"Don't judge me, monkey." By A1VCPMT1RRS7K0 on 2006-05-23
Allen Covert, who we all know from his character parts in numerous Adam Sandler movies, stars in this film. The movie definitely has a familiar Sandler-type feeling to it, but I thought it worked well with the given cast.
It all starts out with a hilarious scene where Alex (Covert) is being evicted from his place while playing video games. It turns out his roommate has acquired a penchant for Filipino hookers and he's spent all the rent money on his addiction. It sounds pretty weak, but it's a great scene and it's really well done.
A good number of actors make guest appearances. Rob Schneider is the Middle-Eastern landlord, David Spade is a feminine waiter at a health food restaurant, Kevin Nealon is an overly spiritual boss, the kid from Dodgeball (Joel Moore) plays a video game designing genius who has a robot as part of his dual personality, the mother from Everybody Loves Raymond plays Alex's grandmother... Nick Swardson (who is a professional stand-up comic) is hilarious in his role as Alex's best friend at work. He really adds to the movie with his personality and one-liner delivery.
There are some really good lines in this movie, as well as some strikingly funny scenes. I found myself laughing out loud more than a few times. If you liked early Sandler movies, you will definitely appreciate this kind of humor. The Unrated version is raunchy and even better than I was expecting it to be. There is also a good deal of bonus material, including some featurettes and deleted scenes.
Surprisingly funny By AJKWF4W7QD4NS on 2006-06-14
I'm usually leary of anything bearing Adam Sandler's Happy Madison production label, but much to my surprise, Grandma's Boy is a blast. Allen Covert (who also co-wrote and produced) stars as a 35 year old video game tester working on a hit new game, and in his spare time he is secretly designing his own game while smoking a lot of marijuana. When he gets kicked out of his house, he ends up living with his grandmother (Doris Roberts) and her two room mates (Shirley Knight and Shirley Jones) while dealing with his best friend (Nick Swardson), his ultra tan dealer (Peter Dante), his super hot new boss (the ultra hot Linda Cardellini), and some other weirdos as well. Despite it's predictable plot and gags, Grandma's Boy works mainly because of it's stars and the blast they're having filming it. Covert, Swardson, and Dante (all of which had a hand in either writing or producing the film) are quite funny in their roles, with Swardson stealing the show as a granny loving master of Dance Dance Revolution that still lives with his parents and sleeps in a race car bed. Frequently funny and enjoyable throughout, Grandma's Boy is a surprising stoner comedy that is better than one might think, and it's certainly better than anything that Adam Sandler himself has headlined in the past few years. Frequent Sandler cohorts and SNL alumni Kevin Nealon, David Spade, and Rob Schneider all have brief turns in the film as well.
Great movie, a new stoner classic for everyone to enjoy! By A15FXRURP1SOQX on 2006-03-30

Idiotic Perfection By A2RKI7RPP5CJMG on 2006-06-27
It's rare that I give a comedy five stars, but "Grandma's Boy" is perfect. Comedic timing, a brief romantic angle, wonderfully silly acting and a fun plot make this one of the most perfect comedies I've ever seen. Allen Covert plays Alex, a recently homeless video game tester who's just looking for a break. He visits his local weed dealer, played tightly by Peter Dante, to see if he can stay at his house for awhile. Alex has second thoughts about staying there when he finds out that Dante's African tribesman buddy, Dr. Shokalu, has acquired an actual lion to protect the stash. His next attempt at bedding down is with his game-testing buddy, played with stereotypical geek charm by Nick Swardson. His sleepover experience at Swardson's home reveals that Swardson still lives with his parents, has a lot of toys, and a really cool car bed. It also leads up to the first really funny (and really wrong) confrontation involving Covert and one of Swardson's family members. From there, Covert ends up staying with his grandma, Doris Roberts, who is basically playing a role similar to that of hers in "Everybody Loves Raymond," but with a whole lot more edge. She and her two roommates, Shirley Knight and Shirley Jones (Partridge Family), welcome Covert into their home with open arms. The result is an all out pot party, geriatric sex, geeks fulfilling their wildest dreams, a kung-fu chimp, dance dance revolution challenges, vegetarian humor, a game programming scandal and a ton of other things that just don't belong together but somehow work here.
