Philips Avent iQ24 Sterilizer with 2 Bottles, 9 ozx$89.99

(47 reviews)

Best Price: $89.99

This baby bottle sterilizer gets the job done right. Dishwashers just don't get hot enough to eliminate harmful bacteria. But the Avent iQ 24 Steam Sterilizer reaches the recommended temperature of 212 F for fast, easy, and reliable steam sterilization. Its six-minute cycle will have bottles ready in no time, and its digital display, electronic countdown, and sound alerts let you know when it's done. It can accommodate up to six 9-ounce bottles, and can also be used for the washable components of your breast pump.

Baby care requires so much time and vigilant attention. Any appliance that takes the guesswork (and a few precious minutes) out of the endless feeding routine is a blessing to caregivers. The Avent IQ24 Sterilizer is a relatively small, simple appliance that sterilizes up to six (Avent brand) bottles and/or screw rings, nipples, pacifiers, and breast pump components in just six minutes. The contents then stay sterile for six hours, providing the lid is not removed. An optional second mode keeps bottle- and breastfeeding accessories sterile for up to 24 hours by continuously repeating the cycle, so baby can have clean, sterile bottles day and night. And as we know, babies actively require feeding 24/7, so this is no idle bonus!

A Sterilizer with an IQ
The Avent iQ24 Electronic Steam Sterilizer is so named because the makers consider it an "intelligent" product, using "advanced iQ technology." And it really is pretty smart. The machine communicates each phase of the sterilization cycle, so you never have to guess whether the bottles or breast pump accessories are actually sterile yet. A digital display, electronic countdown, and sound alerts give parents the assurance that baby will not be contaminated with the bacteria that lurk in unclean feeding equipment. Another cool feature is the ability to "pause" the cycle (again, read the instructions to do this properly!) in order to remove some items without interrupting the cycle.

Putting the Sterilizer Together
Although the iQ24 Sterilizer is relatively easy to assemble and use, it’s not necessarily intuitive. In other words, you’re probably going to have to read the instruction manual pretty carefully the first time around. After that, it should be a piece of cake. Basically, there is a pot with power cord, a lower basket, a bottle rack, an upper basket (plus a spare upper basket), a lid, measuring cup, and tongs. Two 9-ounce bottles are included, as well, along with nipples, screw rings, and dome caps. The baskets and bottle rack slide onto a central stem, and the bottles and breast pump components are placed in the appropriate baskets or rack. The sterilizer cleverly uses bottle screw rings to separate the baskets and bottle rack, putting the very items to be sterilized to good secondary use! Once the correct amount of water is added and all parts are assembled and loaded (and that’s the hardest part, figuring out which basket and bottle parts go where), simply plug the sterilizer body into an electrical outlet, select mode one or two (for six-hour or 24-hour sterilization cycles), and wait six minutes (for either mode). You’ll also need to study the information pamphlet for a translation of the various beeps and flashing lights on the display, but generally it will be obvious when the sterilization cycle has begun and ended, and what to do next (feed that baby!).

Dishwasher Basket
As a bonus feature, two baskets can be clipped together to hold small items such as nipples, breast pump parts, pacifiers, etc., for washing in the top rack of your dishwasher prior to sterilization. Keep in mind that Avent items may discolor over time if they are washed in the dishwasher with dirty dishes covered with remnants of strong sauces, such as tomato or curry sauce.

Note: Sterilization is not the same as, nor should it replace, washing! All bottles and breast pump supplies should be washed carefully in mild, soapy water, and rinsed, before sterilizing. Also, for optimal effectiveness of the sterilizer, and to reduce limescale build-up, use distilled water for sterilizing. Regardless of whether you use tap or distilled water, you should de-scale the sterilizer every four weeks or so (read manual for instructions).--Emilie Coulter

  • WARNING! Avent Bottles Contain BPA Bisphenol-A

    By A36LJTZO3YWBD9 on 2008-04-09
I liked Avent Bottles, my daughter Liked them too! Then I found out about Bisphenol -A being used to make the Bottles. After re-searching Bisphenol -A, I discovered that exposing my baby to harmful chemicals with the potential for long term affects later in life, was definitely not for me!! There are other options out there, all glass bottles are safe, as well as Born Free, Mam by Sassy, Green to Grow and Adrini. Do your own research. I'm really surprised the non Bisphenol -A Free bottles haven't been recalled yet! I'm sure it's just a matter of time, before enough people are educated.

