  • Best grooming tool out there!

    By A27MRKGP05YD0S on 2006-08-16
In our 10-animal household (dogs and cats), fur is everywhere. I thought I had found the holy grail of grooming tools in the Zoom Groom (they make different models for dogs and for cats), which removes a lot of fur without giving the animal an unpleasant experience. Now I think the Zoom Groom is a great little brush, but when it comes to amount of fur removed, it's got nothin' on the Furminator. Even my long-hair cat who dislikes being groomed will let me use the Furminator on her for a good long stretch.

How does it work? Excellent question; I still can't figure it out exactly after extensive use, but I can tell you what it does NOT do. It doesn't pull or cut the hair; the comb-style "blade" does not have a sharp edge. Also, it doesn't cause discomfort for the animal; mine all seem to enjoy it very much, like it gives a pleasant scratching sensation. (I ran it along my own arm as a test, and experienced the same.)

If you go to the Furminator website and watch the grooming videos there, you will see tremendous amounts of fur being removed from dogs and cats after they have been groomed using a few different styles of grooming tools. These videos are not faked; I could not believe the piles and piles of fur I removed from my critters with the Furminator, even after using a fine-toothed flea comb on them. Their coats are so soft after I groom them, and the amount of hair shed on my furniture and floors actually seems to have decreased! Plus the critters -- especially those with heavy undercoats for winter warmth -- are way more comfy in the summer heat.

A downside -- the manufacturer does suggest you will need to buy replacement blades to maintain the performance of this tool; I am not sure how one can tell if the blade is "dull" but perhaps it will become clear after more use. All in all, however, the price is well worth the performance of this high-quality tool.

UPDATE: I wanted to add that this tool is designed to be used on clean(ish), dry, tangle-free fur. If the coat has more than a couple of burrs or tangles, use a different kind of tool (scissors or a comb) to remove these first before grooming, as the Furminator will just skim right over these areas. Also, it will not work very effectively on wet or really grubby fur; this is not the tool to reach for right after your dog's been swimming!

And I say it as an expert on just about any product that promises to reduce pet hair shedding, or make the clean up of it easier.

I have a Norwegian Elkhound, one very compact, highly intelligent, gorgeous and HAIRY dog. She has both a long coat and a very prolific downy white undercoat that seemingly sheds 24/7. It's got a cotton ball texture; tufts of it stick out, and if you pull it, you get a pouf of very soft white down that is guaranteed to stick to you and everything in its path.

My former regimen was to use a rubber curry brush for the long outer coat, and (the part I hate), an undercoat rake. No matter how much I brush her, I'm covered with hair, and there's a grocery bag FULL of hair. It's an hour to two hour task, and as much as I love my dog, a huge, hairy nuisance!

When I got the Furminator, I was impressed with the heft of it. I bought the large size with the idea that it'd be that much less effort (generally speaking, the small size is the cheapest, but it's so small, it would take forever on anything but the smallest or unhairiest dog. And the difference in price between the medium and large is, at most places, only a few bucks. If you're going to invest in the furminator, go for the size that makes the most out of every pass over the dog's coat.)

So I tried a few swoops on the dog. And yeah, it resulted in a ton of hair, but if I just run my fingers through her coat, I get pretty much the same result.

I got a grocery bag (to store the hair pulled off the comb) and set to work. On the initial combing, it took a little less than the usual hour it does. What was interesting, though, is that I used only the Furminator, not the undercoat rake and curry comb combo I usually use. In that sense, it was less time and effort.

The bag, as usual, was full. But the thing that really sold me on the Furminator is how good her coat looked. Very professional looking, like she had just gotten back from the groomer's.

Now it's a few days later, and lo and behold, one of the promises the maker of the Furminator made seems to actually be true: there is less loose hair on her. Usually I see long hairs and some of those fluffy white tufts peeking up, but that's not the case after her de-Furmination. NO loose hair, no undercoat tufts!

I can say that, based on me trying just about every comb, method, and grooming device, this is the first time my dog's been this relatively hairless since I got her.

The Furminator promises that there will be less of a hair problem with its use. All I can say is that based on one thorough use of it, that claim seems to be true. I'd recommend it (and it does have a 30 day money-back guarantee from the manufacturer.)

