Anti-phishing capabilities in Office Outlook 2007 warn you about potentially threatening content right from within the e-mail message. View larger. | Improved E-Mail Control and Protection Outlook 2007 helps you control your information while keeping you safer from junk mail and malicious sites. The junk e-mail filter, introduced in Outlook 2003, helps prevent junk e-mail messages from cluttering your Inbox. Outlook 2007 also features new anti-phishing features that disable threatening links and warn you about possibly malicious or phishing content within an e-mail message. For additional protection and security, Exchange Server 2007 acts as the first scan on incoming e-mail, determines the legitimacy of the e-mail message, and if applicable, disables links or URLs present in the e-mail message to help protect users. Control Distribution of Sensitive Work Help protect your company assets by preventing recipients from forwarding, copying, or printing important e-mail messages by using information rights management (IRM) functionality. You can even specify an expiration date for the message, after which it cannot be viewed or otherwise acted upon. (IRM functionality requires Microsoft Windows Server 2003 or later running Microsoft Windows Rights Management Services). Maintain Compliance With Managed E-mail Folders Exchange Server 2007 offers managed e-mail folders, a new approach to document retention, archiving, and regulatory compliance. You'll be able to see and interact with these folders just like any other mail folder, but the messages stored within them gain retention, archive, and expiration policies defined by the administrator. With managed e-mail folders, users and administrators can easily comply with various forms of external regulation and internal company policies regarding message retention. Outlook 2007 E-mail Postmark The Outlook 2007 E-mail Postmark helps ensure that e-mail reaching your inbox is legitimate and that e-mail you send will be trusted by the recipient's client. Creating mail with E-mail Postmark uses new technology that Microsoft has developed as part of the ongoing effort to curb junk mail. This technology asks the sender's computer to perform a computation or puzzle, and then assigns this work as a token of legitimacy to the e-mail message. These e-mail postmarks are designed to make it very time-consuming and technologically detrimental for users to send mass e-mail like spam, yet they do not change the user experience of sending e-mail.

Caveat Emptor!!!!!! By ATCHAUWF2X5E5 on 2007-02-09
Potential buyers need to know--and Microsoft will NOT tell them--that Office 2007 products, including Outlook, do not exist side-by-side happily with older versions. For example, if you upgrade one Office product, such as Outlook, everytime you start an older Office program, such as Word 2003, it will "reinstall" itself. Then, when you start Outlook 2007, it will "reinstall" itself, etc. Furthermore, if you install an Office 2007 suite that does not include Outlook, it will be impossible to install an older version of Outlook.
Cosmetic Makeover By A2KPZN03H47TRR on 2007-02-06
The new version of Outlook is VERY similar to the previous version. Cosmetics are neater, but wholesale revamping of the user interface that took place in Word, Excel, and PowerPoint missed this version. Usability is good, and I hope that security is improved, but I see no "burning" need to upgrade to the new version.
Works great side by side with Office 2003 By A1F1A0QQP2XVH5 on 2007-05-20
Better interface than Outlook 2003. Cleaner with a nicer calendar. I installed Outlook 2007 and OneNote 2007 as stand-alone Office Upgrades alongside an Office 2003 install. No problems. I had seen reviews where other users say a reinstall screen pops up everytime they switch between 2003 and 2007 products. That has not happened with my install.
PROBLEMS! By A8K4BIEHMT7JL on 2007-02-12
Oh my gosh what a pain in the arse. It says on installation that there's an option to keep all of your older versions of Office software but it apparently DELETES Microsoft Outlook XP Pro entirely. This was the free trial software from Microsoft's website.
This wouldn't be so much of a problem except that now I can't create new emails or reply to emails. I've been on hold with Microsoft Customer Support and was misrouted to support for Excel so I just wasted nearly 45 minutes.
Microsoft is a DISASTER. Can't live with em, can't live without em.
I actually purchased Outlook 2007 from amazon.com but I'm wondering if it was a mistake...
Oh, and if you have a dual-monitor system the new Office 2007 software might not work with some of the extremely practical software features of your video card (switch monitor, single-monitor maximize etc.).
