LeapFrog Leapster Learning Game System - Pinkx$48.99
    (116 reviews)
Best Price: $79.99 $48.99
The Leapster Handheld Learning System teaches your child by playing with them! Play and learn essential pre-K through 2nd grade skills, with one interactive system. Children will educate themselves through action-packed learning games for reading, math, critical and creative thinking, story comprehension, vocabulary, and much more! Backlit screen for easy viewing Headphone jack for quiet play. The Leapster software library features games for pre-K through 4th grade. What it Teaches: - For ages 4-7 Here is one handheld gaming system that both parents and kids will be able to agree upon. The Leapster Learning Game System takes the brain-building principles that Leapfrog laid out in its early electronic learning devices (which have an interactive book format) and applies them to a video-game format. Leapster draws kids in with familiar video game templates—all of which have a secret weapon: a built-in learning component. LeapFrog hopes that kids will become so engaged in the gaming aspects and familiar television and movie characters offered by this toy that they won’t even notice they’re learning and reinforcing valuable reading, math, and language skills. | | With the Leapster Learning System children can play games, read books, create art, and watch videos. | Aimed at kids ages 4 to 10 years, the 6-by-4-inch Leapster is sized for little hands and comfortably shaped with safe, rounded edges. The 2.25-inch touch screen is ample for most of the gaming activities; although a little cluttered when used for the art and drawing modules. Buttons are suitably placed on either side of the unit for thumb-operated control. The right side features "A" and "B" buttons for selecting settings and answers, while the left has a multi-directional gamepad for game play. A stylus is also attached for drawing, selecting tools and settings, and dragging and placing objects. The 3-inch backlit display makes games visible in the dark (although parents will prefer that the Leapster is shut off at bedtime) and the animated graphics, while not completely state-of-the-art, are well done and suitable for this age range. As with the manufacturer’s LeapPad products, the Leapster does require the purchase of additional cartridges to expand its capabilities. Kids can choose from a star-studded list of their favorite characters to play educational games with, such as SpongeBob SquarePants, Thomas the Tank Engine, Dora the Explorer, Nemo, Cinderella, Batman, and more. Leapfrog’s own cartoon star, Tad, narrates a few as well. While stocking up on the extra software titles can get expensive, it gives parents some control and input on which characters they’d like their kids to learn from. Plus, characters for these titles are appropriately matched to the maturity of the targeted grade level (pre-K through 4th grade). | | This handheld system is a perfect fit for small hands and easily portable. | Starting up or hitting the Home button takes players to the main menu. There is one pre-loaded game that children will likely come back to again and again. Rabbit River is based on the Frogger game format but with an additional learning element. In letters mode, kids guide their bunny to hop floating logs to the other side of the river while jumping on specific letters to identify them or spell out a requested 3- or 4-letter word. In numbers mode, the bunny must land on specific numbers on the logs to skip count by twos or form a correct equation. Another pre-loaded activity is Color Corral, an interactive coloring book designed to boost creative problem-solving skills. This module is like a kid’s version of Photoshop and offers a variety of scenic templates, colors, tools, and moving icons that kids can combine for an infinite number of possibilities. The included manual gives suggestions on how to reinforce these math, reading, and art concepts in the real world. Each game offers multiple skill levels so kids can ease into new territory at the beginner level, then challenge themselves with more advanced learning problems as they understand the concept. If kids are stumped at any point during a game, they can hit the Hint button and receive a friendly push in the right direction from an animated tutor, Edison the firefly. Edison also appears automatically if kids answer a question incorrectly several times in a row and coaches the child to reach the correct answer. The Pause button lets kids stop the game for a snack break and pick back up again where they left off. Designed for portability, the Leapster fits easily in a backpack or tote bag and is ideal for more purposeful edutainment on the go, whether a quick game on the bus to school or hours of playtime during vacation travel. This learning system runs on four AA batteries or on a rechargeable battery pack when combined with the Leapster L-Max Recharging System (sold separately).

