  • Cheap like me? Yeah, you're gonna like this too...

    By AW7V4BZ6FYJ10 on 2006-02-28
Being frugal (all right, cheap) by nature, I held off on buying a single-serve coffeemaker until I could find one I liked that offered a reusable filter. When Keurig came out with the B-40 Elite, a handsome, reasonably priced unit, and announced that it would be releasing its "My K-Cup" reusable filter for separate sale early in 2006, I was primed. As soon as I saw this product on Keurig's website, I was ready to buy my new coffeemaker from Amazon.com and the filter from Keurig's web site. My only wish was that Amazon.com would stock the reusable filter so buyers could purchase the coffeemaker and filter in one fell swoop, and here my wish is about to come to pass!

I have had my Keurig B-40 Elite for about a month now, and I've had great success with it. Bear in mind that if you're using the reusable filter, you must first remove the black plastic K-Cup holder from the unit's filter assembly (instructions on how to do this are included with "My K-Cup"; the black piece in the coffeemaker's filter basket doesn't act like it's supposed to come out, but it is, and it does).

Also, I've read elsewhere that some people don't like having to remove the reusable filter and clean it out after every use. However, I've found it to be a relatively simple affair: the reusable filter doesn't drip when you remove it, and takes about 30 seconds to rinse out after each use. You can use it again right away to brew successive cups.

One caveat is that the output splashes a bit when using the My K-Cup filter, so I always have a damp paper towel at the ready when I brew a cup. That having been said, I'm really happy to be using my own coffee and saving lots of money in the process. Those who are, like me, loathe to shell out 55 cents a cup for K-Cups will probably really like the new My K-Cup.

  • Easy to Use and Environmentally Responsible!

    By A2FE7YZBAKASXY on 2006-04-29
Let me start out by saying that I love my Keurig brewer. It brews a great cup of coffee (GMCR Dark Magic is my fav) and the convenience can't be beat. However, I've always felt a little guilty every time I throw out a used K-Cup. It seems like they're not only completely UNrecycleable, but totally UNbiodegradeable as well.

Enter the My K-Cup reuseable filter. Yes, it takes a little practice to fill up the mesh filter with grounds without making a total mess, and sure it takes a few seconds of rinsing when finished. But the result is a great cup of coffee and no guilt trip about filling the landfill with punched out K-Cups. And if you're feeling reckless, it's an easy switch back to those good ol' prefab cups.

I'd recommend this to anyone with a compatible brewer. It's not that much more of a hassle to use, the results are excellent, and there's no waste. Oh yeah, it's also a whole lot cheaper to fill these with your favorite pre-ground GMCR blend (Dark Magic baby!) than to buy the equivalent number of cups.

The only negative that I've seen is a tendency for more "sludge" to get through to the bottom of your cup. Watch that last sip, it's a doosy!

  • A must-have, but very poorly made...buy more than one

    By A1AYBKV6DO2389 on 2007-04-21
Unfortunately you really need one of these things to use your Keurig properly unless you are dedicated to spending lots of money and killing the environment with K-cups. These things last us about 2-3 months max. They are so poorly made that they seem designed to break after a certain time period. I have gone through three so far. The plastic latches that hold the top on just break off and crumble away, no matter how carefully you screw on the lid. Then your coffee spills over the sides when you brew it. However the cost of continuously replacing these things is likely offset by the savings of not using k-cups which are currently overpriced.

  • Here's a tip for stronger coffee

    By AFRFH7BVPPYZP on 2008-10-10
After reading many reviews about the problems with the My K-Cup and experimenting on my own, I have found an easy solution to the problem of weak coffee using this filter. As others have noted, the water goes through the My K-Cup way too fast as compared to the K-Cups. My solution was to take apart a K-Cup and use the outer plastic shell with the My K-Cup filter. Here's all you need to do:

Take a used K-Cup and cut the top foil off of a K-Cup. Cut the paper filter out of the K-Cup. It's okay not to cut it all the way off of the rim of the K-Cup because you will need to cut the top of the K-Cup (where it gets wider at the top). You need to cut the top of the K-Cup off because you need to fit the K-Cup shell into the My K-Cup holder. Once you slide the bottom shell of the K-Cup into the holder, you can add your coffee into the My K-Cup (tapping or gently pressing the coffee so that it is not loose inside the filter). Then place the My K-Cup filter into the holder and cover as normal. When brewing, the K-Cup shell surrounds the My K-Cup filter and slows down the water by making it pass through the punctured hole that the prepackaged K-Cup normally uses.

