The Greatest! By A1IVUNY0GM4C3Z on 2006-09-14
1. Don't Forget About Us- (A+) Oh so now Mariah finally gets put on a NOW complication. This songs the greatest, beter than "We Belong Together," because it doesn't sample anything. (#1)
2. Stickwitu- (A+) Sweetest most beautiful song, great rythmn too. (#5)
3. Grillz- (A+) The best rap song ever, and that means a lot since I hate rap music. (#1)
4. Run It!- (A) Great dancable song, even though Chris's voice can get on your nerves. (#1)
5. My Humps- (A) Great song, but not as good as "Don't Phunk With my Heart." Fergie can get annoying though. (#3)
6. If It's Lovin' That You Want- (A+) Beautiful Carribean style song, very fun. (#36)
7. Fresh Azimiz- (A-) Another great rap song. (#23)
8.Lean Wit It, Rock Wit It- (C) Okay, kinda dry. (#7)
9. Stay Fly- (A-) Brillantly Done rap song. (I think somewhere in the 10's)
10. I'm Sprung- (C+) Kinda cool, but still dry and annoying. (Somewhere in the 10's)
11. One Wish- (B+) Pretty song, pretty good vocals too. ( Somewhere in the 10's)
12. Because of You- (A+) Beautiful, kinda sad, great music and vocals and lyrics. (#7)
13. Unwritten- (A+) Great well-written, beautiful vocals and music. (#5)
14. Photograph- (A) Great song, great lyrics and music. (#2)
15. Dirty Little Secret- (A-) It's a fun rock track. (#8)
16. Dance, Dance- (A-) Great rock rock, but a little annoying. (#9)
17. Who I Am Hates Who I've Been- (A) Brillant rock song, love the music. (#58)
18. Dare- (A+) Funky electro garage song, way better than "Feel Good Inc," despite its low charting position. (#87 I think!)
19. Honky Tonk Badonkadonk- (C) Kinda cool beat for a country song, bad lyrics though, and mediocre vocals. (#33 I think!)
20. Everytime We Touch- (A+) Uses the chorus from a Scottish song of the same name. Brillantly done dance-trance track. The dance anthem of 2006. (#10)
One of the better Nows By A1EHIB9KOUC6W on 2006-04-08
Now 21 has a broad variety of music. This is probably the most diverse of all the Now CDs. Mariah Carey shows her amazing vocals in the chart topping R&B hit, Don't Forget About Us. This song is fantastic, and it fits Mariah perfectly. Stickwitu by the Pussycat Dolls has a catchy melody, and it's very enjoyable to listen to. Nelly's Grillz is a fun song to rap along to, even if youre not a rap fan. Chris Brown brings us to the dance floor with his number one hit, Run It! Chris is a good singer for a 16 year-old kid. The Black Eyed Peas hit, My Humps seems to be one of the weaker songs on the album, and some people might find the lyrics offensive. Rihanna's fun song If It's Lovin That You Want, gets people of all ages to sing along. Bow Wow's Fresh Azimiz is enjoyable for a while, but after two or three times of listening to it, it gets old. Dem Franchize Boyz's Lean Wit It, Rock Wit It has a nice beat, but it's very good overall. This is probably the worst song on the album. Stay Fly is not unique, and it's very similar to most rap songs already released. T-Pain has an amazing singing voice in comparision to his speaking voice. I think it would be better if he goes around singing all the time instead of talking. His vocals are good, but they aren't great. Ray J. could be the next Usher. His One Wish, has good vocals, and a good melody. This is a song you will want to listen to mosre than a few times. Kelly Clarkson has always been an outstanding artist. Because Of You is an absolutely flawless performance, and Kelly singing it is stunning. This is by far the best song on the album. Natasha Bedingfield has a beautiful and distinct voice. Unwritten is a very catchy song, and most Natasha does a good job with it. Nickelback and All American Rejects both give good performaces with their songs Photograph and Dirty Little Secret. Fall Out Boy singing Dance, Dance, is fun to listen to, but like Bow Wow's song, this one gets old after a while. I am new to Relient K, and what I have heard from them so far, I liked, and Who I Am Hates Who I've Been confirms it. Dare by The Gorillaz is not a great song, but it's fun to listen to. Honkey Tonk Bodonkadonk may be offensive to women, and it isn't that good of a song either. At least it brings diversity to the album with a country song, but if I had to choose between My Humps and this song for which is better, I would choose My Humps. Cascada is a great singer, and this song is one the few songs that get stuck into your head easily, and you'd be happy about it. Although there are some songs that aren't so good, Ray J., Chris, Nickelback, All American Rejects, Relient K, Pussycat Dolls, Cascada, Natasha, Mariah, and Kelly definitely make this album worth buying.
