Great Start Fisher Price, But The Music Downloading is a PAIN By A1W1GVRW6MDSO8 on 2006-11-01
I bought this for my three year-old son and here is what I think of it.
The pros:
1. The volume maximum is not so loud that it will hurt their ears if they turn it up all the way.
2. The construction is sturdy, good for rough and tumble pre-schoolers who like to drop and throw things.
3. The large buttons and icon navigation are very easy for a 3 year-old to understand.
4. The "create your own icon" feature is a nice touch for odd songs.
5. The ability to choose stories or song from the get go is a nice option.
6. The headphones actually fit little heads unlike the ones that come with those cheap portable cd players you might have purchased for your little one in the past.
7. The Fisher Price web site is filled with reasonably priced music and stories appropriate for the pre-school age group.
The cons:
That being said, there is one large flaw: importing MP3s! I spoke with the customer support staff at Fisher Price and they said it was a legal issue with the owners of the MP3 format. I don't care!! Work it! To import the music and stories you already have on your computer, this is what you will have to do:
1. Burn all of the music and stories you would like to import onto a cd.
2. Copy the songs/stories from the cd to the Fisher Price FP3 software.
3. Transfer each song/story to the FP3 player.
4. Type in title and artist information for each song/story.
5. Choose an icon, or create an icon from scratch.
6. Assign the icon to the story/song.
This is a huge pain! Just filling my son's FP3 player took over 3 hours.
A word of advice to those of you buying the FP3 player as a gift, burn all of the music/stories onto a cd ahead of time! Block out a few hours to program the FP3 player Christmas morning or after the birthday party, or better yet, do it all ahead of time so that you give the gift ready to go out of the gift box to avoid a tantrum (yours & theirs).
Kudos Fisher Price on developing a nice portable digital music system for pre-schoolers. I blow a raspberry at you for the painful process you make parents go through.
Maybe it's Kid Tough, but it's not User Friendly By A3TGSEA7M56MH3 on 2006-12-27
Having had this player for less than a week, this review is based on limited use but seems to be consistent with some of the other comments I have read.
Pros:
The only thing I can really come up with is that it is simple enough for a 3 year old to use. As for its toughness, read below.
Cons:
1) Same complaint as others regarding the foam on the headphones coming off. It took about 3 minutes to notice that one.
2) What is the purpose of forcing us to use the "FP3" file format? Maybe it's some attempt to cut down on piracy. But the flaw in that is that you can still burn whatever MP3 tunes you want into regular CDs and then re-rip them into FP3......it's just very annoying. So again I ask what is the purpose of this?!!
3) It goes through batteries very quickly. Not a big deal if you have rechargeable batteries, but it seems like a lot of power is being used by such a simple device.
4) To me this one is HUGE and has been noted by others - - You can't search for a song! Granted, I don't expect a 3 year old to be able to read and find Hot Potatoes and then navigate over to find Ski Patrol to the Rescue after that. But I would expect Fisher Price to build that feature in so that the 3 year old's parents....who will constantly be asked to find specific songs on a regular basis.......have that ability. What good is giving us the flexibility to upgrade to 1GB of storage, and therefore place hundreds of songs on the player, if you have to push fast forward (see #5 below) hundreds of times to get to the song your kid wants?
5) On it's 2nd full day of use yesterday it locked up when my wife was trying to fast forward through a bunch of songs to get to one that the boy wanted to hear. I don't know if it is related to pushing FF a bunch of times, but either way it froze up and I had to remove the batteries to shut it down.
Considering the price of this item, it seems a bit lacking in basic and necessary features. I would think that Fisher Price could somehow address this with a software update, but I may not be patient or trusting enough to wait and find out. I'm not sure any 3 year old really needs an MP3 player; however, I may seriously have to consider returning this player and getting him a cheap, basic, "grown up" player from Creative, Sandisk, etc. Even if they're not "kid tough", you can buy a couple for the price of this so-so player. Besides....what are the odds that the kid will lose it before they break it anyway?
