(200 reviews)

Best Price: $50.99 $30.60

Canon has poured all the Know How of its extraordinary history of developing innovative office machines into each of its copiers, printers, and networked office systems. The same superiority of design and manufacture goes into all of the Canon-branded consumable imaging supplies and parts for this equipment. Naturally, no one makes better parts and supplies for Canon products than Canon. Using genuine Canon parts and supplies is your best insurance against equipment damage, and possibly voiding your equipment warranty.

The CLI-8 from Canon is a pack of four high-capacity color ink cartridges that use long-lasting Chromalife ink for bright and vivid results. Compatible with Pixma models iP4200, iP5200, iP5200R, iP6600D, MP500, MP800, and MP950, each of these four ink cartridges yields up to 280 pages, based on five percent coverage. The ink is also resistant to fading and smudges, so everything you print is sharp and clear.

Customer Reviews

  • Good price

    By APHH43Q8DDG6S on 2006-06-16
To correct an earlier reviewer, the bundling of these inks IS APPROPRIATE. I have a Canon Pixma MP830 and it uses the 4 CLI-8 cartridges along with the 5PGBK. You do not have to buy the bundle if your particular printer does not use the 5PGBK. Anyway, I checked all the major suppliers for genuine Canon cartridges (versus compatibles) and Amazon's price beats them all, especially with free shipping and no sales tax.

  • This set works with the Canon PIXMA MP530 as well

    By A23H489JIZDWGG on 2007-04-25
Just an FYI; the ink set shown here (CLI-8BK, CLI-8M, CLI-8C, and CLI-8Y) also match what's needed in the Canon PIXMA MP530, save for the Canon PGI-5BK 2PK (sold separately). (As of this writing, the MP530 is not listed in the compatible printer list, though the MP500 is. Considering how confusing all this typically gets, I thought I'd mention it.)

Price is great; even better if you're with Amazon Prime (free 2-day shipping and inexpensive overnight shipping).

  • Better price but not without complications.

    By A6FIAB28IS79 on 2006-08-30
[Bordering on the ridiculous: 6/08 and Amazon is selling this 4-color pack for two dollars less than the 3-color (which omits Black 8). I've already accumulated 5 spare Black 8s from previous 4-pack purchases.]

I've discovered that the inconvenience may outweigh the few dollars saved by purchasing the combination pack. My Cyan and Magenta cartridges lasted only 4 weeks and 6 weeks respectively while the others are still going. Purchasing more combination packs would have resulted in a backlog of unused ink. You might order the package now and then (I wish it included Black 5 ink), but given the staggered depletion of ink cartridges, it frequently makes more sense to order the single cartridge. Moreover, the combination of Amazon's one-click ordering and no-postage Prime membershp makes it no less practical for the consumer to order individual cartridges as they expire (though I'm sure Amazon prefers to send out large quantities in the same order).

  • Why is it more expensive?

    By A35XQB3HEVWN1M on 2006-08-30
According to Amazon's own prices, ordering the four tanks separately is $39.34. Why is $45 to order them together?

  • CLI-8 4-Pack

    By A2M8NPYKAK8V5F on 2006-03-20
    The product works; big deal.

What is really important is the cost of the product -- INK! If one converts the few thousands of a litre of ink into gallons, this ink costs THOUSANDS of dollars per gallon. And some people think the oil companies are gouging the price of gasoline!

  • A reasonable price for ink
    By A39JL3OBJIBIX7 on 2006-02-25
I have found this product to provide long life at a fair price, especially compared to my former printer.

  • CLI-8 4 Pack
    By A1P5E2VAARP50C on 2006-06-15
It's misleading for Amazon to bundle a CLI-8 4-pack with a PGI-5BK 2-pack. These cartridges are for different printers. And, all Canon ink is outrageously expensive.