Great By on 2006-10-09
This CD is not bad. When I first played a Marriah Carey song came on so I kind of regretted buying the CD. As the CD moved on it started to get better because a rather dancy song came on by the "The Pussycat Dolls" sang a song called "Stickiwu" came on. Other songs such as "Dirty Little Secret" by "The All American Rejects" and "Unwritten" by Natasha Beddingfield were good too. Nickleback was a little rusty throated on "Photograph" because the lead singers voice is scrachty. "Dare" by "Gorrilaz" had a great tune so over all I give Now 21 an 8 1/2. Bottom line is this is a good CD and if you wanna buy it you go for it!
Great CD By on 2006-06-15
I got this recently, cuz I liked most of the songs on it. I am very pleased with it. This series is great to get copies of those songs you love on the radio, but don't wanna waste money on tons of CDs.
Now this is what I call music!! By A2K3L0DOPQQ697 on 2006-06-26
As you could probably tell by my review for Now 19, my opinion of the Now series hasn't been all that high. Now that I have the Now 21 CD, however, I am starting to change my opinion of the franchise. I pretty much liked every song on here, but here are my top picks:
1) Relient K- Who I Am Hates Who I've Been: Quite frankly, this song had to grow on me, mainly cause I never got to listen to it all the way through. Now, I can't stop listening to this song. I love Relient K, not only cause they're a Christian band, but because they actually sound good. This song is just proof of that.
2) Dem Franchise Boyz- Lean Wit It, Rock Wit It: For obvious reasons, I like this song: an infectious beat, irresistible chorus. etc.
3) Fall Out Boy- Dance, Dance: I really haven't listened to Fall Out Boy very much, but will probably end up buying one of their CDs because of this song. Love this one.
4) Chris Brown- Run It: Not quite sure why I like this song, I just do.
5) Nickeback- Photograph: Another classic from Nickelback, albeit an overplayed one. Here is where the 1/2 star drop comes in, though. For reasons I can't explain, the makers decided to cut out the first part of the second verse ("Remember the old arcade..."); it really didn't affect the quality of the sound, but I am really pissed that they cut out part of a great song like Photograph.
6) Black Eyed Peas- My Humps: Again, for obvious reasons.
7) Natasha Bedingfield- Unwritten: One of my favorites from her; a bit overplayed, though.
8) Trace Adkins- Honky Tonk Badonkadonk: Ripped off on a Pastor Troy song, Honky Tonk Badonkadonk is a classic tale of a country singer staring at a girl's stuff at a bar. Probably my third favorite song on here.
9) Bow Wow- Fresh Azimiz: Love this song, but I'm not quite sure who does the one-line guest work on the chorus; I'm thinking it's Eminem, but again, not sure.
Frankly, I would have loved it if they would have put some Fort Minor or new Evanescence songs on here. Nevertheless, I really did enjoy this CD, despite the Photograph incident. A compilaton truly worthy of its name, completely deserving of my 4 and 1/2 star rating.

Overall, I would say this album is worth buying for the many good songs on it. NOW 20 was also very good.
- THERE IS SOMETHING RARE ON THIS CD !
     By on 2006-04-04
THE SURPRIZE ON THIS CD TO ME WAS THAT THERE IS A MARIAH CAREY
SONG ON IT.
I HAVE BEEN LISTENING TO MARIAH CAREY SINCE 91`. AND I HAVE NEVER
SEEN HER ON A COMPILATION CD OUTSIDE OF SOMETHING MADE BY MTV OR VH1.
MARIAH CAREY IS LIKE MADONNA & PRINCE AND NEVER PUTS HER SONGS ON A CD UNLESS IT HAS HER NAME ON IT.I WOULD LOVE TO KNOW HOW THEY GOT HER TO DO IT.
{NOW 21} IS VERY HEAVY ON THE R&B/HIP~HOP SIDE WHICH IS GREAT BECAUSE THAT IS WHAT IS RULING THE AIR~WAVES.
EVERYONE FROM THE BLACK/EYED/PEAS TO NELLY,BOW WOW,MARIAH CAREY.
THE NEW VERSION OF THE SPICE GIRLS:{PUSSYCAT DOLLS}.
AND THE NEW MULTI~GRAMMY WINNER {KELLY CLARKSON}.
