  • Great after fit and Break in

    By ANU5TVQI1T8JS on 2006-03-05
I bought these and did have a tough time with getting a proper fit. I was about to send them back. Then I took the time found the correct ear piece and bam. Fit was awesome and ALL sound was blocked out. Then the longer I wear then the better the sound has become. The Bass is awesome. I listen to a lot of Nine Inch Nails/Depeche Mode concerts. The sound is 100 % awesome.
Just take the time and use the Shure online fit guide. The instructions that came with them have a misprint in regards to left and right. That is part of the problems I had at first with the fit.
Buy em yu will not be unhappy.
I wear for 2-3 hours a pop. No ear soreness.

  • Very nice and great noise-blocking too!

    By A3V1DYN19UXF4F on 2006-09-14
I have used the Shure e2c earphones (the previous model) for about 2 years now. Impressions:

(1)The standard rubber plugs are not comfortable, and don't give very much noise isolation. The foam plugs are very comfortable and really seal out the noise. Be prepared to be grossed out by all the earwax you didn't realize you still had in your ears.

    (2) Sound quality: 8/10. Not studio monitor quality, but very very good.

    (3) Isolation: 10/10. Seriously. Use these on a flight and you'll gladly take a seat next to a screaming infant. Only problem is that you see the flight attendant's mouth moving as she asks you if you want a Coke or 7up, but you won't be able to hear her.

    (4) When you first get them, you'll try putting them in your ears without success. Only after about the third try, all of a sudden the foam thingys go all the way inside, and you say, "So THAT'S how you put them in!" After that, piece of cake. You need to compress the foam just like you do with regular foam earplugs.

  • Skeptical no more

    By A1F4NPV8208YL4 on 2006-05-22
I have been skeptical of $99+ earbuds.... Still don't know if these are "noise canceling" so much as they are just "ear plugs". But as the other reviews mention, once you get the FIT - they are amazing. I never expected earbuds could sound like these. (I did have to adjust my ipod EQ for more bass - but I expected as much.) Well worth the price.

  • Consumers Beware!

    By A24AZ8BPWBMF6O on 2007-01-11
I have owned two pairs of these headphones in the past year in a half. The reason I have owned two is because the first pair stop functioning after 9 months and now, 5 months later after shure sent me a new pair of e2cs, the second pair has broken in the same exact fashion. Bad luck i thought, but after talking with two of my friends, owners of shure e2c's who experienced the same exact problem I did, I am convinced that the e2c design is fatally flawed. If you buy these headphones, you will experience the pristine and great sound quality that everyone raves about but only for 7-10 months before the right earbud stops functioning rendering your e2cs useless. I can only surmise that the reason there are not too many people complaining of the same problem is that people who do write reviews on amazon write them within 1-3 months of owning the product so when their product does break, they do not take the time to post or write about it online. Well, after my second pair e2c's broke and after consulting with my friends about the same problem, consumers have a right to know that Shure is distributing a faulty product. I really hope this email is an impetus for the people at Shure to finally redesign their earbuds and stop tarnishing their name with the e2cs. Thank you - rock on

  • Just okay

    By A17EO3JAWB6RLI on 2008-01-19
I've had these for 1 year so I have plenty of experience with them. Here are my comments. Firstly, they are not great for those who are looking for an alternative to the active noise canceling headsets (e.g. Bose). If you travel on planes, go with Bose or Sony active. If you workout in a gym or run, I do not recommend. The fidelity is okay and they provide excellent isolation from the gym's music, but the cord is just too long. They get caught on equipment and once when running, they got caught on a bicycle going the other direction (the wire bounces). The ear buds also fall out when running which is super annoying. Most likely due to sweating, motion, and gravity (the way they hang over your ear). I highly recommend these for the OFFICE or for STUDY. I'm not overly impressed on the sound quality. Yes, if you find the ear buds that fit perfectly and you jam them in your ears, the sound is great and the bass is deep. But if you are in motion, the buds tend to retract from your ear canal and the bass vanishes. If you like hip hop or music with a lot of base, i find that they deliver distortion on the lows. Not very pleasing. As soon as I lose these or damage them, i will be looking for alternatives. I bought these based upon other reviews at the time and the name brand, but will do more research (actually trying various ones out and returning them if i don't like them). I use this on an IPOD video 5th generation

