    (17 reviews)
Best Price: $5.00
Learn the Nikon D70 for 5 Bucks is a concise, bright, four-color, quick-reference manual for one of the most popular digital SLR cameras in the market. The text is integrated with large photographs and the Nikon's menu photographs or software interface shot interface screen captures, (either s). Brief tips or warnings at page bottom address any ancillary points not covered in the basic how-to text. Readers will quickly learn how to master the key skills they need to take great photos with their Nikon-- basic shooting tips, adjusting the LCD monitor, managing white balance, creating panoramic shots, using the zoom feature, downloading images with a card reader or USB cable, printing photos, and so on. With a 6x7 trim size and an extremely affordable price, this book isn't designed to be a complete reference, but is a useful guide for people users who just want to learn the basics of their Nikon D70 camera.

Really An Extended Quick Start Guide By A32V0YYAWJVHJO on 2005-01-14
First, I purchased this guide primarily out of curiousity, so I really can't be too disappointed with it -- but I certainly did hope for something more.
Simply put, the book is an extended "quick start guide" for using the D70 primarily in automatic ("A") mode.
In fairness, the book has a few nuggets that go beyond the "A" on the dial and simplify the Nikon manual: e.g., setting up night shots or action shots, and shooting close-ups or portraits. It also provides quick instructions for using popular functions such as the self timer, which aren't always easy to find in the manual. And, its illustrative photos for finding and identifying controls, buttons, etc. on the D70 are very good, providing a better roadmap than the manual.
Unfortunately the book stops exactly where most D70 owners are ready for more: it has only two (very brief) pages covering manual and priority modes, with even briefer explanations for programs such as shutter and aperture priority settings. (It actually describes the manual and priority modes as "for pros only"!) It shows how to display a photo's histogram without any explanation of how to interpret or use the information.
In other cases, the book provides advice without any detail or instructions. For example, it advises reducing use of the monitor to extend battery life without any thoughts or suggestions on how, beyond using it "sparingly" -- it doesn't suggest reducing the auto off time for the monitor.
For someone who bought a D70 to really use its capabilities, this guide falls way short and will disappoint. For someone planning to use the D70 as a more sophisticated or more capable point-and-shoot camera, this book does present the basics quickly and directly.
Perfect Primer By A2K40JBQHJY1HH on 2005-01-26
This book is exactly what I've needed with my new Nikon D70. It is the perfect primer. The user's manual included with the camera was overly complicated and detailed, and the quick start guide with the camera gave too little information. This small book is just right for a novice/beginner photographer who wants to get familiar with the D70.
There are plenty of color photos that show clearly the various buttons and settings required for different functions.
If you want detailed, advanced instruction, look elsewhere. If you want basic, beginner information however, then this book is for you.
Nice Pictures, Bad Book By AN9FBR8282WY2 on 2005-03-07
This book looks very slick, and has good photos of the camera, but I have a camera so I don't need photos of it. The content is generally worthless, and occasionally incorrect.
It covers pretty much every subject I have a question about, though answers none of them. You know it's bad when it starts with how to charge the battery.
Not even worth the $5.
50 odd pages of sparse information By A3IY316DRNF5F2 on 2005-05-23
But probably suitable for folks who absolutely cannot wait to use their D70s and find the Nikon manual too intimidating. At best, one realizes, whoa, there's a lot stuff to remember! At some point one would have to refer to the manual to fully understand what Mr Gregory does not elaborate on. And if you can afford that excellent camera, you should skip to the D70 manual to fully appreciate everything the D70 offers. I say don't spend the 5 bucks this if you are seriously considering using the D70 for more than an expensive automatic point and shoot. I give it 2 stars however for whetting one's appetite wanting for more.

Too basic. Manual contains more info.
- So I figured, what do have to lose?
     By A19VKRX2WMHTXY on 2006-08-15
It's only five bucks. Well, I lost five bucks. Don't bother buying this book. If you bought a D70 and you need this book to figure out how to work it, you should have bought a disposable camera. Do you really need this book to tell you to turn the ring on the lens to zoom? If you're sitting at home with your $1000 camera in your lap waiting for this book to arrive so you can learn how to zoom your camera, then this book is for you. Overnight it if you have to. Otherwise, don't buy the book, send me four dollars so I can enjoy a cup of coffee at Fourbucks. At least one of us will get something for your money and you would have saved a dollar. It's a win-win.
- Very small price, very small value
     By A2HC9549CZAKNN on 2005-08-09
After reading this book cover to cover, I had picked up only one shortcut button sequence and no tips or tricks. This is a good book for someone who has never picked up a digital camera or an SLR camera before (if you're used to a normal 35mm camera and need to learn both digital and SLR at once you'll be overwhelmed and this can help you). The pictures are good and the explanation is simple enough, but if you've used a digital or an SLR you can pick most of this information up without a book. It didn't go into anything that was difficult to understand. I bought the book before the camera and learned nothing from it, so I can imagine that if I had the camera first I wouldn't even have bothered buying the book.
- SoSo Book
     By A3TVMGUVLZZKSF on 2005-08-23
This is an ok book for the Ultimate BEGINNER, But is generally
insulting to the intelligence with any SLR experience!
- not worth more
     By A1EAH433QK3L3E on 2005-06-05
Nothing added that the manual or online help from NIKON doesn't say
- It's 5 dollars
     By A29XAMAL7FEWLW on 2006-02-26
It's basic, but it's 5 dollars. It's a nice little basic intro book that is easy reading.
- Nice little book!
     By A2JTP44N8BMQ93 on 2005-10-08
This proved to be a handy little reference for a very good but somewhat complicated camera. The format is good and the price is right! 5 stars if it had just a bit more material. Then again for the price perhaps I should not be expecting much more.
- Excellent though brief.
     By A2RHKW3F3R7MO0 on 2005-09-07
This is an excellent though brief summary. It lacks the details necessary for the serious learner about the Nikon D70. For a quick rundown for the beginner, for this camera, it is quite good.
- A good book for D70 owners.
     By A2DWPG5HZ3TVXD on 2006-08-08
Good overall could have gotten a little more detailed about some settings. I would recommend it.
- Less is more
     By A2RER59V5G4GQJ on 2006-11-05
This is the best quick start guide for the D70 that I've seen, especially if you are visually oriented. The succinct, step-by-step instructions are supported by color photographs and diagrams. It's an accessible introduction for technophobics and technophiles alike...especially if you hate sifting through the fine print in the manual. An excellent value.
- 35mm to Digital in a FLASH for 50+ year olds
     By A30CE6GFM4590R on 2006-11-12
Nikon should have included this book with the camera. I still use it from time to time for quick reference.
