  • Best Single Cup Brewer On The Market

    By A2HYLKEGBV6XEU on 2006-10-09
I recently purchased the new Keurig B-70 Gourmet Single Cup Home Brewing System that was released on October 1st, 2006 and have been very happy with it. The machine is extremely well designed, simple to operate, aesthetically pleasing, and most importantly, brews an excellent cup of coffee. I am very impressed with how quickly it is able to brew a cup of coffee, the selection of brew sizes, and how simple clean up is.

There are a variety of single cup brewers on the market now, many utilizing pre-packaged coffee "pods" for brewing. Personally I was not comfortable purchasing a product where I would be locked into the selection and pricing of a specific manufacturer, or one that would only brew coffee and not tea and cocoa. This is just one area where Keurig really shines above their competition.

Keurig has gathered support of a variety of gourmet coffee, tea, and cocoa manufacturers and there currently there are over 140 different types sold pre-packaged in K-Cups including Green Mountain, Diedrich, Gloria Jean's, Timothy's, Van Houtte, Tully's, Coffee People, Newman's Own, Celestial Seasonings, Bigelow, Twinings, and Ghirardelli. Not only is there a large selection to choose from, there are a variety of resellers online offering K-Cups, and pricing is extremely competitive.

In addition to the pre-packaged offerings, Keurig offers the My K-Cup Reusable Coffee Filter allows you to use your own gourmet ground coffee in your Keurig home brewer. This option provided the extra level of comfort I personally needed to make the jump into a single cup brewer. Frankly I don't find myself using it very often as I had originally thought, as there are so many options available in pre-packaged K-cups.

The pricing of the Keurig brewers are extremely reasonable, and brews gourmet coffee in just a fraction of the cost of purchasing it from a Starbucks, Coffee People, or similar. I expect that my machine will pay for itself in savings in just a couple months of use.

The only suggestion I have for Keurig is that the My K-Cup Reusable Coffee Filter be included with the sale of the brewer, and not an optional accessory. It is such an inexpensive accessory that I am surprised it was not included. Overall the Keurig brewers are excellent value and quality and would recommend them to anyone interested in a single cup brewer.

  • Variety rules the day at Keurig

    By A2ON83BMH5LUAL on 2006-10-05
Being one who loves convenient, but great tasting coffee, I've bought several single-serve coffee machines. The Home Cafe, My Bunn Cafe, and the most recent, Tassimo.

They all worked quite well, considering how "new" they were to the field, and how fresh the field really was at the time, for consumers. I was happy with each purchase(save the Home Cafe, which had a serious mechanical flaw).

I'm not going to spend all my time just comparing the Keurig machine; I'm simply going to say "I wish I'd bought one of these[any Keurig machine] earlier". It meets almost all the desires I had in a single-serve coffee machine.

    - Tons of variety in K-cups (which actually can be difficult, I didn't know where to start or what to try!)
    - Simple to use
    - Beautiful, functional design
    - 4 brew size choices
    - Keeps water hot for the next cup instead of waiting until you fiddle with the machine
    - Can be used with a custom filter K-Cup so you can brew any coffee you like (I'm looking forward to using this with tea too!)
    - Much quieter than some machines I've used (the Tassimo is freakishly loud in my opinion)

Those are just some reasons I love this machine. The fact that it makes very good coffee is a big plus too, right? It seems as if the coffee from the Keurig machine tastes less "burnt" than most single serve coffee I've had in the past.

My biggest complaint is the cost. Whether it's worth $200 to you or not, is entirely up to YOU. If you're as obsessed with quick, easy, tasty coffee like I am, maybe you'll agree that it is worth it.

    I'm a happy customer, either way. ;)

  • Perfect Cup of Coffee Everytime...

    By A1QO88MU0PYJON on 2006-12-17
I was introduced to this coffee maker about 6 months ago when I spent five days at a lake house in Texas with ten of my gal pals to celebrate my birthday. Each morning we had the thrill of going through the many selections of K-Cups and picking out the perfect one to suit our individual needs for that morning! Everyone got exactly what they wanted - in about 40 seconds. No mess, no fuss, no leftovers to toss away.

After doing some more research into the variety of "single cup" brewing systems I realized that this really is THE ONE TO HAVE. Unlike the Tassimo brewing system, Keurig offers you a variety of gourmet coffee & tea manufacturers to choose from. Don't forget to order the K-Cup Reusable Coffee filter so that you can use your own coffee grounds - yet another option that Keurig offers. Variety is the spice of life so stock up on your favorite herbals teas & flavored coffees and remember to order the Spinning Carousel to hold your choices (27 slots) for easy viewing! There are many websites to choose from that sell these K-cups. Amazon has a decent variety but they're not always available.

We've had so many friends pop in at a moments notice and instead of hurrying to brew a pot of coffee we just direct them to the K-cups and let them choose for themselves. No more making a pot of decaf and then a regular pot to please everyone!

A great feature is that you can set a timer to have the system turn on so when you get up in the morning you have hot water ready to go and then set the timer to turn the machine off at another desired time. Keurig suggests leaving the system on all the time but I think it's unnecessary especially if you're only morning coffee drinkers like us! It only takes about 4 minutes for the water to heat up so if you can't wait that long you've got issues that need to be addressed with a professional.

Get this for your own household and one as a holiday gift to share with someone else. They'll thank you over and over again!