The great thing about this is that you can re-use the K-Cup shell that you cut apart over and over so once you have cut one apart you don't have to worry about it again- use the My K-Cup as you normally would.

I'm hoping Keurig will have figured this out in the near future and add a premade piece that is included the My K-Cup, but until then, I have found that this solves the problem of weak coffee.

  • Excellent Althernative

    By A21G4S0VKUTLUK on 2007-02-18
Although the reuseable coffee filter isn't as convenient as the ready-to-use K-cups (that's why I've rated it 4 instead of 5), it's a much less expensive alternative that works well. I originally bought the reuseabel filter because I had received several gift bags of ground coffee for Christmas from Starbucks and Green Mountain and didn't want them to go to waste.

To use the reuseable filter, you simply fill the filter with about two tablespoones of coffee grounds, put the filter in the base and screw on the top. Then pop out the base coffee holder from the Keurig, which takes one finger and every little effort, and replace it with the reuseable filter rig. Brew as normal. No grounds get in your coffee cup!

When it's done brewing, unscrew the cap from the reusable rig, dump the used coffee grounds, and rince the filter. It's that easy! And while it's a few more steps than using the prefilled K-cups, it's a much more economical way to use the single-serve Keurig coffee maker.

  • Easy to use, flavor not as great as it could be...
    By A3LMOSDOZ1ZXZ9 on 2006-06-30
This filter is great and easy to use but I have noticed that the flavor of the coffee is not as good. It has a bit of an instant taste. I imagine that the Keurig K-Cups are processed to allow for a quick brew and using this filter with your standard coffee does not allow for the same flavor.

  • Inexpensive K-Cup Alternative
    By A1WME4X079A0PC on 2006-08-18
The Keurig 5048 My K-Cup Reuseable Coffee Filter is a relatively inexpensive K-Cup alternative and works as it is supposed to. If you only want one cup of coffee, you only have to clean out the filter once. But if you want to make individual cups for several people, you must clean out the filter between each brew. For those days when you have guests, I recommend the prepackaged K-cups.

  • You'll want two of these
    By AT9U5ZE5OO84C on 2007-02-26
If you are like me and have a Keurig coffee maker, you really need this little filter. Actually, you probably will be happier if you have two. Keurig makes some incredible coffee machines and you can get the prepackaged coffee in a lot of different blends and flavors. However, it's a little pricey. Also, there's all that coffee that you receive as gifts or smells so good as you pass it in the store that you buy a pound. You could pull out your old drip coffee maker and make a pot, but it's better brewed in the Keurig.

I purchased one reusable filter when I bought the Keruig and quickly realized I needed another. I've found the right amount of coffee to use so my coffee comes out very tasty. You'll need to experiment to get the strength you prefer. There are very hard to see lines on the filter to indicate teaspoons.

If you want a second cup or a cup for someone else, you either have a second filter (like me) or you're washing the filter a lot. I have noticed grounds in my coffee when I use this filter but I think that's because I'm using coffee that is ground too fine. The instructions recommend coarse ground coffee.

  • Why they break...
    By A3AT2F9F4VCC2K on 2008-03-14

I have gone through a few of these as have many other reviewers...but I think I see why these break so often: You must run your finger over the top of the basket to remove extra coffee grains so that the lid goes on easily. If you don't you can still get the top on, but it puts pressure on the plastic lips that hold it together. So a bit of care in keeping the basket top clean (a quick finger swipe is all you need) will save you from having to buy these often.

  • Love It!
    By A3R52MWQ6MMN0K on 2006-05-05
The Keurig is awesome and this filter is not only convenient, it makes my quick cups of coffee economical!

  • Good Idea - Bad Design
    By AEKJV6QTK4AN1 on 2006-10-03
The only reason we bought the Keurig machine was because these reusable cups were available. Otherwise, the concept of individually packaged single use plastic containers is just environmentally irresponsible.

These K-Cups are almost as disposable as the prepackaged coffee cups.