Change for change's sake? By A2ELVTIUZ2IA78 on 2007-08-09
I have been a satisfied user of Outlook 2000 since it came out. I bought Outlook 2007 for my wife, since we switched from Comcast to Qwest broadband. As it turns out the Qwest sub-account emails cannot be set up to send mail using SMTP protocol (can you believe it?) So we were forced to upgrade since you can set up Outlook 2007 to do http email. After numerous tries to install it and having the install abort every time, I read reviews on-line and discovered that you actually have to uninstall the entire Office 2000 suite before you can load Outlook 2007. Now that sounds like the evil empire Microsoft market development team finding a sneaky way to make you have to go and upgrade everything! The diabolical fiends at Microsoft! Fortunately I had purchased Office Home and Student and Outlook in a bundle package, since I needed to upgrade my copy of Excel Office 2000 (another fun MS story...) Once installed, it works fine, and is oh-so-pretty with colors and neat new colorful wonderful, exciting, thrilling, and fancy things! Oh My!
The search feature thing is irritating and slows down performance while it is out gathering eggs on-line, or whatever it is doing that you don't have a clue about, yet is hogging your resources. Now I am afraid to try to install Outlook 2007 on my machine, and since Outlook 2000 is working fine, I figure I'll wait until Microsoft figures out a way to make it quit working with a "security patch" that will kill it dead : )
- oh, the horror! Outlook 2007 & Vista
     By A1RNS9XJOHEBP on 2007-06-26
What a disappointment. I have a dual-core, 2GHz processor, 2GBytes of RAM, and Outlook 2007 on Vista is too slow to use. When I try to compose an email, the busy cursor is almost only on. When it goes out, all that I have to do to bring it back is enter a single key stroke. It cannot begin to keep up with my typing, and editing a typo is impossible.
I've turned off as much of the indexing, as many of the widgets as I can, disabled all the RSS feeds, etc., but no joy.
At this point, I'm hoping a service pack will fix my problem, but I am not a happy camper.
- OUTLOOK 2007 INCOMPATIBLE WITH OFFICE 2003
     By ASCFFB5FI123Z on 2007-09-17
Installing stand alone Outlook 2007 will corrupt your Office 2003 suite. Tech support will advise you to erase the components of your damaged 2003 in order to install Outlook 2007, promising to send you a 2003 replacement disk if you don't have your old disk. By attempting to install Outlook 2007, you will lose your entire 2003 and can only obtain a replacement disk for an additional $25.
But it gets worse. If your system came pre-installed, they won't send you a replacement disk; they'll refer you to your computer manufacturer. Ever tried to get a disk from Compaq?? Or Dell? Or Best Buy?
BEWARE OF OUTLOOK 2007!!
- Barely no visual changes, but great ones
     By A16WWJELL0MWJM on 2007-04-10
Outlook 2007 did not carry all the fancy visual changes that other applications from the 2007 suite did (e.g. Word, Excel...), but the changes were quite awesome.
First, it now has a sidebar with your tasks, a calendar and TO DOs...
When you are on the calendar tab, you will notice a beter organization and, on the bottom, there will be the tasks due each day.
Integration with other calendar tools and online schedules is much better.
Also, it is much better integrated with Windows Mobile.
If you buy Office 2007 Home and Student, don't forget to buy at least one copy of this Outlook because it is not in there and it is necessary for synching your Windows Mobile device.
- Version Warning - No CRM
     By A3K25BWNVEIHAK on 2007-06-18
This was the only Outlook 2007 version listed for sale on Amazon, so I ordered it. Found that it does not have Customer Relationship Management (which MS refers to in Outlook as Business Contact Management). I have since found that BCM probably would have been a useful tool in managing my 1500+ contacts. So if that is important to you, order "Outlook 2007 with BCM" from a vendor that offers that version. Amazon should state somewhere in the product description that this version does NOT have BCM.
- Had to update due to Vista, happy with Outlook, not happy with Microsoft
     By A2G592Y310G84Z on 2007-12-17
I was using Outlook 2003 and was content to keep doing so, but it and Vista did not completely get along. It would not remember my password and forced me to log on every time. Not a huge deal but annoying. The final straw was that I upgraded to Publisher 2007 and the email creation program required me to use Outlook 2007 as the mail program. This kind of thing irritates me - forcing me to purchase new products when the older one works fine. There is a lot of talk about this on every product web site. My take is that I understand inter-operability but when you make your own software obsolete, the marketing and PR problems you create eliminate all good will you have created with the new product offering. If Microsoft would offer truly updated and "must have" new programs, people would buy them without being forced too. Instead they offer warmed over "upgrades" that, for the average user offer nothing different except a few new colors and interfaces. I am strongly considering purchasing all new Apple equipment and leaving the PC world behind. Yeah, the initial buy in is expensive($1200 for a laptop instead of $600) but after all the upgrades and other changes you need to make with Vista, what's the difference?