Finally an educational gaming system! By A3JY22JKS8Q18R on 2005-12-02
Some of the other reviewer didn't like the new smaller screen, but it didn't seem to bother my child & I liked it because I could use screen protectors meant for the PSP (you just have to trim some of the length)to save the screen from smudges and scratches.
If you are trying to decide between this and the L-Max, I'd save your money for extra games and buy the Leapster - all the L-max games work perfectly fine on the regular leapster and the tv functions of the L-max really aren't all that great (it's strength is still as a hand-held system). And it your leapster is the new sleeker model the battery pack in the back takes the l-max charger not the leapster charger.
If you are trying to decide between this and v-smile, get the Leapster - the v-smile seems tempting because the games are cheaper, but their software isn't very original, it's educational, but the different titles just seem to repeat -as if they pasted the different characters into the same game senarios. The leapster games are alot richer (for example in the spongebob game when the user has to count coins if they don't have the correct amount they can hit a button to "make change" from a larger coin, v-smile games don't give you that kind of flexibility in the game play) and they feel more like games (the sidescrolling worlds in Numbers on the Loose has zero jumping and rolling and bouncing that is enough like nintendo type games to let them feel they are playing and not just learning) & the tutorials/helps are very good at explaining what the user needs to do to complete the task.
When we first bought our Leapster we took it out of the box carefully and tested it when our child wasn't around so we could take it back if we didn't like it - but we were pleasantly pleased & if you are looking for educational gaming that will grow with your kids (or can go with your kids, if you are out and about much) you'll love this too. If you buy this be sure to invest in a charger or simply some rechargeable AA batteries and a quick charger (a cheaper option if you aren't going to use the ac adapter that comes in the charging kit). My only other comment,an probably biggest complaint would be to watch out for the built in software that comes on the new sleeker Leapsters - it comes with an advertising commercial to introduce your child to all the wonderful titles available that they may not know about -and it's built in, you can't get rid of it! Very annoying leapster! Very annoying!
Nice design, but too small! By A1598AU4Q045PB on 2005-11-19
The new pink/purple leapster has a nicer design than the old version. I like the new pen holder on the front. The arrow dial on the left side is better than the older (round)version, too. HOWEVER, we are exchanging it for the older version. The reason: THE SCREEN! The new leapster's screen measures only 5.4 cm - the old version screen measures 7 cm. Also, the pen on the new leapster is smaller. Customer service said everything on the new design is smaller "to accomodate smaller hands"...that's nice, but it also requires better fine motor skills - which smaller hands do not necessarily have. For those of you who purchase this and are considering the recharging kit - I was told that this design needs the L-max recharger.
I own both the Leapster and the L-Max By A3FUMBQUF0BPD6 on 2006-05-12
I have two of these, one Leapster and one L-max that I got for my twins for their 4th Birthday a few days ago.
I let them play with their games for the entire day on their birthday, without restriction...all with a plan in mind...
The PROS:
Once the kids found out how much fun the games are and how easy it is to learn while playing, they won't put them down...you may not feel like this is a 'pro' except that now, I make them earn time on the games. They get 10 minutes for putting their toys away; 10 minutes for making their beds; 10 minutes for helping with laundry, etc...up to 1 hour of play a day...I HAVE NEVER HAD SO MUCH HELP AROUND THE HOUSE! As Dr. Phil says, "Find their currancy". Well, I have found it. They are doing what I ask, when I ask...if they don't, time gets taken away. I wish I had thought of this while they were potty training! This is working much better than the 'marbles' for allowance system...they have no concept of money yet. Great toy with lots of variations and levels of play. Good Job LEAPFROG!
THE CONS:
I went through 4 sets of batteries (for the entire day) before I sped out the door for a rechargable battery system. I'm going back again today for another recharging system. I've called Leapfrog and they said that the battery packs, themselves, cost as much as the entire recharging kit, so they do not offer additional battery packs for purchase. You can play with just the AC Adapter that comes with the recharging system, but that has been a pain so far, since one Leapster has a battery pack and the other has to be played off the AC Adapter, and then plugged back in to the recharging unit at night to recharge the L-max. I have forgotten to plug it back in a few times and had problems explaining that Mommy's memory is fading and that they will have to wait to play again until the batteries are recharged.