  • Great Buy

    By A2H3789TW4I0Q0 on 2006-08-18
I bought the Avent Steam Sterilizer to save time and water when cleaning my Avent pump and bottles. I love this product. It only takes about 4 oz. of water and is ready in 6 minutes! I bought mine 4 years ago, so my older model does not have the electronic readout and alarm when ready, and I don't think either is necessary. Mine has a red light that goes off when the steaming is complete. The steamer comes with a basket that can be used in the dishwasher to hold small items. Here is a tip: when I first used my steamer, I had water spots on everything. I called the customer service, and they advised me to try distilled water. This worked like a charm. Apparently I had some ingredient in my well water that was causing the spots. Using distilled water was not costly, since the steamer uses so little water.

  • Love it, Love it, Love it! MUST HAVE!

    By A2OAROD8IAADUU on 2006-12-16
Great product. I wash bottles once a day now. The 24-hour setting keeps bottles sterile for the entire time. Great for sterilizing other items as well, such as pacifiers. It doesn't take up much space at all. No more inconvenient boiling of the bottles. Basically, it just works out really well, and I can't say enough about it. Just a side note, take the instructions advice and use distilled water for sterilizing. It won't build up like tap water will. I usually just by a gallon of it every 3 weeks or so.

  • A point to note before buying this

    By A356JAJSFPFB5P on 2007-08-15
I gave 5 stars, considering reviews of others who own/use it and don't want to lower the ratings in any way, considering this is definitely a good product. But, what about the cost of this? Just think, is it really worth it? All families have a microwave these days. They are the FINEST AND BEST STERILIZERS anywhere! If you can get a dedicated sterilized and clean container, microwave safe, wash and rinse all the baby bottles, nipples, etc. (the washing part anyways one has to do, irrespective of whether they use this product or not) and place them in this microwave safe container, run it in microwave for no more than 40 to 50 seconds - violla - all items are absolutely sterilized.

Those who might not be aware, microwaves kill 99.9% of all germs within 20 seconds of exposure. In fact, a very common practice is to microwave the cloth or sponge one uses to rinse/clean utensils for 20 seconds to get it sterilized. Think what 40 to 50 seconds will do to the bottles, etc.........Completely disinfect them. You save (say) $70.00 ($4.00 for the Target bought microwave safe container, with lid and big enough to hold the bottles, lying down)

[Edit, after reading comments on original review, as above]
I agree, it was my fault and mistake to miss out a critical and vital point and those who have commented on that - I thank you! The above review had a critical pt. missing - one should never, ever microwave ONLY the product in question, i.e. bottles, nipples, etc. What I really meant was what I use, i.e. I have a container, where I put all the baby stuff in, pour about 7 to 8 oz. of water and m/w for 8 min., which steams out the water and steams out everything, thus sterilizing.

The cost of the container was $3.00. Sorry - my bad. So, what I really wanted to say was is the price worth it? As for time involved, it takes just the same. Effort - also.

  • Good product

    By A3VKLB7ACQ51O5 on 2007-09-05
We haven't used the product yet for sterilizing any items but we ran the initial cycle and don't have any complaints. It's very fast and doesn't require having to run the dishwasher just to sterilize a few bottles. Also, having to use a microwavable sterilizer really made me uncomfortable because of the uncertainty of cancer-causing agents in microwaved plastic. The price on Amazon is about $30 cheaper than at Babies R Us or Target so if you're considering it, purchase it through Amazon. You won't be let down.

For the skeptics, I'm sure there are other less expensive products that do the same thing but my husband and I are first-time parents and haven't realized the impracticality of many baby items out there.

  • Important "Phased Out Item. DO NOT BUY!
    By A1RAD9EZMTVHSE on 2008-09-06
Philips Avent iQ 24 is a great product but this model has Bisphenol A commonly abbreviated as BPA. It has been proven medically that this has acute toxicity. It leads to physiological effects on the body. You do not want it for your child. It has already been banned in various countries.

Philips has replaced this product with BPA free model (manufactured in England). You need to look for BPA Free Philips Avent iQ 24 and avoid this.......

  • A boon for new parents!!!
    By A162LPWCZ69EAN on 2007-01-09
We bought this product out of frustration over sterilizing bottles for our 2nd son. Now we wish we had this when our 1st was using bottles. It is a really great product. There is not much to do with it. All you do is stack the bottles (in neat trays that come with it) and turn it on. One thing i would recommend, use distilled water. I read this in another review on Amazon.com, and i think it is a great idea to keep the coil clean. There is not way to clean the heating element, so using distilled water is the only option.