  • Works for PIXMA MP800R
    By A2AF1BCH493EU9 on 2006-07-13
One reviewer suggested this bundle includes a PGBK ink tank, but it doesn't. (That would have been a screaming deal!) So if you own the PIXMA MP800R, you need to buy the PGI-5BK ink tank in addition to this bundle. Otherwise, this is a good deal. Even though I used "free" shipping from Amazon, they arrived in about 4 days.

  • Canon Service and Support is Outstanding
    By ACNO75BJHVOPH on 2006-08-25
You do have to plan ahead because it takes awhile for Amazon to ship this product. I suspect they place huge orders and get a large discount which allows them to provide the lowest price for this OEM product and ship it for free. One of my cartridges on my last order caused an error message stating that I had 2 cyan cartridges installed. I called Canon customer support and they overnighted a new cartridge to me for free without any hassles. I was very impressed. Lowest pricing without tax and free shipping doesn't get any better or more convenient than this.

  • Things to consider...
    By APKSX5NMPHTYP on 2007-02-20
ALL printers eat ink and that's a fact. This bundle does not include the big black ink tank. Know that anywhere you go (office supply, whatever) this is how it's packaged by Canon. I have checked all the local office retail outlets and these babies run $15-$20 more plus gas and aggravation. I personally like the convenience of being able to get the colors separately rather than in one cartridge as was the case with my old printer (if you use one color more than the rest, the whole cartridge is shot). This is practical for me, and those that print in limited color ranges in large quantities (I do alot of brochures, biz cards, etc).
If you're printing alot of photos (high ink saturation) you will fly through cartridges like crazy no matter the brand. I don't so mine last longer than usual. I have also purchased an ink saving software that has helped tremendously with savings.....you may want to consider that. The initial investment has paid for itself many times over. My prints still look great regardless.
I appreciate the way Canon divides the ink because I've tossed too many cartridges not only because of using one color more, but also because of error messages because of taking the cartridge out to "reset" the machine. Oh well, my old Dell printer deserves to be launched off a 12 story building!
Anyhow, consider software to save your ink if you print alot for biz purposes like me. Also, consider what you are saving by printing your own photos versus traditional photo processing and you might change your mind. Fact of the matter is, printers eat ink...and to the person who compares these small cartridges to a huge laser toner tank I can only say "get real"! Laser printers are much more expensive to operate, and are not practical for everyone.

  • I love my Canon Pixma printers and CLI-8 4-pack ink
    By A3UXJCQ89N724 on 2007-09-12
I have been very happy with my Canon Pixma printers. I currently have one in my office and one at my home office. I bought my office machine last summer. Then, this past winter, when my HP printer at my home office died, I replaced it with a Canon, as well. I've broken off my long term relationship with HP and have never looked back. Not once. While I recognize this is not a review about the printers, the fact remains that the printers are worthless without the ink. One thing I like about the Canon pixma ink cartridges is that they are priced significantly lower than the cartridges I purchased for my HP. The reason is simple: Instead of one color ink cartridge, there are 3 color cartridges. When the yellow runs out, simply replace the yellow. In the long run, this ends up being a lot more economical. Additionally, the print head is installed in the printer itself, not in the individual print cartridges, which also saves money. The CLI-8 4-pack is the best way to purchase these cartridges and I have not found a lower price than that offered at Amazon.com. I hate running out of ink, so I keep a couple packages on hand. When I am running low, I place an order online. Shipping and handling are free, there is no sales tax, and the price can't be beat. And yes, I am thrilled with the print quality of my Pixmas. I'm a Realtor. I print MLS sheets, letters, marketing materials, glossy brochures, and even post cards in limited quantity. I am particular about the quality of print and have been more than satisfied with the cartridges and printers. Only once did I have a problem with an ink cartridge. I kept receiving an error message telling me that the wrong tank was in the printer. I kept taking it out and putting it back in, turning the printer off, then on again. (Did the hokey pokey and I turned myself around....) Finally called Canon only to find out that the print cartridge was defective. They sent me a new one, so I can't really complain. Canon printers and ink ROCK!

