Best Price: $29.99 $16.58

Monopoly: Here and Now Edition is a whole new twist on the classic property trading game. Move around the board, collect money, and punish your siblings financially as you have good clean family fun. This updated version includes modern day rents and all-new contemporary game tokens and airports. The 22 new properties salute America's greatest modern destinations from New York City to Honolulu. For the first time ever, Monopoly fans helped design the new board by voting on their favorite landmarks from selected cities.

The back of the box poses the question, "What would the Monopoly game be like if it were invented today?" One could sum up most of the difference in one word: inflation. If you're used to playing the traditional game, you might feel a little woozy handling Monopoly money denominations that start at $100k and top out at $5 million. Players are no longer vying for control of Atlantic city but now the entire U.S., from sea to shining sea. Entry level properties like Baltic and Mediterranean Avenues, which sold for $60 back in the day, have been replaced by Texas Stadium in Dallas and Cleveland's Jacobs Field, each selling for $600,000. The most disturbing piece of property for sale in this game is the White House--one can only assume it's someone's subtle political humor. Railroads have been replaced by airports like O'Hare and JFK. Utilities have been supplanted by cell phone and Internet service. And, of course, the game pieces have all been updated: laptop, cell phone, hybrid car, commuter coffee mug, jumbo jet, super size fries. Gameplay, however, is still the same. The idea is to buy properties, build houses and hotels, and charge other players rent when they land on your land. Thankfully, transactions are still handled in cash and not by some convoluted electronic banking scheme. There's a lot of changes here that will make cynics and traditionalists sour. That's okay. The original game is still available to them. What's interesting about this edition is that it brings back a kind of jaw-dropping thrill--one that made this game a household word in the middle of the Great Depression, when people dreamt of becoming a millionaires. This game will let you dream of becoming a billionaire. --Porter B. Hall MPN: 000402 - UPC: 653569189039

  • A Great Innovation

    By A1SCD2NYTIAQTY on 2007-04-15
The up-dated Monopoly had to come some time, and this made a great game still great to play. I am still a fan of the original, but I enjoy this version too.

I have to agree with some comments about the money being harder to use, and that is true. However, I think it is a minor problem. The extra zeros on all the denominations make things a bit tough to work out, but this is something one gets used to when they play it a few times. The modern highrise buildings, (rather than houses and hotels), are a great little touch, allowing you to build "up" rather than across.

The new locations are great, and the new up-dated pieces are fun. Being made of metal, they are very durable too. The board folds in quarters, which is pretty common these days, (rather than in half with some of the older designs).

Overall, this is a great version of Monopoly and adds something to the experience. Although I would not abandon the original version for it, it is a great game.

  • Reality Beats Nostalgia

    By A276OI0NHBYORX on 2006-12-15
I bought this version of Monopoly as a gift for a child I know who has never played Monopoly.

I considered the classic version to satisfy my own wistful nostalgia, but overcame that urge in the name of having a game actually be educational. My goal is for the child to actually be counting sums of money and making change from larger bills, considering strategic moves, having some sense of finances even if they don't realize they're picking that information up ...

This version is better for kids today. The absurdly low monetary amounts and references to railroads and such in the classic game serve no purpose. Railroads replaced by airports ... it's about time.

Beyond just making it more relevant and changing , the rules of the game are exactly the same, and it's the same fun family game!

  • Fun fun fun!

    By A1URP8MNS1OFJ7 on 2006-11-12
To me, this realistic Monopoly version will blow your mind. You and your family will have so much fun buying the expensive properties. I remember how me and my family were laughing at how fast we ran out of money.

If you ask me, you should buy this and have countless memories of how much fun you had.

JUST A TIP: DON'T BUY ALL THE PROPERTIES YOU LAND ON!

  • Fun for groups, hard if you've memorized the classic edition

    By A24M5LRBU1A7TD on 2007-08-04
As an owner of over 30 monopoly sets, I've played some pretty bad versions. The here & now edition is not one of them. I enjoyed the national locations rather than confinement to a single city that I've never been to. The updated tokens are great, too. I did find myself wondering why PB didn't decided to go global with the locations, though, as the current economy is so globally dependent... Doesn't really detract from the game, though.

One problem I had (and the only reason this gets 4 stars) is that the money was cumbersome if you're very used to the classic denominations. All of my sets except this one use the standard 1-5-10-20-50-100-500 scheme, whether it's dollars, galactic credits, hobbit money, whatever. Switching to large money values is great, but I think they should have at least left the 1-5-etc scheme, so the money could have been $1000, $5000, $10000 etc. This would help tie the old versions with the updated-ness of the new version, allowing a connection between those of us who have been playing the classic sets for years and the people who are just starting.