The only reason why I'm not five-starring this is because of the price. I still don't see why it's so expensive, and I got a good price on it w/shipping (I paid $40 and that's still too much!) I'm also worried about the cost of replacement blades for this. There's simply no reason it should cost so much!

I'd also recommend you shop around for price. I got the best deal on this (including shipping) from an ebay store (not a regular auction.) Just beware the shipping prices on places that seem to be cheap.

We were extremely disappointed in the performance of this very high priced product after looking at the demo video, photographs of pets lying on mountains of their own fur allegedly removed with a FURminator shown on the product's website and TV info-ads. We tried it exactly as instructed on all of our animals: one large medium-haired yellow lab dog, and four cats ranging from medium to long haired. The FURminator removed hardly any fur from any of them. After using the FURminator, we then brushed each of them with our old "Pet Select Soft-Touch Combo Brush" we got at WAL-MART for only $4.94. In each instance, the inexpensive WAL-MART brush removed several times more loose fur from each animal than the FURminator did. We packed up our over-hyped, over-priced FURminator and sent it back for a refund.

  • Great tool for dogs with lots of undercoat

    By A102HQ38U10PPZ on 2006-08-06
I feel compelled to balance the...interesting...comment below. This tool is not meant for humans; likewise, it (as with any other intensive grooming tool) should not be used repeatedly over one area. Because it pulls coat, it can irritate the skin with overuse. *It does not conntain any blades.* However, cats can be very skin sensitive (I haven't tried it on my cat, she doesn't like much handling).

Having used it now on four dogs, I can say that dogs *love* the Furminator. Even my former-stray, who is hestitant about grooming because she had skin problems when I adopted her, will follow me around wanting to be groomed when I pick up the Furminator and stay calm and relaxed while I use it. It also pulls more undercoat than any tool I've ever tried, so I happen to love it too! However, despite what it says above, it does not appear to accomplish much with short-haired dogs (which makes sense, given their lack of undercoat).

at last -- a solution for pet hair that works! i have two domestic short hair tabbies who produce copious amounts of hair. they suffer from hairballs and are constantly throwing them up. i saw this tool on home shopping tv and instantly bought it. it is fantastic and gets both the top hair and the undergrowth off. my catties love it! they love to be groomed now as it does not hurt them the way other brushes do. i was amazed at how much hair came off them. plus it is very gratifying to do this for your pet. their coats come out beautiful and soft. you can really see the difference on them. well built and durable. WORTH EVERY PENNY. i saw it on hsn tv and bought it from hsn for about $30 which included shipping. got here very fast. works on dogs too.

  • WELL worth the cost!

I live in Minnesota and have a twelve-year old German Shepherd who lives indoors year-round. Her undercoat EXPLODES in the spring and fall when the weather changes so drastically, and there is simply no way to keep up with all of the brushing and vacuuming that is needed during the shedding seasons. Until... along came the FURminator!

Believe me that I had tried everything on this dog for eleven years - shedding blades, slicker brushes, rubber brushes, metal combs, pin brushes, bristle brushes, the rubber Zoom Groom, rubber curry combs, shed-reducing diet-supplements, shampoos, conditioners and sprays... every product on the store shelves, and every new product that came out on the market I thought could help with the endless shedding. But alas, every brush and comb and glob of goop was as worthless as the last in the fight against the fur.

So when FURminator came out, I thought, why the heck is this brush so expensive? Could it really be worth the money? I saw that advertising image they use of the dog sitting with his fur in a giant half-circle on the floor all around him, and his coat looking flat and smooth. I wanted my dog to look like that! I imagined all of those piles of fur being slowly embedded in the carpet throughout the house over the course of the shedding seasons, and the constant battle to vacuum it all up. I was tired of that, so I thought I'd give it a try.