There is also a romantic angle to the story involving the cute Linda Cardellini (Freaks and Geeks, the Scooby movies). "Grandma's Boy" takes care to not drag the comedy down with the love story as I've seen in countless other comedies these days. Cardellini plays Covert's new supervisor, and they become close friends as the story rolls along. Even she manages to become part of the lunacy when she takes the boys out one evening.
A number of SNL alumni are in this flick. Rob Schneider makes a brief appearance as Covert's landlord. Kevin Nealon plays the holistic owner of the game company Covert works for. The scene stealer, however, is David Spade as Shiloh, a sexually-questionable waiter at a vegetarian restuarant who takes on Covert and his buddies while they're celebrating the completion of game-testing. The only SNL omission is Adam Sandler, who's Happy Madison company produced this flick. However, it's obvious that he put his stamp on this movie. It features the same stable of actors that are featured in almost every other Sandler flick out there.
This movie is wrong in so many ways, but that's what makes it fun. The really amazing thing is that all of it is pulled off with little or no actual offense to those who are made fun of, and that's an amazing feat these days. If you love dirty comedies like "The 40 year-old Virgin," "There's Something About Mary," and "Wedding Crashers," you're sure to love this flick.
Very highly recommended. A complete surprise that I missed in the theaters that is well worth purchasing.
Laugh out loud funny By A14HHFC2FDAHL0 on 2006-01-06
While not a high class comedy, this movie hits all of the right funny points and should become a college cult classic.
A 35 year old beta tester (Allen Covert) finds himself in a unique living situation trying to impress his boss surrounded by a lot of pot smoking characters.
Certainly a must see if you want a good laugh. Same production group that does all of Adam Sandlers movies, although a different twist since Covert is the star (appearances by some of the Sandler regulars).
- Are you kidding me?
     By on 2006-01-26
In the day in a life with a Grandma's boy>This movie was not funny at all>More of a 40 year old virgin ripoff at best. There was no dialogue to carry the movie nor was there any humor.Yes,Some parts might be disturbning and lewd but that comes with the shtick and Adam sandler was involved with this flick so you can generally get the idea of how it pans out.
The whole premise was all over the place that it was boring and I almost felt like leaving the theatre.
why would adam sanlder be involved witht this crap?
No bright spots but the video game reference was cool as it is so underrated and as far as then one-liners it wasn't that funny.
Movie Rating: 1/10(it was that bad save your money)
- Happy Madison does it again.
     By A2CEGSYVSW0L8C on 2006-04-06
This movie is great. One of the funniest I've seen in a while. No Adam Sandler cameos, but hey, he can't be in them all. Trust me, you won't stop laughing, especially during the bathroom scene ;-)
- I can't even express how bad this movie is
     By A2U51HFISXVR8F on 2006-05-10
Okay, I'm not even going to bash the film. I want to bash the percentage of youth culture who actually find this funny. I enjoy off-the-wall comedy; I enjoy all kinds of comedy. Low to high brow. But this wasn't comedy. It wasn't even a movie. You can't just string a series of a poorly-delivered lines, pointless scenes, and generic gags together with "celebrity" cameos, and expect people to pay money to see it... Okay, I just read what I wrote and, please, please, understand, words cannot express how bad and unfunny this masturbatory pile committed to celluloid is. Seriously, if you want a lobotomy, go to a neurosurgeon. It takes longer, but at least they're funnier. But again, I don't want to bash the film. I want to ask anyone who has seen this movie, or is considering seeing it, to stop and reconsider what you truly think is funny. This is not it. You're being lied to by Adam Sandler. He thinks you're all idiots, and he and his crew can throw up into a camera, and you'll all think it's hilarious. Stop wasting your money, and please, somebody stop greenlighting movies for the lowest-common denomenator. People deserve better than this, even if they're too stupid to see that.
- Pornographic and infantile
     By A1XESQ7C7NNZX4 on 2006-10-19
I have wasted about 50 minutes of my life on this sorry excuse for a comedy. It makes me sad to think that there were so many infinitely more amusing, or relaxing, or simply useful things I could have done in those 50 minutes. I thought I might waste another 10 minutes on reviewing this tripe and warning fellow human beings against such a deplorable waste of time.
