Cheaply Made, SMALL, Not worth 5 dollars, let alone 15.00 By ABXKX8A90IEHS on 2006-11-01
I ordered this as a Christmas gift for my children to teach them about saving money. UPS just delivered it and, I was truly disappointed when I opened it. One would tend to think that a toy sold by DISCOVERY would be well made, sturdy, and worth the money...at least I did, naive me! This 'bank' is flimsy, cheap plastic, and SOOOO small! The Lid is cheap plastic and won't last for any length of time. The LED sceen is only about 1/2 inch by an inch. I would estimate that this bank is only about 6-7(max) inches tall. The bank has a true "made in china" "mass produced" feel to it and all in all...it truly sucks. Save your time and money...look for something else. Honestly, it's only a little bigger than a peanut butter jar, they forget to tell you this important piece of information in the description. How clever of them, but hey...at least they make a fast buck right? (Insert some serious sarcasm here) Thanks Amazon and Discovery toys!!! My kids will be thrilled with this!
Nice Gift! By AJW30RHOZC4OY on 2007-02-21
I bought one of these for each of my 5 year old boys for Christmas this past year. They have been very well-received.
The lightweight plastic jars are probably about 1-quart in size, so they are nice and big. I don't understand why a previous reviewer referred to their small size. They are not small. They are plenty large, but not too large.
We haven't encountered any real problems with these. The boys are only 5, so sometimes they do slip in a non-real coin and it does get counted, usually as a quarter. Whatever. If we're concerned about the actual amount of money in the jar, the counter can easily be reset by taking out the batteries and putting them back in. Then, we just start over & don't put in the tokens that aren't real coins. It's not a big deal.
The boys really enjoy these banks. We have found them to be a nice alternative to a traditional piggy bank, or the like.
I would definitely recommend these as a gift idea. Not many kids you'd give them to would already have one.
Almost anyone would like this, I think.
Serviceable bank for children and adults By A24BY1UVO2CODZ on 2006-12-04
Last year I bought 5 of these banks, the first from Highlights Magazine
for my husband and me to see if it actually worked, and then I found it on Amazon and bought four more for less money. My husband and I drop our coins in it--it works well for us and four grandsons ages 6 to 11. I think the product literature said this 7-inch bank holds about $30, but ours now has $40 in coins in it. It isn't an indestructible product--but it is a sturdy mason-type jar bank with a top of plastic that holds its own so it is serviceable. I see no reason to give it less than 5 stars. We haven't tried to reset the digital meter yet, so I can't say whether that will work or not. Good product.
Awesome ! By A1WW1FAZE35NK0 on 2006-11-18
I have a 4 and 6 year old that love to do odd jobs for change and they love their banks ! It keeps track of how much they have saved so they don't have to keep dumping their money out all over the floor to count it. This is not a flimsy mass produced bank. The only way it wouldn't last is if you have a child that doen't respect their toys.
Money Jar By ACG26FKH9K96R on 2006-11-08
How cute is this. We were just putting the money in an old water bottle.
This way my grandson can watch his pennies grow into dollars. Great item.
- Great gift for all ages!

I bought this bank for my 6 year old daughter, who is in first grade and has the cent value of money down pat. She has only had it a month and has nearly $15 in it from scamming change from both me and her Daddy around the house. While she had the value of money down and how to count it and all, it has really sunk in with this bank. We look at how much is in the bank and then she figures out how much the amount will be when the next coin she has in her hand goes in. The counter tells her if she is right.
At first she did have a little bit of trouble with putting coins in firmly enough. But after a little trial and error(like the first 6 coins) she caught on how to put the coins in and hasn't had a problem since. We actually did reset the counter as she knew that was what you do if you mess up(my kid is very electronic friendly). It reset with no problem and we took the coins out and started again. After all, we must be accurate!
The jar is very durable in my humble opinion. For example, one day she was running down the basement stairs tripped a bit and dropped the jar, it bounced the rest of the way down the stairs and the plastic jar was fine and so was the counter lid.
Overall this bank rocks, she uses it daily and gets very excited as the money adds up. I feel it's a great way for kids to save their change and have a concrete way of seeing how much they have in their banks. I'm actually thinking of buying one for myself, if I can ever keep my own change since SOMEONE keeps scamming mine off my dresser and wallet.
- Use for Fun rather than accuracy.

My son got this product for Christmas. The idea of this bank is that it counts your coins so you know how much money you have. He loves this bank-it is durable and large enough to fit quite a bit of change.
I have issues with the bank, though. It often counts pennies as dimes and it does not recognise dimes at all. We put them in and it does not register any amount.
If you are ok with the inaccuracies in the amount then this is a bank that you would like to purchase.
- We love it!
     By A2I14QNHKDUQR3 on 2006-12-26
I purchased this for my 4 year old daughter so she could save her money and learn more about coin denominations.
Contrary to the other review, we have found this very sturdy. My daughter is rough with her toys and this has lasted six months. She drags it around the house and drops it often. I am able to tighten the lid enough to where she cannot open it, although we have had to reset it more than once.
She loves to show the toy to adults when they visit. They become enthralled and deposit coins into her bank. Her uncle even purchased one for himself.
- no dollar
     By A19XGO9O5QNL9O on 2007-01-09
Seems to work fine so far. Does not accept dollar coins (but you can force them in) - counts them as quarters - so I guess it does not accept anything larger than a quarter. The mechanism is a bit unnatural - rather than simply drop your coins in, you must actually push them through the slot and resistance is felt. I think it uses a mechanical device to sense how large the coin is as it is pushed through the opening. My 8 year old daughter likes it anyhow.