I've had the FURminator for about a year now, as I wanted to really test it out and make sure it continued to be as impressive as when I first got it, and it has. Every time I take it from its peg on the wall, my dog knows that it's time to get all that itchy, yucky, uncomfortable fur out of her coat for good, so she stands as quiet as a princess as I pull out heaps of hair (outdoors, of course.) The tufts of hair are so light and fluffy, that I also get the added joy of watching birds come pick up the puffs to build their nests in the spring. It has cut grooming down to about a quarter of the time I used to spend, with better results than I ever got before, when I armed myself with my box of brushes and sprays. This is the only brush I will ever use on any undercoated dog.

The FURminator is more than a brush - it is truly a grooming tool. You will not be disappointed.

  • There's a sucker born every minute

I actually make a living writing reviews. Not of pet products, but audio-recording equipment. I saw the Furminator ads on TV, and then started researching on the net, where I wound up here at Amazon.

I have a Border Collie who sheds like BC's like to shed. We'd moved away from our usual groomer, and I wanted a solution to cut down on the shedding. I bought the whole thing; hook, line, and sinker from PetSmart. Got the large Furminator Tool, Furminator Shampoo, and Furminator Conditioner.

$100 I plunked down - 'cause we love our dog, and nothing is too good for her. : )

It was the biggest waste of $100 I've ever spent.

I used everything according to the instructions. I even spoke with someone at PetSmart about it. It took some hair off my dog - but I could have done that with my hand.

We just moved back to our old area, and our dog is now back at her regular groomer - and looking more beautiful than ever. I even asked the groomer about the Furminator - thinking I would offer her mine to try out. She opened a draw and pulled one out that she'd gotten at a trade show. She said - point blank - that the Furminator was no good. She'd used it a couple of times, and it had been sitting in her drawer ever since.

Unfortunately, my wife threw out the bag with the receipt, so there's no possibility for sending all this junk back to Furminator for a refund.

I don't know who the people here are who are writing these glowing reviews. I recommend products all the time. But I would not recommend the Furminator or the shampoo or conditioner at all.

I have a Welsh Corgi, otherwise known as a shedding machine. Another Corgi owner told me how well the Furminator worked on his dog, so I bought one. The Furminator removes undercoat VERY slowly, as in hardly at all. My curry comb was one-third the price and takes out undercoat about five times faster. My advice is to save a lot of money and time with a curry comb and slicker brush.

  • WATCH OUT - THIS TOOL IS A TRICK
    By A1JD2GXVKK2VCW on 2007-12-24
Man, when i first got this thing I was blown away.. I mean, look at the piles of hair I got off my four cats and my dog. Amazing, right? NO. My cat's coats look different, kind of like a man who's hair is thinning. Not only do their coats look less healthy, but not one of my 5 animals enjoyed it at all. They actually hated it and run away when they see it.

As if that wasn't bad enough, all the animals still shed! I find random poofs of hair blowing across my floor like tumbleweed, and every time i pet the cats I get tons of loose hairs flying in my face... it is just as bad as before.

People see this thing work and think it's the best. They see all the hair that was removed and get excited and buy it, just like I did. Don't pay attention to the big pile of hair that you removed, pay attention to life afterwards. PLEASE take my advise and stay away... this isn't just one review for one animal, this is a review for five different animals.

    STAY AWAY!

  • Caveat Emptor...and keep that vacuum handy!
    By A1ECIU7WJDL32C on 2007-04-08
Heaven forbid--somebody's giving this fabulous item one star! Forgive my rebellion, but I was truly disappointed with the Furminator and can not agree with everybody's raves about it. I do agree with this product's claim that it removes a lot of hair--but perhaps too much if you like your animal to have a nice thick coat or a beautiful, fluffy tail. And it's SO messy to use, which you don't find out until you actually get it home and use it--I was surrounded by floating patches of fur that stuck to everything BUT the comb. The fur goes directly from your cat...to YOU. If you're allergic, use a mask! I tried to keep the fur confined, but static electricity caused most of it to float away or stick to me as the fur doesn't come off in bunches but sits on the top layer of fur after each stroke. You can gather it up after each stroke, but static electricity will be your enemy when you try to put the fur in the trash. My long-haired Burmese did NOT like it; it removed about half the fluff from his magnificent tail and pulled on or got tangled in his fur no matter now gently and evenly I combed. My short-haired cats didn't mind it so much; but again, the loose hairs flew away no matter how closely I read the directions and used long, steady strokes; their tails are now half the thickness and look like fuzzy rat tails. Be very careful around the tail area and keep the strokes even--or just avoid the tail completely! I had to vacuum extensively afterward; fur flying EVERYWERE--not as easy to use as you'd think. I prefer and recommend the standard metal-bristle brushes; they remove a lot of fur--without pulling or cutting--which stays on the brush in a clean bunch for easy cleaning. And they don't turn your cats into rats. WHY IS THIS PRODUCT SO EXPENSIVE???