The problem with them is that the screw flange around the top eventually breaks off. We've been through four already and are on our fifth. They are too brittle, and no amount of care or vigilance will prevent them from breaking.

Keurig has been pretty good about replacing them, but don't seem to pass the info within the company up to R&D to fix what must be a huge problem for them.

  • Also Works With Keurig B-70 System
    By A2HYLKEGBV6XEU on 2006-10-09
The reusable K-Cup filter assembly allows you to use your own gourmet ground coffee in your Keurig brewer. Simple to use and clean, highly recommended. Also works with the new Keurig B-70 Gourmet Single Cup Home Brewing System that was released October 1, 2006.

  • Keurig personal coffee filter
    By ANA2W3A9Q981G on 2006-08-31
I love my Keurig coffee maker but missed some of my very special coffees. Now I can grind and brew my favorites with this filter.

  • Defeats the purpose of the Keurig system!
    By A2C1HY1C779RR8 on 2007-03-25
I've written elsewhere about the wonders of Keurig coffee makers, being a Keurig owner (B100) for a good 4 years now, so I'll cease on this impulse by saying it is the best *convenience* single-cup coffee brewing system on the market.

The My K-Cup Reusable Coffee Filter defeats much of the utility function that makes me say what I said in the above paragraph. To use this attachment, you have to partially disassemble the brewing mechanism (takes a few seconds) and then you have to bother with grinds, mess, cleanup, and reassembly. Yes, K-Cups cost more than buying bulk beans and grinding yourself. But saving money is not a feature of the Keurig system whose primary purpose of ownership is a dependable tasty cup of well-brewed coffee delivered quick and easy. In short, given the cost of the Keurig system, and the alternatives in the marketplace, the My K-Cup Reusable Coffee Filter is a silly way to "save money."

Lastly, if throwing away plastic K-Cups truly bothers you, or causes "guilt," then I suggest staying away from convenience coffee makers in general, or use the various systems out there that allow you to make coffee "pads" that you can use in most drip brewers.

  • Great Little Product
    By A36OXWMROWZN72 on 2007-05-21
Very simple to use and no problem if you read and follow directions. Use coarse coffee for best results. Shake a regular K-cup, you can hear the grounds which means the coffee is coarse. Be gentle when you put the top on. It goes on very easily; no force required. Fill the little basket to just below the plastic rim. Cleaning is no problem. Right after the coffee brews brews rinse the lid and holder under the faucet and use the hose sprayer to clean the basket and it gets all the residue out of the mesh. I have a Kroger store near me which carries different blends of Millstone ground coffee in little 1.75oz bags for $1.59. You can pour the coffee from the little bag directly into the basket. Like others I do recommend doing this over the sink for any stray coffee grounds.

  • Third Filter In Less Than A Year
    By A2X92GWU4RIEZW on 2007-09-25
It is sad that the Keurig My K-Cup Reuseable Coffee Filter is such substandard in quality. I just ordered my third one since January 2007! I like the convenience of it and don't understand why it can't be made out of a better material, like stainless steel. It cracks, and splits too easily. I am glad the coffee maker is nicer, because I would not be buying any Keurig products!

  • Keurig My K-cup, poor design, doesn't last
    By A2NOOLYF6JCN2E on 2007-10-30
I bought Keurig because you can use your own coffee but the My K-cups are poorly made. There isn't enough space between the lid and the lip to accommodate the rim of the filter insert. When you tighten the lid it puts stress on the thin plastic lip which eventually splinters and breaks off, once the splinters cut my hand as I was tightening the lid. The company sent me replacements advising me to not overtighten, but they all crack no matter how careful you are. If you don't tighten the lid enough, coffee grounds and water spray out making a mess in the machine and grounds in your coffee. The My-K cups aren't cheap either at $15 each. The company must be aware of the problem, don't know why they don't fix it.

  • Everyday Use
    By A23NX29IZRYZ7T on 2006-11-05
I now use the reusable filters at all times.
I have found I like Tullys Coffe the best and I
can get it locally. I drink 5 to 10 cups of coffee a
day, and I its not too expensive using ground
    coffee.

  • Great accessory
    By A1RW2EHHFWF1X4 on 2007-06-05
So I just purchased the Keurig B60, which I reviewed separately. I also purchased this little gizmo as I have a lot of coffee at my house.

