Just like Heroscape: Modular and flexible By A3ERV1420MTP1Q on 2006-07-25
The new Castle/Wall Packs look to be the usual for Heroscape: flexible and modular. The Hasbro convention display set up at ComicCon (July 06) was astounding. There was a huge castle on display made from six of these "Fortress of the Archkyrie" Castle Packs. Just like a Lego set, you can buy as much or as little as you want to build the size of fortress(es) you desire. For $28 you get 141 pieces in a basic Castle and Wall Pack:
* 7 Straight (wall-to-wall) Bases (single hex size)
* 10 Corner Bases (single hex size)
* 4 End-of-Wall Bases (single hex size)
* 7 Straight Wall sections (attach atop bases, 9 levels tall, single hex width)
* 10 Corner Wall sections (attach atop bases, 9 levels tall, single hex width)
* 4 End Wall sections (attach atop bases, 9 levels tall, single hex width)
* 21 single-space Wall Walks (attach atop wall sections). All wall walk spaces grant +3 movement bonuses just like the road terrain from the Return to the Forgotten Forest road/trees expansion pack.)
* 1 nine-space Wall Walk (attaches atop wall sections or hangs out over wall sections)
* 1 seven-space Wall Walk (goes atop wall sections or hangs out over them)
* 50 Battlements (each is one "facet/side" of a hex in width, 2 levels tall. Attach to wall walks or any game hex terrain). Movement over them or shooting from behind them works just like the bridge walls from the Road to the Forgotten Forest expansion pack.
* 1 opening/closing massive Fortress Doorway. 3 hexes wide and 10 levels tall.
* 1 Fortress Door. Has special opening/closing rules and has its own defense for sieges against it. If it is destroyed it easily removes from play so armies can flood the castle.
* 1 flag (Jandar design)
* 1 Fortress Door card. (Has the special defense stats for whichever player controls the door)
* 1 sliding bar for door. Keeps the door closed from intruders.
* 22 single-rung Ladder pieces. Each is one "facet/side" of a hex in width. 2 levels tall. Each rung take one movement point to climb, rather than the two movement points regular terrain would cost to climb. Figures can end their movement on a ladder as the design will hold them in place. Make the ladders as tall or as many as you want. Other special movement and fighting rules for the ladders are in the Rulebook.
This looks to be a good value for the money and will be highly desired addition to a Heroscape terrain/battlefield collection. Decoration is a little plain but this should allow it to blend with many types of creations for various kinds of armies.
Another Great addition By A2W3JMA1P62IXL on 2006-08-24
This is another great addition to the heroscape line and it brings some ingenious technology with it. The wall pieces are kind of like giant hex pieces which you can slide together just like the original hex pieces to make castle walls. They stack side to side and on top of each other allowing for larger walls.
You can also attach ladders to the sides of these pieces to allow access to the top of them.
The set comes with several road pieces that have a special bottom allowing them to be attached to the top of the wall pieces making a roof on the walls for units to stand on. With some smaller pieces that can be attached to the sides of these roofs making castle battlements.
The castle door comes with a card and special rules for damaging it and a flag piece is included in case you want to create some capture the flag scenarios.
My only concerns with this product is that there really are some smaller pieces than the other heroscape sets so be careful with young kids and this set. Finally, the tops of the wall pieces latch to each other and over time may become weakened or break off. I'm hoping not as this set is going to add a new dimension to heroscape fun!
Outside of those minor concerns this is a must for the heroscape fan and I'm eager to try these new sets out which I just got from Amazon yesterday!
Some assembly required... and a "safe" set to give as a gift By A2RC9W12WGIG2P on 2006-10-20
Serious cool points for this customizable expansion set. These ain't no Playskool pieces. Each *single* hex requires one or two wall sections, a base, a walk tile, and at least two battlement pieces. Assembly is definitely more difficult than Legos, and there's always a concern that one of the snap-together pieces will snap off. Small children and impatient adults won't like putting it together, and the castle is probably better stored as a cool diorama, rather than disassembled back into the box. The cover on the box may be misleading. With the set's 21 single-wall sections and 3-piece doorway I was able to make a one-level 5x7 hex castle, with a few spare wall sections. That's not small, but hardly the castle implied on the box cover. I haven't played the castle set -- but I'm having plenty of fun putting this piece-happy monstrosity together.
I should mention that, if you're shopping for a gift for a HeroScape addict who already has a few expansion sets, this is the "safest" set to give. Even if you give a castle set to someone who already owns one, it will be a very welcome gift. Unlike other sets, multiple castle sets work *very* well together, and help your local HeroScape player build his dream castle. I'm definitely going to buy another set -- or two -- if it goes on sale!
Definitely a "must-have" addition to Heroscape By A3OF0JR7CD0L5S on 2007-03-08
I bought two of these sets so my son and I could setup castles on opposing sides of our Heroscape battlefield. I was VERY pleased with the quantity, quality and assortment of castle wall pieces.
There was plenty of wall in each set (we did buy 2) for my son and I to each build our own large castles. My son went with his own single tower design and I had a more conventional 2 tower layout. The resulting castle constructions are very solid. Nothing to worry about in the realm of gameplay. You won't have to worry about pieces falling off of these things. Very well designed interlocking system that conforms perfectly to the existing hex land pieces.