In those wasted 50 minutes nothing could make me smile once. Here's a random sample of the gags: in one scene we see an adult man sleeping in a little boy's car-shaped bed and sucking on his thumb, this scene could make the 5 to 7 year old laugh really hard. The very next scene shows his acquaintance, a 36-year-old man in a bathroom masturbating to a little plastic doll while talking to it aggressive, foul and pornographic language. And because it is an "unrated" "comedy" his friend's mother (fully clothed) walks into the bathroom while the man ejaculates on her because "he couldn't stop it." All the other gags are just as bad, totally witless, and either super-infantile or hard-core pornographic with absolutely nothing beside or in between.
I'm thinking that the gag author/authors might have spent too much time on watching cheap porn and too little on seeing what a good comedy is like.
- Waste of Time
     By A3MLR91OTHXKGH on 2006-05-08
The movie was so bad that I couldn't remember what it was about until I read the reviews. My husband still doesn't remember the movie. It's a good thing that I'm retired and have lots of time.

- I won't buy it, but I'll watch it again
     By A2VSTCKMUB46LL on 2006-05-08
This was a silly stoner movie, with several hysterical scenes and enough good laughs that I don't regret seeing it. Hearing some of the reviews, I expected it to be much worse. Almost lovingly mocking the geek culture, this movie will probably be best enjoyed by geeks and stoners, or people who don't mind humor designed for them.
If you've seen other Happy Madison productions, you know what to expect, sex jokes, drunk/high escapades, lots and lots of swearing. The plot is thin and really, not the point. The "villian" is a super-nerd, one so geeky even the software testers make fun of him (behind his back). Kevin Nealon does a small role similar to his zen golfer in Happy Gilmore, David Spade cameos as a gay waiter in a vegan restaurant and Rob Schneider has a scene as the landlord who throws the main character out. You'll recognize plenty of other Happy Madison alum through out.
In the extras, brief vignettes about the "bathroom scene" and the monkey are funny and appropriately short. I also watched the deleted scenes, which had a few laughs. I didn't check out any other extras, but enjoyed those.
I won't buy this movie, but I will definitely watch it if it's on HBO, and I'll recommend it to my friends who aren't easily offended.
- Be cautioned
     By A7G1ZJJ6ULHT7 on 2006-01-13
This is a intresting movie. It has many sexual things in it. My grandma had wanted to see it but I called her and told her not to. It has lots of things the older generation might not enjoy. Yes it is funny, but it is not the type of movie you would think it was just by hearing the name. It is rated R for a reason with its nudity and sexual/drug use.
- Another GR8 Hapy Madison release
     By A19O1V2BSSXE04 on 2006-03-31
Must see for any Happy Madison fan. This unfortunately was more of a sleeper hit than more publicised movies like The Longest Yard, but a garanteed laugh for sandler fans, stoners or gamers. SNL/Happy Madison cameos abound.
Only things missing were no cameos by Sandler and no "You can do it, rip his freaking head off" scene.
"My grandma drank all my weed"
- Grandma's Boy ROCKS!!
     By AQBIUSQKUU93R on 2006-05-09
I went to the movie theater to watch this movie not really expecting a whole lot, but I like most of Adam Sandler's stuff so I thought I would give it a try. I was in pain even after the movie was over because I laughed so hard! It is one of the best movies I have ever seen! If you like video games, chicks, pot jokes, and a bunch of crazy guys who like to make the most of life, you will love this movie. I can't say enough about this movie. If you don't take the time to watch this movie at least once you are missing out on the movie of the decade. I highly recommend this to anyone over the age of 16.
- Funny but Crude humor and IT WORKS
     By A2F7CCPK4QL359 on 2006-06-20
Grandma's Boy seem so familar as a concept and yet so different than any otherr movie you may have seen.