AWSOME By A12DKB6701OYX2 on 2006-10-28
I love this toy! I bought it for both my 3 year old and 5 Year old. They LOVE it. I put all of their CD's on it and they listen in the car, at the doctors office and so on. It is really easy to use and the neck strap is a real help.
It is on my holiday gift giving list for my friends children!
A great "little kid iPod" By AGJETSRT6S4QU on 2006-11-26
My 5 year old twins wantd "iPods" for their birthday - like their big brother. We got them each these - they LOVE them and so do we. We broused through the thousands of music files on our computer - and burned their favorites to a CD - then it was very easy to get them to the fp format. They use it a lot and are thrilled with their "iPods" - my only complaint is the foam padding on the headphones falls off a lot - we finally had to superglue them on - otherwise it is awesome!
Dad's Perspective By A1TTS62COJ73FQ on 2008-01-31
Dad's Perspective:
This product has been absolutely miserable. They have made the DRM so difficult that it does not allow you to back up the songs or stories although they say they do but you can never get it restored. Since you can't do a back up, if you lose your Hard Drive the only recourse is to purchase the songs again. Fisher Price support is worthless, they could care less about their customers and their goal is to cause you to spend more money replacing the songs that you have already purchased and couldn't backup. They are so concerned about the DRM that they have caused a good product to become an absolutely miserable product to deal will. I will never again purchase this type of product from Fisher Price. While the FP store is limited on Songs and stories, it has all that one will need, and the child will be quite happy with it. The player uses AA batteries which must be replaced often and is a real pain; FP should have included rechargeable battery system. This product is quite a bit worse than IPOD in forcing the user to purchase its songs and stories and then not allowing any type of protection for the song or story in order to do a restore if necessary, so there is no investment security. If you lose it, you either buy it again or do without. I have had to re-purchase a few songs and stories because of a HD failure and FP customer support said "The only thing you can do is purchase them again" what a scam.
Child's Perspective:
This is a great product, it is quite easy for the child to use, my 5 year old loves it. I can download songs from Fisher Price quite easily. They say that you can import MP3's which you can but they make it so difficult to include any Icons' that you will eventually give up and purchase the song from FP so that you can get a nice Icon for the child. It is very rugged, my child left it outside for two days, it was snowed on and then rained on and believe it or not it still worked. When he was 4 he was able to get to the songs he wanted and to the stories quite easily. I have the speaker set for him so he would put it on speaker and he and his friends would listen to the stories. This is quite a nice product for kids if you can deal with the restrictions that FP places on it, it is quite a shame for Fisher Price to do such a thing.
Other Restrictions.
One time software, if you lose the disk the only way to get it again is to purchase it from FP, another scam. But if you already have the hardware what are you going to do? Purchase it again this is another location where FP has you by the gonads. Also, of this time the player and software does not support VISTA so I have to keep an XP box just to maintain this player. But since I purchased this product under an XP environment, if I want to upgrade at some point in the future I am sure FP will demand more money but right now I can't even upgrade (is VISTA an upgrade?)
Final Thoughts:
If you can deal with the overwhelming DRM restrictions from FP and their self-righteous attitude like they are doing the consumer a favor. Then by all means purchase this product the child will love it, after all ... it's all about the kids, and that is what Fisher Price is banking on. If I had to do it over again knowing what I know now, most likely I would purchase it again only because I can't see anything else on the market that provides this type of player (easy and well constructed) for the children. Then deal with all the FP garbage for a few years until the child is ready for something else. This is not a professional review but just a review from a Dad attempting to use a very difficult and costly product so that his 5 year old son can enjoy some stories and some music. I have had the player for two years now.
A Dad in Maryland,
- We LOVE this item - at least my 3 yr old son does
     By A7AZWDB5UG4RC on 2006-12-30
I really do love this item. The songs that came on it were terrible, but it was easy to download my own. I even downloaded some from the fisher-price site. Also very easy and not expensive. My son loves some Top 40 type songs and country music: Aint no other man, Riding Dirty, Fast Cars and Freedom. I put a different icon for each song so he can easily (visually) scan his FP3 for the song he wants. I even put the theme song for Wonder Pets and he was so excited. I have one for my 4 yr old daughter also. She likes the stories best, but again the stories that came with the FP3 were terrible. I downloaded some Dr. Suess stories and the songs for my son and she loves hers too. Terrific item and we have had no problems. Thanks FIsher Price.