  • 2 New Units Quit Heating

    By A18SWB2BVIDG0O on 2007-04-11
Let me say that I really liked this appliance. I used it ALOT. 4-7 times a day I think. BUT, my first was purchased in November 2006. By New Year's day, it no longer heated water. Contacted MFG and wasn't very impressed although they offered to replace. Amazon replaced OVERNIGHT! Loved the replacement. In March 2007, the replacement no longer heated. Contacted MFG. and was suggested "using the appliance on a circuit/outlet with ANY other appliance was not recommended" she further offered that my electrical system might be substandard and the toaster I use twice a year was likely frying my Keurig. Called Amazon. They gladly processed my second B70 for return. My Cusinart Grind & Brew has been plugged into the same outlet for 5 years before the Keurig sent it to the basement. It still works great. Not sure why each of my 2 Keurig B70's died twice. Apparently, I'm not good at feeding and watering but, I did love it. That blue LED light made my houseguests seem like mosquitos at a lightbulb. I have a ton of K-cups in my cabinet. Maybe I'll try a smaller model.

  • Great machine (11/30/06 UPDATED 7/30/07)

    By AU8QBYK3WE1DG on 2006-11-30
My wife's Christmas present this year is a Keurig B70 coffee maker. We have a B100 at work that I was very impressed by and we decided that a home machine would nicely fill the need when we might want a cup or two, but might not want to make a full pot.

Long story short: we love the machine. So far, our favorite coffee is Timothy's Kona Blend -- but we haven't tried more than a handful of the scores of varieties of coffees and teas available for the beast. We got the extra filter for when we want to grind and use our own coffee in the machine, but have not yet had the opportunity to try it yet. It is a nice option to have.

We'll still use our Zojirushi thermal carafe brewer when we need a full pot, but the Keurig is wonderful for lesser amounts. Highly recommended.

I learned today that one of the coffee roasters that supplies the K-cups, Green Mountain, just bought Keurig (an American company with a Dutch name). I hope this won't limit the variety of coffees available for the machines -- that would be a major bummer if other roasters bowed out and would cause me to pull my glowing recommendation.

UPDATE 7/30/07: The B70 died today after 8 months of yeoman service. A call to Keurig revealed that the symptoms matched a "bad element" (one would assume heating element). A replacement machine in on its way (arrival in 3-4 days). Keurig doesn't want the old machine back, just a part. Keurig customer service was extremely pleasant and professional. Assuming the replacement machine arrives in good form, the five star rating is intact. I do wonder if there is a generic problem with heating elements in this model -- I'll have to look through the newer reviews to see if I should worry.

  • FABULOUS - AWESOME - HASSLE FREE - COFFEE/TEA/COCOA EVERY TIME
    By A2H5ROZZC74XN1 on 2006-12-04
The Keurig B-70 is my answer to easy coffee, anytime, quickly, with superb results. It also brews tea and makes hot chocolate simple. The machine itself is very high-tech looking and has a very expensive look and feel to it. It will look wonderful on any kitchen countertop or in any setting. I SIMPLY LOVE IT! Your guests will be drawn to it, it just looks so interesting with its mystical blue lights.

There is absolutely no mess and it's fun for your guests or family to be able to choose what they like from the hundreds of choices available, of course their choices will be limited to what you have on hand. Amazon seems to have the best deal on the K-cups which is the genius of the machine. Pop one in and in 30 seconds or so you have a steaming cup of your fsvorite beverage. Though it costs a bit more per beverage, you will easily make that up with its ease of use and convenience (saves a lot of time and mess). No longer will you be pouring half full pots of coffee down the drain.

I also own the B-60 and I noticed that a reviewer here stated there are no differences. There are three huge differences that the B-70 features over the B-60. The larger reservoir is very nice to have, I don't have to fill it so often. The fact that the B-70 brews a 12 oz cup is a giant difference to me. And last, the B-70 appears better engineered, it is much quieter and is also better looking.

I give this the HIGHEST RECOMMENDATION! AAA+++ It also has a one (1) year warranty, simply fill in the enclosed warranty card.

  • This might be important to you...
    By A2N5GRN6514JRK on 2006-10-19
Before I get started: I've used the Keurig B100 "commercial" coffee maker for over a year where I work. I am pleased with its performance, but price and limited features discouraged me from buying it for home use.

The good news: The B70 makes excellent coffee, many choices with coffee and tea, is very flexible with adjustable brewing temperature, brew size. Water reservoir easy and convenient to fill. Makes an excellent, quick cup of coffee with very little mess. Keurig k-cup coffees are not unreasonable in price and readily available from Amazon.

The not so good news: Very noisy. You can here it pump through-out the house, twice per cup. Small items moved about on my counter. Even though Keurig says this is their quietest brewer, it is considerably louder and vibrates much more than their B100 model.

Update: I contracted Keurig customer service and they suggested the unit be replaced or returned. Amazon replaced the unit promptly, and the replacement is a little quieter. I will keep and use the B70, and enjoy the coffee. If noise is important to you, I would recommend the B100--less flexible, heavier duty, about $50 more, discounted. I rate Keurig customer service above average.

  • This coffee maker does everything great except one thing
    By A56Y7MX2QGTN8 on 2006-11-05
This coffeemaker looks great and works well...everything is great except one thing..

it does not make a good cup of coffee.

The coffee is weak...it doesn't matter about the four brew sizes, they all make watered down coffee.....it is more like flavored water....

I tried different types of coffeee, I bought two of the containers where you can brew your own...it all comes out weak....

I really wanted to like this coffeemaker. First, I have lots of other coffeemakers, but liked the idea of fast perfect coffee in the morning with no clean-up....30 seconds after waking up, a fresh brewed coffee,

plus this is the most expensive coffee maker I have purchased....so I wanted to love it... now I don't know what to do with it...its fast and easy...but the coffee is weak...tried green mountain, timothys, others....

i tried to convince myself that the coffee was good, but finally have to admit that it is weak coffee flavored water,

If you don't like this review, then I suggest you spend your $200 plus $20 per 2 boxes of k-cups. After a week, you'll wish you had listened.