If you are a fan of such movies like Animal House, Big Daddy, Revenge of the Nerds, Dazed and Confused, Every Which Way but Loose (look for the MONKEY scenes!) and TV's That 70s Show-you will love this movie....it has all the elements from this films and milks them into this one crude movie
The funny thing about this movie is seem so common in its delivery, like a midnight cult movie flick. The story about a Computer Programer (Allen Covert) who has to find a new place to live after being kicked out of his old place. He finds a place, he stays with his Grandmother (Emmy winner from Everyone Loves Raymond's Doris Roberts who character here take her away from Raymond Character) and her two house mates the over medicated (Tony Winner Shirley Knight-who takes her flower child gone wrong to the Nth degree) and the oversexed (Oscar winner Shirley Jones..and you will never see Mrs Partridge from the Partridge Family in the same light again!). All three senior actresses milk their parts fully and makes this work. You see why they won their acting awards and this is a showcase for their acting here
The weird other programers in the cast including the lovely Linda Cardellini (from ER) highlight and bring different directions to Covert's Alex character. It works and is funny. The banter of everything from drug humor, sex jokes, nerd jokes and trek-this alone make this a cultist film.
There is great cameos by David Spade, Rob Scheider and Kevin Nealon (worth it for the film alone)..DONT MISS THEM! I wish Adam Sandler whpo produced this film would have had a cameo~well there is always the sequel!
Also this film is LOADED with EXTRAS for the film buff. It has two commentary tracks (one with actors , other from the director). deleted scenes, partly filmed deleted scenes, music videos and a few documentaries (including one that was done for Fox Movie Channel)
With the cult movies gone from the theaters and the Drive INs almost vanished, this film is one you can pop in your DVD player and enjoy. It isnt great art nor great cinema--its just bad jokes, bad taste, crude humor and a good time.
Have a mini DVD film festival using This film, Rocky Horror and Showgirls...Its a MIDNIGHT guilty pleasure-open a can of BUD, smoke a JOINT AND ENJOY YOURSELF

okay okay i didnt want to see this film because it was a happy madison production and the previews looked dull, but i night a friend told me this was a funny movie and by going on that persons review i ppv it. and i almost had tears rolling down my face from the nonstop comedy.. this is a great and funny movie.
if you are looking for a good comedy this year see this one.
RATED R FOR: strong language,drug use,some sexual content,nudity
- Hysterically funny!
     By A5UMUVEV1RUS9 on 2006-08-29
I'd never even heard of this movie until last night when a friend brought it over. He swore it would cheer me up, and not only did it do just that, but I never expected to laugh so hard. An Adam Sandler production (though he himself does not appear in the movie, everyone else you've grown to love from all the Sandler movies is here in good form), Grandma's Boy was so funny that I actually laughed so hard I began to cry. It does have moments of predictability in it, but hey, this is one of those kick-back and watch something funny movies. It's about a guy named Alex who's roommate has been spending their rent at a local "massage" parlor, unknown to Alex until the landlord (Rob Schneider, hilariously) evicts them for not paying rent. Alex has nowhere to go, and of course, this is where everything starts to get increasingly amusing. He winds up having to take his grandmother up on her offer to live with her and her 2 roommates. The grandmother is played by the woman who plays Raymond's mom on "Everyone Loves Raymond" (forgive me, I can't think of her name) and although I despise that show, she was absolutely fantastic in this. Along with having to live with his grandmother, Alex is a 36 year old video game tester who is creating his own game on the side. Typically, a pretty coworker is introduced to oversee the changes on a current game the company is developing. Alex isn't the only one with a thing for her. J.P., a bizarre programmer known for developing one of the most popular video games around, takes a liking to her too. And he also takes Alex's game and claims it to be his own. But will everything work out for Alex? Ah, I bet you can guess (as I easilly did) but Grandma's Boy is absolutely freaking hilarious. If you enjoy Sandler's movie productions, and you enjoy smoking pot (or at least laughing on the same levels as potheads do) then you will just love this movie. Enjoy!
- Hilarious Weed Themed Comedy
     By ACWTCG324VPFD on 2006-01-14
It would be hard for anyone whos ever smoked pot not to enjoy this movie. It does have it's weird side , with a look at the "inside" world of video game designing, but overall I found myself laughing out loud a lot more often than I expected. It'll be a stoner classic along with Half Baked, Harold & Kumar Go 2 Whitecastle, and Chech n Chong. You should see it!
- I don't get stoner humor
     By A2JUR4XQAHSXT6 on 2006-04-10
Surprisingly well written, this is another atempt my main stream media to make dope smoking part of the normal culture.
The plot of the movie is thin. Guy gets kicked out of his apartment since his stoner roomate spent all their rent money on hookers. Guy is now forced to move in with his Grandma.