Overall, nicely executed idea that could have used a bit more globalization and more familiar money.

  • Fun game, but awful box

    By A2HGCSCDMLTB4T on 2007-04-11
I don't know why they didn't make the board simply fold in half. The money holder and plastic hotel/pieces holder is really chintzy, and it's very hard to put everything away when you're done. This game isn't cheap, so they could have taken a bit of extra thought so the game could be put away more effectively. Otherwise a fun updated version of Monopoly that my kids can identify a lot more with, and the money amounts make a lot more sense. I could have done without the product placement in the game pieces though.

  • Great Game & Financial learning tool!!!
    By ARL2K720OZ05Q on 2006-12-01
I bought this game one weekend and my family had a great time. I also think it is a great way to learn about finances and how to work the money you have. I highly recomend this to anyone & especially families with teenagers!

  • Monoply always a great game
    By A17GK9E70O7Y9R on 2007-03-09
I got this for my adult son who gets together with friends for game nights. He loved this modern version. It's really a great concept with all the new pieces.

  • A great game to find out others value standing !
    By A3KC5NVKRLDKDV on 2006-12-03
Just bought this product and played it yesterday with my family. Well this time we actually followed the rules, but it became like if the person owns properties in the first two block(From Go->Free parking) via trading to reach monopoly, and have no more properties at other place, they are pretty much over, as their rent is not even comparable to the 3rd block or the 4th one. I know they each have different land values, but that's how my game turned out to be, with two persons holding the first two block, two more holding the third block, and me with the last block. Maybe I played it wrong, but it would be interesting if they can mixed the properties around a bit ;] also, they should make more houses ! we played to a point where we have no houses, and can't build hotel to replace houses too. I know the rules let you take down house, but it would be nice to have few more houses around ;)

Over all, fun, and you get to see how everyone's value would be while you try to trade properties privately :D

PS. YOU do have to buy all the properties you land on, so you will have something valueable that others may wants.

  • Needs improvement,but still FUN
    By A2KWSDXGXYH4AV on 2007-02-16
This game is a break from the traditional Monopoly game, I like the new spaces and the landmarks from around the Nation. I couldn't help notice a few things that I would have done differently:
1.Make the paper money larger for ease of handling
2.A lazy susan for the deed cards (like in Monopoly Deluxe Edition)
3 The game board be folded in 2 sections instead of 4 (less creases)
    4. make the tokens larger (my friend has big fingers had a hard time moving his token)
Other than this i have to say that the game was still fun and challenging, and really cool to land on known landmarks instead of the traditional street names.
If anything grab this game and leave it wrapped as a collector item (as it was a limited edition!

  • Our sons, not usually fans of board games loved this. Here's why
    By A1ER5AYS3FQ9O3 on 2007-12-17
Imagine this: ice-covered streets, no computer or television access and a pack of snowbound teens. This game literally saved the day. They played it for hours. Then they played it again the next day...and a week later. It has come in handy more times than I can say.

How and why this appeals to them more than traditional MOnopoly is not totally clear but here are some key factors:
    1. It is a total revamp of the old MOnopoly

    2. The cost of living increased 10,0000 fold. There are some different types of cards and new businesses such as Starbucks, Laptop computers and othe items are included. Whatever the reason, any board game that keeps groups of teens safely inside in cold weather and having hours of fun is a major plus!

  • typical monopoly with a little twist
    By AXWOQDNGL7GB3 on 2007-01-03
I like that it is modernized but the dollar amounts are crazy too many zeros and tough for a 6 and 9 year old to keep track of the dollar amounts on their own. Regular monooply is no problem for them.

  • Interesting change
    By A7IPDK0S7FQ9Q on 2007-02-01
Have played the game for over 50 years and this version was a refreshing change. Unfortunately, the increased dollar amounts were frustrating for my young kids (that are just learning addition, money, etc.) as making change, buying properties, etc. seemed way more complex to them. They like the old version with 1's, 5's, 10's, etc. - they didn't enjoy this version as much as I did. That's the only reason it keeps me from giving it 5 stars.

  • Good game BUT too long!
    By A2FZXKEM0OMPME on 2008-01-27
I kind of like the classic version of Monopoly. In the Here and Now edition everything is more pricey but you get more money to start with - this is where I don't like it - You are put in a bad situation because you are handling too many pieces of monopoly money.

The new design of the board is nice and attractive. Also the metal pieces are a plus.

Monopoly is a great game and I love it! only bad thing is it takes a LONG time to finish the game.

Compared to the original version, this version is more colorful, attractive and unlike the plain board of the classic monopoly this one is better in terms of its pictures, and color.
For those who do not own a monopoly: This is a great version to get especially when the price is not significantly higher than the classic. You will love the colors.
OH I almost forgot... the modern attractions/ property is great also! Instead of the old properties (which some do not exist anymore) you get modern places such as Times Square, Fenway Park, and JFK airport.