AND IF YOU ARE A FAN OF ROCK;YOU CAN NEVER GO WRONG WITH NICKELBACK.THERE IS THE TECHNO/NEW~WAVE TYPE SONG:EVERY TIME WE TOUCH BY:CASCADA;THEY ARE NEW TO ME.
THE ONLY REASON I GAVE THIS 4 STARS IS BECAUSE OF THE COUNTRY SONG BY TRACE ADKINS.WHY DO THEY PUT COUNTRY SONGS ON {NOW}.
IF YOU LISTEN TO THE RADIO STATIONS OR MTV & VH1 THEY WILL PLAY EVERY SONG ON THE CD EXCEPT COUNTRY;IT JUST SEEMS OUT OF PLACE.
IF {NOW} WANTS COUNTRY THEY SHOULD DO A CD WITH ALL COUNTRY.NOT MIX IT WITH RAP & ROCK.OUTSIDE OF THAT [NOW 21] IS ANOTHER GREAT CD TO ADD TO YOUR COLLECTION OF THE NOW SERIES.
[NOW] PUT THIS CD IN YOUR PLAYER AND TURN THE VOLUME ON MAX!

- Hashed songs :-l
     By A24ZFFRQ4MG3XL on 2006-04-10
This is a good compilation - but - you must remember that the majority of these songs have been played and played and played and played over and over and over on the radio to the point of exhustion. Who wants to hear these still once the radio is switched off. The collection is great but the amount of times a human can possibly hear the same songs over again without jumping off a cliff is not endless.
- I would remake this CD

- Now! 21, It's A Good One.
     By A2U7OJFS7JJR78 on 2006-04-05
We've waited longer than usual for Now! 21, usually Now! Cd's are released in March, but there was Now! #1's, which was released in January(that Cd I did not review, no need to). Back to Now! 21, it's a pretty good collection this time around, much more than Now! 20, but that was good too. On 21 we have the returning artists, such as Black Eyed Peas, Rhianna, Nickelback(although they last appeared on Now! 14 with "Someday" off of "Long Road"), they appear on 21 with the #2 hit "Photograph", Kelly Clarkson make her second straight appearance, with "Because Of You"(#7), Fall Out Boy also are back with "Dance,Dance"(#9). We also have first timers, Trace Adkins, (who represence country, no Keith Urban this time, which is sort of a welcome change) "Honky Tonk Badonkadonk"(#1 country, #30 Hot 100), Mariah Carey makes her initial apperance with "Don't Forget About Us"(#1), also there is All American Rejects with the ever catchy "Dirty Little Secret"(#9, great song), and certainly not last "Unwritten" from Natasha Bedingfield, which currently rests at #6, I absolutely love this song, I have waited too long to have this song on a CD, and I finally have it. As a whole, Now! 21 is a good CD, of course there are songs that I am not going to like, but I can overlook those songs, because there are alot of good songs to balance out the bad. The CD receives an A-, which is one of the better marks for a Now! CD, in the line of 4,5,6,7,9,10,11,14,15,16,17,18,19,20 and now 21.

- Vol. 21
     By A3Q1FVRV0CRYTH on 2006-07-20
Comeback star Mariah Carey opens the album with a highlight 'Don't Forget About Us'. I can't get enough of Mariah's latest album, it's freaking brilliant, and I'm so glad to see one of my favorite artist's finally back where she belongs...on top! Speaking of 'on top' there are a few stars that started there, like Chris Brown who with 'Run It' became an instant favorite and is still riding that song for all it's worth. Kelly Clarkson is another who is on top of her game right now, and 'Because of You', while not as strong as some of Breakaway's other singles, is still a great ballad and showcases her amazing pipes.
Nelly and Bow Wow steal the rap spotlight, but that's mostly because Dem Franchize Boyz & Three 6 Mafia kinda suck. Sorry, but 'Lean Wit It...' is just annoying. And speaking of rap, can we include Trace Adkins for his inspired 'Honky Tonk Bodonkadonk'...PUKE, gag me with a spoon! I hate this song...Now, Black Eyed Peas, while not serving up rap give us one of my favorite stupid songs...'My Humps' which is just really fun to sing.
Rihanna and Pussycats show up again and work it out. I love Rihanna's island vibe (but she's authentic so it's even better) and I actually dig T-Pains 'I'm Sprung' even though I prefer 'I'm in Love with a Stripper'. Ray J. is a bit whiney, I actually didn't even know it was him when I heard it, but all in all I can listen to it. I LOVE 'UNWRITTEN' but that goes with the territory.