There are some inconsistent reviews on the sound quality of these earphones, basically it comes down to how you like to listen to your music. If you like to press "bass Xpand" button on your stereo for that booming sound ,you may be dissapointed with the "flat" sound coming out of these earphones. Those of you who keep that "direct" button on on your amps will love the clean ,detailed sound of E2c.Remember that most music is in the midrange frequency.Listening to dance/trance or hip hop, I sometimes wish for deeper bass. But true bass is difficult to reproduce in small earphones. The illusion of deep bass in some cheap earphones is just that...an illusion. As for the fit and comfort I have no complaints. If youre not sure whether you'll like insert phones, get yourself a pair of foam ear plugs and try to wear them for a while. That will give you an indication of how you're going to tolerate them. The only discomfort comes from the wraped cords around my ears after few hours of listening.
The quality is excellent, the cord is long and the case is nice. These will outlast a cheap pair many times over.Recommended.

  • Horrible sound quality..
    By A3SAQRI70IOBTK on 2006-03-03
I bought these hoping that they were sound isolating so that I could listen to music on the train and not have to kill my ear drums trying to block out the sounds around me. These don't block outside sounds at all. I could have lived with that flaw and just viewed this purchase as an expensive "lesson learned" but the sound quality is horrendous!! I felt like I was listening to music through a tin can. I have a pair of Sony headphones that cost me $20 bucks and sound incredible compared to these. I tried every "ear sleeve" provided by the manufacturer and not one of them helped and yes, I did make sure I put them in correctly as per the manual (which is almost impossible!!). The only positive thing that I can say is that the carrying case was cute, which doesn't matter when you purchase a $100 pair of earphones. I want ear/headphones that provide great sound without killing my ear drums for a reasonable price that are comfortable and light weight to wear, and it would be awesome if outside sounds could be blocked. However I think I might be fantasizing about a product that doesn't exist. I guess I'll try some of the over the ear type headphones again, at least I won't be further damaging my ear drums (or at least accelerating it).

  • I concur

The E2c's seal up extremely well when the right plugs are applied. (I prefer the smallest size silicone plugs instead of the tougher plastic ones that come attached in-box.) And between these and the Ultimate Ears Super-fi 3's, the Shures are much more comfortable, easier to fit, and provide the best seal. (In fact, the seal is so good, not only will it make your head feel like it's going to implode, but you can also hear the creaking of the joints your neck when you turn it.) The Super-fi's are a bit better sounding (sounding less like in-ear monitors than other in-ear monitors, i.e.: a bit fuller in the mids) but they didn't knock my socks off the way the E2c's do. Vocals are clear, crisp, well-defined, and reproduced with passion unlike anything I'd heard from headphones --- even from my Sennheiser HD580s. I should mention though, that if you're used to the sound of circumaural (over-the-ear) headphones, as I am, the Shures still have a bit of that 'in-ear monitor' sound (like the music is being forced through a tiny tube directly into your ears) but they are nonetheless miles above anything the likes of which Sony could produce. Not bad for an entry-level product. I love these phones.

EDIT [7.6.06]: The foam eartips, though made to be disposable, are the most comfortable and best sounding, and eliminate that 'underwater' feeling the other tips generate.

  • Nice sound
    By A2I812JCBWATFM on 2006-05-08
I have these and the E3's. These fit better in my ears than the E3's. Both sound great. The E3's sound a little better but they were $99.00 more when I bought them. The E2's are just as good or better because of the fit.

  • Do not doubt the Noise Canceling capability
    By A2N4ER7BGMGMKP on 2006-11-12
Ok. So when I bought the Shure E2c my intentions where to just test them out and see if they were really noise cancelling then return them if they didnt work as advertised. $90.00 Dollars for a set of ear buds is a lot more than I was going to pay for them but after using them and putting them to the test I will keep them.
I first tested them against a crowd of people. No kidding once I put the ear buds in my ear and played music to the lowest level. I couldnt hear anything but the music. People tried talking to me but I couldnt hear them. Even after pausing the music I still had to take the ear buds out of my ear to be able to hear them clearly.

