  I highly recommend maxim train sets, especially for children 3 and older. Our 2 year old loves it too but would need a lot of help to set it up. My four year old daughter recently got this set for her birthday to add to an existing maxim train set we had. These are quality sets that provide fun for everyone! I think I enjoy setting up the train tracks different ways as much as my children do!

  We got this track for my son's 4th birthday. We didn't want to spend the big bucks for the Thomas track, but we did want one that was durable and that would fit the Thomas set and other tracks to make adding on to the track easier. This set is durable, and it does fit well with Thomas sets (Will got two of those for his birthday from other family members.) The only problem is that it's not puppy proof. The suspension bridge was the first piece to get chewed by the puppy, who seems to find every piece that we don't pick up. Even without the bridge Will has had a lot of fun. A month later he still plays with it everyday. His track building skills have really improved and he enjoys making different configurations. This is a great low cost alternative to more expensive brands, easy to add on to and hours of fun for the whole family.

  I was very disappointed in the Maxim product line, which is made in China. Wood is very light-weight and is able to be scratched with the fingernail, unlike the Brio set I grew up with. The connectors on the tracks are unevenly cut and the saw cuts actually extend into the body of the track. Some of the pieces are also difficult to fit together. We decided to return ours despite having to pay shipping both ways. Price is cheap for a reason - poor materials and poor craftsmanship.