As far as the rock is concerned, All American Rejects and Relient K can battle for the crown, for both their songs are killer. I think I lean a little more towards 'Dirty Little Secret' but you never can tell. Love 'Dance Dance' and hate 'Photograph' but really really dig Gorillaz 'Dare' but I wouldn't classify it as rock. I will say it takes the crown as my favorite song here.
Oh yeah, and Cascada is just the most obnoxious crap I've ever heard. Talk about a headache!

     By AXZTWJQI9R97V on 2006-04-24
Like a lot of reviewers have pointed out; these songs have been played 1,00 times in the U.S. and the ones you haven't heard you probably don't want to hear.
As for me; I live in Norway, Europe and I love the NOW compilation as this is released at the same time these songs actually start getting airplay over here.
This CD mostly has dance-club numbers as that's what's been hot on the charts for a while and I do prefer something you can dance to as it grows old much slower than plain pop tunes do.
Out of 20 songs there are 4 (#10, #11, #13, #17) songs I haven't heard of/dislike. Definitely worth your (and my) money.
- Finally, some real music
     By on 2006-04-15
You pop fans are gonna hate me for this. Finally, some real music is put on these CD's. Pop sux! I hate kelly clarkson and fall out boy, Im a three 6 mafia fan and it's about time they get noticed by the Now CD stuff. The all time BEST songs on this album are Grillz, Run it, Fresh AZIMIZ, Lean wit it, Rock wit it, Stay fly (the best song all year), Im sprung, One wish and Dare. I hope to see more three 6 mafia and Chris brown on the next CD. Rap & R/B are the best music, f*** Pop.
- One of Now's Betters But Not Matching Up To 7, 9, 11, 13, 16, or 19
     By A11D1KHM7DVOQK on 2006-04-08
The CD starts off with Mariah Carey's "Don't Forget About Us", one of`her minor hits when you think of the massive hits "We Belong Together" (9 weeks at #1 on Pop Airplay and #1 on Billboard 2005 year-end chart) and Shake It Off (7 weeks at #1 Pop Airplay and one of the top three gainers), but nonetheless it is a decent song and it charted fair enough; however without the bigger hits on earlier Nows has a sour taste at the end. "Stickwitu" comes next, one of the group's only good tracks and a massive hit during the winter. The song combines jazz and R&B and the Pussycat Dolls use all of their limited vocal range to produced a fair song. Next is Nelly "Grillz". The song has an interesting and addictive beat but the sound lyrics are pitiful "I might be grilled up nicely, in my white tee, on south beach..". The next song is "Run It", a fun dance/hip-hop song that warrants more than a few more listens, as well as one of 2005 and 2006's biggest tracks. The lyrics aren't amazing but good enough for this genre. "My Humps" comes next, an awful track but a definite guilty pleasure especially since it has one of the most addictive beats since "Drop It Like It's Hot" and Fergie says it all "My humps, my lovely lady lumps, check it out." Rihanna's more R&B track (comparing "Pon De Replay") "If It's Lovin' That You Want" has a fairly decent beat and so-so lyrics "If it's lovin that you want, you should make me your girl", but it's definitely incomparable to her current single "SOS", a definite pick for Now 22. The next song "Fresh Azimiz" is pure torture, the beat is lacking in any creativity and the lyrics are ridiculous at best "You ain't fresh as I'm is."; and azimiz meaning as-I'm-is, which is incorrect English to start with (Fresh as I am). The next song from Dem Franchize Boyz, "Lean Wit It, Rock Wit It", comes nowhere near their last single "I Think They Like Me", but it is still a guilty pleasure from it's beat. The lyrics are mediocre, the chorus has a choice of only five words, go figure. "Stay Fly" has a very interesting beat and is one of the better rap songs of the year. T-Pain (Tallahassee Pain)'s "I'm Sprung" is barely worth mentioning since it's mediocre at best. The entire production is basic and lacks in any creativity and even a few of the poor quality rap songs before on this CD had better beats. His vocals are obviously computerized and enhanced. The lyrics..."I'm sprung, she got me, got me doing things I'll never do"...enough said. Ray J's "One Wish" has minor appeal to most, his vocals are monotonous, his lyrics are repetitive, and the beat is nothing impressive. The next song saves the CD and is almost worth the purchase, Kelly Clarkson's "Because of You", which is one of the most powerful ballads in some time, and it was also #1 on Pop Airplay for 9 Weeks (not straight weeks though, "Gold Digger" stopped it's growth for a little bit). The lyrics are pretty impressive, "Because of you, I'll never stray too far from the sidewalk, Because of you I'll play on the safe side so I don't get hurt", while they don't look