  • Great MP3 alternative for little ones who want to be big!

    By A26WTZ5L07S3WR on 2006-09-25
I bought this for my 5 year-old for her birthday. She absolutely loves it and mastered the operation within minutes. Downloading stories from the website was a little tricky, but in the end was worth the time ($1.99 for most stories). Copying songs from CDs was the best feature. You can pick and delete the songs you want. You can even assign a picture to each song or to a collection of songs. For example, for High School Musical, I assigned a school bus; for the Aquamarine soundtrack, a starfish; Princess and the Pauper, a princess. Anyway, you get the idea. She also really likes the story reading function. I look forward to trying out the speaker/boom box accessory. The headphones seemed bulky to me, but my 5 year old loves how they fit and they don't slide off of her head!

I gave it 5 stars even though we had to return the first one. The play/pause button didn't work consistently, even right out of the box. It is marketed as a "kid tough" design, but we may have just had a bad player, as the replacement one seems to work fine, even after dropping it a few times. I also recommend the blue case; the pink one is very pale pink and all of the ones in store were already scuffed up and dirty.

  • Does not play MP3, only proprietary fisher price format

    By A33BLHQF6RGSVI on 2006-11-19
The actual player itself seems to be quite usable for my four year old.
However, for the parent the software is crap. Here is why:

    1. It only runs on windows. If you have mac, linux, freebsd you are out of luck.
    2. The player only plays fisher price proprietary format music files. So sorry
all those MP3 files you have spent years ripping from your CDs will not work.
Time to re rip them into FP3 format, that is if you can still read the CDs.

This is yet another example of anti-consumer lock in products that are
    unfortunately becoming more common.

  • If it worked, I'd give it 5 stars

I bought this for my 4 year old daughter for Christmas. She loved it. I read the reviews about how difficult the software was and took the time to transfer her favorite songs to it before she received it on Christmas morning.
The software is annoying. It does seem unnecessary to make you do a fp3 format. I think that may be so you can't use the songs/stories you download from their store with other programs.

I bought two stories and a song from their store so my daughter would have some stories she was familiar with when she first opened it. I was disappointed at the lack of selection. Their site might have about 50 stories. I had not heard of many of them. They also had about 40-50 albums and you have to click on each album to see if it has the song you are looking for. I did not see a way to search for a song.

I was then annoyed they have a minimum order of $4.95. Songs are .99 each and books were 2.99 each. Albums were typically $9.99 each. The download was VERY fast. Although, you did have to download each item separately.
I did not use the picture editor. I expected it would be more trouble than it was worth. I found the folder with the icon pictures in it in the programs directory and am quite certain you could just move files there if you wanted to add images you already had. I didn't have time before Christmas to test it out.

The stories and songs you buy from their site come with their own preset images that are appropriate.

It is frustrating that it will only convert music from a CD. You can write music to a cd and then read it back into the program. I put about 20 songs on a cd and it could only only convert about half of them. I didn't take time to investigate.

Finally, getting to my point. Christmas morning my daughter was tickled to get up and put on the headphone and hit two buttons and heard her favorites song (Brown Eyed Girl). How did Santa know?

Anyway, after opening all of her gifts, she made the full circle and went back to play more songs and it would not play. The play button just ceased to work. I replaced the batteries and turned it on and off a few times. I reconnected it to my pc and could play the songs directly off the player through the software. I could hear the click when I would page through the songs so I know the sound on the player was working. I double checked the volume was turned all the way up. Nothing happened. After fiddling with it for a minute, the forward button quit working.

I'm returning it. I have not yet decided if I want to exchange it or just buy an inexpensive full mp3 player. The ONLY reason I would consider exchanging it is the icons make it easier for children that cannot yet read to pick a song. However, I'm really worried the next one would break again and this time it would be just after when I could return it.

The other reason I am leaning toward a MP3 player is that it irks me that you cannot buy a power supply for it. Since you can purchase speakers for it, I had planned to put it in my daughter's room. We play music for her when she goes to bed every night. I wouldn't want to replace the batteries (or recharge them) multiple times a week.