  • Best shedding comb out there
    By A11IY8FZ37FIFI on 2006-08-25
The furminator removes far more hair than any other brush, comb, or rake that I have tried. I used it for 4 days straight, 20 minute sessions, on my golden retriever, and she would just stand there very calmly as I brushed her. I also inspected her skin afterwards for irritation or reddening, but didn't see any problems. The amount of fur removed is amazing! and her coat looked much more smooth and flat. It doesn't eliminate shedding but it definitely cuts down on it. I know friends who use it on their cats, and if your cat enjoys being brushed, then this is a good tool for them too.

  • Two cats, two different experiences
    By A2D9BUWLZDTFYL on 2006-09-26
We have two cats in the house, a white, fine-haired siamese and a calico. The first time I used the furminator on the calico, there was so much hair in the pile that I was worried for her :) In fact she loves this bruch, and we've noticed a sincere decrease in the amount of hair around the house.

The siamese cat however didn't show nearly the same results. I think maybe the hair is too fine to be cut by the blades. It's a real shame, because he sheds like it's an olympic sport.

I still rate this brush a 4. Both cats love it. The amount of hair in the house has decreased far past what we were experiencing whith any other brush (we've tried many... did i mention how much the white cat sheds?)

  • FURminator owns every brush I've had
    By A3I3CQ0Y9472FA on 2006-11-17
Don't believe the naysayers -- take it from me, an owner of three cats in a small house.

I've used all kinds of brushes, combs, and rakes to get rid of all that fur. I even tried those sticky grooming gloves to no avail. Nothing worked to my satisfaction until I got this FURminator tool.

You would not believe the amount of fur I pulled off my three cats. The only other time I got so much fur out of the house was when Stanley Steemer came to steam-clean the carpet and raked it. No kidding.

This tool was worth the money I paid for it. Period. I will buy this product again and again to comb all that nasty fur from my fur babies.

  • Worth the Money

Not only do I love my Furminator, my Malamute likes it too. She has the itchies from allergies and loves to be brushed with the Furminator. It gets out tons of hair that you would never be able to remove with a regular brush or comb. I took it to the dog park and let some people try it out on their dogs, they all wound up buying one. Yes the price does seem a bit high but it is a very sturdy brush that will last a lifetime.

  • The furminator
    By A3T15OX8M2P93O on 2006-09-14
I've been using the "furminator" for at least a year now. I have 2 shelties and they shed really bad! I have tried almost every other brush out there, and the "furminator" wins hands down. When I'm done grooming, I have enough hair there for 2 more dogs!!! The best part about it is that the dogs love getting brushed now. I also have a long haired cat that never let me brush her before, she now even lets me brush her tummy. All 3 do not run away when the "furminator" comes out. It's the best grooming tool out there without a doubt!

  • Very good, but time consuming
    By A2IMLOJ2Z2QEU2 on 2006-09-11
I purchased this brush instead of the "Seen on TV" brand that's currently going around because I needed a larger surface area for my Alaskan Malamute. This brush works great getting out the undercoat, however it is very time consuming and takes multiple passes of the brush in order to remove the undercoat completely. It also has a habbit of cutting the topcoat hairs unless you apply constant pressure. I use this brush as the final part of a three-part brushing which includes a normal wire brush, a rake brush and finally the FURminator. So far, the rake still does the best job of getting rid of the most amount of undercoat fur.

  • Furminator
    By AKZ1MWO1SRQ19 on 2005-09-09
Our older cat was throwing up everyday. The vet said there was nothing wrong with her. We tried furball food and that helped a little but she kept throwing up and losing weight at a dangerous rate. We got the furminator about 4 weeks ago and she has not thrown up since and she is putting on weight.
I think the furminator saved her life!