  • NO REGRETS! Worth it!!
    By A1XPVVLGC1WIHM on 2007-08-08
I was advised by several moms (including my own mother when she found out I spent $90 on a sterilizer!) not to buy a sterilizer, that bottles only truly need to be sterilized before the first time they are used so it's just an unnecessary hassle and expense. This is true in the U.S. (not all countries have a monitored water supply) according to our doctor, provided you have a perfectly healthy child. I was also worried about my twins getting allergies if they aren't exposed to any germs if we're constantly sterilizing everything. I bought it anyways before my twins were born and I do NOT regret buying this item!! My son has very severe acid reflux and a sensitive tummy and his doctor recommended sterilizing the bottles between every use. This has become a life saver!! We use it several times a day, every day, so we've definitely gotten our money out of it!! With twins that were fed expressed breast milk AND formula in two different bottles each feeding (X 2 babies = 4 bottles PER FEEDING), we were going through TONS of bottles every day! We rarely use the caps on our bottles, so instead of putting caps on the top rack, we put 6 more 4oz bottles, for a total of 12 bottles each time. WOW, no other sterilizer will hold that many! My time is extremely valuable with twin infants, so I really appreciate the fact that it takes 2 minutes to load. Very simple to use! I also loved the fact that my Medella breast pump parts fit well on the top shelf. We put toys, pacifiers, sippy cups, baby spoons, medicine dispensers, etc. in this thing! We've been using it for 7 months now and it's still working great for us. I do not use distilled water like many have mentioned, just filtered water and have never had any problems, but I guess it would depend on your water supply where you're at. This is a much safer alternative to cleaning products!

  • Great product!!
    By A2SHBE613V450H on 2007-08-23
If you buy the bit about sterilizing everything that comes in contact with your newborn, this is a great product!!! Large capacity, easy to work, fast sterilization. I use it daily. Most of the other products I bought for the baby suck. This one is worth the money.

  • after 2 times it's not working
    By A1L1DWP2Z5QT0L on 2007-11-19
yes this sterilizer heat up very fast and work great but I used it only 2 times and it's stop working. The power is not on and doesn't create steam. I can't return it because I bought it 2 months before my son was born.

  • I'm miserable without my sterilizer!
    By A32D0NK7OC4ZL0 on 2008-01-11
    I am not kidding!

If you are planning to invest in 14+ bottles, you may not need this product. However if you have 7-10 in circulation (like we do) and don't use a dishwaher or fill it up daily, this is wonderful.

I have had mine since my son was about 2 weeks old. He's 5 months old now, and we have never had a problem with this sterilizer. Occasionaly I have gone into a panic thinking it was dead, but it's just the plug in the back of the unit. If you unplug it to dump the water and don't push it back in far enough, the device won't power up. Imagine that!

Prior to that we either put his bottles in the dishwasher or boiled them on the stove. This works so much better! It is quick and effective, easy to clean and I have gotten it to hold 5 Dr. Brown's bottles (with all their wonderful parts) and two breast pump horns.

I express milk with a Medela pump multiple times in a day, and this sterilizer is more cost effective than using microwave steam bags. It is NOT more cost effective than boiling, but it is far less time consuming and sloppy. I left my sterilizer home and went on a week long trip. What a nightmare! If I never see a big pot of water again it will be too soon! And that leads me to my one complaint. This device does not travel well :( We took it with us on a prior (shorter) trip and it is somewhat aggravating to transport. But it was very convienient to be able to sterilize my son's bottles in a hotel room, so the benefit outweighted the annoyance.

If you plan to sterilizer everything every use like I do (yup, I am a first time mom!) then this sterlizer is for you! Yes, the microwave steamers are a lot less expensive, but with all the studies of chemicals leeching out of baby bottles, why risk it?

  • Great Product but doesn't sanitize toys pacifier holders etc.
    By A39L3CEHZJ68W4 on 2008-08-14
I can't think of anything bad to say about the product itself in terms of how it functions etc. It is fairly straight forward to use and it served me well when I was sanitizing scores of bottles and pacifiers upon their initial purchase.

The way it works is you put the stuff you want to sanitize (bottles and/or their accessories and/or pacifiers) into the huge bin. They have a way to support bottles but I never used the mechanism because I used Dr. Brown's bottles and the bottle support mechanism only works with Avent bottles. So I just threw my Dr. Brown's bottles and accessories and pacifiers into the bin. Measured out 90 mL of water (measuring cup is included) put the lid on the thing, plugged it in, and pressed the button so that number 1 was selected (I never used the 24 hour sterilize option, for which one would select number 2). Then I released the button, pressed again (until the display would indicate that it was working), and that is it. When the unit is finished it will beep 5 times, and then you carefully remove the cap and wait for the items to cool. After you remove the contents, be sure to empty the water that remains in the unit, so that next time you can use it without worrying about dumping the water after you've loaded up the unit. All in all it's very easy. (See my comment in the end about the water.)