Of course, if I return it, I'll probably be stuck with the purchase made from fisher price for the stories and song.

One last note - the user manual says to only use alkaline batteries

  • Best player on the market, the only one available, for toddlers.

    By AZHMVORV4ET6C on 2006-10-28
Most of the features were great! It is very easy to use for my daughter and myself. Amazon is misleading, the FP3 players requires 2 "AAA", not 2 "AA" as advertised. Battery life is very short, there is no AC adapter or recharger available, such as on a Leapster. We took the FP3 on our RV trip and with all that road noise it was a blessing. The power switch on the back of the player is very sensitive, my daughter tends to like holding the player and making menu selections, and a lot of times inadvertently turns off the player. Quite frustrating.

  • Excellent for travel

    By A2F8FNZJ4DRFVG on 2006-11-14
My just-turned-three-year-old loves her FP3 player! She often visits her dad who lives three hours away so I got this to provide another entertainment option in the car and on the plane. The story and song options on the website are wonderful! Classics like Goldilocks and Dr. Seuss with newer stories also such as Curious George. She loves it! The song options are great too. A lot of the pop music we hear on the radio is her favorite and Fisher Price offers a lot of those original songs with a children's choir accompaniment. It's very cute. I highly recommend this product. Expect to spend an additional $20 in the Fisher Price online store post purchase. It comes with a few songs and stories but not the selection most would choose.

  • Great For Little Hands
    By AFJM0JUN0FC3M on 2006-11-07
This player is everything it's cracked up to be. It's tough, and VERY easy to load, and I am no tech junkie. Far from it actually. So, once I got the program loaded on the computer, it was a snap to learn. My 4 yr old daughter ust loves it. She'll insist on taking it in the car whenver we're in there, and also will listen to it at home just the same. The only problem (and it's minor) is that the battery life isn't that great. I had to buy rechargable batteries for the amount of use she gives it. Totally worth the investment.

  • We Love This
    By AGJETSRT6S4QU on 2006-11-26
My 5 year old twins wantd "iPods" for their birthday - like their big brother. We got them each these - they LOVE them and so do we. We broused through the thousands of music files on our computer - and burned their favorites to a CD - then it was very easy to get them to the fp format. They use it a lot and are thrilled with their "iPods" - my only complaint is the foam padding on the headphones falls off a lot - we finally had to superglue them on - otherwise it is awesome!

  • Good idea, but needs some improvements
    By A122865E1MRK6I on 2006-12-12
I got this for my 3-year-old for her birthday, and she really loves it. It's easy to use and figure out--it took her almost no time to know what the buttons did. Putting music on was easy because we just used the CDs she already had. The two major flaws with it are:
    1. It EATS batteries like crazy!! It takes four AA batteries, and within just a few hours they were dead.
    2. There is no way to find a track on the system other than hitting the forward button until you find the song you're looking for. For a 3-year-old who keeps insisting on hearing a specific song, it's very frustrating. Also, when you turn on it returns to the beginning of the list of songs so you have to scroll through again.
It's a great idea for kids, but it would be much better if they had a rechargable battery and a way to scroll through the songs to select the one you want.

  • Player is OK, PC software is useless
    By A97XLTEBGJUNF on 2007-01-16
This was a Christmas gift for my 3 year old. She loves it. If she didn't, it would have been returned.
They were not kidding about the FP3 player, it's not just a cute sound alike of MP3. This unit has a proprietary sound format. You CANNOT load ANY of your childs .mp3 files on it.
I had already ripped all my daughters Scholastic read-along audio books, but this thing forced me to rip them all over again. What a waste of time.
The only way you can add mp3 tracks is to convert them to .WAV, then burn them to a standard CD, then rip them again using the Fisher Price proprietary SW.
The SW does not allow you to sort by folders, or anything, even on the PC. They seem to spend all effort on the SW getting you to buy their stories online.
To make things worse, the CDDB lookup feature searches the internet by disc ID, so if you are ripping from an MP3 converted CD, you will have to retype all your titles.
Also, they worry too much about DRM - like pirating 3 year old stories is a big problem. It's just another hassle.
Skip this toy (actually, run from it) if you plan on using any mp3 content for your little one.