  • It does work...but is not a cure-all...
    By A2JYU1RG8XCX0O on 2006-03-14
I bought this off ebay for about $22 plus shipping, cheaper than any other place I looked at the time (though now I see Amazon.com has it on sale for $23.50). It does work. Depending on the type of coat you are using it on. First of all, the furminator was designed to remove undercoat. If your dog/cat doesn't have an undercoat (the soft, downy coat that lies underneath the top coat and floats off everywhere when your dog shakes) then the furminator will do nothing. It removes undercoat without disturbing the top coat. And boy did it not disturb the top coat. After furminating my short-medium fur length medium-small sized dog for a few times and noticing increasing amounts of shedding, I realized that it was from her undisturbed top coat, which I normally get out with a rubber curry brush (the Zoom Groom, which by the way, works great for the top coat or on a single-coated dog). Alas, the furminator would not be a "kill 2 birds with one stone" brush. It did, however, do a good job of taking out the undercoat without irritating my dog (and usually she gets impatient once she feels her skin has been rubbed raw from brushing with a wire-bristle slicker brush). In my dog's case (maybe not true for every dog), all the undercoat was caught up in the comb so every now I then I would have to remove the neat little clump of fur stuck within the tines and place it aside until I had 20 or so neat little clumps of fur by the time I was done. I like the small size of this furminator (my dog weighs 40 pounds) because it allows me to get around the curves and crevices better. The downside is that it takes longer to furminate (more brush strokes). Also, furminating regularly did not seem to stop the shedding even though it removes so much undercoat. Indoor dogs seem to have no reason to shed seasonally. The coat will shed, year-round, no matter what. The furminator does, however, seem to help my dog be more comfortable by removing all that extra fur and taking away some of the shedding-related itchiness. My recommendation for a thorough grooming is: 1) rubber curry brush first to remove loose top coat, 2) furminate!, and then 3) wire-bristle slicker brush to remove any loose hairs deposited over the dog from steps 1 and 2. Do this 2-3 times a week and shedding in the house will be controllable. I'd buy the Dyson vacuum too....if I won the lottery.

  • Amazzzing results!!!! Better than described

I bought the furminator on ebay for about 30.00, and thought it was pretty high. But I also "bought" the promise it works wonder. My cats hair isnt long nor short, but THICK, SO...paying 30 beat having hair in my food , my sofa and clothes, so I paid it, happily. the first couple tries I wasnt very satisifed because it was doing minimal on my cat ...until. I started to apply my pressure and boy.. was the hair coming offf..the tool is very comfortable to use and vvery verstaile esp. if you buy the small you can get between the legs and under arms, usually hard with the larger combs. Anyway, it was worth the 30.00 and honestly i would have expected to PAY MORE if i'd known how well it had worked. AMAZZZING

  • The best thing that every happened to pet owners!!!
    By A3EEH8DRKC2HGH on 2006-11-11
My sister and I purchased the furminator because we have two dogs and two cats! We didn't really think that any type of "brush" was worth the price of the furminator, but we were desperately searching for an answer to our shedding issues. All I have to say is that after trying the furminator I will gladly be an official spokesperson! I have begun singing its praises to anyone who will listen! So far, those who I have recommended it to have been extremely surprised and happy at the results. The pictures of the animals laying in piles of fur are very true! Just by brushing our dogs and cats about once every two weeks the amount they shed was probably cut by 75 percent! If you are looking for something to help with your pet's shedding buy the furminator. Everything they promise is true and you will definitely be happy with it. I haven't tried anything else that compares. Happy brushing!!

  • Didn't work for me!
    By A23U1921716HSY on 2007-01-28
I used this tool on my pug and it didn't work any better than a standard $5 shedding blade. Perhaps it will work better on long haired pets, but unfortunately for me, it was a waste of money.

  • Awesome! Works just like in the infomercial!

This is by far the best deshedding tool I have used so far on my 3 year old black lab. It really pulls out the loose undercoat and dead hair that would normally just stick around ad nauseum.