- Kids Money Bank
     By A1087A0MITUHLG on 2007-01-14
This is fun for any age! My 6 year old, 10 year old and 12 year old all love it. I'd like one for myself for all the loose change with I come home with at the end of the day. He's only had it for 3 weeks and already he's saved up over $8.00 with his change from his piggy bank and donations from family members! It's really fun and it teaches kids to save money. I highly recommend it.
- GREAT Savings *COIN ONLY product
     By A1OB0PMDH8EKJD on 2007-01-24
We purchased two of them for the kids (5 & 8) for Christmas. After waiting to see them use it, I find the product GREAT (I too would get one for myself). If you read all the reviews you will see that most people agree. The one review that stuck out in my mind was how "small" it was. ITs pretty large and right NOW at 1/3rd full, its HEAVY. So imagine your child carting around a full jar of coins. I would deposit my coins in their to not weight my purse down.
Remember, its coin only pennies, nickles, dimes and quarters. This is meant to save money not take out money. Seek an alternative banking system to keep dollars in.
Were very happy!
- Love it!
     By ARM75L3D8QWBY on 2007-01-10
I bought 3 of these. Two I gave away for Christmas gifts and the other one I kept for myself. I've been depositing money in it for 5 or 6 weeks and it works great. It's anything but flimsy, I don't understand the other review. It makes me wonder if we're talking about the same item. I will definitely buy it again for other gifts.
- A really neat bank that saves you counting change
     By A1U9RHC7L1M7GY on 2007-01-16
This is a really neat bank. The jar is nice sized and made of plastic so it is kid friendly (not easily breakable). The counter is not easily reset so the amount in the jar stays correct. The only unfortunate thing is that there isn't a way to keep your kids from taking money from it. In my opinion it can be enjoyed by children of all ages. I figured that if it was set off to the side by my children I would just take over using it myself. The price was reasonable as well.
- I use this my self
     By A3CFT6SNB7N30B on 2007-02-23
I have a lot of chance because of my job (tips) this is a fun and useful way for me to keep my coins in one place my only complaint is if you don't push the coins hard you can accedently give a false reading to the counter it may be hard for kids to use proberly as a result (also it starts to get very heavy once you hit about $30.00) othere wise no complaints
- Money Jar
     By A922SEO6GM968 on 2007-12-04
I liked the concept of this toy if it actually worked past the 5 minutes my son had it. You should have seen his excitement when he first put his change in and then the disappointment when it stopped working after the first handful of change. I tried calling the company 4 times with no avail.
- Makes Saving Fun
     By A1NGT2VNGLUW8E on 2007-01-31
I thought the bank was as described. We have had a lot of fun saving the change, but the bank did not have an accurate amount (off by less than a dollar). It was simple to reset. It was worth the $15.00.
- A nice idea, doesn't always work properly.
     By A3FPK9HAVEJORZ on 2007-09-24
I am not sure this counts accurately, but it's still a nice bank. Sometimes it seems to add too many coins. It may be just overly sensitive.
- Boy loves it
     By A37GV96Z03OCEZ on 2007-02-13
The 4.5 year old really loves stuffing all the pennies and other loose change he finds into this jar. Slowly teaching him what the number means and the bigger it gets the BETTER toy he wants he can get. :)
- Fun for the entire Family!
     By A3EBOL0JTW4QEN on 2007-02-15
I bought three of these banks as gifts for kids ages 8-11years old. They were so well received that I bought an additional bank for my family. We are having a great time watching our coins add up for a family vacation this year. The only problem I can see with the bank is that if you do not place the coin in fast enough the coin pops up and registers it twice. My 8 year old daughter commented that the jar should have an alarm on the lid, just in case someone tries to "borrow" the change! Overall, a cute item for those hard to buy for kids!
- Good Savings
     By A1X2KNK34N6FRK on 2007-05-14
My son ejoys this bank although it is tricky to make sure the money goes in correctly so the count is correct. It seems durable and I am sure it will last a good long time.
- Dimes don't work
     By A1IG2B0CUKUKXF on 2007-05-26
This is a great toy and my daughter loves it, however, we've used it less than 6 months and already the dimes aren't registering and counting toward the total.
- Good Idea, Poor Manufacturing
     By ARH0FZXQJYUWP on 2008-04-27
It has a nice look and the kids do enjoy putting the money in it and watching the value go up and counting along with it. It is an enjoyable product. Unfortunately the manufacturing of this product is really poor. I bought two, and one was faulty. Being a doit yourselfer I popped it open and found that one of the wires broke free from the soldering point. It was either soldered poorly or nor connected at all. The wires were very fine and thin, so it may be that the wire is too fragile to handle shipping. Fortunately, I soldered it and that fixed the broken one. Having to fix something you have bought new, though, is really not an enjoyable customer experience which is why I gave it a average review and terrible durability rating.
- A Cute Bank
     By A34UBO3MHSB1EG on 2007-03-24
I like the novelty of this bank, which counts your change for you. I got one for myself, and one for my 13 year old daughter. You have to push the coins through firmly the first time, because if you start to insert, then pull back out - it is counted! When that happened, I just lifted the lid and slipped it in so my count would still be accurate.
- My Teenagers Love It!
     By A2S7U0CTZHP0VW on 2007-11-28
The bank works great. Counts accurately. Resetting it is a bit of a pain as the reset button is located under the lid to the battery compartment which is secured with a screw.
- would buy again
     By A1L9RS914V40KX on 2007-12-19
I bought 2 for my boys. They do like to see how their money grows...unfortunately it does count extra dimes when trying to insert the quarter and it doesn't go in quick enough. Will hold a good amount of change, it is less than 1/3 full and is storing over $[...]. Great for incentive building for both boys age 5 1/2 and 7 1/2.
