Finally,the PERFECT trash can-in every model,in every way !!! By A2JZIPHCFD8OSS on 2006-04-08
I first purchased the 8 gallon plastic model and it was amazing in every way.Never again would I have trouble wiping off a dinner plate or drippy leftovers having to somehow manipulate the poorly designed (but good effort) lids on every trash can ever made.No foot pedal to jerk around with,no more ugly bag hanging over, just move over the perfectly measured and designed lid and vuallah, the best part of the meal is here! Yes,that's how beautiful this invention is and works.
So I decided to pass this model on to my mom and go for the 13 gallon stainless steel model. While the lid is slightly smaller than the plastic model,on account of the sleek "wall hugger space saver"design, which required a little better aim til I got used to it,I was even more pleased with the beauty of the unit and overall I was happy with my decision. But don't get me wrong, the 8 gallon plastic model works just as well and is a sharp little trashcan,as far as trash cans go.
Both trashcans are lightning fast.As fast as you can put your hand in front of the lid, bang,it pops right up.It stays up til you're done, move away and boom,it pops down. It's quiet enough.Nice little whirling sound. It has an on/off button on the back,in case kids wanna play.Worse comes to worse you can take out the 6 "D"batteries that should last for years if the kiddies figure out the on/off button. But that's unlikely. It has a "stay open" button as well, for those busy occassions.AND, they both stay as clean as you choose to keep them because it's so easy to "hit the mark" every time! It has a "ring",which tightly and neatly holds down any type of bag and hides the overlap very cleverly so it doesnn't get soiled. Just a wipe on the top now and then for dust. The design allows you to make the most of each and every garbage bag.No more half full ,wasted bags.Every inch of the bag is used and when it's ready to go there's just the right amount of overhang to close it up.AMAZING!
EVERY household should have one of these. It is truly a thing of the future!
Noisy, fragile, and expensive - not for regular use By A2M4DN8OHBI65M on 2006-05-14
A fun novelty; don't buy this product for daily use. Extremely noisy gearbox to raise and lower the lid. Difficult asymetrical trash bag retaining ring inside the can often slips down past its retaining point and is always exposed to trash so you can just about guarantee you get garbage residue on your hands when changing the bag, and now I find the lid hinge points are very fragile and break, and the only solution offered by customer service is to buy another "lid assembly" for half the original cost of the unit when there should be a way to buy the broken plastic piece for $2 (Okay, $10-$15 by the time everyone gets their cut) or some kind of repair kit to patch the hinge area.
Absolutely Love It By A3D3SBISWHS8DM on 2006-05-20
It's not that over-sentitive at all. Size is perfect as a counter-side trash can. The only problem I had was a a small dent on the trash can, maybe caused by shipping.
All the positive reviews are TRUE! By A2PNOU7NXB1JE4 on 2006-08-07
I received it on 7/31/06 and was impressed w/ how well the manufacturer had packed it for shipping. It was evident they take pride in their product. As another reviewer noted, the metal could be thicker, but really it is quite adequate. It looks sharp, works as promised, and now it's less expensive than when I purchased it here a week ago. BTW Amazon has the lowest price on this item and w/ free shipping it is quite a bargain.
LID SENSOR MALFUNCTION!! By APCVA5138WZ4E on 2007-06-01
It worked great for a few weeks. After that I experienced the same problem that many others here have. The lid stays open. When the close button is pressed, the lid closes and opens back again after a second for no reason. And it simply stays open even if there's nothing around it. Changing batteries didn't help. I closed it and shut it off for a day. Then it worked well for an hour or so before malfunctioning again.
I'll be calling their customer service and will update this review. If their service sucks this wouldn' be a product worth buying no matter how fancy it is.
Some reviews mention about their customer service giving a damn! If I experience that I'll make videos of the malfunctioning trash can and post it on YouTube.
- Great in theory, annoying in practice
     By A3ILXMLABN4K9V on 2008-01-22
We thought this would be a great product, but the infrared sensor can't distinguish between a pair of hands with trash for the bin from somebody walking by the can. As a result, we were constantly setting the thing off inadvertantly, and the sound of the lid going up got to be a bit of a joke. Sometimes it would raise the lid for no apparent reason. Sometimes it refused to open, so we had to pause with the trash in hand, until it decided to oblige us. Or worse, when we had several small handfuls to deposit into the bin, it would close right before we tossed the next load in, necessitating a time-consuming cleanup.