too special in typing you can hear her vocal emotions through the entire song (Heck, you should watch the music video for this song, I was crying.). Afterwards is UK's Britney Spears without the garbage production and better vocals, heck you probably can't compare her to Britney, she has a still of her own. Natasha Bedingfield's "Unwritten" is a pretty decent song, she can sing excellently and give out most of her vocal range, and the lyrics are decent enough. The beat is a pop/R&B crossover. Nickelback's "Photograph" is next and it's definitely a song better taken in small doses. It's more than annoying to her this song too often, but if you don't hear it often, it's a fairly decent song, mainly about past times. The guitars are pretty good in this song as well. Next is All American Rejects's "Dirty Little Secret", a pop-rock song that's addictive enough to keep your foot taping. The lyrics are pretty elementary "I'll keep you my dirty little secret, don't tell anyone or you'll be just another regret.", but the guitars and drum beat are good enough to keep it an above average song. Next is Fall Out Boy with an interesting concept, dance and rock mixed together, suprisingly it works. The guitars and beat are maybe overly addictive, and silly and clever lyrics that make you smile every once in awhile makes this a great rock track. If you like Fall Out Boy, you should check out some indie bands such as Plain White T's and Panic! At The Disco; you might be surprised. Next is Relient K's "Who I Am Hates Who I've Been" is a lacking song, the lyrics are decent but it sounds like they just kept adding guitars to make a hard rock sound, which doesn't work nor is it for them, and it wasn't a big hit to begin with. The next track, Gorillaz's "Dare", very much makes up for the last track and is one of Now 21's best songs. The track combines dance, rock, and rap, and makes it into a smash song. Unfortunately it wasn't much of a hit so I can't give it full credit, but I still give Now props for putting this on regardless. The next song is Trace Adkins, a definite no-no since it doesn't belong in this complication. It was a big hit so I will give it credit, but I can't "really" rate it since it doesn't belong and I really do dislike country as a whole. The last song ends with a strong note, Cascada's "Everytime We Touch", which is similar to D.H.T.'s "Listen To Your Heart". The beat is pretty intense and should take you on a ride through dance and techno.
Overall, Now 21 contains mostly hits, while some of the hits aren't good songs to begin with (it's winter, pop's worst season), if you get past the low quality rap and a few other annoying tracks, you should find a winner in there somewhere.
- Love it!
     By A3TP92BRJDNOCV on 2007-01-11
If you like current top 40 hits, this is a great pick. My kids and I all love it and sing along in the car! Its great to enjoy and recognize nearly every song on the cd as opposed to buying a cd by one artist and knowing maybe 1 or 2 songs.
- now, vol. 22 looks to be a good collection & investment but.....
     By on 2006-06-17
there are some questionable choices on here. about 5 tracks estimated!!!. check on it, miss new booty, poppin' my collar, i'm in luv wit a stripper, & tonight i wanna cry sould'nt be on here. i would of replaced check on it with robin thicke's "wanna love you girl", and i would of replaced miss new booty, poppin my collar, & i'm in luv wit a stripper with busta rhyme's "touch it(remix)", t.i.'s "why u wanna", & pussycat dolls "beep". jamie foxx's "unpredictable" should of been on here as well. i can certainly do without keith urban's tonight i wanna cry. that should of been replaced with something else, like afi's "miss murder" or red hot chili pepper's "dani california". as a matter of fact, both of those should of been added to the list. other than that, this disc is good and well worth the time & money. get it.

- *yawn* So tell me, WHY do we need this album?
     By A25V0OBVNYYTJD on 2006-05-20
Well, this album is kind of pointless. All you have to do is turn on a radio and you can hear most of these songs. With the exception of "Dare", "Fresh AZIMIZ" (Just listened to it. I wonder why I even bothered.), "Everytime We Touch", and "Who I am Hates Who I've Been", you have probably heard all of it.
Individual grades:
"Don't Forget About Us": B. Mariah puts a good song and decent lyrics together to create a catchy but slightly annoying song.
"Stickwitu": B-. I was surprised to hear this coming from the Dolls, but I think it's overplayed and limited in its goodness.
"Grillz": D. I think that this song is overplayed and OVERSUNG. Where I go to school, people always sing "They call me George Foreman cause I'm selling everybody grillz" and quite frankly, I have no idea why people want to sing a lower mediochre-class song.