My dog doesn't mind this brush at all, in fact he seems to like the stroking. I do make sure he's occupied with a rawhide since I spend 20-30 minutes working the coat.

I'm not sure how well this would work on a longer haired dog like the goldens, but for the labs and the like, it's outstanding. You will be astonished at how much hair you're able to comb out of your pup.

Check out my picture at the top of the page by the "customer images" to see firsthand!

I love it, love it, love it!

  • Our golden retrievers love it!
    By ADHREXX2T4MSJ on 2006-10-26
With two big golden retrievers, the two most important things to have are a good vaccuum and a good shedding comb. There was some dinky plastic thing advertised on TV that we thought might do the job, but then we read the reviews here on Amazon and saw that everyone was disappointed with it. On the other hand, the Furminator got five stars from everyone, so we bought it.

The old adage "you get what you pay for" applies here. This bad boy is RUGGED. It's a family heirloom, because it sure isn't going to degrade in my lifetime, even if I lived 150 years. The grip is solid and comfortable, and easy on your hands. The actual comb is perfection in its design. It comes with a plastic protector for the tines, which you'll find very handy. If you look closely at the picture, you can see that the handle is bolted onto the head with two big, solid screws. This thing is built like a tank, and it works marvelously for removing that fine "inner" fur (what we call "doggy down").

Just buy it, for the sake of owning something of genuine quality that will last through many generations of dogs. (People, too!)

  • RIPS the dog's hair out
    By AJ95Q0ZFDLS6R on 2007-12-11
At first, I thought this was the greatest thing ever. I was getting GOBS and GOBS of hair from my Golden Retriever pup.
Then, we visited my puppy's breeder. She asked me what I was using to brush my pup - I proudly told her "The Furminator!" She then told me that her coat was all ripped and her hairs broken up. I was mortified! (and also somewhere wondering why her coat was not as soft as I thought it should be!)

This *brush* was actually ripping and destroying my puppy's coat! I immediatley stopped using it on my pup - and realized that getting every hair out is not as important aas getting the LOOSE hairs out. Back to the slicker brush.

  • Furminator the best!!!
    By A3R79FJD9QKO6G on 2005-08-28
I manage a boarding kennel where we offer the Furminator as a de-shedding service. The tool works great! The first time you use it on a cat or dog it will take a long time to get all of the undercoat out. Then when you use it every 4 to 6 weeks as the instructions suggest it will take a lot less time and keep your dog or cat in beautiful coat condition. I have used numerous combs and brushes to remove undercoats, including curry combs, undercoat rakes, dematters etc. but none of them get all the undercoat out like the Furminator.

  • Excellent dog brush!
    By A3IUPU4RL4XR3W on 2005-09-04
I bought the Furminator after a new groomer used it on my lab mix. It was just like the picture where there was a whole new dog made just of hair after she was brushed after her bath. I ran the brush down my arm to make sure it was not sharp like so many other pet brushes and it is very blunt on the end. Both of my dogs don't particularily like to be brushed. I have tried the rake for my chow mix and traditional brushes for my lab mix but I think they both scratch their skin as they don't like it so I use brushes with rounded tips. But even so they don't like it. After getting my furminator, in their first session, they were pushing each other out of the way to get brushed and doing some interesting stretchy like movements as if they were getting a great massage. Not as much came out since they had not just had a bath (which may be why some folks had variable performance) but it still did much better than my other brushes. Their reaction alone has sold me, even if it had not done a great job getting the fur. I should mention that my Chow mix is cut down to about 1.5-2 inches of fur so I have not tried it on him when he has a full coat.

  • Great For Shorter Hair
    By A1WEUFP4ASLP4P on 2005-11-29
After seeing an advertisement, I decided this was worth looking into since nothing else had really made a dent in our dogs shedding. (My husband wasn't really happy with the price tag, and I knew I'd never hear the end of it if it didn't live up to what I'd told him I'd seen.) It arrived while I was at work and he tried it first, you couldn't find a happier customer. It works great on our dog (short haired mutt), one session keeps the shedding at an absolute minimum for several weeks, but on our longer haired cat it isn't as effective as a slicker brush (which in turn is useless on shorter hair). Hope that info helps others who are interested!