- Fisher-Price FP3 - Very Lame Software
     By A1TPXVAVJKOYVO on 2007-07-05
The Fisher-Price Kid Tough FP3 Player seems like a good idea - and it has some great features. It's tough, and the headset operates at a modest level for little ears. But for the adults that have to support it, it's a nightmare!!
Fisher-Price has made it very difficult and time consuming to copy your own music to this device. They actually expect you to burn a cd with your music, and then you can copy it to the player. Now, the CD's are not that expensive, but the time required to do this , especially for a large number of tunes, is horrible.
To make matters even worse, and more frustrating, you can't even copy your own icons into the player. You can draw one, using their software - assuming that you can draw. But you can't import or copy an icon into the software for use on the player.
All in all, this player is a huge disappointment, and has thoroughly ruined Fisher-Price's reputation for fune products, as far as I'm concerned.
- Love the IPod Wannabe...
     By A3L1IYT5U773BH on 2006-12-30
My 3 year old daughter received this as a gift before a long Christmas car trip. We've been so pleased with it that I've already recommended it to everyone I know with kids her age. Overall it's a fantastic toy -- seems very durable (Still works well after several drops and tumbles)
Pros:
1. Easy to load -- no, it won't take MP3's, but it's easy to burn and then upload into the FP3 software. The software itself is small (doesn't take much room on your Cdrive) and is VERY user friendly. Other reviewers are right the songs it comes with are L-A-M-E!! but easy to replace. I have several stories on CD and loaded them in so she can listen along with her books.
2. Easy to use -- buttons are large enough for small fingers, and respond well. My little one tried using my old ipod and just couldn't make it work because her fine motor control isn't there yet -- this one is made for her.
3. Kids love it. Both my daughter and her 4 1/2 year old cousin (Who received one from Santa) LOVED walking around with their "IPods."
4. VERY durable! I had my doubts, but if this thing can survive an 18 hour car trip of nearly constant usage (rechargeable batteries ARE a good idea -- otherwise make sure you've got some AAA. It does use them up fairly quickly. I think we got about 6-8 hours of semi-continuous use per battery set), and it can survive the cousin, it can survive anything.
Cons -- only 2 that I've seen, and both of them are minor irritations, not major problems
1. Icons must be assigned song by song -- and there are only a limited number of them. For example my daughter's dinosaur CD loaded just fine, but I could only assign icons to 3 of the songs before there were no more dinosaur icons. I wish Fisher Price would find a way to assign a single icon to an entire CD -- so that, for example, all the dino songs could have a single dino icon. This would be an easy software fix.
2. It DOES freeze up on occasion -- usually when you're trying to fast forward through a series of songs. It's very easy to fix by simply taking the batteries out and reinserting.
My suggestion? Don't bother with the extra memory card. The FP3 player holds plenty of songs without it, and that will save you the problem of searching through for a single song and will eliminate the freeze up problem. Upload a small (50 - 60 songs and stories) playlist and then change it from time to time. It's very easy to swap out the songs. Great toy, though -- I highly recommend it!!
- Great First Music Player
     By A3VZ25YO61YII4 on 2006-12-12
I bought this for my 6-year-old son for Christmas. I hope he loves playing with it as much as I do. It's great! I took off all the songs that come with it, as they were a little too "childish" for him. It is really easy to use and set up. I went through all of my CD's and put his favorite songs on the player, which was also very easy. I also purchased the speakers that go with it, but I have not received those yet. I have never been disapointed with Fisher Price.
- Great item for kids!
     By A36D1TLZK75E5L on 2006-12-31
I purchased this FP3 player for my 3 year old son for Christmas, I spent a few hours loading somoe of his favorite childrens CD's onto it and he has thoroughly enjoyed it. I also purchased the docking station/speakers that go with it and have been very happy with those as well. I also purchased 3 short stores on the Fisher Price website as the preloaded music & stories provided were not the greatest. For kids who like stories and music, this is a great item.