  • BAD TOY cute to look at, software is miserable, locks up
    By A2QVIZ8DR9R6NQ on 2007-01-14
My wife is repackaging this failed christmas gift as I type. The unit is cute, but the software to make it work is nothing but miserable and ultimately completely nonfunctional.

For starters, let me say that both my wife and I are experienced MP3 player users from multiple manufacturers. We know how to use these things. Our computers are new.

The software provided with the unit is miserable.
The "store" where you can buy FP3's online is only accessible after you download and install the software update. It took 10 tries to complete the download, which would just lock up and fail each time - and because you are accessing the downloads through their software rather than a web site, it cannot be refreshed, and does not pick up where it left off in the case of an interruption. The computer has to be restarted and the whole process starts over.
When that was finally finished, my wife bought three stories. Only 1 was able to be downloaded. A confirmation email was sent that we had bought 3 stories, and that we could download them up to 5 times, but nowhere did it say where to go if all the items purchased did not download as whey should have. Only after lengthy consultations over the phone with a very nice customer rep did we go to a totally separate company website (nothing related to Fisher Price) to get the missing items we had paid for.

Shortly after this, the player spontaneously erased itself. Great.

This morning, we plugged it in to put more music on it, and the software recognizes it as a new player only, which needs to be registered. The registration file on the FP3 player cannot be found, probably because it is already registered!! And thus, we cannot ever add more songs to it.

Also the software has provisions for playlists, but the player cannot access them as discrete, selectable playlists.

  • Not Impressed with software
    By A28JLGJQVRX8RW on 2007-12-19
My kids received this item as a gift for their birthday. They loved the preloaded songs and stories so I thought I would download so more songs off the Fisher Price website and install the software. Unfortunately, this was not an easy task. I ended up spending 3 hours on the phone with customer service and not getting any answers. Customer service ended up sending me another FP3 player that had the same problems as the first one.
    Pros:
    Durable
    Fun
    Educational

    Cons:
Software would not recognize FP3 player (saying device not connected)
Software kept giving me the error message (G:/access denied)
Software would not recognize internet connection but I could use the internet just fine.

A month later, I finally figured it all out and got the software to work after reinstalling the software numerous times, etc. I found out that the administrator name on your computer has to be EXACTLY the same as the user name you put in when you install the software. Find out what your administrator name is in XP by clicking on start>control panel>user accounts. This is one reason the software would not work.

The second is that when you plug in the device, your computer will pop up the device with several FP3 icons, playlist icon, and readme file. If you delete all the FP3 icons located in the popup, the device will run fine. Who would have thought of this, but it works! Customer service was very nice but did not offer much for solutions.

Overall the kids love the player but Fisher Price needs to work out the bugs in the software, with headphones not being durable, and FP3 format. They could also improve the troubleshooting section in their website. My Ipod isn't even this difficult!

  • Maybe it's Kid Tough, but it's not User Friendly
    By A3TGSEA7M56MH3 on 2006-12-26
Having had this player for less than a week, this review is based on limited use but seems to be consistent with some of the other comments I have read.

    Pros:

The only thing I can really come up with is that it is simple enough for a 3 year old to use. As for its toughness, read below.

    Cons:
    1) Same complaint as others regarding the foam on the headphones coming off. It took about 3 minutes to notice that one.
    2) What is the purpose of forcing us to use the "FP3" file format? Maybe it's some attempt to cut down on piracy. But the flaw in that is that you can still burn whatever MP3 tunes you want into regular CDs and then re-rip them into FP3......it's just very annoying. So again I ask what is the purpose of this?!!
    3) It goes through batteries very quickly. Not a big deal if you have rechargeable batteries, but it seems like a lot of power is being used by such a simple device.
    4) To me this one is HUGE and has been noted by others - - You can't search for a song! Granted, I don't expect a 3 year old to be able to read and find Hot Potatoes and then navigate over to find Ski Patrol to the Rescue after that. But I would expect Fisher Price to build that feature in so that the 3 year old's parents....who will constantly be asked to find specific songs on a regular basis.......have that ability. What good is giving us the flexibility to upgrade to 1GB of storage, and therefore place hundreds of songs on the player, if you have to push fast forward (see #5 below) hundreds of times to get to the song your kid wants?
    5) On it's 2nd full day of use yesterday it locked up when my wife was trying to fast forward through a bunch of songs to get to one that the boy wanted to hear. I don't know if it is related to pushing FF a bunch of times, but either way it froze up and I had to remove the batteries to shut it down.

