, all seem to slip further into bring an overall worse compilation of music than each previous year's release.
- Yet another average Now compilation.
     By A3FBGZ4E6KGIW2 on 2005-11-07
Each time I know that a Now CD is going to be released, I become excited, hoping that this is the number that is going to be a CD that I can listen to all the way through. This was a promising release until I noticed the glaring omission of a few songs, including Shake It Off (how dare they)
My vote for good song choices: Lose Control, Don't Phunk With My Heart, Don't Cha, Pon De Replay, Like You, Cater 2 U, Behind These Hazel Eyes, Just Want You To Know, Just The Girl
Some songs I want to see on Now 21: Shake It Off, Luxurious, Gold Digger, Stickwitu, Hang Up, Stand Up For Love, Boyfriend, Shine On (couldn't hurt to include Ryan Cabrera), Dance Dance, We Be Burnin', If It's Lovin' That You Want, Can I Have It Like That, My Humps, Outta Control remix, I Don't Care (some of these are charted within Billboard's Hot 100)
- NOW 20 is SO GREAT!!!!!

     By A1X93ES4DITTWK on 2006-01-14
Don't waste your money on this. All of these crappy fizzled out pop songs are played repetitively on FM radio, so it's not like your life is going to fall apart if you don't have "Don't Cha" at your finger tips. You're better off getting a blank cassette tape and recording from the radio.
- Not worth buying

This CD is filled mostly with overplayed songs, and some songs that weren't even real hits. I've pretty much ignored the NOW cds after like NOW 9, there's a few good songs but mostly garbage. Looking at the songs on Now 19, I'd have to say that CD looks somewhat better than this one.
1. Missy Elliott - Lose Control (2/5- Annoying, and I'm sick of it)
2. Black Eyed Peas - Don't Phunk With My Heart (3/5- Not too bad, I like Don't Lie better though)
3. Pussycat Dolls w/Busta Rhymes - Don't Cha (3/5- I kind of liked this song, but now I find it annoying)
4. Rihanna - Pon De Replay (3/5- It's ok, but again nothing great)
5. Ludacris/B.Valentino- Pimpin' All Over the World (1/5- You can do better than this)
6. Bow Wow W/Ciara - Like You (3/5- An ok hip-hop/r&b song)
7. Dem Franchise Boyz - I Think They Like Me (0/5- It hurts my ears, not worth 1 star)
8. Destiny's Child - Cater 2 U (2/5- Solider was better)
9. Lyfe Jennings - Must Be Nice (3/5- I'm not that familiar with this song, but it seems like an ok R&B song)
10. Natasha Bedingfield - These Words (4/5- Finally a decent song)
11. Kelly Clarkson - Behind These Hazel Eyes (4/5- I petty much like all of Kelly's songs)
12. DHT - Listen To Your Heart (4/5- Not as good as the original Roxette version but still good)
13. Backstreet Boys - Just Want You To Know (1/5- This song ended the Backstreet Boys shortlived comeback, it's absolute garbage and was not a hit, it really doesn't belong here)
14. The Click Five - Just The Girl (3/5- Ok, but not that great)
15. Franz Ferdinand - Do You Want To (4/5- This wasn't a huge hit either, but it's a good song)
16. Weezer - Beverly Hills (4/5- One of the biggest hits of 2005, and one of my favorites)
17. Fall Out Boy - Sugar, We're Goin' Down (3/5- This is alright, but I prefer Dance, Dance)
18. Lifehouse - You & Me (4/5- Another huge hit in 2005, I think Hanging by a moment was better, but this song isn't bad.)
19. Coldplay - Fix You (2/5- It puts me to sleep)
20. Keith Urban - You'll Think Of Me (3/5- I don't like much country but this is ok)

For all of you who have nothing better to do than completely bash every Now CD that comes out, GET A LIFE, If you prefer to go listen to your heavy metal, go listen to your heavy metal, if you wanna go listen to your classic rock, go listen to it. Yes, they may suck in your eyes, but they fit for many of us, and that works for us.