"Run It!": A-. Catchy, awesome, and good though slightly overplayed. It's good to wake up to in the morning and is great for the awesome Chris Brown.
"My Humps": C-. Catchy, overplayed, oversung, tiring. Though it is very catchy and everybody seemed to sing it, I think that it's because it stays in your head and forces you to sing it.
"If It's Lovin' That You Want": B. It's better than "Pon De Replay" and sounds good, but that's about it.
"Fresh AZIMIZ": F. I think this song belongs on "Now That's what I call Stupid (Fill in number)".
"Lean Wit It, Rock Wit It": D. It's a catchy song, but it's very annoying and I don't see the point.
"Stay Fly": D-. Stay Go-o-o-o-o-o-o-one. Please.
"I'm Sprung": C. Not bad, but not good.
"One Wish": C+. It's good, but after a few times hearing it, it gets old.
"Because Of You": A+. It's flawless. It's the perfect ballad because Kelly's voice is awesome and it says so much in the course of a few minutes.
"Unwritten": A+. It's SO awesome, catchy, and I can't help but sing it.
"Photograph": C. It rings true to high school, but it's annoying after the millionth time listening to it.
"Dirty Little Secret": B. It's a good song but I like "Move Along" Better.
"Dance Dance": A. It's quirky, unique, and a good song.
"Who I Am Hates Who I've Been": B. It's not played much and I hadn't heard it until today. I think it's good for a song like this, but I don't like the way it's presented too much.
"Dare": B-. Unique, extremely quirky, and typical Gorillaz. I hadn't heard it and think it deserves a lot more airplay than "Photograph".
"Honky Tonk Badonkadonk": D. It's catchy, played a lot, and says the same thing over and over again about a woman's butt.
"Everytime We Touch": B+. It's catchy, unique, and not played much. Why are people not playing a good song like this?
OVERALL GRADE: B. The songs are OK, but not all of them are excellent. Older Nows were better.

- Everything that is wrong with the music industry
     By AJEO5QI4VL76P on 2006-06-19
Do we really need these compilations? Every radio station in America plays these songs every hour, over and over and over again. Not to mention their endless display on MTV. The worst part is that these actually top the charts every time and go at least triple platinum, which just encourages the record companies to keep releasing these, driving artists who actually put passion and creativity into their music further and further into obscurity.
So do yourself a favor and listen to a college radio station or any other non-commercial radio for your music, this is just the clearest example of big corporations telling you what to listen to and purchase.
And if you must have these songs, just download them for free on a Peer to Peer, no need to pump more money into this big corporate scheme.

I LOVE THE NOW SERIES BUT NOT NOW 21. NOW 21 IS TOO MUCH RAP. I LIKE NELLY "GRILLZ" BUT NONE OF THE OTHER RAP ON THIS CD. AND I THINK IT'S MESSED UP THAT ONLY ONE COUNTRY SONG IS ON THRERE. NOW USED TO BE ALL POP LIKE 'NSYNC AND BACKSTREET BOYS. WHAT HAPPENED?

"NOW 21" offers a mixed blessing: it DOES contain many huge hits, yet on the flip side they are not exactly THE best tracks late '05/early '06 had to offer. That's not to say that singles like "Stickwitu", "One Wish" and "Who I Am Hates Who I've Been" are bad per say; they just don't seem like the kinds of tunes we'll be humming even a year from now. That aside, this album promises hits and delivers exactly that, including five number ones ("Don't Forget About Us", "Stickwitu", "Grillz", "Run It!" and "Because Of You"). One of the album's most beneficial qualities it that it always keeps thing moving, thus we never become bored at any point. The general programming of the disc follows the winning blueprint "NOW" has followed the past few years: open with the urban sounds, head into pop, close with rock and the token country track (Trace Adkins replaces Keith Urban this time):
(1) Mariah Carey "Don't Forget About Us" A. Just like "We Belong Together" this is a terrific R&B ballad, but don't make the mistake of thinking it recycles that great tune. This is totally different with its own heartbreaking lyrics, in which Mariah creates some beautiful images. Even Jermaine Dupri's raps towards the end of the of the song seem at place. This is one of those songs where everything just works. Fantastic contemporary R&B at it's best here.
(2) The Pussycat Dolls "Stickwitu" B. Compare this second single to their first ("Don't Cha") and third ("Beep"), and you see where it's lacking. Like Destiny's Child, the group delivers terrific up-tempo tracks with energy, but seems out of place on a ballad. The girls have a smooth voice here and some sweet lyrics, but it all feels a little to tame compared to the hip-hop collaborations. It's a enjoyable song that lacks that special flair to make it great.