  • A comment on Canon Ink replacement
    By A1QSIAMV9V427T on 2007-02-26
Before you install new ink cartridges, let the old ones completely run out, let the software indicator turn red. Otherwise Canon's software will not recognize that the tanks have been replaced and will continue to indicate your out of ink.

  • Canon CLI-8 Color Ink Tanks
    By A32QC18Y6GYHKZ on 2006-08-29
Fast service-quick delivery-best price (including postage)I could find on Internet.

  • The best choice?
    By A3MMJEMXBJOJ8H on 2007-01-04
Many people like to refill their ink tanks, or buy less expensive aftermart brands. Because I read so many posts about the problems people had with doing that, I decided to buy a printer that was the most economical with OEM tanks so I could use them.

I love my Pixma 5200 (evidently now discontinued, but the 4200 seems to be about the same thing). See my review. One of the pluses of these printers is the cost of the ink, which seems to be lower than the competition.

There are savings in the multi-tank packaging as well, so I think this is about the cheapest way to print color and with superior quality as well. Long-life ink, no clogs, proper low-ink sensing, excellent colors. This seems to be the way to go at this time in the cycle of technology.

It is hard to imagine how squirting liquid ink onto paper could result in anything good, but it does. You would almost have to think that some improved form of color lasers or such will take over in the future, but for now this is a good way to go.

One star off 'cause it is still too expensive.

  • Ink Sensor Problem
    By A3K9EDTEPAS17E on 2007-03-28
I am still researching whether or not this problem is with the Canon Printer (PIXMA MP530), or with these cartridges. I now have 8 full cartridges which will not work in this printer. This is the correct ink, and made by the printer manufacturer. Canon is leaning toward believing that the printer (only 6 months old) is at fault. They offer warranty repair, but the facility is way too far away to make it worthwhile. They offered me a replacement printer, but only a refurbished model. Be careful with warranties. I have always expected a no charge repair or a new replacement during the warranty period. Evidently things don't work that way today. I am currently corresponding with the Executive Offices of Canon in an attempt to get a new printer. I will update this review when we find out if these cartridges are at fault or if it is the printer.

  • It works. It's expensive. It works. It's expensive.
    By A1VJTXIWAOA50I on 2007-04-01
I hate that I have to pay so much $$$ for ink (Canon, are you listening?) with kids in the house who seem to print everything they see. Tried a place called Cartridge World instead, saved $10 on the 4-set, but the MP500 printer knew the difference- it wouldn't even scan :(
Anyway, Amazon is $4 cheaper than Fry's sale price, with no tax, and free shipping. The least outrageous of the outrageous, I guess you could say. And I can save an image of the Amazon web page with the price, circle it in photoshop, and add "This stuff doesn't grow on TREES, kids!" and use it as the background for my imac's desktop.

They'll probably think it's cute and print it to show their friends. . .

  • Rip-Off
    By A2T86A3F5RCCOX on 2007-09-27
The quality of this product is fine, especially for photos, but if you do any printing, Canon has priced themselves out of the market with these SMALL, EXTREMELY EXPENSIVE, PROPRIETARY cartridges. With this set up you are constantly replacing cartridges and emptying your wallet!!

  • Great prints good price
    By A5JXRY7KNM1QK on 2007-10-10
I tried "aftermarket" ink (about $10 for the counterpart to this item) after going through the ink that came with my MP600. It printed ok, but the color was not as good and you have to remove the chip from the Canon cartridge and stick it to the aftermarket cartridge while wearing the supplied plastic glove. This is not fun when you are in a hurry to get something printed. It seems I'm always in a hurry when I'm printing for some reason!

At any rate, I came back to the Canon ink and I'm glad I did. Amazon gave the usual great service and I'm loving the Prime shipping!

PC Magazine did a printing cost review a couple of issues back and the MP600 was about second from the top for least expensive printing. I was pleased. Canon printers and ink strike a good balance between quality (excellent) and cost per page (always very competitive).

