  • Used to be reliable

    By A3F3Y5HU3R8X5X on 2007-12-29
Verbatim DL used to be by far the best DL media available. Reliable, stable in storage, and consistent high quality made by Mitsubishi in their Singapore plant, one of the highest quality DVD production plants in the world.

Not any more. Verbatim has outsourced a large part of their DL production to a plant in India, and now when you buy this media you have a high chance of getting made in India - this product is poor, often with obvious physical defects in the media like bubbles, holes and foil delaminates.

It is possible to still find made in Singapore cakeboxes on store shelves, but if you can't actually read the disk label before buying you are rolling the dice when you buy.

It is a real shame Verbatim does not offer the Singapore product as a diferent grade. It would be worth a few extra bucks to get a cakebox that had a 95% success rate vs. the 50% rate the made in India product gives.

Verbatim has really gotten a black eye in my book with this stunt.

  • High Quality Media

    By A7KTZQ3WSH73F on 2007-03-23
20 discs and not a single coaster. I'm not sure what better a review I can give to blank optical media than that.

For reference, my discs were burned using Toast 8 Titanium on a Intel Core Duo iMac Superdrive.

  • Best DVD DL media there is

    By A2OXOOM25U4PVI on 2006-09-09
Verbatim DVD+R DL has worked for me every single burn. 40 burns no coasters. Highly recommended.

  • Still the best DL- DVD

    By AF2SVA4N3HYXK on 2007-03-29
Verbatim DL+R is by far the best double layer in the marketplace so far. I used so many of them and never had a problem with any disc.

  • No problems yet

    By A27Z3VV6VA8WU8 on 2006-09-01
Working on my second 20pk and haven't had a bad burn yet.
    Picture quality is good.
They burn at 4X on my computer.

  • A Few Coasters
    By A1HOV5ICDDKI03 on 2008-01-18
I used the Memorex DVD+R DL DVDs before buying the Verbatim ones. Out of a Memorex 20-pack I didn't burn a single coaster using Nero. Out of the first 10 Verbatim discs, however, I've burned 3 coasters. One of the coasters was obvious, as you could see many imperfections in the disc right after I removed it from the cake box. The edges of all of the discs look ragged and cheap. I would not recommend this brand of dual layer DVDs and I won't buy them again.

  • VERBATM DVD+R DL 8.5GB 2.4X 20 pk Spindle
    By A2XNCXY2EEKBC6 on 2006-11-26
Best quality dual layers on the market tried several brands such as HP and Memorex and they don't compare to quality. Out of the full 20 pack spindle, no coasters with exception to one; but that was a program error not the disc. Wasted a lot of money buying the other brands and ended up with numerous coasters. I tested out this 20 pack and it is great! I highly recommend eventhough it costs a little more than the other Dual Layers on amazon it is definitely worth it, considering your saving so much purchasing them online than off;its about 2 dollars a disc online. Offline you can pay about 5-7 dollars a disc at general retailers for brands like HP and Memorex....Verbatim is even more than that per a disc. Great trusted brand for all my DVD's that require a dual layer. Enjoyed using this product for the simple fact of no coasters, will be ordering more soon, probably a higher quantity due to the price being low here online. It works at 6X on my computer; this varies depending on the model of your computer/dvd burner. Overall excellent quality highly recommend!

  • 100% perfect burns & durable
    By A21K75XWR1Z8RD on 2007-03-07
I got 20 of 20 perfect burns using these disks and Toast 7 on a G4 Powerbook with a SuperDrive. I was cautious and only burned at 2X. I'm using them to back up the original children's movies we have, since they take a beating. I've had them a month now, with a three year old handling them, and despite scratches, they are holding up well. If they remain readable for more than a year, they will be the best disks I've ever bought.

  • No coasters!
    By A3SYHHYICX2PV on 2007-01-04
These double layer +R DVD's have recorded flawlessly. I use Verbatim single layer disks as well, and have about a 1% failure rate. I stick with products that work, and this is one of them!

  • Used to be the Best - What Happened to Quality?
    By A288AE5OVLZKTK on 2007-01-22
I have recently purchased several 10- and 20-pack spindles of this product. I have also have two new dvd burners - A Plextor PX-760 and a BenQ DW1655 - and and ALL burns have been coasters. I have also tried some test burns on a BenQ DW1620 Pro. Each of these burners have put on a different computers, the second being set up only for dedicated burning (i.e. no connectivity to network, no anti-virus or spyware, etc. On a freshly installed XP SP2, with nothing other than dvd burning software). All the burns had PIO failures to the point of making the disks unusable. Quality rating of burns 0, sone 45 (out of 100). Needless to say, I am not going to buy any more of these disks for a while...I have had absolutely flawless results in the past.