(3) Nelly feat. Paul Wall and Ali & Gipp "Grillz" C+. Almost funny how similar this is to his "Air Force Ones" single: a collaborative winter single about a "item" with no substance, but flashy beats (from JD this time) and ALOT of charm. That charm is key to the song as it makes the weak material far more entertaining than it has any right to be. Say what you will, Nelly and company are manifestly having fun on this track. I guess that after the touching "Suit" LP, we can let Nelly have some harmless fun.
(4) Chris Brown "Run It!" A-. While it may be nothing more than a re-tread of Usher's "Yeah!", this still manages to be an incredibly addictive debut single. Like early Usher, Brown is a very charismatic young man with a smooth flow voice, and it should be noted that Scott Storch is a much better producer that Lil Jon. Clocking at only three minutes or so is wise because the material can only be stretched so far and, aside comparisons with that 2004 smash, this is good enough to hold its own.
(5) Black Eyed Peas "My Humps" B. Granted "Where Is The Love?" was the BEPs only REALLY deep track, but even as a "pop-rap" cut this doesn't have the breezy vibe of "Let's Get It Started" or "Pump It". Maybe it's because Ferggie doesn't really fit the "Ciara/Kelis sex image", or maybe the writing is just week to begin with. In the end, we're left with an enjoyable track that doesn't have too much staying power afterwards. Though it may be an insignificant little trifle, that doesn't mean it's not a fun one.
(6) Rihanna "If It's Lovin' That You Want" B. Summer '05's "Pon De Replay" was meaningless summer fun, yet here Rihanna shows a bit more meaning with her work. Don't make this mistake of thinking this is Beyonce or Mariah Carey though, it's just a more refined Rihanna than we heard before: better lyrics, more flow and some plain sweetness. While not ready to compete with the top female R&B stars, she demonstrates that she has real talent and could have a promising career ahead of her.
(7) Bow Wow feat. J-Kwon and Jermaine Dupri "Fresh AZIMIZ" C-. "Hold You Down" and "Like You" showed a Bow Wow who was refining his music and creating a far more mature sound. Unfortunately, this awful single is a throwback to his earlier works, complete with simple beats and shallow lyrics. JD's production pails compared to his work on Mariah's "The Emancipation Of Mimi" LP, and J-Kwon's "Get XXX'd" showcased better raps. This is a true disappointment.
(8) Dem Franchise Boyz feat. Peanut and Charlay "Lean Wit It, Rock Wit It" C-. Marginally better than "I Think They Like Me", but that doesn't mean it's good. Even if the beats have more flow than the sound assault of the first, the group is still the boy band of rap music. The greatest hip-hop groups (Naughty By Nature, the Beastie Boys, A Tribe Called Quest, etc.) all had distinct personalities, some that this group utterly lacks. This is just shapeless, senseless hip-hop designed for undemanding ears.
(9) Three 6 Mafia feat. Young Buck and Eightball & MJG "Stay Fly" C-. Oscar winners or not, this group has never done it for me. They've been around for a decade, and still pale compared to their peers because of a lack of ambition; there is nothing here that we haven't heard in since hip-hop emerged in 1982. Young Buck's debut wasn't a masterpiece, but it was far better than what he's given here. I would say "It's Hard Out Here For A Pimp" would be better, but I didn't like THAT one much either.
(10) T-Pain "I'm Sprung" B+. After the dreadful mediocrity before, this is a nice low-key relief. While T-Pain may sound A LOT like his mentor, Akon, he is able to deliver his lyrics with true feeling and a beat that is downright mesmerizing and relaxing. He never has to try too hard, and just let's everything flow naturally. The end result is a rap song much more low key and refreshing than we're used to hearing on today's radio.
(11) Ray J "One Wish" B-. Ray J's biggest flaw is that he sounds a little too much like Frankie J, who sounds too much like Usher. Nice chain. On his own though, Ray J is a decent singer with a smooth voice aided heavily by Darkchild's production on this hit single. Thankfully, he is given very few comparisons to his Grammy-winning sister, Brandy (also a long time collaborator with Darkchild). Overall, we have a solid R&B tune even if it sounds a little derivative these days.
(12) Kelly Clarkson "Because Of You" A-. We've heard meaningful songs from the 1st "American Idol" before, but never ones with this type of devastating sadness. The lyrics seem so honest and true that one can almost tell Kelly is writing about her own life experiences. "A Moment Like This" was a slow song as well, but it was a happy and upbeat one; while this is most definitely not. It may not be cheerful, but it isn't supposed to be; it's supposed to bring us to tears and does. If nothing else it shows that Ms. Clarkson is a continually expanding artist.