The outlook 2007 program is fine. It has all the features I need and some bright new colors to boot. No complaint except that I didn't need it until I was forced to buy it.
- for those who want fixing outlook as a hobby
     By A340YFH5WMTFHV on 2007-07-01
This is the most unstable software I have ever used. It has crashed at least 50 times this weekend, as I can't even keep it open long enough to fix it. Google "Outlook 2007 crashes" and you'll see I'm far from alone. If you can get it running, it's apparently the slowest email client ever. Yeah, Google "Outlook 2007 slow", too.
- Outlook 2007 doesn't live up to expectations
     By A35UZXLF6Q01KS on 2008-04-20
I have used and loved Outlook for many years, along with the rest of the Office suite. To get up to date, I just bought the home & student Office suite 07 sans Outlook and bought Outlook 07 separately (thinking $200 total was better than $400). Fine - except this Outlook doesn't hook up with the suite, won't let me set default fonts, and is driving me nuts. I sometimes receive a message in white font on white and can't read it until I hit forward to put it into a message whose font I can change so I can finally see it. I looked it up on Microsoft. It's designed to act this way. Thumbs down.
- No Environmentalists Allowed
     By A1NLX2NT3A5Z1U on 2007-03-30
This latest version of Microsoft Outlook is definitely an improvement over the 2002 version. It took a while to install (at least 15 minutes), but it booted up fine after that and imported all of my existing messages and settings without a hitch. Yes, most of the improvements do appear to be cosmetic, but I can say that the junk mail filter is truly improved. A hundred dollars worth? Maybe not quite that much. But all in all I would say this is a worthwhile upgrade from what I can tell.
To address some of the issues I have heard, I am using Windows XP Professional and have Office 2000 Profressional (I had previously updated Outlook to 2002). My existing office suite works without any issues whatsoever. No re-installations, no problems at all.
OK, so my only gripe, and the reason for dropping not one, but TWO - yes TWO - stars is the absolutely most awful packaging in the history of all packages. First of all, it's about two inches thick and is made of solid plastic. With no manual and a CD that's less than 1 mm thick, well - you do the math. There's just no reason for it. Plus - I think I'm a fairly smart guy, but oh my goodness was this thing ever impossible to get into! Peel the side label off - that part was easy enough. But then there was a top seal that was near impossible to remove, and then a pulldown section that doesn't pull down at all until you squeeze two obscure side tabs. And then, if getting into the thing wasn't bad enough, there's a required product key that I swear is welded onto the inside of the plastic case. No joke, you can't remove it. So, even if you want to get rid of this monstrosity of a package, you can't because you need the product key sticker which you literally can't remove from the box. I wrote down the product key and threw the whole plastic nightmare in the trash. But I wasn't happy about it, I can tell you that. What an incredible waste. I guess Microsoft hasn't jumped on the whole Global Warming / Save The Environment bandwagon yet. When you have that much money, I guess who cares about a little thing like the earth.
Other than that, a decent piece of software.
- Best Outlook Ever but Rough instalation
     By A376YQD18P4J2C on 2007-04-12
I just bought my 2nd copy of Outlook 2007. I really like the many more email color categories, and you can assign your own name tags to them too. Much easier to use, runs faster, better features. On the downside no documentation and MS online documentation is incomprehensible. I wound up spending an hour on the phone with MS support. If you are already running an earlier version of Office with Outlook, you must first go to add/remove programs and change office to make Outlook un-available. Then and only then put in the disk and install. Do it any other way and you will be very sorry, all kinds of error msgs. and even your previous version of Outlook will no longer work. And yes it does import your msgs. and settings from your previous version. I run XP
- Microsoft Outlook 2007 is horribly frustrating
     By A41V2AQQCK8SG on 2007-09-13
For the past few months I have been trying to figure out how to transfer emails and contacts from one outlook program to another with zero success. No thing makes sense anymore as it seems that the mission of this program is to frustrate you to the point where you end up losing your mind. Just today I went to a microsoft site to start a thead which might allow me to ask a question in which I might find a solution to this problem. No success whatever. The latest problem? I now have to figure out why the thead doesn't allow me to ask a question. HOWEVER, the computer does beep everytime I try (which is kinda of exciting!) with zero success. It use to be so simple; to the point where you could sort of figure things out on your own. Not anymore.