Rap/Hip Hop: 9/20: Comments: Pon De Relpay is overplayed, Destiny's Child sucks, who exactly is Lyfe Jennings. He needs to get a life before he sings again. B
Pop Rock: 10/20: Lives and dies as half of album is Pop/ Rock. Mixed feelings. B-
Country: 1/20: Bad song from 2002. Come on at least put in Gretchen Wilson. D
Overall: C+

- Now Compliations are Bad For You
     By A3KUEXN9M9FOMH on 2005-12-14
And i'll tell you why. People who buy Now think that they are getting an accurate presentation of music that is being made in 2005. As a result you get all these whiny teenagers who think they have a broad musical taste because they listen to both Keith Urban and Fall Out Boy.
What they don't realize is that they have a very narrow musical taste because the music presented here is little more than radio friendly pop that has been over played and over done over the course of the 6 months that this compilation actually covers. There is little innovation going on here, and this is really a small sampling of popular music. To get an accurate representation of music and creativity, you have to go outside of the mainstream and explore a little bit. Go ahead, it won't hurt that much to expand your horizons.
Go buy the new Quasimoto album, Sleater Kinney, Queens of the Stone Age, Spoon or any of the other creative musicans recording music in 2005. Just don't but this crap. The Franz Ferdinand song is good though. One out of twenty ain't bad.

Woohoo! This is the first 4 star "Now" review I've given in a long time. This is actually a really good mix and the song choices are pretty good. You get pop, hip hop, country, and rock all on the same CD.
1. Missy Elliott - Lose Control: A / Really strong hip hop song. Missy is grear and her singles are always awesome. Good kick-off track!
2. Black Eyed Peas - Don't Phunk With My Heart: B / Cool song, but overplayed so I'm sick of it.
3. Pussycat Dolls w/Busta Rhymes - Don't Cha: B / This songhad to grow on me. It gets stuck in your head.
4. Rihanna - Pon De Replay: B-/ This is OK.
5. Ludacris/B.Valentino - Pimpin' All Over The World: C / Again, and average hip hop track.
6. Bow Wow W/Ciara - Like You: C / See above.
7. Dem Franchise Boyz - I Think They Like Me: C-/ My least favorite.
8. Destiny's Child - Cater 2 U: B-/ Not the best by DC, but it's decent.
9. Lyfe Jennings - Must Be Nice: C+ / It's ok.
10. Natasha Bedingfield - These Words: A+ / This song never gets old for me. I love the hook.
11. Kelly Clarkson - Behind These Hazel Eyes: A+/ Another huge hit for Kelly. Awesome song!
12. DHT - Listen To Your Heart: A+ / Great remake of the Roxette ballad. The bridge is incredible.
13. Backstreet Boys - Just Want You To Know: B+/ BSB have had better, but this is a good uptempo.