Eventually we turned off the bloody infrared sensor, and now manually raise and close the lid. I'd like to return it, but the dents I put in the side from kicking the thing when it refused to cooperate kind of makes that an unlikely scenario. Until they allow the user to adjust the sensitivity of the sensor, or make one that is psychically connected with the user, save yourself the frustration and go with one of the pedal cans.
- Not great
     By A1HF1SC6NCYKSO on 2007-04-10
I should have read ALL of the customer reviews before purchasing this can. It is a bit flimsy for the price AND I've only had it for 2 days and the lid is already acting up. As in the other negative reviews the lid opens without anything in front of the sensor and stays open, you have to use the "close" button and hope that it stays closed and the "open" button if it does stay closed to get it to re-open. The sensor appears to be malfunctioning. Great idea but poor quality. I'm not sure if I'm going to bother shipping it back, I have to see how much the shipping charges will be. Save your money!
- Excellent Trash Can
     By A1JVQD9M6H092D on 2006-08-26
The trash can is great. Once its put together which is a simple 5 minute task it works great.
I like the way the inside ring holds the trash bag seamlessly with no white plastic sticking out at the edges. You place the bag inside and use the ring holder and fasten the ring down over the edges of the bag to hold it in place and simply fold the excess edges over the ring inside the bin. Very quick and no mess getting trash bags out of the can.
You can also make the bin lid stay open using the open button for longer jobs. For everyday use the 3 seconds opening time is ample.
I've been shocked once or twice when I've stood too close and the trash can opened, but we're all used to it now. The kids don't fuss with it either once the novelty wore off.
- Possessed by a ghost
     By A36NIXBSI768E3 on 2007-01-03
I am very disappointed with this trashcan. Within 1.5 months of purchasing the system, it's already malfunctioning. The trash can opens of its own accord and remains open until you push the close button. Then, it opens up again. However, when you try to open the can utilizing the motion sensor, the can doesn't open. I am so frustrated, I can't believe more people haven't posted regarding this problem. I would strongly advise against purchasing this product.
- OK until something happens - Customer Service Blows
     By AWC150S9KZ7WY on 2007-02-15
This trashcan worked great for the first 45 day. Then it kept staying open. Got tech support that didn't fix the issue was told to mail it in. After mailing it in on Dec 8th they said that it was take about 2-3 weeks after arrival before mailing it back to me. Well it is now Feb 15, I have called 5 times and spoked w/ angela who keeps saying it is being mailed on this date or that. Oh it's sitting in receiving and will be sent today. Oh were looking into it. And so on. Will i get it back or won't I. Oh and no one will claim to be the supervisor. Go ahead call them yourselves 800-660-7978 you'll see. Isn't it pretty bad when they know 1 of x number of customers by name???
- How can this be rated so high???
     By A2RZAXD52EJGAN on 2007-11-05
We have shopped for three weeks in several stores for a garbage can that looks good exposed and is of good quality. We thought we had finally found the solution on Amazon. According to the great reviews, we should have been thrilled at our new infrared trash can. Instead, we received a VERY cheaply made, thin, easily scratched and dented piece of metal with, again, a VERY cheaply made plastic motorized lid. I have a good mind for design and costs and this thing probably cost ~$5 to actually make. Our infrared lid went up smoothly, but then stayed up. We pressed the close button, and it would close, but kept getting stuck up. Also, the lid would raise randomly. You could hear it in the other room at random times when no-one was in the room- this model DOES NOT have an optional AC adapter, so you can imagine the costs incurred over a average year of false lifts. There is a whole genre of metal garbage cans at various big box stores that cost $75 - $100, but are all made in China and are very poorly made, especially for the price. My best recommendation is a company called SimpleHuman that, at least, has a five-year warranty on their products. I ended up buying a very nice plastic model that will not break, will not cost money to operate, and will not scratch or dent! Good luck!
- Nice concept, but poor build quality
     By A3515RWIARQY44 on 2006-06-27
I received the trash can with several dents on its side, probably due to shipping. After examining the material it was made of, I concluded that the metal was very thin and flimsy. The dents caused the retainer ring to no longer fit properly in the can. I can say that the lid opening mechanism was very smooth and functional, but the poor build quality of the can itself is why I'm returning it.
