The Neuros MPEG-4 Recorder 2 enables you to effortlessly capture video content for the Sony PSP from any analog video source, including cable or satellite television, DVD players, VCRs, camcorders, and PVRs such as Tivo. The video content is saved as MPEG-4 video files, eliminating the hassle of proprietary file formats. Using Memory Sticks and Compact Flash (CF) or Microdives as the storage medium, you can record content on a card for viewing on your PSP or TV, or then transfer onto your PC, Laptop, PDA, SmartPhone or Portable Media Player like the Neuros 442 or iPod. Roughly the size of a PDA device, the Neuros MPEG-4 Recorder 2 hooks up to your existing home-theater system, and allows you to view video and still photos on your TV or listen to MP3 audio files. Watch on an iPod too: Transfer the recorded file to your PC via a USB card reader (purchased separately) and add it to iTunes, then sync your iPod. Take it with you! Want to watch your favorite TV show or movies on your iPod video, PSP, or mobile phone without hassling with an online subscription service? Turn to the Neuros MPEG-4 Recorder 2 Plus, which works like a mini digital VCR but eliminates all fees, hassles, and file conversion. The Recorder 2 Plus--an enhanced version of the original Recorder 2--is easy to use, as it plugs into any existing home theater component via simple RCA cables. Once connected, it records from any analog video source, including cable or satellite TV, DVD players, camcorders, VCRs, and PVRs such as TiVo. And because the Recorder 2 Plus uses compact memory cards as the storage medium, you can play back the resulting video files on your TV or easily transfer them to the digital devices you already own, such as PSPs, iPod videos, laptops, PDAs, and SmartPhones.

The applications of the Recorder 2 Plus are virtually endless. You can watch your favorite late-night talk show or morning news show on your commute or during your lunch break, enjoy the movies of your choice during a cross-country flight, capture your video game highlights and e-mail them to friends or opponents, or digitize your home movies for viewing with friends. Everything is at your fingertips.

The quality of the recordings depends on the quality of the original content and signal, but the Neuros Recorder 2 Plus captures its footage at 30 frames per second with a 640 x 480 resolution (close to DVD quality). Users can then save the content via one of several resolution/compression options. The resolution methods include VGA for TV playback; WQGVA for the PSP; QVGA (15 and 30 frames per second) and QVGA 3GP for handhelds such as the PSP, iPod, SmartPhones, PDAs, and Pocket PCs; and QCIF and QCIF 3GP for mobile phones. The compression options, meanwhile, consist of superfine, fine, normal, and economy. Note that the superfine and fine settings are only available for the VGA resolution.

Operating the Neuros requires almost no learning curve, as the device uses your TV screen for all the menu controls. With its credit-card-sized remote, it's a cinch to move through the menus and select the handheld device you want to use for viewing. Simply choose the iPod or PSP, for example, and the Recorder 2 Plus encodes the recording into the proper format, so you don't have to worry about details like frame rates, bit rates, or codec types. The device even offers programmable and timer recording functions, just like a traditional VCR.

The Recorder 2 Plus records onto the following memory cards: Secure Digital (SD), MiniSD, MicroSD (Transflash), MultiMediaCard (MMC), Compact Flash (CF) type I and II, Memory Stick Pro, Duo and Pro Duo, and Microdrive. Other details include a JPEG photo viewer with a slide-show option, a one-click record feature from the remote, and upgradeable firmware. The Recorder 2 Plus measures 4.6 by 0.71 by 3.42 inches (W x H x D) and is backed by a 90-day warranty on labor and a one-year warranty on parts.

  • Works Great! Perfect for Ipod and Treo

Originally picked up a V-Mate from Sandisk, but the Neuros outperforms in terms of features and video quality.

The recorder works just fine, but I found the manual not as clear about some of the operations as I would have liked. It took me over an hour to figure out how to complete some of the operations, and I've been working with electronic products for over 30 years. That's why I gave it 4 stars instead of 5. I use this recorder with my home survellience system, as I have 2 cameras monitoring my home when I am gone. I have to use it in the 640 resolution because my monitor is a TV set, and in this highest resolution it will only record for 5 hours. But that's better than the 2 hours I was getting when recording to my DVD recorder.

  • WORKS WELL FOR WHAT IT IS.