Considering the price of this item, it seems a bit lacking in basic and necessary features. I would think that Fisher Price could somehow address this with a software update, but I may not be patient or trusting enough to wait and find out. I'm not sure any 3 year old really needs an MP3 player; however, I may seriously have to consider returning this player and getting him a cheap, basic, "grown up" player from Creative, Sandisk, etc. Even if they're not "kid tough", you can buy a couple for the price of this so-so player. Besides....what are the odds that the kid will lose it before they break it anyway?

  • Not So Kid Tough
    By A3VYDYUENVFD0I on 2006-12-31
My 2 girls love them and we also purchased the speaker accessories as well. It's 5 days after Christmas and I have the same general complaints as many others.

    1) Headphones are horrible. Once the foam covers come off...you will be asked every 6 minutes to put them back on again.

    2) I have one player that won't play music at all now. It will play stories but won't play music. The music button just simply stopped working.

    3) Speaker accessory for one of the players now sounds like static. Yes...we changed the batteries as well. A feature that is lacking on the speaker accessory is the ability to plug them in to AC power. They are battery-operated only.

I'll be returning one of each of the players and speaker accessories today.

  • Not quite what I had hoped.
    By AS4UM3VTL8U9X on 2007-06-20
I bought two of these for my children last Christmas. My daughter who's 4 likes to listen to the music but my son who's 6 isn't that thrilled with it. The foam pieces to the headphones fell off within the first few days. On my daughter's unit, the buttons stick and won't progress to the next song without really working it. I can't tell you how many times we've had to replace batteries as they don't seem to last very long. Transferring the songs isn't that bad, but it's a bit tedious to add icons to each song, especially if you want the same icon for all the songs within your child's favorite CD.

All in all, it's not a bad toy. I just wish it had an a/c adapter.

  • My Daughter Loves It
    By ASD1KRD3046TZ on 2006-12-06
I think that it is great. My only problem is that it cannot read advanced CDs (CDs with DVD or CD-Rom) and unfortunately, almost all of Disneys CDs are like this so there is a whole lot of childrens music this excludes.

  • Could be better
    By A3H3KVQ1LFO68U on 2006-12-29
I got this for my three year old daughter for Christmas so we haven't had it long. She loves it, so I'm glad I got her an mp3 player. However, I really wish this had a rechargable battery like other mp3 players. It burns through batteries really quickly which is annoying. Also, the headphones suck. The sound quality is very bad and because the volume is fairly low (which is great), if there's any background noise, you won't be able to hear the music.
I like it, but I'm wondering if I should have gone with the iPod shuffle or any other type of cheap mp3 player.

  • Just a little work would have made it perfect !
    By AQZ3YR7Z5ZJ72 on 2007-01-15
I just purchased two of the Fisher Price Kid Tough FP3 players one for each of my grand-daughters that live with me. This little player is great for kids their ages, 5 and 7. The only complaints that I have about the player are 1. the file type is proprietary (that means that it will only play file type FP3 which can ONLY be played on this player). In order to get songs, you must download them from Fisher Price's website (and pay), or convert songs on CD's that you own with the included software. Why Fisher Price chose a proprietary file type, I can only guess (my guess is that they want to sell you songs). I found that you can download mp3 songs from the net and then burn them on a CD and then convert them to FP3 files. It would have been a lot easier if Fisher Price had just used the mp3 format for these players. The second problem is the volume on the players. Fisher Price chose to make the volume very low even at it's highest setting. I'm sure they did this for a reason, to save our children's ears. But, when you are traveling in a car, the road noise makes it difficult to hear the songs well. At any rate, I think the player is worth the money that you have to pay for it. It's quite tough so that it can take kid abuse. I would recommend it to any parent who wanted a player for a child under 10 years old.

