Enjoy the Ridex$6.49

Sugarland, with the help of producer Byron Gallimore (Tim McGraw, Faith Hill, Lee Ann Womack), deliver the same ferocity on Enjoy The Ride. From the catchy coming-of-age kick-off single and chart-topping "Want To," to the reflective rocker "County Line" and the hopelessly optimistic "One Blue Sky," the combination of Jennifer's powerhouse country-soul voice with Kristian's passionate harmonies and deep-rooted musicality hits home, even if these two road veterans, each with a decade of club experience behind them, hardly ever see theirs. "If we can't go home, we do in our minds," Kristian explains of their songwriting process, which on this record, includes collaborations with country artist Bobby Pinson ("Want To"), Brad Paisley's co-writer Tim Owens ("Settlin'"), old pal Jeff Cohen ("April Showers") and Nashville local Lisa Carver ("One Blue Sky," "Everyday America," "County Line," "These Are The Days"). "There's a sense of nostalgia," Jennifer continues. "You pull from the time when you were figuring out who you are as a person. Like in 'Want To,' it's not only a story of falling in love, it's about that moment or a choice that could change your life. And with 'County Line,' it's about a place where you have your first kiss or get in a fight or talk about football and that time when you felt most free."

One of country's fastest-rising acts, Sugarland arrive at their follow-up to 2004's triple-platinum Twice the Speed of Life in a considerably altered state. Chief songwriter and founding member Kristen Hall is gone, and producer Garth Fundis (Trisha Yearwood) has been usurped in favor of crossover hitmaker Byron Gallimore (Tim McGraw, Faith Hill). One could argue that these are the predictable results of success--by opening for such megastars as Kenny Chesney and Brooks & Dunn, the Atlanta-based trio was forced to retool its organic, singer-songwriter, folk-rock sound to fill arenas. And while their intricate vocal harmonies added a subtle creative dimension to their debut, Enjoy the Ride is made up mostly of songs ("County Line," "Mean Girls") constructed to showcase lead singer Jennifer Nettles's big voice in ways the previous album did not. While the repertoire was written by Nettles and surviving partner Kristian Bush in collaboration with proven songsmiths Bobby Pinson, Lisa Carver, and Tim Owens, much of the wistful intimacy of the first album is now diminished. Furthermore, it seems foolish to now call this act a duo, as Bush receives very little time in the spotlight apart from his vocal harmonies and performance on guitar and mandolin. None of this should matter on the charts, however, since the real focus was always on Nettles, whose twangy, force-field soprano more than carries the day. As before, the lyrics are upbeat and positive--if the message of the first album was of flight and searching, the theme here is of digging in. The winsome Nettles does a fine job of selling it all, positioning herself as the Ambassador of Optimism, the Deep South successor to Jo Dee Messina. --Alanna Nash MPN: 000741102 - UPC: 602517051232

  • I Did Enjoy The Ride!

    By A2IMLVEQNPZCUS on 2006-11-11
The First time I heard "Baby Girl" I couldn't wait to hear it again, and that was how I felt when the first single "Want to" dropped from this new cd. However, there was plenty more of great songs where that came from and it's not always easy to Love songs on first listen but like "baby girl" this cd had plenty of them. "Settlin" and "Happy Endings" are two standouts as well. A wonderful 2nd ride with sugarland.

  • Country Nightmare

    By ABU13T846HH3H on 2006-11-14
Does Country Music get any worse than this? I don't see how because this album IS the worst of the worst. I am a huge country music fan and this album is disgraceful and shameful to country music. The long drawn out country accent sounds ridiculously fake, let alone awful. Kellie Pickler's accent on the flip side is authentic and sweet. Sugarland's rock n' roll mess should go under "heavy metal losers" not top of the list country. If you still insist on listening to this album than all I can say is Sweet Nightmares because that's what you're gonna have when you're through listening. SAVE YOUR MONEY and buy Kellie Pickler, Dolly Parton, Lynn Anderson, Carrie Underwood or other people who sing well.

  • Great from start to finish!

I found that I liked Sugarland's sophmore CD even better than their debut CD.

I bought their first CD when I heard the single "Believe". I love that song. I enjoyed the CD, but "Baby Girl" and "Something More" were both so overplayed on the radio, I found that the only other song I liked on the CD was "Believe".