- Only compatible with FP accessories, downloads, VERY LIMITED
     By A3BGXUP0MDYZD7 on 2007-01-01
Caution: The FP3 player is NOT compatible with anything BUT FP accessories. That means you cannot use an iDog or any other external sound devices except those made by FP (which are over priced and hard to find). Further, you cannot use music from your personal collection or CDs and you cannot use files downloaded from the Net EXCEPT those from the FP site. This is very limiting and expensive-- esp if your child likes variety. Skip the FP3 and get a Cool P3 player by Tek Nek, you won't be disappointed. We returnedout FP3 and went with the Cool P3 and have been extremely happy with it's kid-tough design, compatiblity and ease of use for both parents (set up) and kids (usage).
- Pretty good toy
     By ANRHC8XKPPO4Z on 2007-01-05
I have to disagree with the person who said that you can only play FP3 music on the player. If you read the instructions it tells you how to copy the music off of your CDs onto your computer using the included software, and then transfer them onto the player using the provided USB cord. And if your collection of CDs appropriate for kids is limited, go to your local library and if they are like mine, they have an extensive collection of music CDs plus some books on tape (well, on CD really)that you can borrow for free.
One complaint is that if you do use a memory card to expand how many songs and stories you can load, it is a pain to have to fast forward through them all. I see that you can create playlists where you can group things together but that only means you can change the playlist on occasion but only by going to the computer and deleting and then adding a new playlist. If they could change it so that you could pick a playlist directly from the FP3 player and then only have to FF through just that playlist to find a particular song it would be much easier.
My daughter has the soundtrack from The Princess and the Pauper, High School Musical, various nursery rhymes, the music from The Nutcracker ballet, and various tracks from 2 different Alvin and the Chipmunks CDs. And she wants to add more. That's a lot of stuff to FF through and it does lock up when you do that but like someone else mentioned, taking the batteries out and reinserting them does fix it. And I noticed that if you don't screw the compartment very tightly it does lock up more often.
And I also agree with whoever said that it would be nice to use the same icon for more than one song. However, I did notice that the ones that you create yourself, you can select it, then edit it (add a sun or something to the house you drew) and rename it(or just rename) and reuse it. I haven't tried renaming one of the original icons yet but I'll give it a try later now that I've thought of it.
- Good but insanely proprietary
     By AQKPQE7Y09CPV on 2007-01-22
Pros: Rugged, great battery life, headphones aren't too loud.
Cons: Crazy proprietary FP3 software, CAN'T DOWNLOAD THE PROPRIETARY SOFTWARE TO TRANSFER FILES!
It really is a decent product, but that last CON has really gotten me upset. Our son received this as a gift last year for his b-day. He likes it but was getting tired of the pre-loaded songs. So, I was going to add some more for him tonight. Of course, I can't find the CD anywhere. No biggie, right? I'll just download it. Well, you can't. At least I couldn't find it anywhere on their site this past hour. I did find reference to the fact that you have to use the serial number on the disk to install. So it sounds like I need to get a new disk. Of course, I can't find any place to order a new disk on their web site either.
Bottom line, this is a good product, but you might want to consider a 'real' MP3 player that doesn't depend on a proprietary format or proprietary software.
- AUTISM WONDER TOY
     By A1RH0I9ONIRFTY on 2007-02-03
I got this for my 6 year old son with moderate autism. what a god-send! he uses it every day, for several hours. i bought the speaker accessory so he doesn't have to use the head phones all the time. it is so easy to change the song list. he is able to use it independently, except for pushing the song vs. story button. the icons and ability to customize the icons have made it so he can quickly search for what he wants. i found the drawing screen for the icons challenging at first- but even me with my lack of artistic talent was able to accomplish the task so he knows them. i would give this my highest recommendation- very tough player- dropped who knows how many times- yet keeps going. the best thing i've purchased for him in a very long time. well worth the money.
- A Good Product but a couple of hassles
     By A2PP2KWOCXL33P on 2007-09-10
We excitedly purchased this player for our 3-year-old son last Christmas. We also purchased the speakers. He LOVES it, and it saves us from having to hear his music over and over and over. It is very durable (it has been thrown several times, including down the stairs) and is easy for a kid to operate. We also really like the built-in volume limit.