- Outlook 2007 Cleaner and more useful
     By A1FUXTGD90KMOB on 2008-02-04
I loaded Outlook 2007 over my Outlook 2003 and it coexists just fine with the rest of my Office 2003 applications. I have not had any problems with the programs or sharing information between them.
While I do not see the advantage to upgrading the entire Office 2003 suite Outlook 2007 has given me a better view of my appointments and makes it easier to track my to-do list.
I recommend the change to people that use Outlook consistently but do not want to change their entire Office Suite.
- Outlook 2007 - Be aware...
     By AZ8UNCP5ZXDWC on 2008-01-21
Any review of this product must start with this: CAUTION: MICROSOFT DOES NOT INCLUDE "OUTLOOK 2007" IN MS OFFICE HOME/STUDENT EDITION! DO NOT BUY MICROSOFT OFFICE 2007 HOME AND STUDENT EDITION!
That's why I had to buy it separately and why I am reviewing it here - to spread the word so others can be aware of the change (Microsoft sure won't broadcast it!). I have no problem with Microsoft charging whatever they want for their software. What I do have a problem with is Microsoft using the "bait and switch" sales practice, and not informing their customers of the change.
As far as reviewing Outlook, it's nearly the same as the previous version. It still needs more convenient ways to block junk and SPAM email. It still does not include a backup feature. It still requires the user be fairly good at file management in order to use it. In other words, if you now use Outlook 2003, don't bother with upgrading. If you don't have it, download Windows Live Mail. It works better and it's FREE.
- Awful Reliability. Crashes Continuously and it is SLOW on a very FAST PC
     By AWXG2BI1WZFAT on 2007-03-09
I bought 2007 Outlook, including Business Manager, hoping to finally have an Outlook that could manage Tasks Better and do customized reporting.
It has been a Horror. I am running this on a fast PC with tons of memory and harddrives....
Switching Views (where it builds a view) takes minutes. The software crashes continuously during the day (twice or more hourly).
It is undependable and the new views take forever to load.
NOT RECOMMENDED. Use Outlook 2003 if you must use Outlook at all.
If anyone has recommendations for an effective email client with a real task manager and report manager, please post them somewhere!
Frustrated beyond belief with this "new" unimproved outlook.
This was a downgrade. It doesn't work as reliably or as simply as the various webmails available these days.
Actually, it just does not work AT ALL. Perpetual crash and burn.
- Wait for Vista improvements before buying
     By A1F1SRF3Y5C74K on 2007-03-09
Albeit this is obviously a MS product, it is not fully compatible with the "upgrade" versions of MS Windows Vista (at least the "Ultimate" version). Something went awry with the installation process to the extent that not all of the features are available, just to mention a few of the headaches I've encountered. See my review on MS Vista for further details. Tech support has been trying to fix this problem for over two weeks now, and as of my last conversation with them, it will perhaps spill over into three weeks before they are able to make any determination of what went wrong. It's possible I will ultimately be forced to undergo a "full" or "clean" install of Vista, which also means reinstalling all of my software.
- Outlook 2007
     By A36H4VGKWYQIFW on 2007-06-23
Great program. Combined with Office Home and Student this has given me all the programs of Office Standard plus OneNote for over $200 less than Office Standard.
- Office 2007 Same as Old with a twist!
     By A1YD863HD3VIPU on 2007-03-08
Hi program is really great but so is Outlook 2003. The graphics have been changed and modernized like the other Office 2007 products. Compared to the 2003 release the graphics are sexier. I bought it only because of the Calendar function which is useful to a team we have at work. You can create multiple calendars and share them online with your team members and they are perpetually updated every time you "send and receive". The calendars also have the function of being overlayed over each other to see who is where; or free on any given day. This is the sole reason for the purchase; but if you don't need this function then don't spend your money.
- The new Outlook
     By A1L2BD2UQD6RUO on 2007-03-13
Still a very slow program, especially when it comes to downloading POP3 mail and synchronizing headers. Never understood why Outlook Express never had those problems - it was free and much, much faster program. Otherwise not that much different from previous version - mainly a new skin.