Overall, I love the product. I haven't had any problems so far, but the units are only a week old. We will have to see. I just love how orderly my house is now that I have found a way to tempt them into picking up their toys. And the tantrums are down as well. If they start screaming over anything, they lose time...my house has NEVER been so quiet since the day they were born! YEE HA!
UPDATE 7/23/2008
Both the leapster and the Lmax are still going strong, however the units are looking very, very worn, scratched and beaten because they are loved. We have an immense library of cartridges...19 at last count....everyone very unique, educational and entertaining. It's been about 2 1/2 to 3 years now and the rechargable battery packs are finally giving out. They just don't hold the charge like they used to. I have also bought the new Didj (see that review) and am never disappointed by Leapfrog.
Just returned this and bought the older version. By ALSM01OU6WJD0 on 2005-11-27
I was so disappointed when I go this Leapster home from the store. I bought it for my 5 y.o. after she had played with her cousin's older version. When I got the new one home I was frustrated to see that not only is the screen quite a bit smaller, but there are only two games on the new version! The older one has a chicken matching game and shape game that are not on this new version. The new one only comes with the coloring game and rabbit river game, and one really tacky game icon that advertises all the other games available for the leapster. Luckily, I was still able to buy the older version at the store.
Beware what accessories you buy!!!! By ACTJYHMDLWABT on 2005-12-27
The pink leapster is great; however, when you put this item in your shopping cart (no matter what retailer you use), you get the recommendation to also buy the leapster recharging system and small blue leapster carrying case. I did so and got burned since neither of those fit. Even leapfrog.com recommends those items for the pink leapster. Problem: my daughter ripped everything open, packinging was tossed, and how do I return to the place from which I purchased them? Called leapfrog and they took a lot of time to determine that , yes, I was correct that those products don't fit despite their recommending them. Conclusion: I'm going to have to negotiate with my retailer to return products for which there is no packaging. I'd rather have a root canal than travel to a store this time of year. None of the retailers, including leapfrog.com, mentioned that you need to use the pink backpack and the leapster l-max recharging system for the pink (and I imagine the other colored systems) leapster. I've heard they are great at support, but they won't swap items with me because I am changing products (even though the cost is the same). Leaves a bad taste in my mouth.
- Wonderful!!!
     By A136BDAYQZCV9E on 2006-11-17
Both of my daughters received Leapsters from Santa last year. My older one wanted a red one and my younger a pink one. The red one was an L-Max and this was the only pink one. I believe they now have a pink L-Max, but in my opinion spending the extra money on the L-Max isn't worth it. The only difference is you can hook it up to the tv, which we've never done because the whole fun of the Leapster for my girls is that they can take it anywhere. I was worried that the L-Max games wouldn't work on the "plain" Leapster, but that is not the case. All of the games are interchangable. However, you can't play a non-L-Max game on the tv, which again, doesn't matter to us anyway.
Also, I wouldn't bother buying the recharging station. We just use rechargable batteries and they work just fine.
- Let the Buyer beware!!

We bought the pink Leapster this year for our 4 1/2 year-old daughter and a green Leapster for our 3 1/2 year-old son for Christmas to replace their original blue and silver Leapsters which had been "loved" and "dropped" to the point of exhaustion. Having had the "original" Leapsters for over a year, my children acquired quite a few Leapster accessories... multiple game titles, rechargeable Leapster battery packs and charging docks to name just a few.
Not wanting to start from scratch, but wanting to purchase their new Leapsters in different colors, I contacted LeapFrog Industries directly (the manufacturer of the ever-popular Leapster and Leappad products) to determine if their existing accessories and game titles would be compatible with the newly colored Leapsters. I spoke to a representative in technical support who assured me that our existing accessories would all be compatible with the new Leapster. He claimed that all of the game cartridges and accessories for the Leapster and Leapster L-Max were completely interchangeable, and we would not have any problem.