(13) Natasha Bedingfield "Unwritten" A. It's not common for an artist to have his/her first two singles both total homeruns, but Natasha Bedingfield has accomplished that feat. This is just as good, if not better than, "These Words (I Love You, I Love You)". Just like that song she joyfully sings about life and living with sheer heart and conviction; there is much emotion and truth in her voice. She and her brother (Daniel) are easily two of the best British artists of the past few years (right up there with Mis-Teeq). Britney, Mandy and Christina should take note; this is what pop should sound like. This is one of the year's best singles.
(14) Nickelback "Photograph" A. Many critics love to trash Nickelback, but for what purpose? Chad Kroeger happens to be a very powerful vocalist, and the group writes songs with much weight and meaning. "Photograph" is no exception, as it is a powerful, emotion and heavy reflection back on high school; possibly inspired by the group's own experiences. You can sense true emotions and feelings throughout. Some say that 2001/2's "How You Remind Me" was a fluke masterpiece, but this is just as good as that brilliant track. Here we have a phenomenal rock track by, yes, a terrific rock group.
(15) The All-American Rejects "Dirty Little Secret" B+. While there self-titled 2003 debut was just OK and kinda unsatisfying, there follow up LP, "Move Along" is a highly satisfying. This first single may not have that much power or depth, but it is a light and breezy track that just plain rocks. Meaning they have all the rock sounds and shapings, but never push too hard and have a smooth flow to their music. Most notable of all is that they are not angry or mean; they're just belting a true American rock tune, and that's a great relief these days.
(16) Fall Out Boy "Dance, Dance" A-. You have to love the guys of Fall Out Boy: they aren't afraid to defy conventions. Though this may not be as bizarre or inventive as their breakthrough "Sugar, We're Goin Down", it is very goofy, unique and different. Among all things, their tone and attitude is original because they dare to actually bring light-hearted fun to the rock genre. It may have taken a while, but Fall Out Boy has finally broken out and gotten the credit that they deserve. Wallflowers; this is your anthem.
(17) Relient K "Who I Am Hates Who I've Been" B. Sadly, this lacks the zip and energy of "Be My Escape", yet it's still a pretty decent tune. The instrumentals are no exactly slick and are rather messy, but they are compensated for by some meaningful lyrics with true urgency in them. This is all an attempt by the group to follow 3 Doors Down's style if soft verses and loud choruses. Even if they don't fully succeed, this is a pretty good rock track and quite acceptable as a second mainstream single.
(18) Gorillaz "Dare" B+. It's tragic that this did not chart higher because it is a damn good song. While the Gorillaz are best known for their hip-hop flavored tunes ("Clint Eastwood", "Feel Good Inc."); this demonstrates why they are phenomenal dance/electronic artists as well. I have no idea what this song is about, but I do know that every single second of it is captivating and mesmerizing; even better than the Grammy-winning "Feel Good Inc.". Just like fellow British group Radiohead; they show that style and delivery is just as important as substance.
(19) Trace Adkins "Honky Tonk Badonkadonk" B-. The token country inclusion, but it's not exactly the best one to include. Though Adkins has been making music for a decade, he is still relatively unknown, and this single is a little too standard in the country game. I don't know, he's a competent artist, who just seems flat compared to Keith Urban, Gretchen Wilson and Big & Rich. A pleasant enough listen, but not very memorable afterwards.
(20) Cascada "Everytime We Touch" B. Ah the world of electronic/dance music; a pop world vibrant in nightclubs and radio stations. While the term "dance" can cover multiple genres these days, there is still an audience for "traditional dance". Overall this is pleasing dance tune that just follows conventions a little too much, those some will call it a masterpiece. I would say it's in the same league as Narcotic Thrust's "I Like It" from last spring; nothing groundbreaking, but entertaining none-the-less.
Bottom Line: ***. The album may not represent the best quality that Winter '05/'06 had too offer, but it does deliver on the promise of "20 Chart-Topping Hits". Most of the album is pretty decent with the exception of the "mediocre rap trio"; which is kinda sad because Beyonce's "Check On It", Kanye West & Jamie Foxx's "Gold Digger" and Mary J. Blige's "Be Without You" (all #1s) woulda been much better selections. Still, for those of you who love Top 40 Radio, but don't/can't buy tons of albums: pick this up right now.