  • Verbatims spotty quality now---
    By A22BJ7MKDPNKUF on 2007-11-02
The problem with verbatims now is that some are being outsourced to india...which is bad, they do not use the same manufacturing process and quality control program as the verbatims made in SINGAPORE! So if you want the good ol trusty verbatims we love so much make sure its manufactured in Singapore, also the media from Japan isnt bad. The verbatim printable DVD+R DL media (95123) is made exclusivly in singapore.

  • Not working with a Sony drive
    By A121ZAG094UTPI on 2007-12-06
The first five of five disks failed with a Sony DRU-810A drive. They may be fine disks, but they don't work with my equipment. Switching back to Memorex disks solved the problem.

  • Simply junk! Expensive junk!
    By ACJKE4P1P6M7G on 2008-01-09
I didn't buy 20-pack, but a small 10-pack. So far, all coasters. I tried 2 different softwares in two different ways: VIDEO_TS & AUDIO_TS with UltraIso, and (converted) ISO with DVDDecrypter. All bad burn, my versatile Philips DVD player (supposed to play it all!) can not read any. I'll stick with Memorex, cheaper, haven't failed me once yet (burned on 3 different PCs, with 3 different DVD-ROM brands!). I'll never buy anything by the brand Verbatim EVER again!

  • Verbatim DL suddenly changed their disks
    By A1EI4H4ENVELRK on 2008-01-31
I completely agree with E.Larson. The recent change made to these disks by Verbatim seriously degraded the quality of these disks and damaged their place in the DL market. Past buyers of Verbatim DL disks should watch out when buying them online or else they'll wind up with the inferior disks. Myself, I'm only buying them at brick-and-mortar stores until Verbatim wises up.

  • I'll never use this!
    By A2TQZJWCUK7OMR on 2007-12-25
Almost half of the total package was failed to burn on my Pioneer dvd+R writer.
I didn't have any problem with Sony medias before.
    Don't even try this junk.

  • No luck in a LiteOn
    By AMP9GOQWJAGIZ on 2007-12-27
Out of 20 disks, had 8 coasters. This at 2.4x using a LiteOn SATA drive. Switched to Memorex 8x, still burning at 2.4x, no problems so far.

I don't recommend these disks. They are more expensive than the Memorex and don't work as well.

  • 2 out of 3 Coasters so far. I am not impressed.
    By A36NH9CX0LKLOF on 2008-01-22
I bought these discs after hearing about how great Verbatim discs were compared with other manufacturers. I had been using Memorex (and will be again) and had experienced 3 coasters out of 60 burns. Not bad at all. Anyhow, I saw the Verbatims on sale and picked up a 20 spindle. As the title of this review states, 2 of the 3 burns thus far have resulted in coasters. I am waiting on the 4th, but am not hopeful. I am going back to Memorex. I should have bought them as usual, but was lured by the sale on Verbatim($3 less, usually $5 more than the Memorex). There really is no excuse for this abhorrent level of quality control. Ummm...make that 3 out of 4. Utter crap even at 2x burn speed. Oh yeah, the one that did burn looks really nice. Then again, so do the Memorex. Buyer beware...

  • top quality
    By A13EQE9EY2ET93 on 2006-12-24
Expensive but worth the price since disc are best quality money can buy and if you get a coaster it's either your fault or your software.
Out of 20 disk you should get 20 successful burns unlike other brands that will give you 15 good disk out of 20 if you are lucky.
Have to knock off 1 star for price since it has stayed the same for over a year. You'd think they'd get cheaper to make by now?

  • Wonderful Product
    By A3NUA4X3DPAPNM on 2007-01-05
These are by far the best disks for burning DVD's that I've been able to find. With normal disks you tend to get burn errors quite frequently, resulting in you losing time and your money. These things are near perfect in their performance.

  • no coasters so far
    By A3JH7KN50NCN5I on 2007-11-28
I've used a number of brands of blank media, and I've definitely had more problems with other brands than i have had with verbatim. I never seem to get coasters from these discs, compared to having had at least 1/5 of my discs from other brands turn out to be useless. One thing though: I burn at pretty low speeds (like x2 or x4) just to be careful, so I can't really say how they work at v. high speed burning, but they've been great for me.