Anyway...due to that, I wasn't exactly holding my breath for their next CD...until I heard the single "Want To". I went out and bought the CD and I love it!

I always have a little more respect for artists that write their own music, I connect more to it I guess. I think they did a heck of a job with their writing...especially after losing a key member of the group.

This CD just about has it all...county, rock, acoustic. It's got love songs, feel good songs, small town songs and sad ballads.

Go out and get this one. It's worth it.

  • Baby Girl is gone

    By AI59KV8ULTTL3 on 2006-12-02
Bring back the true genius behind Sugarland's debut - Kirsten Hall. Without her unique songwriting skills and backing vocals the band moves into the Kiddie Rides arena. Coupled with this mainstream producer, we have just another Trisha Yearwood or Faith Evens and the rest of the crooners taking up space in the "New Country" panopoly.

  • Another sweet spoonful!

    By AMT1ZGZ3YIIOK on 2006-11-21
Sugarland have been the underdog from the beginning. They were a band of songwriters formed in Atlanta that went to Nashville and got a record deal. That was a feat in itself. Then they came onto the scene and exploded like a pack of dynamite, selling three million copies of their debut album and watching their first four singles become monster top ten hits. That really got people's attention. People were captivated by Jennifer Nettles' powerhouse vocals and the band's bubbly, energetic sound and anthemic songs.

Although Jennifer and Kristian have experienced a bit of a setback with the departure of Kristin Hall earlier this year and had to throw this album together while on the road with Chesney and B&D this summer, neither has affected their sound. Jennifer's voice is as stunning as ever, and the productions are even better in the hands of the super talented Byron Gallimore. The new duo have the same knack for writing songs about the human condition that all people can relate to. "Everyday America" is a song about living in the moment and being proud of your small town roots. "Want To" is written from the perspective of a girl trying to enter into a relationship with a guy, but it's really about chasing your dreams and achieving your goals in life. "Happy Ending" talks about how we all look for the happy ending in whatever we do, from staying in the movie until the end to getting married or doing something that affects us all, like Dr. King and Neil Armstrong, who are referenced in the song. "Settlin'" is about finding your true love and not settling for anything less, which is what a lot of people are looking for. Another goody is "One Blue Sky", a song that was inspired by Hurricane Katrina about digging in your heels and staying in your hometown despite the conditions and praying for a clear day to clean up and go back to normal.

"How long til our dreams run dry?
    Don't know but we're stayin'
On our knees we raise our eyes
Holdin' on and prayin' to find
    One blue sky."

Sugarland shows that there ain't no sophomore jinx. With another collection of powerful songs and great melodies, it'll be sure to sweeten your collection. Enjoy this ride at twice the speed of life.

  • Horrible
    By A33BVA073BNC9J on 2006-11-26
I was anxiously awaiting the second album from Sugarland and was incredibly disappointed. Jennifer Nettles has the most amazing voice in the world. I used to think that I'd be willing to pay money to listen to her (and Sara Evans) read the phone book outloud. But wow!!!! This album is bad and Nettles badly needs to hire someone to teach her how to use that cannon of a voice. It is a shame to see her wasting it on poorly written songs and produced. Someone in their camp needs to lose their job.
Several of the songs sound exactly a like and are very uncharacteristic. Maybe if you listen to each song 5 or 10 times you might find them catchy or likeable but my hat is off to you if you can get through most of those songs more than once. And, you shouldnt have to listen to a song more than once or twice before you like it. Baby Girl off the first album and Want To off of this album are like that. You love them right from the start.
There are a few good songs on the album such as Want To, April Showers, and Stay. But the others are just a tragedy and no better than filler material.
Try the new Taylor Swift CD instead. You will like almost every song on there the first time through.

  • I enjoyed the last part of the ride
    By A1WVJ57YMUV8QU on 2006-12-02
The first part of the CD was so disappointing I almost didn't finish listing to it. From track 8 its really good. There are four really good songs on this cd that I listen to over and over, but I agree with another review, I miss the third band member. Their fist album was rockin and nearly got me a speeding ticket and had so much depth in the sound. Don't get me wrong, Jennifer has an amazing voice but its more solid sounding with the background vocals on the first album. The songs I like are April Showers, Sugarland, Stay, and Mean girls. Means girls cracked me up it was really funny, but not funny enough to carry the whole album. If your not asleep by track 8 you will enjoy the second part of the album.