The walls equate to about 10 or 11 height in the game and allows you to explore some of the lesser-used advanced game tactics, such as extra attack/defense bonuses for being more than 10 higher than an opponent, falling, moats can be employed to allow characters to jump from the walls without injury, flying characters can gain huge height advantages very quickly! These new elements have certainly made our battles more interesting.
My only gripe (and it's a relatively unimportant one) was that the set included only one type of army flag for the castle (Jandar). I would have preferred they provided a blank flag plastic piece along with a sticker sheet so you can choose which army will be occupying the fortress. I bought two castle sets so now I have two Jandar flags; I guess I'll just have to photoshop some new flag stickers myself.
So far, the only seige engine you have against this type of obstruction is a flying character. Otherwise you can only pound on the front door and with a life of 10, not only does it take a lot of punishment before giving way, you character takes a pounding from defenders on the wall and towers with nice height advantage attack bonuses. The walls themselves are (at least in current rule sets) indestructable. Will be interesting to see if seige devices and/or opposing army fortresses are in the works. A catapult or some specialized wall climber characters would be nice.
If you're contemplating getting the Heroscape game for a child keep the following in mind:
1. No doubt, half the fun of this game is building the battlefield. It can take awhile and is great for an imaginative child or adult who likes to build with Lego or other such blocks. If you don't see yourself or your child enjoying a half-day worth of designing and building your battlefield layout, this game may not be for you.
2. There are two instruction sets; basic and advanced. I can play the advanced rule set with my son who is 8, but only because I carefully monitor his moves and help him along and make suggestions. Gradually he's picking up on the finer points, but it is a moderately complex rule set that an adult will have to assist children under 10. Most 8-10 year olds would have no problem playing using the basic rule set on their own.
3. Adults who enjoy wargaming will no doubt also like this game. The advanced rule set is deep enough to allow for complex strategies.
best set By on 2006-11-19
This set is so cool. i got it for my birthday. this set lets you build a door that is hard for the enamy to get past. and all the walls and things let you build really cool fortresses. buy this set.
- love it
     By A38EHG5EV1H1ZJ on 2006-09-06
My son ordered this with his birthday money, and has been eagerly awaiting it's arrival. It is incredible. It looks awesome and was fairly easy to put together. My only concern was the base pieces and how they fit at the base of the wall. It was very tight and it may get worn over time. Also, I wish they had more map/scenarios in the book, it only comes with one map. Other than that, my son loves it and my husband even said it was a great addition to the game.

I can't wait until this comes out! It's suposed to have over 100 pieces and 4 ladders and a door!I think that it would be fun to get at least 2 so that you could build a bigger fortressbecause even though there is over 100 pieces,it's not all that big as you might think it is.But,besides it's size,it should be great!

- Awesome set
     By on 2007-01-23
This is an awesome expansion set. You really get a lot for your money with this set. It is one of the best values of the entire Heroscape series. There are so many things you can do with this set and different ways to use it.
- A good addition
     By A1OOA07AEKV6FG on 2007-02-28
This is a very nice addition to the base Heroscape set. My son built a board using the wall and we played three or four very basic scenarios using the same layout (swapping players in and out) over a 6 hour period. There are rules for taking control of or destroying the main door and there are ladders inside the fortress for climbing, which work suprisingly well with the figures. I was very impressed.
- Castle is a very good addition to the Master Set
     By A2R4BCKU45XSIB on 2008-02-18
The castle is an excellent addition to any Heroscape Master Set. If you get this though, I would recommend you have at least two Master Sets as it's harder to play with it if there's not very much land outside of it.
- Great expansions for a GREAT game!
     By A2HN146UGU9S8N on 2007-05-12
Heroscape is such a great game for it's simplicity, replayability, and originality. I play this every opportunity I get. The Castle Walls and Frozen Tundra expansions for the game are awesome and add so much more dimension to the base game and the overall look of the playing field. The total experience of playing Heroscape is just plain fun! I highly recommend this to anyone who enjoys a good 'battle' game. Simple enough to play with your kids, while also providing the tactical and strategic complexity to satisfy deep-thinking adult gamers.
- The best heroscape toy so far
     By A3D7ZB2NWE93T9 on 2007-05-13
Heroscape is a great strategy and fantasy game. In this great expansion, you can use towers and walls to create castles (and walls). I think this is the best heroscape set so far and can't wait to see what else they'll come out with in the near future.
- Great addition, decent condition
     By A2VT6G7DJ1KNQS on 2007-05-14
Overall this set is a VERY GOOD addition to any heroscape collection. The only qualms I have are in relation to the difficulty of assembling of some components. The re-playability of this set is very high. Since I have had these sets (4 to be exact) it has added a whole new avenue of play that has added GREAT flavor to the battlefield. On a scale of 1 - 10 I would rate it a solid 9. The only reason it's not a 10 is cause of the slight difficulties with assembly.
- Great modular expansion
     By A2RIAXGSBP65BJ on 2007-09-14
This has the excellent versatility of the master set. You can build the castle shown, or just build several smaller walls, or use the wall tops to make roads. One caveat is that it can be difficult to assemble and more so to take apart. If you plan to buy it for someone on the lower end of the age range, be prepared to help get the pieces to snap in place.
I also need to point out that the door is just cool.