Update 12/23/2006....the coffee is okay at the smallest cup size.

  • Simply the best single cup "convenience" brewing system
    By A2C1HY1C779RR8 on 2007-03-25
I've used the B100 (Keurig's high-end home model) for the last four years and I have nothing but good things to say about it.

I'm here at Amazon as I want to buy another system for my office, so I plan to take the one I own now to the office (even though we get free coffee there) and I'm going to try the B-70 for home since we just remodeled and I think the silver look will contrast better with our new stainless kitchen appliances.

The Keurig system provides you with the following capabilities that IMO are superior to other single-cup "convenience" coffee systems available in the marketplace.

    1. The appliance is well-made. I've had my current unit for three years now without incidence (my first one died a few days after the warrantee expired -- because I did not descale the reservoir -- but after a call to Keurig they replaced free including shipping. Now I clean out the reservoir every four months now using vinegar). So I've had four total years of dependable use. A great value for an appliance that gets used every day and is left on constantly.

    2. The availability of coffee and tea for the "K-Cups" (the coffee "packages") is the best of any system. Keurig took a lesson from the computer industry and "open sourced" the K-Cup concept so that now a quick visit to their website will show true eclectic coffee selections. (In fact, about the only coffee I've not been able to find in K-Cups is my beloved "Sulawesi" but an email from Keurig tells me Green Mountain Coffees will soon be offering it). This is great because there are numerous places to buy K-Cups both online and at physical stores (Dallas has several stores), which when combined with the existence of numerous manufacturers of K-Cups, we all as consumers enjoy the benefits of competition within the K-Cup space.

    3. It does tea very well. I am a coffee drinker. My wife is a tea drinker. She tells me the Keurig tea K-Cups are superb and I myself even catch a cup of Orange Spice Tea now and then. Again, there is a wide selection of teas, just like with coffees from an equally wide array of vendors.

    4. It makes simple hot water too. Simply run it without a K-Cup placed. My wife likes to make hot chocolate while leaving my recently "used" K-Cup in the Keurig (makes a weak cup) so she gets a little coffee taste with her hot chocolate. I use it for many other uses as well. For instance I like those ramen "cup-o-noodles" things and I can add the necessary hot water to easily via my Keurig.

In summary, this is a great company that offers a quality product within a great peripheral system to support it.

  • Good machine (but the key is the K-Cup)
    By AKD7BCSVXZT8Z on 2006-11-28
After almost a month with the Keurig B70, I've finally come to truly enjoy my Keurig.

    PROS:
    * Sturdy machine
    * Large water reservoir
    * Reasonably quiet (main hum is during the priming of the pump)
    * Reuseable Coffee Filter option - so not dependent on K-Cup vendors

    CONS:
    * Finding good K-cups that generate reasonable strength coffee

    K-CUP RECOMMENDATION:
    * Van Houte Coffee, Eclipse Blend

    ADDITIONAL COMMENTARY:

My initial feeling was of disappointment after trying out the sample K-cups that came with the machine. Setting the Keurig to the smallest cup setting, I was predominantely getting watered down coffee as others have reported in the list of reviews.

I ordered "Diedrich - French Roast Dark Roast" as it purportedly was a stronger coffee. And, I did get a less watered down coffee. But, still not what I was looking for. Looking at the stream of coffee from the Keurig, it was still noticeably light compared to what one would typically make.

As a last attempt, I ordered "Van Houte Coffee, Eclipse Blend" which is reported to be one of the strongest coffees available in K-cup. And, I finally got the strength of coffee that I was looking for. The Van Houte is one of the more expensive K-cups available, but it is well worth the price, and it is still cheaper than getting coffee from a Starbucks or Peets. I typically use 2 K-cups (a cost of about 80 cents in total) to fill a travel mug for work.

  • A great system with just a liiiiitle farther to go.
    By AFMCOO5V53YAV on 2007-01-10
First off, my wife was against this product when I bought it. Mainly due to the price. However having an instant hot water machine around (instant soup, oatmeal, water for her tea bags) has won her over handily.

As far as the coffee maker goes, it may be too good. Seriously. I can actually taste slight differences between the individual K-cups of the same variety. The first batch of Heifer blend I got was absolutely delicious. This latest batch less so. That's where I see this product has room to grow. Consistency of coffee packaged in the K-cup. I do however see the challenge of blending several hundreds of pounds of beans together and then trying to get the same ratio in little Tablespoon sized cups.

I've tried quite a few varieties of coffee now and would like to share my favorites. Just so you know, I hate burned and coffee that's so thick you can chew it. The darker the roast the less caffeine in the bean so a "stiff" cup of coffee won't do as much as a light blend to pick you up. My favorites have a wonderful flavor that lingers after you finish the cup so much so that I drive by starbucks and am not even tempted to pull over. This was one of the things I was hoping to accomplish by purchasing this maker, to actually pay off the machine by not going to Starbucks or Carribou Coffee so much. It's working.

Green Mountain's Heifer Hope Blend, Diedrich's Colombia blend, and Timothy's Decaf Columbian are my favorites. Wonderful sweet flavors, with a chocolaty aftertaste that linger long after you've finished your last sip.

In contrast I was disappointed in the K-cup offerings for Chai. I prefer Stash brand chai or Starbuck's Chai. Both brands offered here were pale imitators. Here's an instance to just use the hot water function and brew your own.