Inkjet printing is not cheap no matter which printer you have, but I'm pleased with this item as the best, most reliable solution for the lowest or almost lowest price.

  • Amazon claims this works with the MX700
    By AJANAWYR8GMXK on 2008-06-04
Amazon claims this works with the MX700. The color inks do, but not the black. Be aware that if you buy for the MX700, you need to throw away the black (you need a CLI-5, not the CLI-8 included).

  • Beware: Manufacturer problem with ink tanks
    By A27TVIDE0N44MC on 2008-07-21
Just wanted let people be aware that there appears to be a batch of these ink tanks where Canon has the wrong chip on the ink tank. This is causing the following error: "U071 - More than one ink tank of the following color is installed." I contacted Canon and they wanted $$$ to troubleshoot and would not send me a new ink tank. Also I bought the ink tanks from Amazon over 30 days ago and could not get a refund. I've used these before and didn't have a problem. But I would recommend that you try your ink tanks immediately so that you can still get a refund if there is a problem.

  • Canon ChromaLife inks
    By A2M4XMGHJUF3KH on 2006-08-13
Great color saturation gives super print photos.
    Only complaint is the expense

  • These inks have to be replaced very often,
    By A25395JLL9VDW2 on 2007-01-09
However nobody can beat Amazon.com price on this item plus free shipping.
These inks for MP830 PRINTER. Quality of the prints is good , but inks ran out fast.Bundling inks are one of the reason I keep buying more inks when out. You can not use the printers other functions such as fax , copy etc. due to "ink tank need replacement "If one of the ink runs out. message pops up although black ink is full. Over all I am not happy with printer and usage of the ink.Canon needs to load up more ink on these ,if that happens I may stick with it for a long time. If not I will be switching over to another brand.

  • Excellent Price
    By A6ER0UOL1SA7 on 2007-01-10
It's ink. Its by the manufacturer, so it works like its supposed to. The ink tanks for this Canon seems to last longer than the ones for our last Epson, and they are cheaper! Canon makes a great printer and multifunction.

  • They work, just not long enough.
    By A3N4VN8GHF6JA5 on 2007-07-06
These cartridges work just fine. The only problem with them is that they run out far sooner than one would hope.

  • Canon TriColor ink - good deal
    By A22MANL4US4RMY on 2007-09-10
I bought the four-pack for my Canon Pixma iP4300 from Amazon because the price was good, and they offer free shipping on orders over $25. Also, I have gotten less than satisfying results from off-brand ink cartridges. I bought a high-rated printer to get good pictures, so why go with ink that is a couple of dollars cheaper? Most of my online shopping is through Amazon, and I have never been disappointed.

  • CANON PRINTER IS GREAT AND INK TANKS ARE TOO
    By A5TZ10YUGWJJ4 on 2007-10-30
Buying these cartridges in Multipacks is a real moneysaver. The cartridges are easy to change out (at least on the 4200 model). Don't make the mistake of changing cartridges when the printer software says one of the tanks is "low". When it really does run out you will be told that.

  • 2 cartridges were defective
    By A3FZC27LCCM0Y8 on 2006-07-06
I was very happy with the purchase until I had to change one of the colors and the cartridge was defective.
So I feel I was shorted one cartridge and will I encounter more damaged ones as I use them up.

This ink produces great photos. The price was right, and they arrived in just a few days. I'd do it again, and that says it all!

  • Canon inkjet color cartridges
    By A33QFH6KM2WH4J on 2007-02-06
I have found the Canon cartridges always perform better than off brand. However the printers use lots of ink and usually tell you that you are about out of ink and your cartridge will be half full.

  • Nothing like the original
    By A3NOBH42C7UI5M on 2007-03-02
I find the ink last a fairly long time (good number of full pages printed) and quality... well, I've tried the self refills and the generic brands and all the ones I tried were awful. I print a lot of photos and only the original inks print my photos in top quality. It isn't worth damaging my printer for the generic inks that aren't as good anyway. I will stick with the original... it's worth the extra money.