After speaking with the representative, I ordered the new colored Leapsters online. My children opened their new Leapsters with delight on Christmas morning... that delight quickly turned into tears as we fruitlessly tried to install the Leapster battery into the new Leapsters. The old battery itself is actually bigger than the new Leapster... not even close to being the correct size, shape or dimensions.
After frantically racing to a local store yesterday to purchase two new charging systems (at a cost of $80), I contacted LeapFrog again. While they do admit to seeing notes from my prior call in the system, they claim that there is nothing they can do to assist us. The only advice offered was to return the two new Leapsters to the store, or to purchase the required L-Max accessories for this product.
When our children did finally have the opportunity to play with their new Leapsters, our disappointment in this new product deepened. It seems that two of the internal games that our children loved from the original Leapster have been "deleted" from this new version and replaced by a built-in Leapster software commercial.
The Leapster is a well-loved toy in our home, rich with benefits for both of our preschool-aged children. Don't let our bad experience sway your decision to purchase this product, just learn from our unfortunate experience and choose your accessories carefully. I would also recommend making your purchase through a retailer with a liberal and understanding return policy, such as Amazon.
- Fun AND Educational!!
     By A2S0RUCXJHHO43 on 2006-01-09
My daughter wanted a Leapster for Christmas. I wasn't sure which was the newer model, the triangular one or the smaller, rectangular one. So, I bought both to try them out. Screen size was also an issue for me. I thought the larger screen would be better. But, believe me, the newer version (small, retangular) Leapster's screen is sooo much clearer, crisper, and the colors are more vivid! My 4 year old daughter has no problem manipulating the buttons or the pen and SHE loves it! She plays it all the time. Now, my 7yo son, who has a GB Adv. SP wants one, too!
- A sweet investment
     By A64HEFSU9BMDW on 2006-02-28
My daughter started out with the LeapPad, and my 3 year old son has the Little Touch LeapPad, My first LeapPad with desk, and the original LeapPad. We never owned the "older version" of the Leapster, so I never noticed differences. However, from what I've seen of my nephew's older one, I'll keep the new one. A slightly larger screen isn't important enough to me or my 7 year old to override the more bulky, less efficiently designed older one. Aside from this Leapster being very easy for my daughter to handle, she loves that it fits in her purse, instead of having to tote around another bag, and I love that it's so easy to change the batteries, she can do it herself! Also, neither my daughter nor myself have ever noticed "commercials" on it. I highly recommend the Leapster as a fantastic educational & fun alternative to video games-which aren't allowed in our home. Even the built-in games (including an educational version of my childhood favorite, "Frogger") are very fun. My 3-year-old son sits and watches and helps my daughter answer some of the letter & number problems. In the short time that we've had it, just from watching over his sisters' shoulder, he has learned his entire alphabet and can do simple addition too! A+ for this Leapster! I only wish there were more games available for 1st through 4th grades!
- Huge Disappointment, Durability Issues
     By A29375GU2P0FHF on 2006-03-09
I purchased two leapsters for my children for Christmas. Overall the games are great. The main drawbacks are the cost of use and durability.
I bought two recharging kits to save on batteries. You must do this as regular batteries won't last long. Then there is the expense of the games, usually $25 for one game. Having said that, I still thought it was worth it for the entertainment and learning it provides my kids... until today. My daughter's leapster inexplicably stopped working today. I had registered both leapsters, but when I went to check the warranty, I found out they only had 3 month warranties. It seems they only make these things to last for three months, which is not acceptable.
I am very disappointed in this leapster. Protect yourself, and your child, and purchase learning games with a better warranty. For the amount of investment we are putting into these things, we deserve something that will last a year or more.