I definitely think this product is better than the microwave versions, which are cheaper but which I believe are a bit disgusting and risky for the baby. (Risky because we don't really know how the microwave affects the baby, and disgusting because one can never really disinfect the microwave properly.)

However, I must say that the product is useless now, which is why I gave it one star. I tried to use it to sterilize the MAM pacifier holder and it melted it. That is when I realized that the steam is too strong for most plastic toys etc and even if the steam doesn't destroy the product, heating it to such a degree may cause the baby harm (the heat may cause a chemical reaction that was not intended by the manufacturer when they designed the product).

I realize that what I should have bought was the Germ Guardian Nursery Sanitizer. It's cheaper than the Avent one and it can sanitize pacifiers, toys, and bottles. It's really a wiser choice in the long run. Now The Avent Sterilizer is just taking up space (it's rather large) in my kitchen cabinet.

And as the baby gets older, it ends up throwing almost everything on the floor, so I end up throwing all sorts of toys (even electronic ones) into the laundry, which takes time and deprives our baby of her toys.

If someone does decide to purchase this item, I suggest using DISTILLED water. If you use regular water (even bottled) there is a residue that remains in the unit (and it is better for the unit in the long run).

  • Wish we'd purchased it sooner
    By A3DQHOM16OPON1 on 2007-06-19
This sterilizer is very easy to use and saves us a considerable amount of time. We were initially hesitant about purchasing it because of the price and because we felt that it would be the same amount of work as using a pot of boiling water. However, I got to try out the sterilizer at a relative's home while on vacation and found that it really made life much simpler - no more waiting for water to boil and then waiting 5-10 minutes to remove all the bottles from the pot. With this, you just pour some water - we use distilled water as suggested in a couple of other Amazon.com reviews - place the bottles and such neatly in the racks, and then literally, we set it and forget it.

  • Excelente producto
    By A3OWD8EQ4BYJ5L on 2007-09-14

  • Must have!!!
    By A10IU4XF1J68JW on 2007-10-10
This product is a must have for all moms! It's nice to know that what you are giving your child has been sterilized well. It has lots of space for all the parts of the bottle. Great for 4oz to 11oz bottles. I put my sons pacifiers & spoons in the top tray. It is so worth the money because of the amount that can be sterilized at one time, the time that it saves you (vs. boiling bottles), and the ease. I wish that I got it sooner!! I would buy it again and would recommend it to my best friend.
Tip: Use bottled water. We have hard water and the bottle water keeps the hard water residue down.

  • Fabulous sterilizer
    By A2XHXAANH923PX on 2007-11-23
I think this sterilizer is fabulous. I use it to sterilize doctor brown's bottles and everything else that needs sterilization. The Doc Brown's bottles are narrow neck and this is made for wide neck but it still works like a charm (the space for the bottles just is bigger than the bottle). I recommend this to everyone and anyone (and I recommend using distilled water). I don't like putting plastic in the microwave so this solution works great for me.

  • Philips Avent iQ24 Sterilizer
    By A2ETTD38N2KM11 on 2007-12-08
I'm not that happy with the sterilizer. I take 3 nebulized drugs every other month and 1 nebulized drug in the other months. The sterilizer was meant to cut my time caring for the nebulizers. For about a week and a half, the sterilizer performed as the instructions stated. Then I started having trouble with the sterilizer keeping the nebulizers sterile for 6 hours as stated in the instructions. The sterilizer would go through the cycle, but then it would shut itself off way before the 6 hours were up. The first time it happened, I thought it was a fluke, but it happened again. I am not feeling that well and just don't have the energy to send it back.

  • Sterilizer
    By A1ODBD88LZL4MM on 2007-12-12
    I LOVE IT.
It is easy to use, fast, you can put a lot of stuff inside and you don;t need to use only Avent bottles. With a little bid of imagination you can use any brand nale bottle and nipple.
This product is easy to clean, just water and vinager evry 3 months.
I love the feature that keeps bottle sterilize for 24 hours, I mean the microwavable one does not do this. I didn't know that sterilize bottles do expiry and this sterilizer tells you when is time to run the cilce again.
    I strongly recommend this product.

  • it works perfectly, there's nothing intelligent about it
    By A13PT03EWR07XM on 2008-01-24
this is an incredibly simple device and it works perfectly. However, the intelligent IQ description is laughable.
This unit boils water and makes steam. After placing a pre-measured amount of water the unit boils water for six minutes. After that your parts are sterile and a second timer, one for 6 hours starts. In theory, if you leave the lid closed your parts will remain sterile. that's it.