That said, there are a few things about the product that could be better. The main hassle was the fact that you have to use the special "FP3" files for loading songs and books, not regular MP3 files. So, if you already have music in MP3 format that your kid wants on the player, you can't just load it onto the player - you have to make sure it's in FP3 format. Also, although the song titles show up on the screen, there is no way to organize them into groups or albums. There is also no way to set it to just play one album or group of songs. There is a pause button, which is helpful if the kid is just going to be gone for a minute or two, but after so long, the thing shuts off by itself and doesn't remember what song you were on when you turn it back on - it automatically reverts to the first song. We didn't think it had enough memory space, as it seems to only hold about a dozen or so songs. We recommend getting an additional memory card if your child has a lot of music and you don't want to be constantly adding and removing songs. Finally, we felt the headphones could be improved on this product. They are not quite as "kid-tough" as the player, don't stay adjusted real well, and actually hardly fit our son's head. Our son is big for his age, but if the headphones didn't fit a big 3-year-old, I can't imagine that an average 6-year-old would fare much better.
Overall, the product was a hit with our son; we just wish it would have been a little more convenient for the parents.
- IF YOU RUN VISTA - BEWARE!!
     By A3OKNT8FKN7W0W on 2007-12-04
We purchased the FP3 player for our son last Christmas, and despite the fact that converting your own music to FP3 format could be tedious, we really liked it - and my son loved it. We would have given it 4 stars. The one solution to converting your own music was that there was a wide, wide variety of music and stories available from the FP3 store, which was a breeze to download to the player. The prices were definitely reasonable. HOWEVER, in the past year we upgraded to Vista, and the FP3 software is incompatible. I called customer support, and the rep was very pleasant, but simply read a "service issue" to me that stated that the FP3 is impatible with Vista. Then silence. When I questioned her further on it, she said that a software upgrade is currently being worked on, but she had no estimate of when it would be available. This seems ridiculous to me since so mamy people run Vista now, and new computers are sold with it as the default operating system. Fisher-Price had to see this coming - or they SHOULD have. It's very frustrating, and I'm tempted to toss the whole thing and just bite the bullet and buy my son a MP3 player. There are a lot more "kid appropriate" MP3 options available now than there were in the past. One bright note, users are still able to load their own music; the imcompatibility only affects the ability to use the FP3 store. I'm giving this toy 2 stars because of all the frustration with the software, and now that I can only load my own music, the fact that it is TEDIOUS to do so becomes a much bigger issue.
- Favorite Toy
     By A1LTW0ZZ72CXMH on 2007-01-11
This is my four year old son's "favorite toy". I have loaded his CDs and downloaded stories from the FP3 website. The interface for loading and downloading is parent friendly. It is also easier to use and faster than my iTunes software. There are some great stories offered in the FP3 store, including some for which we already own the books (e.g. How Do Dinosaurs Clean Their Rooms, Why Mosquitoes Buzz in People's Ear, Dr. Seuss classics, etc.). If your kid likes popular music there are several Kidz Bop collections also available. I was able to choose the few songs he likes for $0.99 instead of buying the whole CD at the store for $15.00. My son has no problems navigating the player and can easily figure out how to get from stories to songs. I would suggest parents not uplaod every song in your collection if fastfowarding and navigating is a problem. You can store the playlists on your computer and upload manageable playlists of say 10 or 15 songs. I think this is a great toy for durability, education, and fun.
- disapointed twice
     By A3H6IM4F0HR7GI on 2007-02-25
This toy is such a great idea, but the player I bought for my son's Birthday stopped working after 24 hours. I figured I just bought a lemon so I called the company and they very kindly replaced it with a new one. After 24 hours of very gentle use by my son, it is freezing up every time he tries to listen to music. The stories work (so far), but we can no longer get it to play music. I know some of these must work by all the positive reviews, but what are the odds of getting two duds in a row??