After reading other reviews, my primary concern was the durability of the plastic...some reviewers commented that the holder had broken, etc. I've had this for 1 day so I can't comment on that.

What I can comment on is why this thing is great:

1.) You are concerned about the environment to the extent that the k-cups aren't something you wish to throw away on a daily basis.
2.) You don't like the selection of K-Cup coffees out there.
3.) You have an absolute favorite coffee that you can't get in a K-Cup.
4.) You just like buying things at Amazon.com

If you agree with any of those, this accessory will suit you.

    My recommendations:

1.) Medium/Coarse grinds do not brew a very strong cup of coffee. Consider getting a finer grind.
2.) Pack the grinds into the filter like you see people do when making espresso...you'll get more flavor out of the coffee.
3.) don't overfill - the grinds will come out.

Overall, this thing works well. I'll likely use it when my wife wants her "Green Mountain Coconut Hazelnut" that you can't get anywhere but on the GMCR site. And keeping a zillion plastic k-cups out of landfills isn't bad either.

  • Reusable filter makes weak coffee every time
    By A23JMGA42N3CY9 on 2006-11-25
The reusable filter was the feature that sold me on the Keurig K-cup machine. I love the coffees available in K-cups, but like my own coffees at times too.
The filter brews are never at normal strength because the stream of water passes thru the grounds so fast it doesn't allow for the flavor to accrue. I'v tried all grind options, but noithing works. Have any users found the solution?

  • Poor Design - Intentional?
    By A2HXSE75Z9BTRO on 2007-01-19
The product does work but poorly. The design is such (see the picture of the filter basket on the advertisement) that the bottom of the filter basket is a flat circle about the size of a quarter and made of solid plastic, only the side walls are fine mesh for the liquid to pass through. This poses a problem because the basket is designed to go into a complete housing with the hot water pouring in from a small hole in the center of the top. When the water forces its way through the center of the coffee, it pushes all the grinds up to the top of the filter basket leaving a gap of empty space between the bottom of the basket and the top. The water only touches a small portion of the grinds momentarily while the water passes through the center of the grinds. This then creates the gap and the water goes through the bottom of the mesh basket touching very little of the grinds giving very weak coffee. No matter how many coffee grids you put in the basket this will happen. When you open the lid you and touch the grinds they are mostly dry. It is my belief that this had to have been designed poorly intentionally...or at the very least not redesigned to correct the problem. Why? To make people return to purchasing the more expensive k-cups because using the filter basket makes you realize that you are wasting coffee so you actually end up defeating your original purpose of saving money. I purchased the B-60 and love the machine and its innovation for the most part, I just detest it when big business does things like that. Although it is not American made (usually an American greedy corporate ploy), this is why the Japanese are killing all other countries with manufacturing design and customer satisfaction. Sorry if I sound like a fanatic! To correct the problem all Keurig has to do is redesign the filter basket to the shape of a cone tapering off to an almost point at the bottom, like the filter basket of the Krupps coffee maker (I took photos of the Krupps filter to illustrate but just learned I cannot attach them here). I find it hard to believe that engineers as brilliant as the ones that engineered this machine cannot fix an obvious poor design like this. I say obvious because all products are tested and this would have been seen in the early stages of the design and testing phase. Anyway, the machine is well made and is convenient for one cup brewing. Oh, just in case a corrective action has escaped the engineers at Keurig I will go to their site next and pretty much repeat this to them with the photos...lets see if they do anything. If they do I will buy it. Keep in mind, the product does work but poorly! If you like strong coffee you will not be happy, but if you like weak coffee you may be satisfied.

  • Does what it is supposed to...
    By A3RT72MH776FLK on 2007-02-20
It definitely works and does what I expected it to do, and is certainly easy enough to use. However, I thought that I would use it much more to save money because those K-Cups are expensive. I found, after all, that the reason I bought the Keurig was for the ease/cleanup of the K-Cups! It is good to have though, should I run out of K-Cups or if there is a flavor I want that doesn't come in K-Cups.