15. Franz Ferdinand - Do You Want To: B / Cool song.

"NOW 20" marks the 7th aniversary of the U.S. "NOW" series, which shows know sign of slowing down. And why should it? As long as their are hit songs, there will be "NOW"s. Althought not the masterpiece that "NOW 19" was, "NOW 20" does a terriic job of summing up many of Summer 2005s best singles, including 3 ARC Top 40 #1s ("Don't Cha", "Pon De Replay" and "Listen To Your Heart"). I was also very aware of the fact that the album switchs throught genres with total ease and flow; it's impressive being able to move from Missy Elliot to Keith Urban. The 20 Chart-Topping Hits:
(1) Missy Elliot feat. Ciara and Fat Man Scoop "Lose Control" A-. "Misdemeanor" has devoted her career into creating quirky, dance-rap numbers. Although this isn't as innovative as "Get Ur Freak On" or "Work It"; a constant energy (courtesy of some 80s dance samples) flows throughout the song making it very infectious. Fat Man Scoop and Ciara also add their skills for an end product which is highly enjoyable and energenic. This is one of Missy's best.
(2) Black Eyed Peas "Don't Phunk With My Heart" A-. While the "Monkey Business" LP was not AS GOOD as "Elephunk"; this 1st single was an exception. It really is a fresh, new beat for the group to work with; a big feat considering the scope of their work. The lyrics are very crisp and original; creating an incredibly catchy tune that is flowing with passion. I think it's even better than "Let's Get It Started". A very underrated hip-hop song, and a display of the BEPs in top form.
(3) The Pussycat Dolls feat. Busta Rhymes "Don't Cha" B+. Noone would have thought Las Vegas song-and-dance team would have become Top 10 artist, but that's what happened in Summer '05. The sex appeal of the fabolous Dolls combined with a killer beat make one terrific single. Busta's lyrics are very refreshing to hear on the mic again; especially after his legal troubles. The material may be standard, yet its made up for by the life and energy of the song.
(4) Rihanna "Pon De Replay" C+. Since Jay-Z invested so much in Rihanna being one of the first artists he signed as President of Def Jam; you would expect more of a payoff. "Pon De Replay" is a decent song, programed perfectly for summer; but it's not much more than that. Despite the catchy beat, it reamains hollow in everyway. It's good-natured summer fun, which pales compared to work by Ashanti, Beyonce and Amerie.
(5) Ludacris feat. Bobby Valentino "Pimpin' All Over The World" B+. As with everything off "Red Light District", it isn't about extremes or genre defing. On the other hand, this is a rare glimpse at the "nice" (as in not threatening or THAT explicit) side of Ludacris. Bobby Valentino also sounds terrific with his smooth voice, and there is a peaceful relaxed tone to the song. It's not the best work from Luda (like "Stand Up" or "Southern Hospitality"), but a pretty good one.
(6) Bow Wow feat. Ciara "Like You" B. The two very talented (yes, Bow Wow is talented rapper these days; much better than when he was "Lil" ) atrists work well here to create a light somewhat-touching, hip-hop tune. The writing is pretty standard, yet the single works because of the chemistry between Bow Wow and Ciara (who are a real life couple). Although "Hold You Down" had more impact; this is still a pretty likable tune.
(7) Dem Franchise Boys feat. Jermaine Dupri, Da Brat & Bow Wow "I Think They Like Me" (Remix) D+. Jermaine Dupri is a very smart and talented man, thus one must reasonably ask why he would make such an embarassing song. This is a single created for the sole purpose of making money; there is no art involved. Dem Franchise Boys have zero charisma (they're the rap equivelent of O-Town), and the featured artists are all viewed so briefly that they offer nothing. So So Def NEEDS MUCH BETTER songs than this to stay alive.
(8) Destiny's Child "Cater 2 U" B-. Hopefully this will not be the groups final single, because I believe it is one of the group's weakest. As always the group can harmonize like no other, but slower songs are not their strength. Also, there biggest and best songs are about female independence; and this really seems odd for them, being about pleasing their man. An OK song, but nowhere near the group's best work.
(9) Lyfe Jennings "Must Be Nice" B. A good R&B tune with a sweet and relevent message. The problem is that he seems to be trying to immitate Anthony Hamilton, yet he doesn't have the vocal impact and conviction than Hamilton does. This is well crafted song that could have been more, yet it's hard to dislike a song this good-intentioned.
(10) Natasha Bedingfield "These Words (I Love You, I Love You)" A. Very interesting and refreshing to finally here a song about writing a song. I am a writer and I can simpaphize with much of what she is singing about. There is much truth and very powerful references throughout the single; heartfelt conviction is something that cannot be faked. Just like with her brother, Daniel, the music was well worth the wait to "cross the pond". This is one of the best and most original songs of the year.
(11) Kelly Clarkson "Behind These Hazel Eyes" A. She was the first and, hands down, the best "American Idol". Just like "Since U Been Gone", this blows away the whole "American Idol image" to create a deep, powerful pop-rock ballad. There really is heartfelt conviction in these great lyrics, and the beat really rocks as well. The "Breakaway" LP not only shows Kelly as a true artist, but also contains one of 2005's best singles.
(12) D.H.T. feat. Edmée "Listen To Your Heart" A. This is that rare beast: the remake that equals the original in every way. The Belgian dou takes a Roxette classic from 1988, and make it their own by delivering the beautiful, touching lyrics with a powerful voices and impact. The focus on lyrics over insturmentals is essential in bringing out the song's beauty and power. This is so much more than a good remake, it's one of 2005's best songs.
(13) Backstreet Boys "Just Want You To Know" B+. Even their lesser singles still sound pretty good, mainly becuase they really do have smooth and strong voices (yes, they do). This is not great BSBs, like "As Long As You Love Me" and "Shape Of My Heart", yet there is still some power and emotion in the lyrics. The teen-pop trend may have faded, but they are still one of the best pop groups out there today.
(14) The Click Five "Just The Girl" A-. Yet another entry in the recent "light, pop-punk" explosion of the last few years. This is one of the better ones though because it is very catchy, well polished and surprisingly sweet as well. Compared to other recent songs in this "genre": it's far better than The Darkness' "I Believe In A Thing Called Love", and only a step-or-two down from Bowling For Soup's "1985". There really is a nice zip to it.
(15) Franz Ferdinand "Do You Want To" B-. A little over a year after their 1st single, "Take Me Out", and I still havbe the same comments about the group. They have some original beats and are charismatic, yet there is still something that just doesnt quite gell. The pieces are there, but they need to take it all to the next level. Not a must-hear track, although I do not discourage you for one second from listening to it.
(16) Weezer "Beverly Hills" A-. Far more mainstream than their previous works, such as "Buddy Holly" and "Hash Pipe", but still a very good rock song. It really does rock, and there is a sense of joy in there cool, catchy, clever lyrics; it's impossible to not get it stuck in your head. Not as breakthrough as their past singles, yet you can tell the the group is having a damn good time.
(17) Fall Out Boy "Sugar, We're Goin Down" A. Yes, the song may be bizarre, and have no real maening in the end; but it is still a fantastic rock song. If nothing else, it is clever, quirky and different from almost every other rock song realeased this year. The group is finnally on top and are have a hell of a time there. I didn't just like this because it was different thought, I liked it because it is fun and very cool. You will not find a more original and better rock song than this in 2005.
(18) Lifehouse "You & Me" A-. Much more relaxed than the previous tracks on the disc, and that's just fine. Wheras "Hanging By A Moment" was a terrific modern-rock track; this is a wonderful adult contemporary track. Lifehouse slowly use their vocals to create beautiful lyrics that carry much power and dimension. This is a very good pop-rock single, and definetly a huge comeback after the "Stanley Climbfall" LP (2002).
(19) Coldplay "Fix You" C-. Coldplay isn't a very good group to begin with, but even this is a new low for them. For a group that focuses heavily on insturments, and little on lyrics; it is a very deadly move to take away both. In the end, there is really nothing left here, as the song becomes a hollow and meaningless waste. This wasnt even a charting single to begin with.
(20) Keith Urban "You'll Think Of Me" A-. This is one of Urban's weaker singles; meaning it's still pretty damn good. The lyrics are beautfully written and are set to a very smooth beat; yet the song doesn't have the "rockin'" feel of "Somebody Like You" or the powerful images of "Making Memories Of Us". Still, this is a very good contemporary country single.
Bottom Line: ***1/2. There are a few bad selections here, but the good ones are so abundunt that we really don't mind. Just like 2004, this has not been a great year for music; yet compilations like this gather a very good collection of the year's best tunes. This is one of 2005's better compilation albums.