- Best Investment
     By A1AQSF3Q1YCMFX on 2007-03-08
we bought a blue one for our 2 year old and a pink one for our 4 year old for Christmas 2006 because they were always playing with there teenage sisters IPod and messing it up. They were easy to work, easy to download music and stories onto, tough, and great for car rides, and they can go anywhere. We have owned them for almost 3 months and they have been well worth the money. The only 2 things that could be changed is the speakers (like an IPod docking station) it ONLY take batteries. We wish it had an adapter that could be plugged into the wall. The other is the player itself only takes batteries instead of charging like a real MP3 player or IPod does. So stock up at Costco or Sams on Batteries you will definitely need them!!!!
- quality not good - replaced 2x without succes
     By A32LV24S9JT58A on 2007-11-28
We had 2 of these products and had the same problem with both. It would shut down and hang often enough that it was simply not useable. We thought we had gotten a defective one the first time around, so we returned it for a new one - with the same problem! The battery indicator would jump all over the place from full to empty with no rhyme or reason. When it hung, you had to get out a mini screwdriver to remove and replace the batteries (with the same ones) for it to re-start. Although the concept was good, and it was nice for my 3 year old to pick music out by the icons (since she can't read), it was not of the quality we expected. Our daughter is very gentle with her toys, so this was not an issue of her beating on the player. It was not cheap for a kid's toy, and we expected more. My husband got so frustrated with it that he just threw it in the trash and we are now on the hunt for a new MP3 player.
- FP3 player a year later
     By A35SHA8J69TOTU on 2008-01-02
I wish I had used the speakers more with my older son (now 4) when we got the player (a year ago). We were trying to get him to use it with just the headphones and for whatever reason, Fisher Price didn't think it would be a good idea to display either play or pause on the screen... so a parent can't tell if the music has started without taking the headphones away from the child, and well basically he would start crying and/or turn it off again before it started and we didn't use it much.
But, my younger son (just turned 2) discovered the speakers and the player sitting unused in the corner and has adopted it as his very own favorite thing. He has to have it everywhere, even in bed and at daycare. He can play the songs himself and navigate the menu, and since it has the speakers we can all tell if it's not playing and help him when/if he requires it (with the headphones its still another story... nobody likes the player with the headphones.)
So, for us the speakers are a must have.
But, my just turned 2 year old has no trouble navigating the menu or choosing the songs he likes. And the player has been to and from daycare (in a room full of 2 year olds) several times. The key here is not loading 30+ songs. He can easily navigate about 10 songs and 3-5 stories, but more than that and he's too confused to do it alone. So, yes, the player has the ability to take an SD card, but there is no need for one- a 2-4 doesn't need 100+ songs to navigate through (and trust me, you don't want to navigate them for him either).
As for the FP interface program, I found it fairly simple to move songs from CD directly to the player. I didn't try moving anything from mp3, as all of my son's favorite songs we also have on CD. It did take a while to figure out the software was incompatilbe with Vista, as it acts like it is working up until the moment you realize that while you can explore the player through my computer, and you can move stuff from cd into the software and choose icons, you cannot move them to the player through Vista. Fortunately we still have a non vista computer and the 4-5 songs only took minutes to load from there.
Right now we are having some issues with the connection between the player and the speakers but when I called FP they offered to send a voucher to replace the speakers. My speakers and player are more than a year old and no longer have reciepts. (note however, that we have only really used the player for the last month or so)
Would be 5 stars for how much my 2 year old son loves it and FPs willingness to replace. I dock a star for the durability of the speaker/player connection, and not being able to use it without the speakers because the parents can't tell if they are pressing play or pause when asked to turn the player on when the kid has only the headphones. I think it is fair to dock a point off the player's rating for this as we found the player unusable with the young children without the speakers. The player itself seems to be functioning fine still after 1 month or so of abuse of a 2 year old that won't even sleep without it. I would have given the speakers alone a 1 star for duribility if FP had not offered to send a replacement voucher for them.
One other thing to note is that the player takes 2 AAA batteries, and the speakers take 4 C batteries. While in the speakers the player's batteries are not used. I have used the player in the speakers with dead player batteries. When the player disconnects from the speakers it shuts off (and resets), and you must turn it on seperately to use its own batteries.