- Go to Costco! It's over priced!!!
     By AETCGYFQ1QGBB on 2006-11-13
I love this trash can; however, I went to Costco last week and saw an exact trash can for little over $40.
It's a rip off!!!
But If you don't live near Costco, you should get it. It's cool!
- Smart looking garbage can
     By A6G7NKJA2U7I6 on 2007-01-21
This trash can is smart looking and the automatic opening lid operates exactly as advertised. I would recommend this receptical for most any typical residential kitchen application. The standard tall kitchen 13 gallon capacity trash bags fit in this can exactly. Some people, with stiff arthritic fingers, may find installing the plastic retainer ring that holds the trash bag in place a little challenging. I am hoping we will get several years usage from this trash can.
- over priced touchless trash can
     By A2RJ1Z1M1Y7LVO on 2007-05-23
I ordered this product & paid $100 plus for the item. I found the same identical item for $50.00 at Sams club. The plastic gear that controls the lid is way under engineered. It came apart in less than a year. This destroyed the touchless qualityTouch-Free Stainless Steel 13-Gallon Trash Can
- This thing is so cool....
     By A2JAC0L3BNPNN6 on 2006-05-17
I don't wanna geek out over a trash can too much... but this thing is just too cool...
- Works Very Well
     By A317526BROLHAS on 2006-09-16
I bought this a year ago and wondered how well the electronics in it would hold up. Well, it still works as well as it did a year ago, and I've have yet to change the batteries! It will sometimes open unnecessarily if you get too close to the sensor, but I found turning it slightly solved this problem for the most part. Only mistake I made was throwing out the plastic bag liner accidentally one day along with the garbage, but folding the bag over the can works better, though it doesn't look as neat.
- 2 words...
     By A3DAS42VRO66SN on 2006-05-13
Love IT!
For under $75, it is about $100 everywhere else...
- Great, cheapest here as well
     By AJ4HLY7C9DFVW on 2006-06-16
As mentioned elsewhere in this review section, I doubt you'll find this cheaper anywhere else.
It has been great for the 2 weeks we've had it, no problems with set up, shipping, etc. The noise of the lid going up is nothing, you don't notice it at all.
My only concern is how long the motor of it holds up, but other than that I'm very satisifed, especially when you consider how much a "regular" stainless trashcan costs. I've seen some that are not nearly as big as this one (13 galoon/50 liter I believe) that cost much more.
- Classy Trash Can
     By A2KP45DO3RY4RG on 2006-12-13
#1 I don't know what trash can the other reviewers got at Costco, but it wasn't this one. I couldn't locate a step on steel can for less than what I paid for this ($[...] on sale)
On with the review. I have a teeny kitchen, I cook a lot - i needed a can that would fit in the small area and still hold a lot of trash. This is it. It has worked perfectly for me for the three weeks I've had it. Being a small kitchen I'm going to wear out the batteries sooner, it opens everytime I go in the fridge or pantry - but it makes me laugh, so that's ok. It holds a lot of trash, works perfectly, keeps the trash out of site. Obviously not as fast as me just tossing the trash at my previously open can, but not seeing the garbage is so much better. Here's a lovely little toy that works great and does what it's supposed to. When I bought this it qualified for prime, so check on the price and so forth. By the way, I love Amazon!
- Great trash can
     By A1M0K3BA5EHTKU on 2007-01-03
The sleek look of the stainless steel coupled with the black top is great for most kitchens. On the practical side, its large enough and contains odors pretty well. The automatic opening feature is very consistent as well.
- Extremely Effective and Cool
     By A3EB5O7HWORTM6 on 2007-01-19
I bought this for my family and everyone loves it. The automatic detection system is very cool and works great. It doesnt open every time you pass by it. You have to bring your hand in front of it for it to open. The trashcan itself is of a good size so I don't need to change the trash bag too often.
- have had a problem with this from 2nd week on
     By A203PXUXS3B6QW on 2007-01-20
The top comes up and wont go down....changed batteries twice now thinking that was the indicator for battery change. Now we have to push a button to get it open and manually push it back down....better to have a non possessed trashcan, the old fashioned kind.
this is a purchase i regret....
- Love it!!
     By A369KGAN6YJO9Z on 2007-01-20
I love this trash can, it absolutely lives up to its hype. It's so clean to use, no need to touch the can at all. It's easy to change the bag, and looks much better than my old trash can with the white plastic bag showing around the rim.