  • Nettles is a Legend in the Making
    By A3Q0PZ3HSNVS6K on 2007-05-23
In today's cookie-cutter music industry that is full of over-produced and studio-pastuerized songs, it is vital to have a unique tone and style that makes you immediately-identifiable on the radio. At the core, I am a Rock musician, yet I appreciate a variety of music styles when performed and recorded well. Sugarland entered the scene as a "hip" Country act and knocked us (the audience) into a full-on smile! While they have been admirable and impacting as a group, it truly IS Jennifer's voice that is a huge selling point as a member of the band. When she sings, you immediately KNOW that it is HER! Many musicians just DREAM of having a instantly-recognizeable style that people will love! Miss Nettles is THERE! Furthermore, just about ANYTHING Country that she sings is gonna sound great because of her deep Southern accent and her unique vibrato and determined energy. How many OTHER Country artists have had a hit single with Jon Bon Jovi? It is hard to NOT like Jennifer Nettles, unless you don't like Country music AT ALL!! 'Nuff said!!!

  • Enjoy the Ride
    By A3BKE2HGTYH29Y on 2006-11-07
I had pre-ordered this great CD from iTunes, and it was available for download last night around 9:00, though I didn't download it until after the CMA's, and I didn't go to bed until I had listened to the entire thing. Not only does it show the talent of Jennifer Nettles and Kristian Bush as artists, but also as song writers.

This record seems to have a majority of upbeat songs, which is great. Every single song on this album has something good about it. "Everyday America" it really shows off Jennifer's vocal talent. "These Are the Days" is more of a duet with Jennifer and Kristian - he is a main vocalist in this song. "Want To", their first single is another upbeat song, and from the music to the vocals is just all around great.

If you're a Sugarland or country fan, this is a must buy for you.

  • It is sweet in Sugarland
    By A1QQNCJ80VY288 on 2006-11-07
I have now absorbed this fantastic album on this overwhelming day when Keith Urban's CD also came out. I became a real Sugarland fan with the first release and this one shows there is no sophmore jinx here, even with the departure of Kristen Hall. The single Want To is a powerful song and Jennifer delivers it with her amazing vocals. So far my favorite is These are the Days- I am a Bruce Springsteen and Bon Jovi fan as well as country fan and that song would easily fit either one of those artists in theme and musically. Mean Girls is just plain fun- I have two teenage girls and they will love that! Happy Ending is also a very powerful song. I was so happy to see the inclusion of Sugarland which I just had as most fans did on my Sugar in the Raw CD- thanks for including that one! Sugarland soars with inspiration songwriting, Jennifer's incredible vocals, and shear musicianship.

  • Enjoy The Ride
    By A3FRRQ80TNOP7O on 2006-12-04
This is a great album to add to your collection. Every song has so much meaning. The music is alone just draws you in. Then the vocals by Jennifer are amazing as usual. Even Kristian sings a little on one song. Their song writing abilites shines again and they prove on their sophmore release that they can indeed be a duo.

  • The Best!!!
    By A1SOR6PP7FNIHD on 2006-12-07
Sugarland really did a great job with this CD. I purchased this right when it came out and I haven't been able to stop listening to it. I feel that most of the songs I can relate to, like Settlin, Want to, Stay....all of them I can put some where in my life. I swear you will love this CD!! THis is a CD you must have in your collection! I promise you will love it!

  • Glad I bought this one
    By A9JAYHZOARJX8 on 2007-03-12
In listening to this next to the debut effort, I like the retooled Sugarland. Hats off to surviving the changes and coming out with a strong follow-up CD. Both have their strong and weak points, but they are great to listen to. I hear very positive messages in Enjoy The Ride - something I think we need today especially for young listeners. Glad I bought this one!

  • They've Done It Again!
    By A3GT8FW938Q40B on 2006-11-07
I bought this CD first thing this morning and I can tell you that it is every bit as wonderful as the first. Sugarland has a way of taking life that everyone experiences and turning it into a song that you fell like was written just for you. I highly recommend this CD.