Weak at best but it makes for an interesting idea. It would have been more plausable if they used the idea from Failure to Launch but you can't have everything.
Sure their are plenty of laughs but parts of the movie just don't work. after all the main character is spending a lot of money on drugs , pot. Yet the amount of money spent on drugs is never brought up. In deed the reason the guy can not get a new apartment is because he can not aford a new apartment, yet he can afford his drug habit.
To complicate matters our hero is a video game tester. Supposedly one of the best and oldest in the business. But he does not come across as a gamer. When he gives hints on past games or is descring one our hero sounds fake and passionateless.
Instead of believing him you feel that he is mocking the sub culture that he is suposed to be a part of.
Even with this the movie does shine. This is done by one hell of a supporting cast. From the Grandma bunch to the Geek crew you have a wonderful mix of pranksters and vetrans. As such even though the plot is thread bare and the hero lack luster you still have a good movie and a fun time.
- Life Changing
     By A3GH4038INCDBP on 2006-04-19
This film is divine revelation. It should incorporated into elementary school education as the core curriculum. An absolute must see movie for anyone that loves simple immature humor at its best and has a pulse. Other than that, it should simply replace the Bible.

- What no gamer should be without.

And to believe I wanted to see Narnia again. Thankfully, my friend hit me in the back of the head and said "Grandma's Boy". The commercials didn't prepare me for the 2+ hours of entertainment. I was hooked from the moment I heard the Galaga theme and giggled every time I saw a the fake game posters in the background. But if stoner jokes and pornography are more your style, the film lacks none of the above. The whole reason this little adventure started was because of Filipino hookers and, of course, the hilarious scene where the three Grandma's have accidently drank pot. But it was all the video game references that really pulled me in.
Hi, I'm a girl, and I give Grandma's Boy an 11 out of 10.
- Very funny

This movie is the best in the last five years comedy wise. It reminded me of the first tiem i watched Friday. Dante is the funniest drug dealer ever.
- Unfunny Dorky-Movie...
     By ALGAO0NLEWVAB on 2006-05-13
The movie is about a bunch of dorks and a monkey.
I rented this movie because I thought it would be funny. But, this movie just wasted my time. It's dull and is not funny at all.
So far, this is the worst movie I've watched this year. @#$$%^&&*!!
- Fanciful but hilarious!
     By A2GBNMYG9P9KCM on 2006-08-04
Ok, I must admit, the first thing I noticed about this movie was the overly fanciful way in which game testers' jobs are portrayed - HAHA!! We WISH we had it that nice... I've been a tester myself for about 3 years and it's a sweet job, but i've never seen an office so highly decorated and flamboyant as the one in this movie. Maybe I'm working in the wrong spot...
Anyway, the movie is still fun as hell to watch. And the three old ladies are absolutely adorable, especially when they're baked on the weed-tea.
Did anyone else notice that the game Alex was designing was a little re-vamp of the alpha stages of the Predator Concrete Jungle game?
Anyway, I thought this movie was funny as hell. A note to aspiring testers who may be watching this movie: don't take the exagerrated portrayance of testers seriously. It's a fun job, but trust me - it's still work - long, mind-numbing work (which is where the weed REALLY helps, actually)
- But It's a SWEET car bed!

This has to be the funniest movie this year that not too many people know about. I had a friend tell me about it and luckily I listened to him. I was laughing throughout the whole movie. This is Allen Covert's breakout movie and I cannot wait to see him in more films. This one keeps me looking out for those HAPPY MADISON films!!!
- Incredibly Funny/But not brightest film
     By A2GVM2T7J83D22 on 2006-09-12
Okay the basic premise *no spoiler* Guy who makes videogames gets evicted, moves in with grandma (Dorris Roberts from everybody loves raymond who I love)and has a bunch of crazy coworkers/friends. they're always getting stoned or drunk and playing videogames. Then there's gotta be the love interest and the dillema that's resolved all in good time. straightforward funny movie. Surprisingly less gratuitous than movies like the Jay and Silent Bob/CLERKS movies. All in all if you're a stoner you'll like this movie. if you're young and don't smoke much, you'll still like this goofy movie. Give it a rent for sure. I gave it a 5 star rating because I laughed out loud throughout the whole movie, and there are TONS of extras on the DVD that'll make you laugh even harded, Nick Swardson is HILARIOUS in a dry sarcastic super funny way! I loved everything on this DVD.