I logged on a week ago and looked at the tracks, and my heart started racing. The songs are great and the variation is awsome. As i think about it and it isn't in my hands, my stomach is churning. Here is how i'd grade the songs.
1) Lose Control-A+ easy to listen to and i can barely help myself from dancing when i hear it.
2)Don't Phunk with My Heart-A+ another easy listen and from the best band eva... The Black Eye Peas!!!!! Check out thier CD Monkey Business, My favorite!!!!!
3) Don't Cha-A+ this song just rocks, but is it a fast or slow song? listen closely and decide
4)Pon De Replay-A great, but I've heard it one too many times
5)Pimpin' all over the world- B+ good, but Get Back and Number One Spot was better. When will he release The Potion? Check out Luda's CD The Red Light District, great stuff
6)Like You- A+ great jam, i'm puttin my money on this for best make-out song at the next teen choice awards
7) I Think They Like Me- N/A never heard but it's a rap! Hoora!
8)Cater 2 U-F the worst destiny's child song eva, even lose my breath was better and that got old after two days
9)Must Be Nice- N/A never heard
10)These Words- A+ the great feel-good song of the summer and fall. Check out Natasha's CD Unwritten, great stuff
11)Behind these Hazel Eyes-A+ awsome tune by a true vocalist, check out Kelly's CD Breakaway, well mixed and sang
12)Listen to your heart-B acoustic version is much easier to hear each time you turn on the CD instead of this blaring base
13)I Just Want You To Know-F no excuses, BACKSTREET BOYS ARE GAY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
14)Just The Girl-B+ Good stuff, but not excellent
15)Do You Want to-B+ pretty good, yet thinking about the video just makes me mark it down.
16)Beverly Hills-A- Real good
17)Sugar We're Going Down-A-/C+ Depends on what mood i'm in
18)You & Me-B- ladies, don't be hatin'the gangsta 'cause this just ain't my type a thang
19)Fix You-C- I like Coldplay, but the dudes baby musta been keepin him up all night to make such a terrible CD. They just reused all their old melodies with new words
20)??????-F who cares cause it's country!

More of the same recycled hip hop, rap, garage band crap. Ludakwis, Keith Urban Cowboy, etc...
Most of these songs/artists I have never even heard before. I give it 1 star for including Backstreet Boys though. For nostalgic purposes only!