- Loved the original Leapster-disappointed with the new colored versions
     By A3P8UX6XNI4KKL on 2005-12-27
My 6 year old son got a silver Leapster last Christmas and loves it-so does my 3 1/2 year old daughter and a 3 1/2 year old cousin. My mother got both children Leapsters for Christmas (a pink one for my daughter and a green one for the cousin). Much to everyones dismay the new colored Leapsters come with 2 less games than the original (my daughter was so excited to get the Leapster but started crying when she realized her favorite game was not included). I wouldn't be so upset if Leapster had indicated this on the packaging or had named it Leapster2 instead of calling it the same thing-Leapster. When complaining to customer service at Leap Frog it was said that when they upgrade a product they don't make it the same-they improve it. Yeah improve it with 2 less games so you have to purchase more software (they probably found that children love the software that came on the original Leapster so much that parents weren't forced to buy lots of additional software for it). Now you can't even purchase the software that came on the original Leapster to use with the colored Leapster. Anyway, the cousin is returning his green Leapster and getting an original silver and I am debating what to do since my daughter really loves the pink color of her new leapster.
- awesome learning toy
     By A5IRXH122QR3L on 2006-02-13
I wanted to buy the older style leapster but this new style was the only one...the other one was "sold out" at every site I went to and I live overseas so I can't just go to WALMART or Target....so I bought this Pink (Rectangular) leapster for my 6 year old and she loves it!! (so do I)
I bought the older (triangle) stlye for my 4 year old son.
If you are like me I had a hard time deciding which one I should buy...the new one or the older one. I can't really say one is better then the other. They both have pros and cons.
Pros/Cons for the Rectangular style...
the back can be opened with a coin which is nice for travel. (I fly to the states a lot..14 hours is a long time)
it is a lot smaller in size and easier for little hands to play.
BUT with the smaller size comes a smaller screen. Which is the only con for me. (my daughter didn't even seem to notice)
The only Cons for me on the older style would be the pen and the back. You have to use screwdriver to open it....so while travling it can be hard to change batteries.
Which ever one you buy you and your child will love it!!!
The games are all awesome....My children really like the Kindergarten and 1st grade games, Dora and SpongeBob!!
Hope this is helpful.
- The whole family loves it!
     By A3MS4U7EKIGCN on 2006-08-25
We purchased this for our 5 yr old daughter, along with a few games. We all love it. My 2 yr old enjoys the drawing and coloring option and our 7 yr old son wants one as well. We're very pleased with this purchase.
- Buyer Beware - Older Models are Better!!!
     By A1Q2QDPJYWH1J7 on 2006-02-18
We bought our friends the older/triangular/rounded model over the holiday and they were having some basic trouble with it. The LeapFrog company suggested that she just exchange it for a new one (this model) to avoid future problems. They now have this new model and are very unhappy. The screen is about half of the original size, the new design is harder to hold on to and there are "mini" commercials for their other products when you turn on the device. They already have your money, this is supposed to be an educational toy, now marketing has taken over. We are very disappointed in this new product and urge any buyer to look for the other model.
- Great for child with ADHD
     By A3G8IZCJ4FHR3C on 2005-12-30
My husband and I got the Leapster for our 7 year old daughter and are very happy with it. She is a child who typically can't focus on any single toy for more than 2 or 3 minutes at a time. She has ADHD and normally jumps from one toy to the next. We have tried all types of toys...dolls, dress-up items, board games etc... Nothing has gotten her attention for long until now. For some reason this toy has grabbed her attention and gotten her to focus. She is understanding educational concepts that have been very hard for her to understand in school. These are the same skills that have left her in tears in the past. I am VERY impressed! This is a GREAT learning tool for our daughter and we highly reccomend it. The Leapster is well worth the money!
- 10 star rating DESERVED!!!!!!

By far this is the best money I have EVER spent on my little girl. She is only four years old and Santa got this for her for christmas. She is so good already in the week she has had it at recognition skills, adding, counting, spelling and action and reaction skills. she has mastered the kindergarten and princess games as well as the leap game that is standard with it. This is the best item leapfrog has come out with! AAAAAAAA++++++++ all the way!