- Great Trash Can
     By A21UVFXVZPXQ9T on 2007-01-25
Why didn't I think to purchase this sooner? It is the perfect size for the kitchen, looks sleek and opens and closes when I need it to. No more struggling to open the can when my hands are full or dirty. I also can keep it open for a period of time, which is handy when I am preparing or cleaning up after a meal. Or I can turn it off if a child or pet or husband is amused with it. Occasionally it does open if I get too close when I walk by. It is easy to insert and remove the trash bag. The bag is out of sight and following a suggestion I read here, I use a 30 gallon size. It is a great trash can at a great price too!
- Trash Talk
     By A3GG07ZWUOD7C9 on 2007-02-22
We love Our touchless trash can for the most part. My 10 year old is in charge of taking the trash out, and getting the bag back in was quite a challenge for him...he eventually got the hang of it.
The only complaint I would have, as the mom.... the opening is to small and the kids sometimmes get things on the rim (inside rim)
Otherwise, It works just like they say. I love that my hands can be full and it just opens right up for me!
Just don't forget to buy batteries so when your trash can get there, you will be able to use it!
- Plastic gear teeth broke making unit unusable....
     By A1HLJ7CK9B3LU4 on 2007-09-16
Worked great for a few months and then the plastic gear teeth molded into the lid wore down, causing the unit to try to open but fail. I now have a $90 trash can that does nothing. Contacted iTouchless and 2 of their reps refused to acknowledge, instead referring me to a hidden web page on their site where I can order a replacement top for $45! All I need is the top flip lid. It's too bad they skimped on a 75 cent part of the construction process because the whole unit is now failed.
- Sensitive sensor solution
     By A3A1EQEH4N2C1E on 2007-11-14
Not sure if anyone else has posted this solution, all you have to do is cover part of the sensor with black electric tape, the more you cover the closer your hand needs to be for the lid to open. Overall a great trash can, only negative besides the overly sensitive sensor is the stainless steel is a bit too thin.
- Works as advertised
     By AINB3O27WWPLL on 2006-06-05
Our family has been using step on open trash cans for more than 20 years. Everytime a trash can broke, it was because it refused to open. Sometime we fixed it with duct tape, glue, or little home made replacement parts, but it never last long. We usually have to change trash can every year or 2. The last one lasted almost 2 years and it was a very high quality one. I ordered the iTouchless last month and I don't see how we could break this one! There is no touching, and actually make throwing away trash kind of fun even after 2 weeks. I don't know how long the unit will last, but from what I have seen, I doubt that it will break that easily under normal usage.
The only complain I have with the trash can is the location of the On/Off switch. It is in the back which normally will be next to the wall. Since we are so used to step open the trash, sometime we forgot there is no pedal on this one... and we ended up kicking it back against the wall. Everytime it happened, it would turn off the switch. It is not a big deal once we are used to the new opening method, but I wish they would put a cover on the switch or change it to a sliding switch. But since we were so handy in modifying/fixing our old trash can, we came up with a cover for it within a day.
- Works great lets see how long it lasts......
     By A2TUWUTURINYJS on 2006-06-24
After having the same trash can for 14 years....I was ready for a new one. Plus now we have 3 young children who make a LOT of trash...and always touching the filthy lid of our old wooden trash can was germ central! I loved the idea of "touchless" but questioned the quality. I even went to my local target to see if they carried in store to see if I could touch it, but no luck. Amazon truly has the best price on this can.
We received it in little over a week and it was damaged on the side in shipping...Amazon sent us another one in 2 days. Quick! Then within the first 24hours the batteries managed to fall out and I had to dig through the trash to get them. Ugggh so far not so good! But since then it has been operating VERY well. It opens quickly and closes on its own so it keeps clean :) It has an option where you can push a button to open it if you want it to stay open...because sometimes it just closes too fast when you want to go back to it multiple times. It holds the bag inside very well for a clean look. My only MAJOR disappointment is there is NO way to open it without batteries...so if the motor dies or your batteries die you have to put your nails into the edge of the top to carefully pull open. The description said it had a button to open and close which I assumed was manually not a push button for the motor. So basically if the motor goes on this it is junk. Lets see how long the motor lasts. Overall I am satified.