Edit: I did purchase new speakers with the voucher from FP. The new speakers did not fix the problem. I purchased a new player to test the new speakers and it works fine with both sets of speakers (Old and new), so if you are having this squeeling problem, note that it may be the player itself.
FYI-The voucher must be used in an actual store, and not in an online store, not even FP's online store will accept it... and you can not return something bought with the voucher, only exchange, it shows up as being couponed off to zero. But the voucher is good for ANY FP or Matel toy, except for a few specific named toys.
- Christmas gift for my 5 year old grandson

My grandson loves his new FP3 Player. Now he thinks he has his own IPOD, like his big brother and sister. I helped load the software to the computer and then to his FP3 player. We loaded a child's CD of music. It was very easy. With the CD of 14 songs and the pre loaded songs, the FP3 player memory is about half full. It will hold approximately one more CD, about 2 hours of music overall. This is enough for a 5 year old. The FP3 player is very durable and will hold up to a 5 year old dropping it and not treating it delicately. The speakers do not get too loud. It was a good purchase.
- This is a fabulous player!

My 3 year old son received the fp3 player for Christmas and I have not been happier with any toy. He absolutely loves it! He spends hours listening to all of his favorite songs and stories and it kept him occupied for a great portion of a 14 hour car trip. He loves that he can work it all by himself and knows which song is on because of the great icon feature. As for only being able to load fp3's from Fisher Price, that is just incorrect. We have put songs on from his favorite cd's and we download songs from itunes burn them to disc and load them easily. The icons haven't been a problem for us. Although they are limited you can also create your own icons and my son and I have a great time drawing them. We also bought the speakers and he loves those as well. He searches through his numerous songs constantly and it has never locked up. The quality of the player is great and we haven't had any problems with the foam covers on the headset, they stay on great if you don't pull them off on purpose. There isn't a better player for the toddler.

Santa got this for our 6yr old son. He wasn't ready for a real mp3 player/ipod but really bugged his sister and brother to use theirs. He loves this. It is easy to use and carry. The headset is alittle chunky, but probably just right for younger kids to handle on their own. We got an extra card and my husband helped our son pick out and download his favorite songs, so he isn't just limited to the FP songs. Great deal!

My little boy was always after my daughter's MP3 player, so we got him this one for his 3rd birthday. It took him a little while to get the hang of it, but now, he's a pro and loves to listen to his music just like a big kid. I also love that it has room for an additional memory card.
- Buy batteries in bulk

I gave this to my son for christmas and forgot batteries. I bought some panasonic alkaline at the first store I could find that was open. It burned thru all 4 after about 5 hrs of use. I hope its because panasonic batteries are junk and not the player. Other than that, my 4 yr old son loves it.
- Great for kids

The best item I ever puchased. My two year old learned how to find his favorite songs by the pictures. And was using it on his own in 5 minutes. I highly recommend to get the speakers for them also. I like the Idea that you can add a SDD card to add more songs and stories as they get older. Now my two year old leaves my daughters mp3 player alone.
- One of our best Christmas gifts!!

This Fisher Price player is so perfect for my[..]because he can manipulate it 100% by himself. He tends to go to the same stories each time. (haha) I assigned icons to the various songs so he's actually learning his alphabet as well. (Example: letter B is for Little Bunny Foo Foo.) I love it. The volume control is great, too! The only, ONLY complaint I have, since I'm used to my ipod, is that transferring files to the player is harder than it needs to be. It has to be done off a CD or downloaded, vs. what you may already have on your computer. Anyhow, not enough of a problem to give it less than 5 *s.
- Too quiet

The idea behind this toy is great & ours has lived up to its durability claim. My husband did not complain about adding songs to it, so it could not have been too bad. Batteries: this eats through them like crazy - and we used Duracell. Volume: the idea of volume control is good, but the highest volume is way too low. I can't even hear anything until I get it to the mid-setting. My 5 yr old son takes his to wrestling matches to listen while he waits his turn, but the background noise of the gym drowns out the sound in his headphones. We probably should not have bought this until next year, maybe Fisher Price will have improved it by then.