I bought this for my 7 years old daughter who loves it. She loves the Math Missions learning game. We also purchased I Spy and we look forward to getting the 2nd Grade game as well. We like the fact that she is getting a lot out of it. I would much rather have her play Leapster than a Gameboy. I think It has more to offer.
- Old Leapster Best
     By A8UXBM3O1GTZZ on 2006-07-22
I have both the old and new version of the leapster. My younger daughter no longer uses her new leapster because it was difficult to hear. So we purchased her an old leapster that we found at a store. The new leapster is cute, I must say, but the sound is much lower than in the old version. I spoke with a Leapfrog representative (fabulous custormer service) and after testing it while I waited, he confirmed that the sound decibal was significantly lower. However, since it met their standards it was not technically a defect. They informed me that the old version has not been in production for quite a while and no plans were in place to bring it back. Any old version you find for sale is all that is left.
- Awesome game system!!
     By A1P354IBQL8838 on 2005-12-30
I bought this for my 7 year old for christmas and she can't put it down...she got so many other toys for christmas and this is the one that she hasn't put down since she opened it...she is one that doesn't have a very long attention span and this has kept her attention for at least 45 minutes so far..that for her is tremendous!! The games are just so educational and fun at the same time, versus the gameboy, those games have no educational value to them whatsoever!! In reading the other comments I've heard complaints about the screen being to small but my kids havn't said a word about the screen, they see it just fine and I've played it as well and I see it just fine...it's really quite fun to play with!! I would recommend this to anyone!
- Leapster Learning System
     By A34MHN86Q7QUVV on 2006-01-11
We bought this for our 5 year old for Christmas not thinking she would be real thrilled with it. Much to our surprise she LOVES it! In just a few weeks I can already see a difference in her reading and she is excited to do the different activities. It also gives us a new avenue to help her learn these skills. She doesn't become frustrated like she does when she tries to sit down with a book. She is even asking for more cartridges for it so that she can "do math and stuff." It was totally worth the investment. The charger is a must. $35 seems like a lot when you already spent $50 on the system, but it is worth every penny.
- excellent for learning

I bought this for my daughter who just turned 3 years old hoping she could play some of the games and that it would help her learn. She is learning to use it and really likes it. She is playing the Dora games and loves it. She does get frustrated after trying to play it for a while but every time she plays it she gets better and it gets easier for her.
- better than gameboy

I bought a leapster for my oldest granddaughter (7) at Christmas time. She loved it and played it non stop. Her sister (6) just had a birthday and by request bought her one as well. It was money well spent. They both love them and play them every chance they get. I highly recommend this game.
- Terrible Customer Service

My child received a Leap Frog game for Christmas that was defective and trying to exchange it has been a nighmare. The company was completely dismissive and took no responsibility for their products. Their protocal is "it is not our fault and there is nothing we can do about it." Will not buy from them again.

My 6 year old daughter just got the Leapster Learning System for Christmas yesterday and she loves it.She has not put it down since she got it. It has alot of games built into it so don't buy any extra cartridges until you see what it already has. I bought her 2 cartridges that it already has on it.

I bought this for my 4 year old daughter, it was the best toy ever! She also got the amazing amanda doll that was such a "hot toy" this year and the leapster beat it by far! She has NOT put it down, everything about it seems to be great for her, and unlike other learning toys she understands it and is learning very fast with it. The software she loves! I t keeps her interested even on very long car rides, to her we are there before she knows it.

My daugher was a preemie and has some coordination issues, etc. and she handles it great! It is just the right size. You can take it anywhere! It will grow with her and she is learning hand/eye coordination and all sorts of educational games! I'm just now replacing the batteries (3 months old). I will definately buy a charger. I also love that you can buy the new I-max games and also use the old games on this one! Good Job to the manufacturer! You can't go wrong with this system!
