I should've done my research... By AJ8CMT0BH8XCB on 2008-01-01
I got the Wilton set, with muffin pan, cake pan, loaf pan. The first time I used it, the smell from the oven was overwhelmingly sickening, very chemical. I thought it was because I hadn't washed it first. After washing, it was the same. As soon as it heats up in the oven, it starts to STINK. SO I did some searching on the internet - quickly found out that you really want silicone bakeware that is 100% silicone. Cheaper brands use plastic fillers which causes the odor during baking. Turns out you can tell easily by twisting a bit of the silicone - if it turns whitish, it's got plastic fillers. Pure silicone will retain it's color. The Wilton immediately turns whitish when twisted. The smell while it's hot is just nasty. I'll be returning these today - I may exchange for a higher quality and give silicone another chance. ALSO - note that silicone is NOT non-stick - it is stick resistant but the manufacturers all still recommend greasing. Wilton says it clearly on their website.
Awesome! By A1NUHG1ZX3WQXO on 2006-12-30
I got these for Christmas and after using for the first time, I think they are great! The muffins came out easily and they cleaned up easily as well. I was tired of rusty useless pans and these are fantastic!
Might Want To Consider Individual Cups By A3WKD5Q44NY4I on 2008-05-24
I have the silicone baking sheets and love them. Easy clean up. Since I make so many muffins and cupcakes, I was hoping this would be an alternative to buying paper cup inserts (I wanted to be greener). While this product works, what I hated was that it's so flexible that putting it in the oven filled with batter is difficult. It bends and I have to shove it in awkwardly. I tried putting the flex pan inside my metal pan, but it didn't fit quite right.
Now, I'm placing it on a cookie sheet. It's fixed the problem, but the product didn't work as well as I would have wanted it, too. I have now purchased the individual baking cups to put into my old muffin tins.
Better than metal By A3SKIW3YE18RBT on 2008-10-27
We have the heart-shaped pans, but I'm guessing the results can be generalized.
The "pans" seem to cook the same as regular or non-stick metal pans- food is browned all around, in and out of the cup. The cups still need to be greased or lined. When greasing the cups, the real advantage of these pans is revealed-- they are SO much easier to clean and you never have to worry about scratching a delicate non-stick surface. Also, they store well and will never rust. Those two advantages make them superior to traditional pans for me.
Minus one star only because they are not rigid and that leads to potential for spills. Hardly a fault, just a difference worth remembering. I can pick up the pan by both ends and transfer it to the oven, but a large pan would have me using a cookie sheet to support it during the transfer.