Second test was in a plane... again same result. I heard only music not the guy next to me snoring, not the plane engines.. shut I missed the meal being served bc I didnt hear the stuartess asking for what I wanted to drink and eat.

Third and fourth tests are the reason why I'm keeping this ear buds. First, I used a ramdom set of ear buds next to a running UH-60 Blackhawk (an Army helicopter) and I could hardly hear the music at the highest volume. Then I used the Shure E2c and I honestly couldn't not hear the helicopter running. I could feel the wind from the main rotor system but I did not hear noise. My volume level was surprisingly low and the music sounded great. I moved closer and closer and I even sat inside the running blackhawk and I was left speechless. These ear buds will leave you completely satisfied.

Make sure, however, that they fit you properly otherwise they will not work well. They should not hurt when you place them in your ears. If they do pick a smaller size ear fitting (they come with like 10 different sizes and types). If they are too loose go one size bigger. It takes a good 30 minutes to figure out which size works well but once you get them right you are done.

Overall, great product. 5 stars no doubt.

  • Simply Amazing
    By A17G55XH3WAJG3 on 2007-01-12
I use these headphones with the Iriver H320, before these i used sennheiser ear buds and the sony 71's, they sound good but are produced really cheap. I love intense bass and crisp highs and i had to lower my bass and treble settings when i switched to the Shures. I'm a drummer and i'm very particular when it comes to the sound quality and clarity of my music. These head phones deliver unmatched sound, clarity and stay in the ear, i'm curious to hear what the more expensive Shures sound like.

I read a lot of reviews on these headphones after i owned them for a year. For people to say they dont have bass must not have took 2 minutes and 30 seconds to try on the other tips(they come with 9 options for your convience). People who say that they broke in 9 months dont take care of their equipment. Patience is a virtue and always take care of what you got.

  • Great phones, but heed this WARNING
    By A8MAFHCL3NBES on 2007-04-06
I've used these phones for about a year now, mostly for hearing protection and music/radio while on my motorcycle. Earlier this year I took a month-long motorcycle tour in Mexico during which I wore them every day, all day, usually just using them as earplugs. They get top marks for comfort, and sound quality. I'd definitely buy them again if need be. Here's the warning: they come with a bad case. The case puts a sharp bend in the headphone wire and the wire will break at that bend. I managed to fix mine but I recommend you throw away the case and store the phones in a small bag or such. There's also a second warning: you must use the little mylar covers that keep water and ear gunk out of the phones. Shure sells spares when you're done with the dozen or so that come with the phones.

Update after 2 years: I'm about ready to throw the phones away now. First the wire broke near the left earpiece and I opened it up and fixed it and taped it shut. Then the wire broke near the right earpiece and I did the same. Now the wire's broken somewhere in the cord. What it comes down to is, these are pretty delicate phones. I still think they sound great and are very comfortable but I suggest you buy the extended warranty.

  • Listen Carefully!
    By A13A943ZWQVT0Z on 2007-08-23
Here's the deal with Shure E2 headphones. They have many options when it comes to comfort, so you can find your best fit. However, of the three options, the foam (like wearing earplugs that play music) has the best sound quality, and with three sizes hopefully (but not guaranteed) you will find one size comfortable enough.

The thing about the sound quality is you should ONLY buy them if you have an MP3 player or something with adjustable balance. These headphones have HORRIBLE balance (low bass, high treble), but, if you work with the equalizer on an iPod or other MP3 player, you can adjust to bass booster or rock settings to make the songs sound flawless and amazing. This truly brings out the quality of the headphones, although it is a little extra work.

Overall, if you're looking for a good pair of earbuds, these are the most risk-free, because you're NEARLY guaranteed comfort and (if you adjust the balance on your device) great sound. It just seems like earbuds are loved and hated by so many, since they totally depend on your preference for treble-bass balance and the size of your ears.