  • A fun new twist on an old favorite, the money part is HARD!
    By AEWYUPCNDV7HY on 2007-11-01
I really like this new twist on an old favorite. My children, 13 and 6 enjoy playing this game immensely. The pieces are fun and recognisable such as Starbucks, McDonalds Fries, New Balance shoes, a jet, etc. The places are also recognisable such as Times Square and Wakiki Beach. The game concept is pretty much the same, with the spaces having the same function as the original Monopoly. The only part we really found confusing was the money part. Especially when you are having to pay 10% tax, or mortgage several properties. It can get confusing with dealing with millions at a time. I wished they had kept the money part the same as the original, as millions of dollars at a time serve no purpose.

  • Fun, but no major changes
    By A33Z9LNVTRSVJW on 2008-03-03
First of all, I love Monopoly, although I don't play it anymore because I own the FAR SUPERIOR Monopoly: the Mega Edition. Aside from Mega Monopoly, however, Monopoly Here & Now is my favorite version of the classic property-buying game.

Monopoly Here & Now is the same game as the original. Everything is different, but the game is still the same. Popular properties from all over America have take the place of Boardwalk, St. Charles Place, Illinois Ave., etc., Utilities are now Service Providers, Railroads are now Airports, the Chance/Community Chest cards are different, the tokens have changed, and - this is what people love - you now get million dollar bills in lieu of hundreds, hundred-thousands in lieu of tens, etc. But the game is still the same, despite the modern makeover.

This is a double-edged sword. You're getting what you know with a modern look to it, but I wish that if Parker Bros. are going to make a new version of the game, that they would at least make some major changes.

The cards are essentially the same. Each card was taken, the amount changed proportionally (if there's money involved), the location names, if any, have been changed, and a new picture of Mr. Monopoly has been added. Cards such as those that send you to jail and get you out free have remained the same, plus an added caption telling you why you were incarcerated. Even the buildings are the same. Tax squares make you pay an equivalent amount to the old game, but since we're now dealing with millions, you will either have to pay $750,000 (Credit Card Interest - Luxury Tax was $75; see the similarity?) or $2 million/10% instead of $200/10% on Income Tax.

Still, you can't argue with fun. But if you want something different, try Mega Monopoly.

Mega Monopoly is somewhat the same game, but it has more properties, Bus Tickets, a Speed Die, Skyscrapers, Depots, etc. If you want a different (and WAY better) Monopoly experience, Mega Monopoly is what you want. If you simply want to keep playing classic Monopoly, but with a different look, buy Monopoly Here & Now.

Have fun! I hope you enjoy this product or Mega Monopoly (I prefer the latter, it's much more fun)!

  • Don't like it!
    By AYB4ELCS5AM8P on 2008-04-08
Don't like this because of the property choices. Letting America "chose" is just basically pandering to the mindless masses. And the most populated areas are guaranteed to win.

There are a lot of sports stadiums. Why? You can't build houses in them, I know, I know, you build next to them, but I would rather have bona fide places. I hate these sports stadiums. Worse are natural wonders, who's going to build houses in the middle of nowhere? It would have been best to let a professional game designer design the game. I made a mistake when I bought this on sale, I should have known that it was on sale because it was poor selling.

My second gripe is that the millions of paper money value is confusing. You have inflation, blah, blah, blah, but buying a stadium for a few million bucks? That's not realistic either.

I guess the only saving grace of this is it introduces different American landmarks to a young generation of kids.

My final verdict is that they should redo this and give some proper thought to what properties to include. Times Square, Beverly Hills, Rodeo Drive, Silicon Valley, etc. are a few good places to start.

  • Like the original better
    By AIKDNHV17RWVC on 2007-01-09
It was too weird to count the higher bills. I think that is the only thing I didn't like about it and 1 million and 100,000 bills were almost the exact same color. I did like the property choices and the community chest and chance.

  • YOU could own Las Vegas!
    By A376SEAKKHL6E4 on 2007-01-09
We bought several of these new Monopoly games for relatives for Christmas. I was intrigued by the new playing pieces and thought it would give our grandkids a kick to play with a computer piece or a Starbucks cup. I am not sure if the kids liked the new look or not, but the adults did! We especially liked the new properties ( I bought part of Las Vegas and the White House!) and the new rental amounts. It blew my mind to have to pay millions in rent....which finally resulted in losing to my grand son, to whom this was not such a big deal.
I would highly recommend this new version of Monopoly to anyone who loves the game. You too can be an inside trader or own Times Square!