  • Mean Girls Stink!
    By A25WE19YT8H5MK on 2006-11-07
Sugarland's sophomore album is beyond words. I didn't think it was possible, but I think they have surpassed the first album. Even if you aren't a die-hard Sugarland fan, you'll love this CD.

  • This Is One Ride I Truly Enjoy!
    By A19TGXUSP4JUQR on 2006-11-10
This is one review that I absolutely had to write. I've been awaiting Sugarland's follow-up effort for a while. When "Want To" came out on the radio I knew the second CD would be good. I just didn't know it would be this good.

This CD is better than their debut. Well written songs, powerful vocals and great music combine to make this CD well worth the money.

You also get several goodies on this album like a duet with Kristian on "These Are The Days", a quirky, cute song with lines you've gotta hear on "Mean Girls" and a near acapella of Jennifer on "Stay".

You know a CD is excellent when you have a very hard time picking a favorite song. I like them all so much! At this point, if I had to pick one, I think it would be "Happy Ending".

If you like the TWICE THE SPEED OF LIFE album, buy this one. You will ENJOY THE RIDE!

this albun has everthing you could want from a group's sophomore album. the songs on this album are great and they deserve a great deal of credit. having to put this record together on the road as fast as they could shows just what type of group they are.

  • More pseudo-country garbage for the masses
    By A3IOA9V5DL5SNM on 2006-11-13
Here we go again... right along with acts like Keith Urban, Sugarland continues the trend of convincing the hit buying public into thinking they are listening to country music when they are really listening to glorified generic pop songs with hokey country twang. And speaking of twang, while Jennifer Nettles certainly has a capable voice (for pop music that is) the obviously forced drawl in her voice just makes it come off as corny. While Sugarland might do it for many music fans, they certainly don't do it for this one.

  • Incredible Ride!
    By A3AHMT41HHQGVV on 2006-11-14
I was so anxious for this CD to come out and I'm glad to say I was not dissapointed at all. Went out and bought it the day it dropped & had it on at work all day. Just like their first CD, you can leave this on all day and not get tired of it. Every song is good, you don't have to skip tracks. Favorites so far are Want To and Settlin'. Jennifer Nettles' voice is beautiful, rich and deep. I just caught on to them recently and can't get enough! Buy this CD and Twice the Speed of Life which is worth it for one song - Just Might.

  • You won't want to get off this RIde!
    By A2BUELDPTWMB0I on 2006-11-29
I love this album by Sugarland. Jennifer Nettles is incredible. The first time I heard her in concert I marveled how so much rich sound could come from someone so petite. She has a voice as strong as a hurricane that can just blow you away and at times so soft and smooth she could tuck you in a bed of thorns without giving you a scratch. Its one of the few albums whose complete playlist is on my ipod

  • Never Thought It Would Top The Debut, But It Does
    By A1SJMTQ71JFET8 on 2007-03-18
Sugarland's debut album was a smash hit, and just when they started to take off, they lost their primary songwriter when Kristen Hall left the band. So how were they going to follow it up? Enjoy the Ride is a real progression for the now duo of Jennifer Nettles and Kristian Bush. Kristen Hall has a song-writing credit on the album, but as any Sugarland fan knows, that song--"Sugarland"--was written years ago and appeared on the group's little-known acoustic CD "In The Raw." Another track on Enjoy the Ride which was pulled out of mothballs is Jennifer's acoustic ballad, "Stay," which gives a glimpse into Jennifer's pre-Sugarland solo career. Every song, from the upbeat "Settlin'" to the bluegrassy "April Showers" to the self-reflective "These Are the Days" is a keeper. The only song on the CD about which I'm not crazy is "Mean Girls," because it is such a misfit song for them, but even that one's status as a keeper is saved since it features the greatest six-stringer in country music, Brad Paisley, playing some killer riffs. Overall, Enjoy the Ride is lively enough to engage some new fans to Sugarland without turning off the fans who were hooked by Twice the Speed of Life.