  • Shure Headphones
    By A2F4D0BFT65ZKC on 2006-02-27
I am content with the sound quality of these headphones. However, the product I ordered was "IN BLACK." I received the clear version of the E2c-n earphones, not the black version. I did not want to go through the hassle of sending the product back, especially since it took a week longer than the "2-day" shipping I requested.

  • Very uncomfortable
    By ATGHOT0MWNUIF on 2006-04-27
Tried them out, switched the buds a few times, very unhappy with the fit and comfort level. Immediate regret followed by return.

  • Nice, but...
    By A6MEE96SAR5QH on 2006-07-03
Several fittings privided but only the foam ear "plug" fittings seem to work for me. Unfortunately they will wear down in time and I will likey have to get a new set. Everyones ear is different so I can't imagine the other prefab fitting would work for many people. That leaves keep buying the foam inserts or get custom fittings made, either way it can be an expensive proposition. Sound is good as it isolates out all external noises. I don't have to raise the volume so much to drown out the other noises (helps to save the hearing). I was a little disappointed they are fairly bigger and stickout more than "earbud" style headphones and I can't comfortably use them under my helmet when I ride.

  • Great Buy
    By A1JK1EFCZBQRE6 on 2006-06-18
I was sceptical at first due to the somewhat mixed reviews I read about fit. But I have had no problems with fit and think the sound is great. These are the most expensive ear bud phones I have bought to-date and think they are worth ever penny.

  • Everything I'd hoped for
    By A344KTMZV7LDQV on 2006-06-26
Amazing sound, great fit. I was used to "in ear" headphones already so there was no issue of discomfort. Great deal on a great headphones.

  • Amost perfect...
    By A1EM9D7L440ZAA on 2006-08-25
I purchased these headphones after reading another reviewer's comments. She was a medical transcriptionist, as am I, and her very positive review prompted my own purchase. I have to say that they really do isolate outside noise. You really can work undisturbed and oblivious to almost all outside noise. That's the good part... the only critisism I have, and I do realize that it is the nature of the beast and NOT the fault of these headphones per se, but they are quite awkward to put on and take off, especially if, like me, you transcribe in a hospital and people need to ask you questions or if you need to be able to hear announcements, etc. If you can sit undisturbed, THESE ARE GREAT! But if you will need to take them on and off a few times, well, that's a pain. So, depending on your personal use, I would say that overall, these are very excellent for their sound isolation and even seem to amplify whatever you are listening to.

  • Great Sound If Properly Inserted
    By A272Y6VXIMOKSF on 2007-02-11
There has been disagreement in these reviews about the quality of sound from the Shure E2c earphones, in particular whether there is sufficient bass. In my experience, if they are inserted in your ears properly, these earphones produce plenty of bass that sounds deep and undistorted. However, if they are not inserted properly, there is almost no bass and the earphones sound toy-like and laughable.

You need to experiment to find out how best to insert these earphones properly for your own ears. Having struggled with this myself, I now believe that you should probably use the amount of bass as the ultimate guide to proper insertion. You have to accept on faith that once the earphones are inserted properly into your ear canals the bass will be unmistakable. With this endpoint in mind, I suggest following the included instructions carefully for how to run the wires, insert the earphones, and try the different earpieces. Still, it is possible that not everyone can find a way to make these earphones work.

I would give these earphones 5 stars for the sound quality when properly inserted, since the sound seems full, accurate, and balanced. However, I have only given them 4 stars because of the difficulty of discovering how to insert them properly, even though I would guess that this is as much an issue with the in-the-ear-canal design as it is an issue with these particular earphones.

The other two major issues raised in these reviews are discomfort and durability. With respect to discomfort, I can only speak personally, but I am fine with the comfort of these earphones when properly inserted. I actually like the secure feeling that the earphones are not always on the verge of falling out as you exercise.

I have only owned the earphones for about a week so I cannot comment on durability, which may indeed be an issue.

  • I love these earphones
    By A3A62SPQAKGCCX on 2007-02-15
I have had these for about 2 months now and really love them. It's hard to imaging how good the next version up of these would sound considering how good these sound.
If you like pounding base then these may not be for you. They have really good sounding base but they don't overdue it. Very naturally sounding.
The only reason I didn' give them a 5 rating is that it takes a little while to find the right fit. IF you don't have the right fit they are horrible.
Once I got the right fit, I could tell immeditaly. It blocked the outside noise and the sound came alive. I like to go to the local Starbucks and drink coffee, read a book and listen to my Ipod. These work great to block out the ambient noise while having great sound.
    I recomend these!!!

one note, they are like earplugs so if you don't like something in your ear you might not like them.