The brew pump is whisper quiet, but the pump that fills the hot water tank from the reservoir is louder than I hoped for. It makes a buzzing sound. (Ever thought of using the same part for both functions????)

As for the cups a little quick surgery shows that it is a plastic cup with a little filter liner that stops about half the way down the cup, filled with coffee, then sealed with foil.

    Highs:
Wonderful coffee a cup at a time.
    Quick and convenient.
Lots of brand choices with more on the horizon.
Less trips to expensive coffee houses!

    Lows:
    "Buzzing" priming pump
Need to tighten up consistency of K-cups a little
    Chai offerings are weak.

  • Review from a rather demanding coffee lover....
    By A16LEOKKL1M6LU on 2006-11-23
First the positive: it looks great, with the blue lights. I don't really care about that aspect of it, but it's nice. Also, it's very quick, convenient, and easy to care for. Those qualities I definitely do care about, and this machine is about as good as it gets there.

Now the negative: the K-cups make very mediocre and rather weak coffee. My perspective is as a lifetime coffee connoisseur who loves and savors a rich, tasty, unique cup of coffee. I have the $200 KitchenAid Pro-Line grinder, and I rountinely spend big money on high quality coffee beans like Jamaican Blue Mountain and Kona. I use the Aeropress (a device somewhat similar to a French Press, but even better) to make coffee, and that method definitely fulfills my obsessive demand for the best coffee. But it's a major pain to go through all that work every morning, so I figured the Keurig would spare me from it on some lazy mornings, yet still provide great coffee.

After spending many dollars on all kinds of different K-Cups (Green Mountain, Tullys, Coffee People, Timothy's, Diedrich, etc), most of which I had to order from Amazon, my conclusion is that it only makes *acceptable* coffee - far from rich and tasty. None of the K-cups have been bad, but none have been anywhere near to the quality level I'm used to. That's understandable to a large extent, because they're pre-ground and naturally lose a lot of flavor as compared to grinding just before brewing. I expected that, but even so, the difference is more than I planned on.

The K-cups are simply too small; they don't contain enough coffee to make a flavorful cup unless you use the smallest 5 oz setting for one half of the cup, combined with the 7 oz setting for the other half. And you can;t use the 7 oz setting for that purpose unless you're using an Extra-Bold K-cup. (Forget the higher brewing sizes; they're worthless unless you like coffee water.) Also, the brew method on the Keurig is too fast to make really tasty coffee. The water shoots through it at high speed, not having enough time to absorb the full flavor of the grounds. When I use the Aeropress, I actually have to push down on the plunger for a minute or so, so every bit of coffee flavor/oils is extracted and it makes the distinctive flavors of the coffees I like stand out much more.

With the Keurig, there's very little distinction between all these different K-cups that I spent a lot of money on. Yes, there's a little difference - Timothy's Italian and Columbian taste very smooth and satisfying - but in general, they taste about the same: mediocre. Better than your typical Folgers or Maxwell House, for SURE...but still just upper-class mediocre. Even the Newman's Own is boring to me; tastes like all the rest. Probably because it's made by Green Mountain, who I suspect have one singular giant vat of very boring coffee that they use to fill every K-cup, and they just put a different name on the label. At least Timothy's and Diedrich have a little more flavor and distinction. Van Houtte seems to a bit stronger than the rest, but Amazon doesn't carry them for the most part. Just get the Eclipse blend by them, which is in most stores.

To sum up, you sacrifice quality for convenience on this machine. How important that is to you should tell you whether to buy it or not. But to be honest with you, I despise spending the time to make my "perfect cups" with the Aeropress - I have to go through the process 4 times in a row to fill a cup - so most of the time, I use the Keurig anyway. It's very hot, and the coffee is weaker and blander, but acceptable, and far better than drip-brewed, or instant, or the Senseo. For the next model, they need to make the K-cups bigger and work on a way to let the grounds saturate for a little longer. The method they use now inherently makes weak coffee.

Oh, and don't think the "My K-Cup" device will save the day. You can grind your own coffee and put it in there, and the resulting cup is definitely much better than a standard K-cup, but still far, FAR from what you'd taste if using an Aeropress or French press. Same problem: the water shoots through the My K-Cup device and doesn't have enough time to get to know the coffee and make better friends with it. It's just a quick "Hi, howareya" as it shoots through and into your cup, leaving a lot of flavor behind, which you then throw into the trash. And you'll have to do that multiple times just to fill a good-sized mug, because you can only use the 5 oz setting on the My K-Cup as well. So plan on going through the brewing/cleanup process 3 or 4 times. But hey, I have to do that with the Aeropress too, so I'm used to it. That's why I just use the K-cups most of the time: convenience and laziness!

PS: Keep in mind, I drink all coffee black, and if you're using cream and sugar then your taste experience would be much different than mine. If that's the case, then I think the Keurig would be fine for you because sugar/cream makes all coffee taste about the same.

  • I'm A Convert! Single-Cup Brewing Rocks!
    By A3HN8WYR7F1O38 on 2007-02-04
I've been skeptical of all single-cup brewers (as I am an admitted coffee snob), and had resisted even trying them until recently. A friend had the Tassimo system at home, and I found my trials with his machine acceptable, but not remarkable. It wasn't until I had opportunity to try a commercial version of the K-Cup system at a business recently and was impressed with the coffee it produced, as well as the variety of coffee options. However, I was still skeptical that a home version of this same system could produce the same quality level, but I was willing to give it a try. So, we ordered the B-70 based on its' feature set and larger reservoir size.