  • Works well, use your favorite grind
    By A289ARF9YKYKD4 on 2007-12-03
After reading some of the negative reviews regarding the flimsiness of the reusable filter I hesitated to get it. After many months of using the K-cups and assessing the different offerings, I finally broke down and got the filter.
I am glad I did. I use it regularly and have done so for several months. I have not encountered any of the problems mentioned by others. The tabs ARE a bit small, and possibly will deteriorate in time. But the ability to use my own French Roast ground coffee and the reduced cost make this a very viable alternative.
I do not give it 5 stars because it is true that it's a bit of a hassle to change over to the K-cup insert when my family want to brew their favorite flavored coffees.
I will update the review if I run into problems....for now I'm enjoying good coffee.

  • Weak coffee
    By A15PYBUZRTOT2O on 2008-02-08
I was excited to find this filter because I love Dunkin Donuts coffee, but also love the convenience of being able to make just one cup of coffee at a time in my Keurig coffee pot. I was sure that this was going to be the best of both worlds, but it wasn't. I'm not sure what the difference is in using the reusable filter and the pre-packaged K-Kups, but when using the reusable filter the coffee is very weak. It looks like dirty water, not coffee. Each time I used the filter I used more coffee, but the coffee was always as weak as dishwater. In looking into the filter after brewing, the majority of coffee was just pushed to the side, and the water flowed straight through the middle, leaving just a small hole in the coffee, while most of the coffee was untouched. I am very disappointed in this product.

  • Great idea but ....
    By A3J69QKHSA2XE1 on 2007-09-25
This reusable filter is a great idea to save money (buying all those prepackaged coffee K cups) and to eliminate a lot of trash. Ok it's sort of a pain to clean out the grounds from the screen, but certainly do-able. BUT the plastic rim breaks off after limited use. PLEASE make a better quality, longer lasting item!

  • a great reason to own a Keurig
    By A2YGG0N488RMG0 on 2007-10-08
This is the reason I bought a Keurig. Without this item, you'd be stuck buying overpriced coffee from the company forever. Withit, you can buy and brew any coffee you want. A definite must own accessory, and a great reason to buy a Keurig coffee maker over other brands out there.

  • The best of both worlds!
    By A1JVYEF7FOCTRV on 2007-12-22
I was so thrilled to get a keurig from my husband this year, i immediatly went through a ton of k-cups. I like the flavor of coffee available in the cups, but i love my starbucks too, and ive been missing it..Now i get the best of both worlds with the re-usable set up. If you are yearning for a strong cup, which you generally dont get with the k-cups, this is the thing for you. Ive not had the breakage problem some have reported here-and the cleanup is a breeze. I scoop the grinds into the filter, run the machine and when done, i just rinse in the sink and air dry. Doesnt really need washed with soap and water every time-it cleans very easily.

I have had nothing but strong, great coffee with the filter-even on the larger size cup setting, no leaking, spillage, boiling over, etc. Works just as i thought it should.

Im still buying the k-cups, as i said i enjoy the variety, the ease, especially in the morning when you dont want to think, but to know i can still get my ground coffee whenever i want, is great. This thing costs less than one box of cups-its worth it!

  • Only lasts a couple of weeks
    By A2N913FT7PZYM7 on 2007-12-25
I have gone through 3 of these and they are not made well. The tabs on the top of it start to break off no matter how careful you are when twisting it together. They need to come up with a better design.

  • Breaks in less than two months.
    By A3GDYVCSYEW1SN on 2007-12-31
This is actually a piece of junk. Mine lasted two months--and we only used it at weekends!! So it lasted for approximately 40 cups of coffee which equates to a cost of around 37 cents per cup ($14.95/40) on top of the cost of the coffee itself. Based on this, you're cheaper buying the k-cups.
I've written to Keurig expressing my disgust at their worse-than-poor quality product--but, so far, no response is forthcoming.
Update ( I should have done this a long time ago): Keurig did send me a replacement "My K-Cup." free of charge. However, it's still a piece of junk.
I'm going to get a "Pod Holster" so I can try pods in my Keurig machine.

  • Poor product
    By A33CQ1X5UQU50A on 2008-01-16
Just like the others have said. they plastic tabs on the lid break after a very very short time. I got the keurig unit as a christmas gift, so i probably used mine a dozen or so times, alternating back and forth between the k-cups. i'll have to rethink my everyday usage of this unit if i have to keep replacing this filter. I guess Keurig really wants you to keep over paying for their "patented" K-cups.

UPDATE: I did contact Keurig and after giving them my coffee maker model number they sent me 2 replacement units.
