SPECTEC SDIO Wireless LAN Networking Card WLAN 802.11b, Internet Connection for PDAs, Notebooks and PCsx$28.85

(29 reviews)

Best Price: $28.85

Spectec SDW-820 is the world's smallest SD WIFI card (802.11b) compatible with today most popular PDA models: iMate, iPAQ, Dell, etc. The card's sleek and compact design is less than half the size of today standard SD wireless cards, while outperforming its competitors in stability, speed, range, reception strength and more. Are you sick of how far your SD WiFi card sticks out of your PDA? Not only does it look tacky, it makes it pretty easy to accidentally break. The Spectec SDW-820 is your solution for connecting to the web anytime and anywhere! We dare you to compare the SDW-820's performance characteristics against similar cards from Sandisk! You will not find a better product!

  • Great card for PDAs

    By AKRDNXSU9AJMC on 2006-01-17
I recently purchased this card and was a little concerned as my PDA was not on the list of compatible devices. (Viewsonic V36) I had read some reviews on other sites that basically gave me the impression that it either worked or didn't. Fortunately for me I just plugged it in the slot, installed the driver via Active Sync and was ready to go.

I have had no problems over the first week of use. I am running PPC 2003 and everything works perfectly. The only thing that I wish they included were some programs for using it. But there are plenty of apps available on the net.

Signal strength has been good everywhere that I have used it although I haven't really had a chance to check to see what the range is. Most reviewers have stated 70 feet which seems pretty fair to me. In my home I have two walls between my front room and the access point and transmission was always in the 70-80% range at about 30 feet. Up at the office I have picked up an access point on the floor above me. So I can't fault performance in that area.

Battery usage is fair, I can get about 1 1/2 hours with constant use on a full charge. That is compared to about 2 1/2 without it. But when I am using the card I tend to run a few more apps at the same time so that may account for the reduction in battery life.

Overall an excellent product. I does not ship for the US but is shipped from Taiwan. Again, not a problem. I had mine within two weeks and that includes a holiday. If you are looking for a wireless card for your pda this will definitely fill the bill. Make sure that you do meet all of the OS requirements and that your slot is SDIO not just SD.

  • SPECTEC SDIO

    By AVDUTZ0V5QHUQ on 2007-04-12
I paid over $100 for a San Disk SD card for my iPaq 2200, and it NEVER worked right. This card was $35, and worked great from first plug-in. Faster, too.

  • Works better than EVDO for PALM TREO 700 WX

    By A7AW0WJO5OQJA on 2007-07-16
The Spectec SDIO card is simply superb. I have sprint palm treo 700wx, and i had used their data plan for $25/month...I always thought that this is too much, so I bought this WIFI card for the first time for $33 (with shipping).. from BUYGPSNOW.. they sell the cheapest and the best card out there...
I got the installation cd..provided by the seller, i installed it, and i was good to go. The battery usage is the same as if I had used the EVDO technology from sprint.. I believe SPECTEC consumes the least energy, is the most reliable, cheapest WIFI card... and yeah.. also the smallest.. just a little bit longer than my sandisk sd memory card...

    By A3QXMOMWQ6KRGJ on 2007-03-20
i have a mio a701 with win mobile5, works like a charm, easily installed, picks up the signal pretty well. of course, given the size of the internal antenna it's not as powerful as a laptop wifi card but hey it's to be expected. overall it's a good working card, the only negative part about it i found was - it sticks out a bit but then again all of them do and this one does the least

  • Item does NOT work on Dell Axim X5

    By A1U76WCWU57320 on 2007-11-03
I recently obtained a Dell Axim X5 PDA and was informed that this wifi card is compatible. When I installed the driver, I received an error message saying my unit (Dell Axim X5) is not compatible.

  • WiFi CARD FOR PDA.
    By A3EKOVW7G8ZNUE on 2007-06-26
Easy to install & allowed me to surf the Internet with my PDA. I have a Garmin GPS iQUE M5. No problems encountered.

  • Good!
    By A1XO9SXHLDJP02 on 2007-06-30
I bought it for my Navman PiN 570 GPS/PDA.

    pros:
    - If you know how to setup wireless connection for your laptop computer, the installation for this SDIO device should be easy.
    - The price at this time is the lowest among similar products.

    cons:
    none so far

  • Works like a charm
    By A20ZOIIWZU6G6H on 2008-04-08
Got this for the Palm Treo 700w and it works fine. There was a small learning curve on how to use it but it works great now!

  • poor customer support
    By A8X8Y5M0GT3UP on 2008-04-11
Item worked for around one month then died. I paid s&h to send it back expecting a replacement OR REPAIR. they sent me back the same defective dead unit and after multiple emails (they kept asking technical questions in broken written English) they refused to replace it for a new one while it was still under "warranty".
    DO NOT BUY THIS ITEM

  • Product was faulty... still got charged a restocking fee
    By A30HRD5AV8VLV1 on 2007-06-26
BuyGPSNow sent me the SD wifi card which made my IPAQ 6515hw start rebooting every minute when I installed it. It had never done this in the past and it would stop the moment I take the card out. I returned the card on time and they still charged me 15% restocking fee because they claimed they did not see anything wrong with the card. This card cost me almost $40 and they credited me only $30... basically I lost $10 doing business with them. Save your money and don't buy from them... try from other resellers.