- Probably the First Movie I've Laughed Out Loud to, Alone, Since I was Like 9 Yrs. Old
     By A3TWQPSC7WHRPQ on 2006-12-15
It was weird cracking up to this movie alone, but hey, it was funny. The one-liners, the bizarre personalities (which, by the way, were strangely reminiscient to people I've met and had to deal with as my high school's a/v club's head - probably why I enjoyed Joel Moore's performance as a robot/human self-proclaimed "genius" so much), and odes to some great historical references (Don Knotts, yeah!) are just a few reasons why this movie is pretty much my favorite comedy.
Allen Covert, who, by the way, wins the coolest-last-name contest, plays Alex, a video game tester that is also secretly programming his own video game on his off-time. The movie's premise basically involves following Alex through the transitional period of moving (and, later, living with his grandmother and her two room mates), starting off with a bang in the first scene: addiction to filipino hookers, lost rent money on filipino hookers, and an obscurely foreign (eastern european?) Rob Schneider shattering bongs. Great scene is all I can say.
Following these tragedies, Alex visits the best friend, Jeff, played by Nick Swardson. I don't know why Nick Swardson isn't more well-known. I've loved Nick Swardson's stand-up for a really long time... His conversational, low-key comedic delivery is dead-on and consistently cracks me up.
Then you meet "Dante," and you begin to realize how great this movie is because "Dante" is played by... Dante. Peter Dante (also a cool last name), and I've got to say, you can't help but love Dante and his hair styles throughout the movie.
Joel Moore's performance as J.P. was fantastic, as I said before. The sheer memory of J.P. makes me smile.
Doris Roberts played Alex's grandmother. Shirley Knight and Shirley Jones played Doris Roberts' room mates. I really loved that these three ladies had the guts to do a movie like this. A bonus feature interview with the three of them put into relief how awesome these guys were in teaming up with the rest of the crew to create a genuinely funny movie. They're pretty awesome, especially Shirley Jones (If you're thinking Partridge Family, me too, but don't worry: it was super entertaining to see her play such a sexual role at 70-something in this film).
Linda Cardellini did a really good job of just being a quality female lead. Not to mention her great karaoke scene - I felt those lyrics to "Push It."
Ultimately, this movie is just really well-written, produced, and directed. The crew and cast are basically the same thing in this movie, and you could tell they probably had just as much fun making it as the audience does watching it, which is always a rewarding feeling: the world is as it should be when the makers and the viewers have a certain sympatico.
- Very good comedy but could have been better.
     By APCHVFMSQZVY4 on 2007-02-15
Grandma's boy was just an average comedy with some good and hilarious scenes in it however it wasn't as good as some of Adam Sandler's work since it came from Happy Maddison which is the film company owned by him. The main character is a 35 year old guy who has a gaming obsession and likes smoking pot all day with his friends untill he gets evicted from his appartment cause his roommate spent all his rent money on Fillipino hookers, so he has to move out. He is unable to move back into a friend's house because of the hilarious incident involving the mother walking into the bathroom while he was spanking the monkey so he moves in with his grandma and her two friends, anyway the movie had some great scenes like the dance dance revolution game and that dork who likes talking like a robot which had me cracking up throughout the film so its not as bad as the critics have said, some of the oneliners were pretty funny to "This chick's pu**y smelled like the great depression". I would say if you enjoyed films like Halfbaked or Harold and Kumar then you might like this, I really liked some parts of this film except for the video game sequences since I don't like video games that much.
- Awesome!
     By A1VQFXS2HS0VYX on 2006-01-20
This movie isn't for every one, its increadibly stupid and if your not a fan of stupid humor you won't like it. I myself am a fan of stupid humor and absolutley loved it. for me this movie goes right up there with the broken lizzard movies "super troopers" and "club dread". I really enjoyed the lines in this movie in particular they were so dumb and riddiculus. Comedian Nick Swardson delivers an awesome performance. The movie doesn't have a plot until the last 15 mintues and is very very random and vulgar... if this were any other type of movie it would be horrendus and many people won't like it just cause they see it expecting somthing else.
But if your a fan of movies like "club dread" or "Super troopers" you'll LOVE this movie. I Know did