We're a month into the trial, and this brewer is NOT going back. This machine rocks and has quickly become our favorite appliance. The coffee is great and above all, consistent. We love the flexibility of the brew volume, the huge variety of available coffees and teas, and the fact that it is brew-ready whenever we want it (= fresher coffee). The brew flexibility is probably our favorite aspect in that I like a bold cup, and prefer a double of the Extra Bold cups with a 5.25oz brew volume, whereas my wife prefers the standard cups (often flavored) at a 7.25oz volume, or Extra Bold at 9.25oz (the 11.25oz is too thin for our liking). Guests love the novelty to select from our variety of coffees and teas, and we haven't found the brew time to be an issue at all.

Other benefits we've discovered along the way include that we're making fewer stops to our favorite local coffee shops (and saving money as a result); the whole process is so much cleaner than traditional methods of brewing (particularly as one who had ground his own beans); and that it really is a good idea to set the auto-off timer so that we aren't tempted to brew a cup of caffeine in the late afternoon/evening. I did acquire a "My K-Cup" system in case I wanted to use my own coffee, but have yet to use it as we've been too busy exploring the available K-Cups.

Bottom line - the initial outlay is not low, but the overall cost to us has been less, and we are very satisfied with the coffee and convenience. We recognize it's not for everyone, but if you're so inclined, we believe the Keurig and its' wide variety of available K-Cups is the best of the single-cup brewers. Good luck!

  • Environmentally Incorrect
    By A8E12RYF292QZ on 2007-12-03
When I bought this, I did not have much thought about this machine except just coffee itself. Now, having used this machine for 6 months, I found that I am throwing out so many plastic packages. So, I bought re-usable coffee filter, but it was just messy and the coffee was not that great. And all the convenience is gone. You might better use the normal brew coffee machine that use a single sheet filter.
There is an another option of using K-cup pod maker, which I haven't tried. But then again, you have to go through making pods by yourself, which may not be an option for the poeple who just want convenience.
Unless each k-cup is being made recyclable, wasting plastics for each cup of coffee is a wrong thing to do, especially when we have many ways of coffee making without hampering our environment. Besides, it doesn't make that great coffee, enough to justify damaging the environment.

  • Feeling like a child on Christmas morning!
    By A35VCQCYP0HHWW on 2006-11-02
I recently purchased the Keurig B-70 Gourmet Single Cup Home Brewing System. The best "toy" I purchased in a long time! It really isn't a toy, however, I now remember the feeling of a child on Christmas morning. Getting up in the morning and chosing the size and blend or flavor of my coffee--and it is not burnt because hubby made it an hour before--priceless.

I did my homework reading reviews and examining the coffee pod varieties on Home Brewing systems for over a year and I am pleased that I waited for this new model to come out. My husband and I have completely enjoyed this brewing system since receiving it a few weeks ago. You get a delicious hot cup of coffee in 45 seconds or less and the convenience of chosing your favoite blend or flavor. If you shop appropriately for coffee pod bargains you can spend as low as .30 per cup--now that is a bargain compared to the favorite coffee shops!

I cannot compare with the other Keurig models, however, I can say that I am thrilled that the B-70 offers the travel mug brew size, as that is the size of my favorite mug at home and I use the "bold" coffee pods for that size cup of coffee. The varieties of coffee available is excellent--the downside, almost floating because we have been trying all the blends and flavors! And don't forget to try the "My K-cup" filter for all of your other favorite coffees.

  • Good coffee . . . . . when it works
    By A2E8MK5Y0QBWXY on 2007-05-11
I love the coffee, although it is weaker than I would like when I brew larger sizes and I wish the coffee was a little hotter. For the larger coffee sizes I use GM's Dark Magic flavor and this solves the flavor problem. Now to my BIG problem with this machine - it keeps malfunctioning on me. I bought it in December, 2006 and by February 2007 it read "Not Ready" on the display panel for no apparent reason and refused to brew. Customer service was great - replaced it within 5 days, but by May, 2007 it happened again. I am now on my 3rd B70 in less than 5 months and I am starting to think there is some defect with this machine. I take care of it, it is plugged into an outlet with no other appliances, we have had no power outtages, yet it keeps breaking down. It gets a good workout - 5-6 cups of coffee or tea a day, but still. A friend of the family had the same issue with his machine and is now on his 2nd B70. I had a Krups coffee maker for 18 years before I replaced it with the Keurig, so as you can imagine I am quite disappointed that a $200 coffee maker keeps breaking down. Call me pessimistic, but I fully expect to have problems a couple months down the line with #3. Friends and family have other Keurig models and have not encountered this problem, so if #3 breaks, I will move on to another model or another brand.

  • Easy and Cool In The Kitchen
    By A1424220V2JLXV on 2006-11-18
We had been enjoying the whole experience of the Keurig B50, when I got the email and blogsite updates over the past few months that Keurig was promoting a new and improved single-cup brewer. I confess - I coveted this new machine in a big way. So when we were the recipients of a bright shiny new B70 last week on our front stoop, it was very much like Christmas for me. My wife just smiled, and the kids gave out a sincere, "Whoa, that's cool!" at our new kitchen friend.

Everything that we liked about the B50 is there for the B70 - with the addition of larger cup sizes and the overall look and feel. The coffee just tastes good, first and foremost. I've tasted cups from other single-serve brewers, and most of them have been barely more appetizing than generic vending machine drop-the-cup coffee. From my first experience with the Keurig machines, however, I was amazed how good the brew tasted. The home brewers make a great cup of coffee without having to waste a pot, or lose the coffee all over the counter when the previous machine's brew basket got finicky. The additional My K-cup attachments allow for grinding our own beans, too - so as a coffee snob, I'm hooked.