  • Sugarland No 2
    By A1ZCXNTORQPUF6 on 2007-04-28
"Sugarland"'s second album "Enjoy the Ride" consists of 11 tracks, most of which gradually almost blend into one music piece. This is one of the feelings it leaves on first hearing. It sounds like Sugarland No 2 is weaker than Sugarland No 1 Twice the Speed of Life. But things are not that bad when you listen to it again.

After their successful first album we'd expect the same joy of both upbeat and intimate music from the trio. But here comes just upbeat music from the duo. Fortunately, the lead singer is still there, her voice too, her energy and style of radiating positive energy with music seems to be there too. But practically gone are the soft, intimate, quieter notes and tunes. Maybe only in "Stay" there is something left of that side of "Sugarland"'s signature art.

They have two 'signatures' though. And the optimistic, filled with energy, loud, pushing signature is there in most of the tracks. You would especially like "Country Line", or "Want To" where the pushing is not overly-loud or overly-pushing, though they are still far from the appeal of several biggest hits of the group's first album. Some other tracks are just a continuous loud exhibition of Jennifer Nettles' vocal potential and instruments that can make the packed stadium dance and cheer, but might be just a tiny bit much for other occasions. Still, tracks like "Happy Ending", "April Showers", and "Sugarland" manage to balance between energizing and desire to sing along. This saves the album. And this CD is also great to listen to while riding a car in an open road (especially titles like "Settlin'"), which fully justifies the title of the whole album. You can still hear artistic attitude to voice and music in most of the album's material. And surely in some pieces you cannot but enjoy the rock-ish country sound ("One Blue Sky", "Mean Girls", and many others). Though "Mean Girls" is a bit over the top of the country/rock'n'roll boundary.

Fans and listeners would certainly like the album, maybe after the second or third go at it, when the time for listening to universally positive and loud music is right. But "Sugarland"'s producers should think hard to make the third album great on first hearing, not to leave the group in a big contemporary country music pool floating among numerous soundalikes. Hopefully, Sugarland No 3 leaves us without any doubt about the group's sure future in the charts and, most importantly, hearts of listeners.

  • Please stop your screaming!
    By A1Y03404FJ0H5L on 2008-02-17
Every song Jennifer Nettles sings is another example of trying to pass off screaming as music. It's painful to listen to that voice. I listened to this CD at a friends house and had to skip over each song because I was cringing within the first 30 seconds...as for Stay - good grief, after just hearing the intro, I'm running away as fast as I can!

  • Sugarland New cd
    By A194DUL8US2GJG on 2006-11-07
No matter what sugarland cd you listen to it will always be amazing, and this is nothing short of it. Evey song is great, it makes you want to get up and dance. I was not sure if I wanted to get the cd at first, but once I watched the CMAs last night I knew I had to have everyone of Sugarlands cds.

I would recomend this to anyone that love country!

Wow! Just had my first listen and love, love, love it. It's upbeat and Jennifer nails the vocals of course. Soooo good...it is sure to be a main stay in your cd player: )

  • Sugarland is Enjoying the Ride
    By on 2006-11-08
Having purchased the first album and being a Sugarland fan I knew that this would be a good album, but I wasn't expecting this. This album is absolutely amazing. Jennifer and Kristian have definately outdone themselves with this upbeat album. Every song on this album is lively and energetic. Jennifer vocals are amazingly beautiful and perfect. Any country fan would love this group and any Sugarland fan who is leerly of the fact that they are a duo needs to buy this album and see that they are going strong with just the two of them and they are definately enjoying the ride of life and music.

  • This is one great ride!
    By A148ZZRB82QLEM on 2006-11-14
The negative reviews here are way off. Not since the Dixie Chicks started have multiple genres been blended so effectively in country into a unique sound. Jennifer Nettles's voice is a real powerhouse, but she also knows how to tone it down and sound vulnerable on the ballads. There are also great message songs. Sugarland makes very high quality country that fortunately got popular.

  • Awesome!
    By AQELO1DJIAZ75 on 2006-11-22
I can't stop listening to their first CD and thought there is no way the first could be outdone but this sophomore album is a very close second. It is such a great one to listen to. I like it more and more each time I listen to it. I like songs numbered three, eight, ten, and beyond. All are fabulous, but these ones are my favorite. Definately buy, buy, buy!!!!