  • excellent
    By A1MT6JQ3OUJUU9 on 2008-02-13
I'm using a Sony DRU-820A burner. In the past I've always used Memorex dual layers without a problem. Memorex 8.5Gb/ 2.4x DVD+R Dual Layer (25-Pack Spindle) Then I tried their newer dl's Memorex 32025732 DVD+R 8x Double Layer 50 Pack Spindle and had nothing but problems. So it was time for a new brand. I've heard nothing but good things about verbatim, and these disks don't disappoint. They do not seem cheap or flimsy like the memorex ones. They burn at 6x with my drive, and that is excellent for a double layer disk. I'm burning my 5th disk from the spindle now, and so far no coasters, no layer break issues or any other kind of problem. These are great disks and I will always use them from now on.

  • It's an Crap Shoot
    By A33UKL10WR3NWT on 2008-06-27
In the past year, I've burned dozens of cakeboxes of Verbatim DLs sold in purple shrink wrap. In my experience, it doesn't matter where the discs are made - India, Singapore or Timbuktu: some of the cakeboxes give me good burns and some of them don't, and there's no way I can predict the outcome of the burns by looking at the package. That's why I think it's a crap shoot.

I've had cakeboxes of discs made in India that rendered excellent C1 and C2 scores and provided superb video reproduction. I've had cakeboxes made in Singapore that rendered terrible C1 and C2 scores and provided grainy, blotchy video reproduction. And vice versa.

I get fewer coasters from a cakebox of Verbatim DLs in the purple shrink wrap than I get from competing brands.

Given the erratic quality control of these Verbatim DLs, I think they're overpriced.

  • Coasters
    By ARXTKNCL1YTXS on 2008-08-01
Worthless. I'm using a brand new MacBook Pro with more than enough hardware specs and am using Toast Titanium 9. I haven't managed to get one of these to burn successfully yet. From reading other reviews, it doesnt seem like there is much out there for reliable DVDR DL media. Seems like luck of the draw. Very disappointed with this after having so much previous success with previous generations of verbatim cds and dvds.

  • Disappointing results - 33% coasters
    By A3ASGCK8CVQBWS on 2008-08-12
I have not had great success using these. I am currently using a MacBook Pro, purchased new in March of 2008, with the SuperDrive and using Roxio Toast for DVD burning software.

I have had complete success with a couple of other brands of 4.7 GB DVD media with no coasters. These Verbatim DL discs have been very unreliable and have failed about a third of the time. At $3.00 a disc, that gets too expensive.

Like I said, I'm very disappointed in these results.

  • These truely are the best!
    By AGYW580EFV1QF on 2007-08-24
Even though it's labeled 2.4x, my 16x burner burns these at 8x which is much better than the 50 min burn process on the 2.4x ones. I bought the memorex brand after buying the Verbatim's because the memorex offered 5 extra discs at $7 less. That was a big mistake since more than half the memorex 2.4x ones were all not burning correctly. I think 2.4x is just too slow for such a large disc and it's a miracle if you can get just one to work right without stressing out your dvd player lazer. These Verbatims not only burn at 8x, but they read so nicely in my dvd player. I cannot even hear the lazer and doesn't sound like major wear and tear when trying to read Verbatims, the way the memorex's do. Stay away! from Memorex 2.4x 8.5GB discs or any brand of 8.5GB discs that only lets you burn at 2.4x. That speed is just so ridiculous. I didn't buy a 16X burner to burn at 2.4x and it seems 2.4x's are the only ones available, except for these secret 8x Verbatims.

  • 100% Perfect Burns at 6X
    By A3CPC3DQV4NC2V on 2007-08-24
I hear all the gripes out there about burning problems with DL discs, the truth is these problems are almost always your burner & NOT the discs. Especially Verbatim. More expensive, but well worth it. Their discs are guaranteed! as far as DL discs go, there are none better out there...

  • Just plain work
    By A2SMSSAF8ZH5SU on 2007-11-06
Not much to say other than I pop them in my DVD burner, burn something, pop it in my DVD player and they work - everytime.

  • Made in INDIA or SINGAPORE?
    By A3VSNWE5LOAXEP on 2007-12-09
It seems that Verbatim NOW is manufacturing 2.4x DLs in INDIA, which results in POOR QUALITY DISCS. Made in Singapore discs are the best. Does anybody know where is this batch from Amazon made?

  • 7.96GB, not 8.5GB
    By ACOV36R272G8F on 2007-12-15
Tried a few so far (with Nero) and it worked fine. The only negative thing noticed is that the size of the disk reported by both the operating system and the DVD recorder is 7.96G, not 8.5G as advertized.

  • They work great for me.
    By A2L5FSC0LC809R on 2008-01-21
With dvd media the name of the game is compatibility. Many mistakenly blame media for finicky hardware(and sometimes software). Find a brand that your DVD burner likes and stick with it. I've burned 50 or 60 using this media and I've made a few coasters but never because of the discs themselves. The price as of today is reasonable, neither best nor worst.