The Platinum B70 adds selection for cup size - right now, I think our best default size is 9.25oz, filling out most travel mugs and our normal in-house mugs well without getting watery on the k-cups we've tried so far. And it has a larger reservoir for water, meaning we can get more coffee for fewer refills in the kitchen sink. All of these things would be enough, right?

But wow, it is just so cool looking. The blue LED lights that make the water glow on the left, and the blue LCD screen on the right that shows the clock, menu, cup selection, and the chrome fixtures - even the spring-loaded holder in the front top of the brewer - all of that combines to make it more than just a good coffee, taking us into the realm of a really cool experience. The kids oooo and aaahhh every time they walk into the evening kitchen, seeing Daddy's glowing blue coffee brewer, just wanting to marvel in its glow.... okay, that's a little too melodramatic, but only slightly.

If you like coffee and spend more than $10 per day, or throw away more than a third of a pot of coffee each morning, or if you enjoy coffee but avoid making it at night because for just one cup that whole pot will go to waste - I think you owe it to yourself to try this brewer out. Not just in the store, but blue and glowing in your own kitchen. Trust me - "Merry Christmas" is a great feeling.

  • Convenience well-worth the price
    By A14ZKVDMU2S7S4 on 2007-08-24
Ok... I was not only skeptical but infuriated when I discovered we added yet ANOTHER coffee maker to our "coffee altar." You know what I mean - an entire buffet table dedicated to coffees, flavorings, creamers, and an espresso maker, Senseo(tm) pod-coffee maker, and 12-cup Thermos(tm) coffee maker. We pray to this altar religiously.

So, when this coffee maker arrived I was to say the least, dubious.

I am completely changed... and not just because I've been juiced on caffeine for a week trying all the coffees! (Wonder if there's a 28-day program...)

If you are NOT new to Keurig makers, skip this paragraph: The concept here is simple--hermetically seal fresh-roasted and ground coffee in single serving, disposable coffee filters about the size of a very large creamer cup. Drop the cup in the obvious orifice and close the maker. Two needles pierce the top and bottom of the cup, and the top needle sends in water heated to precisely the correct temperature (which you can change if you are feeling adventurous). The coffee drip-filters through the disposable Keurig-cup (K-cup) via the lower needle and into your coffee mug. (The properly cultured male will remember to open the maker and discard the spent cup, keeping at bay frustrations of the spouse.)

Every cup of coffee comes out fresh and perfect. Heating/prep time is about 30 seconds; brewing the same. A box of 25 samples accompanies the maker. True, I didn't like all the samples, but they were fresh and perfectly brewed just the same. And I discovered that premium (single-source, as opposed to blended) really is much better coffee.

It is extremely easy to use. It power up and down at a preset times, cannot poke you with the needles, and cannot be operated when low on water or without a k-cup in the holder. The only negative is that there is only one size of k-cup. Larger volume serving selections (e.g., auto-tumbler size on this model or humungous mug on the larger model) will produce a weak coffee if a lightly toasted brand is selected. With the Senseo you can double-up the pods, but unlike the pods, K-cups never go stale. Thus, there is no advantage to the extra large sized system with its large water resevoir or the extra-extra large cup.

You pay for convenience: K-cup coffees are 4-5x more expensive than 12-cup makers by volume, but we tend to waste 30-50% of the coffee in the thermos anyway. K-cups are ready in 30-60 seconds instead of 20 minutes for a properly brewed pot. On the other hand, I'm not cleaning up coffee grounds from the grinder every evening.

There is a smaller system with 2 serving sizes and smaller resevoir. The small cup serving is less effective unless you want to brew teas (the smallest serving setting).

At 16x cost per volume compared to tea bags, I found the convenience factor insufficient to justify the use of K-cup teas. However, the samples were scrumptious.

Bottom line: We haven't dismantled the altar, but it is less cluttered. The Senseo has been sent to the office, but I don't use it there because my cubicle neighbor has a Keurig The 12-cup is in the cupboard over the fridge for guests. You'll have to pry the expresso maker from my cold, dead fingers. Only a decent espresso maker makes a real espresso. Nevertheless, Keurig is going to revolutionize home and office coffee addiction -- you coffee suppliers better get moving on k-cup packaging!

  • Great when it works, just died for no apparent reason.
    By A9GVUJYVX8YUI on 2006-12-03
This Platinum B70 coffee maker was working just fine for the last 2 months I have used it. Today, I came home, and it keeps saying "NOT READY", but I have enough water in the reservoir, and it is primed, and I have switched several k-cups in with no obstructions. I wish the machine would tell me specifically why it is not ready; I have absolutely no idea why it stopped working. Very frustrating when you pay $200 for a coffee maker, and it goes out in the first couple of months of using it. Now I have a cheap plastic P.O.S., and I am not very happy about it.

  • Save your money, buy the B60...there is NO difference...
    By A2EY5U2WLPSI6G on 2006-12-07
    except a larger tank.

I recently purchases the B60 Special Edition and it has a blue light in the tank and the controls are blue. I researched the both of them but decided that the extra $50.00 for a little larger tank was not worth it.
The B70 maybe quieter but come on people, its only on for less than a minute.

    I rate the B60 a 5 stars.

