AVAST! THIS IS ONE REALLY BAD EGG, SO DON'T DO ANYTHING STUPID By A848W2ZX4BQ78 on 2006-09-08
Bein' the pirate that I be, I thought 't would be an entertainin' piece o' treasure that I might be sharin' with me 3 little scallywags on some balmy, moonlit summer's eve. Me mouth a-waterin', I rips open the shrink-wrap to uncover a fine-looking, scrolled-up treasure map. I palmed the four pewter, ship-shaped pirate tokens and marvelled at the detailed design of the gaming cards. Me timbers were a' shiverin, mateys! Then, I commandeered the DVD remote from me landlubber of a mate and...Mother's love! It was like bein' marooned on an island and a'wonderin' why all the rum was gone! Things wasn't what they appeared to be, and repeated attempts to etablish an accord with me brain, the DVD presentation and the rules (more like guidelines) allowed me to see things as they truly be. Try as we might, try as we may, me and the offspring had to admit that we wasn't havin' not one bit o' fun. The ashes of false laughter filled our mouths as we took turn after turn striving for whatever profit was in it for us. It was then we realized we were cursed consumers. I be, therefore, disinclined to recommend this loot to ought but the likes of Davey Jones hisself. It was our intention to board our token ships, land on the map-- on Tortuga!--raid, pillage, plunder and otherwise... just have lots and lots of swashbucklin' fun! Instead, we just...feel...cold. That's what you call ironic.
AAAARRRGHH MATEY! YE PLUNDERED ME $35 GOLD PIECES! By A1OMXVXXP07F05 on 2006-08-22
Well, this is an interesting game to say the least.
The basics of the game are as follows:
You roll a die and move around a map trying to obtain more booty cards (rum, gold or silver) to match your treasure hunt card. Once you have enough, the game will tell you where you need to sail to bury your treasure. You can fight, plunder and dock at islands to get more booty cards. But be careful, you can lose these cards too!
Land on any space on the map and check your coordinates from the DVD to see if you've found anything.
Other than the red ship, the other 3 look almost the same so it's kind of hard to tell exactly what ship is what.
Also, going to the DVD remote every single turn really drags the game out. Yes it is entertaining for about the first 10 minutes, then after that, it just gets tedious. You input your coords, you wait for the scene to load, you watch the scene, you click out of the scene to go back to the main menu so you can do it all over again.
A typical turn is like this:
Roll dice...move ship...attack if you can...go to a port if you can...if not, enter coords on DVD and see if you've found any booty...next persons turn.
Cool idea, but fun really only fun for about 15 minutes, then it just gets old.
Save your booty and buy the movie on DVD when it comes out for more entertainment than this.
The whole family loved this game!! By A1KM6ZQBSZ3IUD on 2006-12-28
I appreciate the previous reviews, but we had already gotten the game by the time I read them. My family - ages 4, 6, 10 and three adults playing really enjoyed this game. We played until we had a winner (not too long)and then everyone remaining wanted to play to get a second place winner. Just our opinion - but we had a good time!
Shiploads of FUN! By AO843FI5IRBBB on 2006-12-29
Yarrr! This game be ship loads of fun! Even me young daughter Grace (yes, named in part after Grace O'Malley) was able to sail the high seas. Unfortuneatly, I was her first target and was relieved of the burden of me entire booty by the third turn.
We were rolling on the floor when one player was once again marrooned on Rum Runners island. Players made pacts, not in the rules...nor disallowed, they are more like guidelines... and consipired to block those players about to win.
This game was fun from the time we left home port until we buried the booty. I recommend this game to everyone...we had no issues with scene delay in the DVD and the island challenges you play ellicited cheers (and jeers) of "YARRRR!" from all of the pirates sailing the board. The added dimension of fortune cards made it a risk to attack other ships, not to mentioned the black spot that lurks, even after you succesfully plundered a fellow pirates booty. Great game with many dimensions.
Great game once we got going! By A3KQ0X5AXSKQPM on 2007-04-16
Three of us played this game--two parents and our 11-year-old. The first game took a long time because we didn't realize a key part of the game was getting to/from the ports. We spend all our time "out at sea".
But our 11-year-old still asked to play again two days later! The second game took about 20 minutes, was fast-paced and a lot more fun (but almost too short!). The third game took longer, and was still interesting. We waged battles and had a lot of fun with the games at each port stop. The clues and games were even fun and challenging for us adults.
There ARE some gray areas about the rules, which unfortunately is common in most new games these days. But we easily came up with guidelines along the way, and there wasn't anything that kept us from enjoying the game.
I'd also like to say that the setup and cleanup is a breeze--they actually designed the game box to hold all the pieces neatly once you put them away! This is another place where I think a lot of games today fall short.