  • Not Mac compatible
    By A6EWHKR17NI00 on 2007-02-23
Our biggest complaint is that it is NOT Mac compatible. The only way to download new songs is to use the software that I cannot use on my Mac. Daddy has to take it all to work and do it there. Otherwise, it's a great idea. My 6 yo daughter asked for an iPod but we thought we'd start her off with this and she is loving it. Pros: Easy to use, large buttons, not to busy, comfortable headphones. Cons: not Mac comp., battery life short, needs a belt clip.

  • It's a step in the right direction
    By A2SGS2GWEY4PXS on 2007-03-29
We got this for my little sister who's 6 for christmas. She was soo happy to get one, and so was I because I had been forced to share my Ipod with her in the car or any other time she spotted me using it. It comes with two stories and 6 songs.
    Pros:
The VOLUME!! My parents had originally thought about getting her and Ipod shuffle but after I pointed out that she abuses the volume control on mine,(turns it up too loud)getting her own wouldn't be a good idea. The volume goes high enough for car rides and safe enough for at home use as well.
It doesn't seem to eat up batteries either. We're just now having to replace them, but then again she forgets to bring it in the car and only uses it with the seperatly sold stereo speakers.
It's cute, it's pink like mine and it's easy to use for kids who can't read yet.
    CONS:
The softwear is a bit annoying. You can only add songs by either purchasing them from their website or burning them off a CD. This was annoying because I couldn't tranfer the songs for her off my Ipod on to hers without wasting a CD. But it wasn't so bad to have to do, just annoying. We haven't bought any stories or songs off their site, and probably won't. Although the stories are great for bedtime (with FP3 stereo)she doesn't care for them much and since she listens to the music I get for her, she's past the age of "I have two cats" (one of the songs included) and likes songs more upbeat songs like "Brother for sale" by the Olsen Twins.
It's alittle bulky. It's not so easy for her to carry the player with her like i can with my Ipod. The headphone are very bulky and big compared to the player itself. So even if there was a time she remembered to take it along in the car, it wasn't something that could easily be tucked away. We're considering buying smaller headphones since the volume control doesn't effect the headset.

  • Buyer Beware customer service lacks alot!
    By A3MV2B2ZYQB1I2 on 2007-05-30
My daughter received this player as a gift for her birthday and she loves it HOWEVER, I spent over 3 hours with 4 different customer service reps from Fisher-Price in one day alone trying to trouble shoot software installation problems. The story changed with each person I spoke with. As per their request I unistalled the software numerous times and have now used up my 5 installs of the software! So...when I get a new computer I will no longer be able to load any songs and therefore be unable to use the player. Think long and hard before purchasing this player. In the long run for the money you will spend you will be better off buying a real MP3 player and NOT the fp3. The player also after only one day of use is marked up.

  • I like it... can overcome the 2 problems I encountered
    By A3387OX8D8TDRN on 2007-11-05
I like this product for my 4 year old, 3 year old nephew and will even give one to my 2 1/2 year old at Christmas. Although it is annoying that you can ONLY download purchased songs and stories from the Fischer Price site and from your own CD collection, I found a way around that. I purchase songs they like and burn them to a CD. Then I go from there. The sound is not too loud, probably a safety thing, which makes it difficult to hear on an airplane. I found that when we used different store-bought headphones my son could hear much better and was very happy. I was able to delete all the "baby songs" that are on there, and he gets very excited every time I add a new song that he likes.

  • Doesn't Run on VISTA
    By A34KAMUR6NLU2F on 2008-01-25
This product doesn't run on VISTA Operating System. FP's customer service was nice but I wish this was mentioned during download, online at the FP web site or on the box. My daughter loves her 'kid iPod' but is disappointed that her favorite songs aren't included.

  • I bought 3 of these...
    By A3OF9KAHIOAMSY on 2006-12-09
for my kids. They love them and wear them around the house while they play. The only thing I see as a flaw is that the software was not as user friendly as downloading songs from ITunes (when I download to my IPod shuffle). I wish there was more variety with the stories and music, too. I'm sure Fisher Price will add more variety as time goes on.