  • Good Concept, but very awful coffee
    By A3K0AVRYV7IT02 on 2007-02-19
During the past few months I have been stopping frequently at my local coffee shop for various different coffee drinks; not necessarily a fancy drink, just a good cup of coffee. My fourteen year old daughter had lately developed a taste for coffee, also, so I decided that the good old Cuisinart coffee maker wasn't good enough! I initially thought I would like a cappuccino/espresso maker, but after reading the reviews of the Keurig, I decided that it was the one. I purchased the B-70 because it was the top of the line and probably was the best bet. I also purchased the K-filter so I could use my favorite Tim Horton's ground coffee. It looked very cool, but every cup of coffee we made, with the k cups, with the filter, flavored or none, had this awful, metal after taste. I had read several reviews that said it tasted like brown water, however, the dark roast coffees were plenty strong enough, just that everything ended up tasting like metal. My son said that we should give it a few days, perhaps it was just because it was new. So, we did give it a few days, and it still tasted like metal! So, I packed it up and returned it and am back to using my Cuisinart coffee maker! The Keurig is a great concept and it worked great-the coffee was made in a minute and was piping hot, just not great tasting. It's not loud at all; I don't know what some of the reviewers are talking about with that! It looks very nice, but handsome is as handsome does and my family and I just were not pleased with the after taste. I think now I will look for a cappuccino/espresso maker!

  • OK experience
    By APDEEXY0YMU9V on 2007-11-04
I purchased this product because I wanted to cut the amount of coffee I drink back to one cup each day. What better way to do that than to brew just one great cup at a time?

My experience with the Keurig B-70 has been OK. The machine is attractive (though the eerie blue light takes a little getting used to), functional, and easy to use and to clean. It brews rapidly and without too much noise. Other reviewers have mentioned that the settings for larger mugs brew a weaker cup of coffee. This is true, and unfortunate; the weakness is clear even with a slightly larger-sized kitchen mug. The coffee is also not as hot as I would have imagined, though it is certainly hot enough.

A few downsides to my experience:
    - The previous reviewer who suggested that the reusable filter should be included in the cost of this expensive machine is right. A reusable filter is much better for the environment than a K-cup, and gives this machine a desirable flexiblity.
    - The Amazon description does not specify that the machine includes a sampler package of K-cups. No need to buy a bunch to use right away.
    - One morning, the machine appeared to function normally but the cup it brewed was absolutely full of grinds. I chalked it up to a faulty K-cup and brewed a replacement mug, which was fine. A waste of a K-cup, though.
    - On another morning, the machine brewed a cup that was only half full. I tried again and this time the machine thought it had brewed a cup but no coffee had come out at all. Both problems seemed to be caused by the water receptacle, which was not locked into place, though the machine indicated "ready to brew." I was afraid I had gotten a lemon of a machine, but I think they haven't gotten all the kinks worked out yet. For $199, I'd hope for more consistent reliability.

  • The ONLY Single Cup Brewer to OWN!
    By A2KOK3XWNNEOQV on 2006-11-21
I will make this short and sweet:

A Keurig is a hit at any party, guests love the ability to choose exactly what kind of coffee to have with dessert!

I started with a Senseo a little over two years ago and moved to the Keurig B60 last year. When the B70 came out recently I knew it was time to upgrade. I am very glad I did! This machine is a little quieter than the B60 and the blue LEDs that illuminate the water tank are a nice touch. Add the K-Cup filter and you can brew your favorite ground coffee anytime. No need to worry about the K-Cups not being produced in the future, because if you have the K-Cup filter all you need is some freshly ground coffee and you're ready to go!

Make the right choice and hop on board with the B70 ~ you'll enjoy it!

  • I'm in LOVE...
    By AEIATGNPYTIJ4 on 2006-11-26
I'm the only hot-beverage drinker in this house, aside from the kids occasional cup of hot chocolate in the winter. I was so tired of either dumping coffee down the drain or hurrying to drink it before it went over the edge, leaving my cup of tea in the microwave for hours after forgetting it. I had a really good coffee maker, but it couldn't make good coffee if you were just trying to make a little, it was always too weak or too strong. I got this Keurig as an anniversary gift a couple weeks ago. I'd been oogling at the older models for months, almost bought a B60 on several occasions, and then have been price-shopping this one online since it came out. I LOVE THIS COFFEE MAKER. It makes a GREAT cup of coffee and tea (haven't tried the hot chocolate yet). I've had a blast shopping the internet for K-cups, which come in so many varieties. Had house guests last weekend and they thought it was the coolest. It was nice that after I showed them how to use it, they could pick out and make their own coffee, without the old "is there any more coffee?" and that phrase "don't make a pot just for me..."

No mess, no hassle. When you want a cup of coffee, you can have a cup RIGHT NOW, just pop in a K-cup and push the button. I've even used it to make iced tea for my husband (Just brewed tea into an ice filled travel mug, on the strongest setting...ie smallest cup). Awesome, and looks great on my countertop.

  • Perfect for me!
    By A2JY6OIKDMIKY4 on 2006-12-06
This is the perfect coffee brewer for me. I was so excited when single cup brewers started showing up on the market, but I had no idea which one to purchase. I don't like drinking stale coffee or reheating coffee and the mini 4-cup brewers don't make that great a pot of coffee. Going to the coffee stores is a VERY expensive cup of coffee even if it is quite good. I tried a cup of coffee from this brewer in a high end kitchen store and it was a great cup. Plus with all the drink options (reg, decaf, tea, hot choco), I was sold. I bought from Amazon on a special purchase deal and got the My K-Cup for free.

I love this brewer. I get one perfect fresh, hot cup of tea, coffee, or cocoa every time. There is very little waiting and no filters or pots to mess with. The different cup sizes, the timer, the style are all great features.

  • AWESOME! Perfect
    By A7SK91SE8UZE6 on 2007-03-08
I have the B60 and my grand father who is 72 loved the coffee and how easy it was to just brew up whatever you wanted within seconds, so me and my family pitched in and bought this latest version the B70 along with his favorites and some new K-cups to try and he and my grand-mother who is 68 LOVE IT!!! They've had it a month and they are still talking about how much they love it. They drink coffee every morning, of course and it's so easy to use, so fast and you don't have to make a whole pot when you just want one cup.