  • Fantastic!
    By A2SJSSR70X0D6E on 2007-01-12
Our family enjoyed this game so much! We just love the new, up to date version. The ages of my family range from 19 years old to 49 years old. We love the new Monopoly!

  • Missing Peices & Board is very busy!!
    By A3NCCL95WK6SKE on 2007-01-19
We didn't receive 2 game peices, the Labradoodle and also the airplane. We have tried to call the 888 # provided but it is always busy, any time day or night. We also felt the board itself is too busy with too many graphics, should be simpler. Not jazzed about the loosing the banker tray as well. It was much easier to use with the old design. It is a great concept though, and it's about time the basic game got updated.

  • Monopoly in a new light
    By A1OV32USCZVKJM on 2007-01-20
Monopoly Here & Now Edition renewed my interest in Monopoly. It uses modern landmarks such as Disney World and Las Vegas for properties, and the currency is in thousands and millions instead of hundreds. The Chance and Community Chest cards are updated, as are the game pieces. The game pieces include a laptop, cell phone, hybrid car, labradoodle, jet plane, and Starbucks coffee. I still enjoy the classic Monopoly game, but this game puts a new spin on an old favorite.

  • good family fun
    By A1AHN3H18CPYQH on 2007-02-13
Overall great product and fun to play. I am still a fan of the original, but it is noce to see the new twists and turns. I would have liked to see a better correlation of some of the properties (geographic or otherwise) instead of being the "most popular are the most expensive". As others have said the money is sometimes hard to keep track of with all the zero's. I do enjoy it still.

  • A Great Update!!
    By A2M5FI4CB6VUXF on 2007-04-19
This game is much more relevant than ever before. The prices are higher, the penalties are different and the properties are brand new. As a Texan, I was sad to see Texas Stadium be one of the cheaper properties but oh well. It was still very cool to see Texas represented.

The game play is much the same as you'd expect from Monopoly. In that respect, nothing's really changed. But the updated costs and what not really do make the game more interesting. It's 2 million for this or 500,000 for that. This not only allows you to pretend to be a millionaire. It also allows my 9 year old to practice his math with bigger numbers. Games are fun... family time is fun... learning is fun. Monopoly here and now gives you all of that and more!

  • Great game for the whole family!
    By ABQZK414I3HPK on 2007-10-23
I got this game free with my purchase and thought I would give it away for a gift. My son asked to keep it, and I am so glad he did! We really had a great time playing! It seemed so much less "cluttered" as we played due to the way they designed the new game. My kids were even noting places and we had great conversations about the different locations that they had on the board. I would definitely recommend this game even if you already have the older version like we do!

  • Updated Monopoly
    By A2DW4M857L3N35 on 2007-01-09
Often the "sequel" to anything is a disappointment, but with this new Monopoly it's a nice surprise. It's truly current in the playing pieces, the properties and the money amounts. It's still a great family game. It's like someone put new canvas on your favorite pair of shoes, but only the outside is changed, the inside is as comfortable as ever. I'd highly reccommend this game. It's become our new family favorite!

  • A New America!
    By A1XZAHSQXPZUJL on 2007-01-09
While the Monopoly concept doesn't change in this version, the updates to the properties is great. There are no more railroads, just airports. Using the shoe as a game piece is replaced by a laptop. Actually knowing the properties you're playing for makes the game a fun time for friends and family.

  • very fun for the whole family!
    By AM4IIDYCKAL1S on 2007-01-15
We have enjoyed this atleast once a week since xmas!! 11 year old boy LOVES it!! thinks its pretty cool to own more realestate that his ole mom!
the best monopoly game Iv ever played!!

  • Monopoly Here & Now Edition
    By A1EHOPJXICCQ1B on 2007-01-19
This game is super! I could play it all day. There are airports instead of railroads, cell phone and internet service are the utilities, and the monetary value is in millions! Avaliable for purchase are things like Disney World, Golden Gate Bridge, White House, Fenway Park, and, the new boardwalk, Times Square.

All of the properties were selected by US citizens. Votes were cast regionally for a landmark to represent the area. The properties were placed around the board in order of percent of regional population that voted for it over other things.

  • Meeker Review
    By A3PVAYYPCILNSM on 2007-05-12
I really love monopoly because its fun and educational at the same time. I mean, I can add, subtract, multiply and divide in my head so much faster because I played this game so much. The thing is. I dont really play anymore. I bought it because I kind of collect different editions of monopoly now. You should definitely get on if you are intersested.

  • Dr. Evil should have bought this!
    By A13NNJLGQGJWZK on 2007-10-16
This is a standard monopoly game; and while every monopoly game has a theme or twist to it, I have found this version to be extremely educational. Not only do prices, interest, and income finally reflect the new milenimum, but also the player pieces and property names.