- Outlook 2007 stopped running after automated update
     By AUWA17X5G1KZ1 on 2007-03-16
For those considering Outlook 2007, beware of my experience: one morning I ran Outlook 2007 to find it would not download email messages at all. (I would get an error about MAPI.) This appears to be due to an automatic office update of the junk mail filter.
One of the most important features of an email program is that it doesn't suddenly stop being able to check email (imagine being on a business trip). Automatic improvements to the junk mail filter sounds great, but if that means one morning I wake up to not be able to check email at all, then the medicine is worse than the disease.
The new features and changes Outlook 2007 really do not compensate for the lack of reliability. If you have another email program that works, I'd stick with it and not switch to Outlook 2007.
On a positive note, I was able to fix the above problem by running repair (reinstall) from the Office 2007 install program, but this took half an hour or so to run.
- works well on windows xp
     By ADHMBJYDVOXDZ on 2007-09-26
I have tried it on windows vista where it was slow, I did a clean install of it on my windows xp system (meaning I did not import my old files into it) and it is swift and excellent. I then imported my most important folders like contacts, my mail folders with the most important information. I really love the new outlook it has a lot of nice new features. I didn't have to remove any features to make it work well as suggested on microsoft sites. I believe this is either a vista problem or a problem with people who import a large .pst file to start out with.
- Why Bother?
     By A1MTHGBTCLWTCD on 2007-11-17
It's you basic email program, it does absolutely nothing special, except cost a fortune. Try the free program Thunderbird, it is made by the same folks who make the web browser Firefox. Works very well and its free. Excellent interface
- Can't have Office w/o it...
     By ATXQ3B5XEG8HW on 2008-01-27
I don't care for the MSN Live stuff that is being pushed out there. Windows Mail, Calendar, & Contacts are not worth your valuable time in my opinion (more clicks = increased wasted time). Outlook puts all of it together into one convenient program (fewer clicks = reduced wasted time) and THAT's what I need and like. Every Office Suite ought to include Outlook. If yours doesn't, then the investment in this extra is required. In other words, Microsoft has found a way to bilk us for extra dollars and increase shareholder value; confound them.
Buy Microsoft Outlook if you must.
- Great way to stay organized!
     By A1QYFBUNNFV8D7 on 2007-07-23
This version of Outlook has lots of ways to keep you organized and is designed to be user friendly. I love having Outlook as opposed to using web based mail because it allows me to keep all the important stuff together in one place. With the ability to see your email, to do list, future calendar events, and tasks all on one screen it is easy to keep on top of a busy life and multi task.
- frustration
     By A2OA939S2K7JFS on 2007-08-23
I have used outlook for years because I like its potential. However, it is the hardest software to set up I have ever experienced. The is no live person or chat support to assist one in setting up e-mail. Neither Quest or Bresnan support Outlook. Why not? Your software is supposed to save me time and make me more productive. All it has so far done is take up my time and cost me money.
- This is a great product!
     By AT3F14PF375OR on 2008-01-18
Outlook 2007 will sync with Ipods and PDA's enabling one to utilize calandar and contact information, while you are on the move. It also enables you to keep track of daily events. This program works smoothly, no lock ups or problems.
I highly recommend this product.

- Best Outlook Version Yet
     By A8FB0W3YNUROJ on 2007-04-04
I purchased this program for my new Vista PC and I was quite pleased with the new and improved features, which integrates quite well on a Vista PC. As a previous owner of Outlook 2000 and Outlook 2002, I have become reliant on the program for both work and home. I elected to buy Outlook and Office Student and Home to maximize my dollar towards my Office purchase and I have no regrets. The Office Standard edition does not include One Note, which is one of those programs that integrates well with the new Outlook. In the end, I spent less and got more.
I would not recommend (nor do I intend) to upgrade my Office 2003 for my XP notebook. Likewise, I would not recommend purchasing Outlook without a complementary Office edition. If you have a new PC with Vista, it's a good idea to use Office 2007 in whatever fashion is most economical for your needs. If you don't use Office, there are tons of great e-mail programs that are available at no charge and an Outlook stand-alone purchase makes little sense. I think Thunderbird/Firefox is a sound choice for the non-Office user.