I rely heavily on Reviews when I buy stuff at Amazon, so I wanted to be sure and let everyone know this is a great product for people who drink one or two cups, need something fast and even for older people. I'm single and don't drink a lot of coffee so it's perfect for me to make some hot tea or a cup of flavor'd coffee when I'm in the mood, fast easy, no hassle.

  • Keurig = thumbs up, Tassimo = Thumbs down
    By A2WCCDI1NHFFNO on 2007-04-13
Purchased the Tassimo machine first wasn't so impressed so went back and bought the B-70 instead.

    1) quieter
    2) faster
    3) better coffee selection
    4) timer and auto on/off

What a difference, the B-70 is quieter, easier to use and a lot "smarter". The Tassimo took several minutes to warm the water and wouldn't let you press "start" until the water was hot, meaning you had to insert the pod, and then stand there until the ready light came on - hardly automatic. The Keurig, on the other hand, lets you insert the cup and hit "start" it takes care of heating the water and brewing all on its own. It also heats up the water at least twice as fast!

While the Tassimo offers some extras like cappucino, that doesn't outweigh all the idiosyncracies in its operation. Without a doubt the Keurig is the best choice for pod coffee makers.

  • This is a great coffee maker!!!
    By A1JK59EJMZYSAS on 2007-06-17
I bought this for my husband for Father's Day. I figured he only drinks 2 cups of coffee a day so the price was pretty reasonable. If he drank much more that that I am not so sure I would have made this purchase. The k-cups are pricey and they are not easily found in local stores. That being said it makes a very nice cup of coffee. My husband drinks the 9oz size and then when his cup is brewed (this is the best level flavor for him) I just lift the lever and lower it back again then press the 'brew' button. This makes a very very light coffee flavor and then I add a packet of hot chocolate to my water. I can have a nice cup of mocha flavored hot chocolate. I can usually get 2 cups of hot chocolate flavored with diluted coffee. So that was a nice bonus!

I also purchased the filter so you can use your own grounds. You have to play around with the amound of grounds used to get the flavor you desire. Again, it makes a good cup of coffee...the k-cups are the preferred method. But when you can't always find or drive the distance to the only store that sells the k-cups or your order has not arrived yet this filter is fine to use.

Don't waste your time buying the hot chocolate packs...especially the ones you pour directly into your cup (there are some that come in the k-cup package). They are more pricey than they are worth. If you just brew a hot cup of water and use any brand hot chocolate it boils down to the same thing (no pun intended :) )

To help my husband out, if I see the water line going down I just go ahead and bring it back to level. I keep a filtered water pitcher in the refrigerator just for this.

I should mention I am not a coffee connoisseur and neither is my husband. We just know what tastes good to us. The coffee brewed in this machine seems to taste better than the other home coffee makers we've used in the past. My 'mocha hot chocolate' is about the best way to have chocolate for me. I am glad I took the suggestion from another reviewer on that one.

Another nice thing about this is the total lack of mess involved. I simply keep the water level full, purge the system when needed, and use the k-cups for the most part. I don't have spills on the counter, coffee grounds scattered about, or gross coffee sitting in the carafe until my husband finally dumps it. There is no dirty carafe to worry about. The machine stays very clean without that nasty coffee build up you see on the conventional makers.

Some mention the watery flavor when you use the larger cup settings. This is the case with the highest setting. As I stated, my husband's setting is the 9-oz size using regular flavor coffee. The bold will give it a little more heft in taste. He seems to like either one. If you prefer that extra boost in flavor then just go with the bold flavors. Some day I hope to see k-cups with more of an espresso flavor by using the smallest cup size. Personally, I like the coffee so weak that I can add the hot chocolate for a different taste all together!...hence my waiting until his coffee is already brewed no matter what the flavor.

I am glad I chose the B-70 over all the other sizes out there. The larger water reservoir makes a difference. It is also nice to choose between 4 sizes. I like the cups over the 'pods' because they are sealed until they are needed. Really if you are going to drop serious money on a coffee maker...get a serious coffee maker.

I could have gone with a regular coffee maker and my husband would have been fine with that. But it was Father's Day and he deserves something extra special. The only reason there is four stars instead of five is the difficulty in finding the k-cups and once you do find them the price. Still, I highly reccommend this item.

  • Watery Defect....
    By A21NYSSEHLTVK9 on 2007-12-01
I am now on my 2nd B70 at home and I have a 3rd at my office. For those who have posted that the coffee tastes watery and bland your unit is defective. The 1st one I brought home made watery coffee that tasted like bad airline coffee. We called Keurig and they said return it for an exchange. I did and the new one one made (notice past tense) great coffee and now after a month it is making watery coffee. Why I don't know seems like a pretty basic operation. The one at my office works fine.

Obviously there is a defect that causes the unit to make watery coffee. So if your unit isn't making delicious coffee and tea the unit is bad. Doesn't say much for the build quality on this model.

  • The Keurig B70 is a Vibration Machine!
    By A2WTERUL471U32 on 2007-12-01
First off, the Keurig B70 makes great coffee. And the K cup system is great.

However, this B70 sounds and feels like it's grinding coffee. Every time one brews a cup of coffee, the machine vibrates before and after the cup is filled. If I leave a spoon on the drip plate, it will vibrate off. I've tried placing the B70 on various vibration absorbing materials, but it doesn't help. I've spoke with Keurig customer service twice, and they tell me this vibration is normal for the B70. I wish I could have seen it in action prior to purchase.