  • I LOVE THIS TOY!!!!
    By A1PNB6S758HIA6 on 2006-12-16
My 5 year old daughter is not easy to please and gets bored easily but she LLOOOVVEES this toy. SHe actually likes listening to the books just as much as the music so I don't feel guilty at all letting her listen as much as she wants. She is completely obsessed with it and it gives her a sense of pride b/c its her "ipod." I bought the speakers too so she's not walking around with earphones all the time so it doubles as a stereo for her room. I highly recommend this.

  • Kid Tough???
    By A1CFTQ4TKO78C3 on 2006-12-21
My daughter just received this item for Christmas- a few days early and already the headphones are broken. The pads that are on the headphones came off, and WILL NOT stay on. Without the pads, the headphones are very hard. I am pleased with the overall function of the product, but how can this be kid tough if they break within the first hour??

  • My son and my niece love this item!
    By A3FU8OYCWDFDA5 on 2006-12-29
My son and my niece (both 3 1/2) just love this toy. They received their FP3 players for Christmas, and have not put them down since. It didn't take long for them to figure out how to work the controls, and they are completely able to handle this device on their own. Uploading songs is easy. I have yet to purchase songs from the website...I just transfer from our own collection of CDs. My son listens to it in the car, but recently took it inside the mall on an after-Christmas shopping spree. He was content for almost 4 hours with this thing. Love it!!!

  • Not bad - not that great
    By A3A2S69JXYBWO8 on 2007-01-18
The unit has taken a fairly high degree of impacts - and no issues there. Music sound is clear - and the limit on the volume is great. The issues I have is that songs must be converted to a new format, which can take time - and the idea of Icons for songs is great - but highly limited. My daughter is just begining to understand the labels, but with limited options - they are not logical. Also - I cannot catagorize the music - so you may want to only load a small number of songs - as you have to scroll through them.

  • Technology and Children
    By A6VLK7OQTFTJ8 on 2007-01-22
I got the FP3 player for my 5 year old granddaughter because I didn't want her to be left out of being able to listen to music (her sister got an Ipod Shuffle). She loves it! The headset is perfect for her, the controls are easy for her to manage and understand. She can listen to the same music as her big sister (age 10). Technology isn't only for preteens or teenagers. Kids are smarter these days and are exposed to more technology than ever. They see their parents, siblings, and grandparents using computers, mobile phones, Ipods, and video games. They like the cool stuff too! They shouldn't be left out. I only have one suggestion. Place a clip on the back of the FP3 player for kids to clip on to their clothing instead of hanging around their neck. It gets in the way when they are dancing because it flops around!

  • A good idea that still needs a bit of work
    By A15D2X8MICR2VQ on 2007-04-21
We found this on clearance at Target for $25. For that price, we thought we'd give it a try, so far we're mostly pleased. The software wasn't too difficult to load and since my daughter has a good amount of Fisher Price CD's, transferring them went fairly smoothly. We haven't bought any music or stories from the website, so I can't comment on that aspect.

She picked up on how to operate it fairly quickly and really liked how different songs had different icons so she could find her favorites. I like the volume control on the headphone and how they're oversized so they don't get lost. The player seems fairly study and is nice and thick for smaller hands.

However, after we replaced the batteries for the first time, the problems started. When we clicked on the play/pause button, we could hear the click, but not the song. The scrolling at the top of the screen indicated the songs were playing, but no music, even with different headphones. My husband ending up reloading the software and redoing the whole download. The player now works ok, but the play/pause button has to be pressed hard and at a kind of angle. For the price we paid, I can live with that, but it's still frustrating. It's a good idea from Fisher Price, but I think there's room for improvement.

I bought this for my 18 month old daughter who loves music to listen to while we are waiting at the doctors office, during ballet class, in a long line.....its been wonderful. I downloaded some of her cds she listens to in the car pretty easily. And I LOVE that you can choose a picture to go along with each song so that non readers can skip through to the songs they like. It is light weight, super durable, my 5 year old really loves it too. I wish it had a shuffle option, but basically its perfect.
