For camping with a bad back... By A1XIH5RKV4UPGV on 2007-01-11
My wife and I have a problem. We both like camping, but we both have back problems. This product allows us to get a decent night's sleep in a tent, which means we can camp more. Yeah, it's one more thing to have to pack, but it rolls up nice and fits just fine in the back of our jeep with our tent and sleeping bags.
I wouldn't get this product if you are a minimalist, it's pretty bulky and it's too big to hike with. However, if you go camping like we do, then why settle for the smaller and slimmer Therm-a-Rest models?
If you have a bad back and like to go camping, it is the only way to go outside of getting an inflatable mattress (too bulky, needs electricity) or just buying an RV (which isn't camping at all).
great compact sleeping mat By A28R4D0T6ETNAO on 2006-08-01
I got this sleeping mat for about 1/2 year now.
this thing is very comfortable, this mat include a self-inflatable mat, a foam pad, and a soft zipper cover.
I have a Honda Element and I put this mat in the car with back seat fliped up. I can have a great hours of sleep with this. This is not really wide so don't expect you can roll yourself around.
Besides use this in a car, I also take this with me to camping and stay over night at my friends place (I even prefer this thing than a sofa)
The reason I gave it 4 stars mainly because the price is sitll a bit too high in my opinion... but I think this is the best self-inflation sleeping mat that's out there. If you use this type of stuff alot, is well worth ur invesmen.
This mat infate fairly fast, I never encounter any problem with it yet.
Expensive but worth it? By A2NJQF2UI60VGT on 2008-05-25
The negative reviews I have seen on this sleeping pad all point to its expense.
Everyone seems to agree that this is perhaps the most comfortable option out there for a car camping sleeping pad.
It certainly beats the overly-bouncy Aerobed air mattress that we were using.
You can get much the same comfort by simply buying a tri-fold 4" mattress. In fact, this is what I wanted, however my wife thinks that they are "slippery and not as comfortable at the folds".
The fleece topping on the Thermarest Dreamtime is very nice to the touch. The air-mattress allows me to get it a touch firmer than an all foam mattress. Not to mention that if rolled tightly it takes up 1/2 the space. Personally, we will probably NOT roll them tightly in order to not compress the foam (as space is not an issue). Because of this, I sorta wish the compression straps were a few inches longer.
It is basically a good quality self-inflating air mattress (foam inside a two valve air mattress) with a normal foam pad over it, both inside a cover that is a very nice fleece on top and polyurethane underneath (and thus less likely to get dirty).
It is one of the warmest pads you can get with a total R value of 8. (It can get very, very cold at night with a regular air mattress sucking away all your body heat)
Some have said that it is expensive because it is "memory foam". I have memory foam at home and this is not memory foam, however you do not want real memory foam in this application as it would double its weight and it would not unfurl very well in the cold.
In short, the individual components may not cost ThermARest anywhere near what they sell it for, but they were the ones to do the research to implement a well thought out design (just the right thickness of foam and air mattress) and market it and manufacture it well enough that you can easily buy it most anywhere without worrying about the quality.
A big selling point are the two straps that keep two (or more) pads tightly together in roughly the same dimensions as a queen sized bed as well as straps to hold it together rolled (both of which the LuxuryCamp pad lacks, which I purchased for my kids). This pad is easily twice as bulky as the LuxuryCamp pads (the next step down in the ThermaRest line).
For this level of portable sleeping comfort, you do not have many options unless you decide to spend the time to build your own, or bring along a bulkier mattress (and even those can easily run you over $100 if they are well made).
Like floating on a cloud. By AV5A6X2XH8YL6 on 2007-03-17
I use the mattress on a Camp Time roll-a-cot which is the best cot around because it doesn't have end bars. This mattress makes the whole setup like floating on a cloud. I think I'll spend most of my time while camping in bed instead of fishing!! It rolls up pretty big though. The straps work well to make a good bedroll. I bought som 30 inch duffels to use as a storage sack for extra protection.
Very comfortable pad. By ANUNXRU5FRTAV on 2007-11-29
I used this 1/2 season for car camping (with a cot). It was just like sleeping in my own bed. When I took apart the pad to wash the cover I noticed that one of the components is a high quality self inflating pad. Although I haven't done it yet I'm sure that this can be used standalone as a back packing pad. Its wider than most pack pads but I think it would still be OK. As you notice this is quite expensive for a sleeping pad, but if you insist on a good night's sleep its worth every penny. I only have one. My wife and I fight over it, so I'm ordering another.
- XL SIZE IS A WINNER!
     By AXKGMFZECNHO8 on 2007-05-09
Here's the deal. I finally figured out what was going on with me. As I get older, the sleeping pads I use are getting bigger and bigger. That's OK.. The thing I LOVE about this one is that the XL size is actually extra WIDE!!!! I absolutely HATE when my arms drop to my sides with standard air mats. I have had 4 different sizes over the years and this one is BY FAR my favorite. Yes, it is soft and warm and thick, but the WIDTH is the best part by far. (I am 5' 11'' and 187 lbs with a 43 inch chest). If you are of similar dimentions I would strongly suggest the XL size! UPDATE: as of July 07' I have found a new use for this XL mattress. The bunks we have at the Fire station are pretty much shot, 10 year old prison mattresses (they probably get better ones), anyhow, I have been bringing this whenever I work a night shift, and man does it help me get comfortable if I can manage a break long enough to get some shut eye. Now it is even more then justified it's cost!
- Your Guests Won't Mind Sleeping On The Floor
     By A1LVEPRENTHRSH on 2007-08-20
The mattress accomodates a large male 6'2" tall.
It is comfortable and easy to clean.
It stores nicely in a small closet.
- FANTASTIC MAT, NOT SMALL BUT VERY COMFORTABLE
     By AKDEJJT2RX73P on 2008-07-24
My wife and I are mid 40's and were concerned that we would find sleeping on ground very uncomfortable, but this mat is a winner. It is bulky, not practicle if you are thinking of carrying it on your back for example, but if you have space in a car/caravan, then we recommend it without reservation. It has an air mattress in it, which makes it comfy and it self inflates. It is large enough width wise not to worry about rolling off it at night. A great product.
- Terrific!
     By A30AXDYNVRS2LZ on 2008-09-06
A therm-a-rest with a cusion inside a heavy cover. Even better than my old therm-a-rest!!
- Very comfortable.
     By A3OJES5VF7JNYE on 2008-10-13
I've used this Mattress for number of days now. It is very comfortable.
I use it instead of much thicker inflatable bed. I've found them to have pressure spots, but this mattress from Therm-a-rest, though much thinner, does not have pressure spots.
Cons: #1 The price. #2 The mattress tends to slip on hardwood floors.