  • Spectec Wireless Card Disaster
    By A21MERTXIL3U3G on 2007-07-08
I recently purchased the SDIO Wireless card. This card is worse than useless, it crashed my PDA. I was never able to get the card working. The online sales blurb and the documentation clearly indicated that my PDA was on the list of supported equipment. The documentation sucks (it is non-existent).
I will not purchase any more Sectec products.
I do not recommend this product.

  • Did not work with hp ipaq 2215
    By A184HUD1LVA2U9 on 2008-03-20
The card does not work with my device. It doesn't even show up.
    Don't buy!

  • It works
    By A1QBATAURJA7O8 on 2008-03-22
I have had this card in my PDA now for about two weeks. Installation was straight forward and card does work as advertised. I am using is with an IPAQ 1940 running v4.2 of pocket PC.

    The Good:
    -installation was simple
    -card recognized with no problem
-it has expected range for something so small - and in general I think the range is very good
-works everywhere I have tried - my home network, public hotspots, etc.

    The Not So Good:
-using activesync can be hit and miss - sometimes when I plug in it works and sometimes I need to eject the WAN card and reboot the IPAQ - I can't say I have spent too much time getting to the bottom of this and the workaround is not too much trouble
-I do find myself resetting the IPAQ more often then before the card, but this is not because the system has crashed but because it has stopped recognizing the WAN card - again, I have not spent much time troubleshooting this and I do not find it that much of a problem, just a little inconvenient

My final thoughts on this are that it works great, it's not perfect, but I paid about $20 for it and it was way cheaper than buying a new IPAQ with built in wireless networking.

  • Good Stuff, some flaws
    By A3LN65SAT7WHK3 on 2008-03-23
The card works fine on my i-mate Jam, but I wont give 5 stars due to:
    - If you leave the radio ON, it will drain your battery in a few hours
    - Software hangs up from time to time. Windows reset required.
    - Signal is not strong as I would like.

price/benefit is good, I recommend the item.

  • Works Great on PDA

  • Works great with Garmin IQue M3
    By A17VJE3XNE62PJ on 2007-07-19
Bought this to expand my M3 to wireless. It works great. Gets better reception than my Laptop with built in wireless. Barely sticks out the top of my M3 when it's installed. Very nice and great price.

  • SPECTEC SDIO wifi card for NAVMAN pin 570 Windows 2003 pocket pc
    By A1X2VQJM57QSOL on 2007-09-20
I bought this SPECTEC SDIO wifi card for my NAVMAN pin 570 Windows 2003 pocket pc/GPS and it works great. It connects to Internet within 5 to 6 seconds of switching on the device and has good download speed. I browse, check mails (Yahoo, GMail, Passport etc.,) Google search, news etc., same as how I do with my PC and Laptop.

  • Good, convenient wifi.
    By A3IGYUVI3PMAE2 on 2007-11-12
Great card, the size is perfect since it does not go over the antenna. The signal range is not very good though.

  • A great product!
    By A1AQ6AT45NWLGW on 2007-12-27
I purchased the card for my wife and she loves it. It was easy to setup and works better than I had expected. When we originally purchased our PDA we didn't have wireless internet in the house. Once we did get wireless internet we wished we had bought a PDA with wireless capabilities. This product made it easy to get what we wanted out of our existing PDA without having to purchase a new one.

  • Works quite well with HP iPAQ rz-1715
    By A2CRQZONQZ89WK on 2008-02-12
While I have only had this for a few hours, I am very pleased with this product. It only took about five minutes to install the software, and perhaps 10 minutes to connect it to both of my wireless networks. I did have a little problem with entering a manual 128 bit WEP key, as the entry box would "time out" before I had a chance to enter all of the characters. Entering the key manually in the connection setup solved this problem in short order.

I ordered the SDW-820 over the faster SDW-821 for a couple of reasons. The iPAQ rz-1715 is not the fastest hand-held PC, and my Internet connection is far slower than 802.11b, so going any faster is really not worth it. I suppose if I wanted to stream video on my local LAN the '821 might have been worth it, but who does that with an iPAQ rz-1715?

I am VERY pleased with the delivery time. It was ordered on Thursday and arrived on Monday. This is stellar service in my book! I will not hesitate to use buyGPSnow.com in the future.

  • Great SDIO wireless card.
    By A3SYPUL4J9WYKC on 2008-02-25
I bought this card for my NAVMAN Mio 168 PDA with built in GPS. The documentation is a little lacking, but the software installed without a hitch. After installing the software, I pluggged in the card and it found my wireless network. I entered my WEP code and was connected. That simple! It is the slower "b" standard, but the price is right. It is also very small. It sticks out less that 1/4 inch so I don't have to worry about it getting in the way. Surfing the net is a little difficult on the PDA because of the small screen, but it is gerat for e-mail. I can now check my e-mail anywhere there is a wifi hot-spot. I would recommend this product.

  • Good for the first week
    By A3EKSL3Z3M3J8S on 2008-03-01
I purchased this for my pocket pc a week ago and it worked great... Signal strength etc.
Then when I turned it on yesterday it totally crashed. Literally this thing is dreaded for PDAs. you have to soft reset it every time. A MUST AVOID. I would give this negative 5 stars.
Now I have to buy a new pocket pc cause Im out of warranty. rrrrrrrrrrrr

  • great buy
    By A1E67HYX1ZHPLJ on 2008-03-19
the product works fine, it has trouble connecting sometimes. I dont really understand how come i can connect with certain networks that dont have real internet access.

nevertheless when i pick up a good wifi network that i have access to via bluesocket, it works like a charm.

excellent alternative to EVDO as long as u have accessible wifi