A lot of people comment on the price of this unit, and I admit, $73 is a lot to pay for something that boils water for six minutes. you are paying for ease and convenience,

  • BEST STERILIZER EVER USED!!!
    By A3K0MMDF9UUDE3 on 2008-07-05
This sterilizer is SUPER EASY to use and can hold up to 6 bottles, no matter what sizes. It accommodates my Medela Harmony Breast Pump, and any other things i want sterilized. Organization is a must for me and this definitely met my standards.

  • Quick and Easy to Sterilize 6 Bottles at Once
    By A2S0SI8LW5M8TA on 2007-02-15
I purchased the Avent iQ24 sterilizer after reading the reviews on this website and am very pleased with it. It provides a quick and easy way to sterilize up to 6 bottles and nipples at one time. I also like that it can be programmed to re-sterilize for up to 24 hours.

The only thing that is difficult to get to are the bottom two neck rings when the sterilizer is fully loaded. However, we just put the neck rings on the top rack instead.

Great product that is worth the money in my opinion!

  • It's a great product!
    By A1839280UCC1HU on 2007-09-21
I bought a Avent microwave sterilizer two months ago. It works fine, but we need to take it down to kitchen whenever we sterilize bottles and nipples. After reading customer reviews in this site, we decided to try this iQ24. It's really a great product. My wife loves it. However, there is no significant difference between iQ24 and microwave if you don't care about convenience and organic.

  • I love that 24 hours sterilizing mode
    By A1GVPO7N5CNC0I on 2008-01-07
The first one I bought was not working properly. It always complained I've added too much water. I replaced it and the second one worked fine.

Compared with microwave sterilizers or electric sterilizer from other brands, this sterilizer is rather pricey, but I'm glad I've picked this one. I set the sterilizer to 24 hours mode so the bottles are ready to use all the time (you still need to replace water inside every day). When I was holding my hungry and crying baby in one arm, I was really glad that the bottle is already sterilized and ready to use right away.

  • love it
    By A2JKZNLTH63496 on 2008-01-18
    i love this.
i got it off of ebay because it was cheaper there. i dont have a dishwasher so no sterilzer function, and our water takes forever to heat up. this was one of the major things we didn't get at the shower but that i really felt we needed. and i am thrilled i picked it up. i use it every day, at least once. i have had no problems with it.
i love it love it love it love it!

i can't imagine boiling bottles. it just seems too clumsy and time consuming for me. this is perfect. i highly recommend this. it has made my mommy routine so much easier.

  • I could not live without this
    By ADTWNRTU54HVA on 2008-02-01
I love this product. It fits a lot of bottles, it works really fast (6 minute cycle) and I don't have to put them in the dishwasher. I estimate that I use this at least 5 times a day.

  • OK product
    By A3FQIK0A1EXWLL on 2008-03-11
I bought this item before my son was borned. I will say it is useful at beginning when the baby is very small and use a lot of 2 oz bottles, it is worth to have which can stealize all bottles at once. after the baby is getting older and older, I found I only use 2 or 3 bottles a day because I am breast feeding him. So I end up to have this machine sitting there with the dust. I find out use hot water to boil it for 5 minutes with a small pot is much easier and fast way to do so. and it can save me 80 bucks.

  • Fantastic Sterilizer
    By A1IUMZ9YN6RCY7 on 2008-04-09
I've been using the IQ24 Sterilizer for 3 months & love it! It's easy to use and cleans my pump, 6 bottles, nipples & bottle tops all at the same time. Prior to purchasing this cleaner, I used a microwaveable sterilizer bag that could only clean 3 bottles at a time. The IQ cuts down on the amount of time I have to spend cleaning pump equipment & bottles. It's also nice to have the items remain sterile for 24 hours.

  • love it!
    By ASI53TQ70GSZJ on 2008-04-28
we LOVE this sterilizer! it holds several bottles and breastpump parts simultaneously and is very easy to use. only takes a few minutes to cycle as well. i also feel much safer using this in leiu of a microwave sterilizer.
helpful hint -- price i paid on amazon, i think $68 and free shipping -- came out to about $20 less than either target or babies r us had the same product for, great deal!

  • Very much satisfied
    By AGLTJ3YIOEGMS on 2008-01-20
I've owned this AVENT sterilizer for almost 2 months now and i might say that i am truly satisfied. I haven't had any problems with it. Time to complete the sterilization is pretty fast. The only drawback is sometimes it does not give the sterilizing mode you want if you press the button too long.