  • Fit like driving gloves
    By AM4DTY900RTLV on 2007-07-26
$100.00 for earbuds?! I'm no audiophile, so I bought some $20.00 clip on buds, they play music and they stay on my ears. Well the dang things hurt. I'd just invested in $400.00 in an I-Pod and accessories and started to rethink quality phones. You can tell by looking at the Shures that they should work better, theres simply more stuff there. I take college classes and am easily annoyed at cell phone yappers when I'm doing the last minute cram, so sound isolation sounds real good, quiet actually. I got noise canceling phones but they only work for steady droning noises.

I've been aware of Shures reputation for many years with musicians, so I didn't doubt the clarity and range of sound would be there. But I've never had a set of buds stay in my ears 5 minutes, even the `expensive' $30.00 ones I'd tried and returned. I didn't wanna blow $100.00 on buds just to have them fall out of my ears and into the gears of my mountain bike. No problem, they fit like a glove and stay on just as well. Check Shures site to see how they're applied and you'll understand. Have you ever worn those foam earplugs? That's what they feel like if you use the foam sleeves that everybody recommends.

Enough babble. These buds are noticeably sturdy, have excellent clarity and range in all forms of music (ok, I didn't listen to opera, who does?). They fit like a pair of driving gloves and I will save $$$ as I won't be experimenting with any more phones or buds, these are the ones. Ohhh, forgot, I'm now an audiophile, I discovered what they're hearing!

  • Amazing Sound Quality and Accessories
    By A1CS7RTGKP83BW on 2006-09-05
Fantastic headphones. I switched to these after my Sony MDR-EX51LP headphones died after only 9 months!

    Pros:
-Sound quality is much better. This is probably due to the higher quality of the phones and the better (in-ear) seal made by the phones. Bass and mid-range are a lot richer with these headphones.
-Cords are thicker than the Sonys and the cords tangle less. The actual earpieces feel stronger too.
-Lots of extra ear plugs (even professional-style foam ones). I went with the black softer rubber. Nice to have options.
-Carrying case is nice. I don't use it, but would if I travelled more. For now, I keep the extra ear plugs in there.
-Warranty -- I believe these have a 2-3 year (Sony had 90 days!).

    Cons:
-Cord-behind-the-ear style is a little hard to get used to. I've tried other ways, but this seems to be the best way to keep them in you ears.
-Differentiating between the left and right headphones is not very simple. You have to consult the manual to see that the darker one is right and the clear one is left. Very difficult to figure out in the dark!

These cons are more minor things that irk me than product flaws. Overall, great product!

  • E2C-N, a buds review, and how I got the bass out.
    By A1FA1HA45BARA4 on 2006-11-23
I bought the e2c-n together with the bose triport ie. Both excellent earbuds although the bose excel somewhat in overall sound quality. At first I found that a "perfect fit" did not equate with perfect sound. I got good isolation with the rubber tip but couldn't help but feel that the bass was lacking. I then tried out the foam tips, and voila the bass was there. The foams aid in creating the isolation seal by expanding once they are placed in the ear canal - the rubbers and PVC do not. For this reason the foams are probably easier to fit than the other 2 since you can compress them and get them in snug no matter what your ear size.

As with the bose, I had to adjust the equalizer on my ipod a bit until I got the buds to sound the way I liked (Piano setting).

The E2c definitely provide clear highs and lows - I was actually able to hear brass players in a classical piece breathe. I've used shure products as a musician and am happy to say that they have yet to dissapoint.

Oh and WOW - these things are really good at blocking out sound. No more going deaf from blasting non-isolating headphones on the subway while listening to kids screaming. Ipod volume setting hardly reaches 50% and that's with "sound-check" on!

  • Nice sound, good background noise control
    By AE0BMVEVVU6DQ on 2006-12-01
First and foremost, beware! Have you ever put any ear plugs in your ears? If not, stick your fingers in both ears to clog them up. This is how the "Sound Isolating" feature works on these earphones. Yes, they reduce the background noise, but they amplify body noises like swallowing, chewing gum, or the ~clunk~ of your feet. So, even if the volume is low, you should not use these anywhere that you need to be aware of your surroundings (i.e. public road).

Like others have said, these things can hurt your ears if you don't take the time to select the proper ear foam. Once the proper size is fitted, they stay snug in your ears. Great for running/jogging - just make sure to do it on a closed track or a treadmill and *not* anywhere that requires you to pay attention to your surroundings.

The sound is very good and can go very loud. Since they plug into your ears and have the "Sound Isolators" between the speakers and the rest of the world outside, bystanders can not hear your music or tell if you have your tunes cranked up high. It can be entertaining to turn your device off from time to time to easedrop, while those around you still think you are rocking out! :)

  • cord gets ridgid
    By A2CV2CH3J9GKAL on 2006-12-17
I bought a pair of these back in march 2006 and now its dec 2006, 9 months later the plastic sheath around the cord is ridgid and cracking around the ears and the bare wire is exposed. I expect earbuds to last more than 9 months when you're paying a premium. Luckily these carry a 2yr warranty. As soon as the new pair comes in, I'll be auctioning those and purchasing a another pair of buds that don't have the wire wrapping around the ear.

  • Excellent sound, but the cord kills it
    By A2CH6FUYGYDV4I on 2006-12-19
I can confirm what a previous reviewer stated -- the cord gets rigid over time, and eventually cracks, exposing bare wire.

They sound excellent. I wouldn't call myself an audiophile, but certianly an enthusiast (I can tell the different between $500 and $1500 speakers, if not $20,000 and $50,000 speakers). Something about the shape of my ear makes traditional earbuds hurt terribly, so I fell in love with so-called canalphones like the Sony Fontopias. In fact, they were the first I ever had. Not as good as a proper set of cans, but certainly the best portables I'd ever used. Problem -- those silicone sleeves disappear in no time. I went through three pairs before I discovered these -- bought them, despite costing three times as much, because I was able to get additional sleeves. Ironically, it's the ONLY pair of canalphones I've ever owned whose sleeves NEVER disappeared. Not sure if it's because they actually came with a usable case, which I actually made some use of, or because they seem to have a tighter fit, but that was definitely nice.

The sound quality, as others have said, is good. Better than the Sony's, I think, though I was never able to do a side-by-side. The jack is sturdy, but a bit large for my tastes -- doesn't fit well with today's sveldt electronics. Minor complaint, though. No, it's the cord that gets me. Well, the way you have to stick them in and wrap the cords up and around your ears kinda bugged me, but mostly because the cord itself is stiff. Even new, it's stiff. But over time it gets worse. Eventually, and apparently I'm far from alone in this, it gets so stiff that it cracks and splits. I have bare wire and uncomfortable plastic edges right against my ear. I've stopped using them because of this. It's really a shame. Despite their relative clunkiness, I really liked these 'phones, especially the availability of replacement sleeves.

  • Great sound but very delicate.
    By A18QOASFGSQEPF on 2006-12-26
Bought an E2C, lasted a year and a half(back when it was only a one year warranty). One side started intermittently going bad, then could no longer hear out of it. Bought an E3C, lasted less than a year, now can barely hear out of the left side. If I can find the box and receipts, I'll turn it in to get replaced. If not, oh well. Love the sound and the isolation but I've paid over $300 for both pairs and have two broken earphones.

I recieved these about a week ago and because I am a big guy I placed the largest covers on the earbuds and the sound was terrible. I packed them up to be returned, however, tonight I was browsing Amazon for a replacement and guess what? By accident I was about to order the same earphones again. I realized I was going to order the same as what I planned to return and decided to give them a second chance. I put smaller covers on the earbuds and they work perfect. Awesome sound, perfectly reproduced. I will keep them! I am glad I gave them a second chance.

great and wide range of sound spectrum reproduction, very good isolation even when exercising. Highly recommended.