I just bought this product and wanted to post a little review after my first initial recordings and a little time spent on the Neuros Technology forums. Here are some of the pros and cons I came up with about this recorder:

Pros: The movie I recorded using the Recorder 2 showed up immediately on my PSP. No extra conversion to deal with. I was also able to use it to put a movie on the my friends Zune although it took the Zune's software about three hours to complete that task. Of course, I was able to import the movie into my iTunes library and sync to my iPod which took about 3 minutes!

Cons: The on-screen display is circa 1997! Would be nice to see it updated. Also the recorder cannot be operated without the remote! No buttons on the neuros at all. Be aware that although you can record for as long as your memory card has space, it will create a new file after two hours. That's right, DVD movies over two hours long will result multiple files! I was able to splice the two together using video editing software but who wants to go through that! The last thing is that the quality is slightly under what I would have expected but I think it may be the quality of the RCA cables it came with. I think I will take a suggestion from a neuros forum member and buy Monster Gold camcorder cables and see what happens.

Overall, it works for what I bought it for which is to expand movie selections for the PSP. If it works with Zune (can't really be sure yet), great! It definately works with my iPod and Smartphone. I can't complain about that because so far so good there.

I give four stars for the cluncky interface which is difficult to navigate and may be impossible for a novice!

  • My best investment

Works great!!!!!! Is so easy to use and install. Now I'm watching all my favorite programs on my spare time.No more hassle of converting files just put the sd card record and watch it on my PDA.

  • Works perfectly!

At last a product that works as advertised. I record my tivo'd shows to my memorystick, pop it into my Psp and take it with me wherever I go. I watch my favorite shows on the crosstrainer at the gym, on my lunch, or while waiting for an appointment. It even makes taking my wife shopping painless. I can record from Dvd, Tivo, cable, vcr, etc.. On the lowest quality recording I fit four hours of recording per gigabyte on my memorystick. The video quality when played back on my Psp is outstanding, even on lowest setting. My only warning is, do not lose the little remote that comes with the unit. There is no other way to operate the device.

This product generally did what I purchased it to do, mainly record video from several sources, DVR and digital video camera and allow me to play them on my ipod. The recorded quality was very good and I was able to view my videos on both my ipod and smartphone. My only complaint is with the build quality. Both the cable connections for the video and the power supply shorted in and out when wiggled even slightly. Had this not been a problem I would have rated it with 4 or 5 stars.

I brought it so I could record TV shows on a sd card and watch on my palm. However I have not learn to work it yet? I don't want to give it a bad rating, however I'm pretty good with equipment but haven't been able to work this device yet?

  • NO SD CARD READER
    By A1EF44C55H9XY9 on 2008-01-22
This seems like a great idea... in fact so great I ordered it from Amazon based on the info provided in the description. After waiting two weeks to get it I opened it up to find out that it does not read SD cards at all, only Compact Flash and Sony duo. So no I have to send it back... Bummer.

  • love the neuros recorder 2 plus
    By AK3EGYCPJ7I9T on 2008-05-04
i did some research before i bought this ,and i just love the neuros . i recorded some of my bands videos from a dvd on to a compact flash card ,then i put the flash card into my card reader and into the usb on my computer, then i saved the files and uploaded them onto you tube, they came out great. my computer doesn't have a dvd player or a memory card slot.it an old dell. then i just got a sony psp . so i wanted to put some videos on that. my sony memory stick duo pro didnt come with a adapter , you will need that for the neuros , the adapter usually comes with the memory stick when you buy it. so i ran my dvd player into the neuros ,with the memory stick in the neuros and recorded on to it. i put it in the psp and it worked perfectly. great videos. make sure that you format the memory stick in the psp before you record on it.there are instructions in the sony psp manual on formatting the memory stick.

  • Very geek oriented, but more or less does the job

The good news is that if you want to make copies of video suitable for an iPod or other small screen device, you can do it as long as the video source has a single analog out for video and one or two outs for audio.

The bad news is that the manual is opaque and you have to be very geeky to understand how to set this thing up. The video interface is something out of PacMan circa 1978. This device is not for the non-technically inclined.

The other bad news is that even at the highest resolution, the video quality is marginally suitable for TV watching. It's OK for watching on a small device like an iPod, but even when you modestly blow up the image to something like 26", you can see just how splotchy the blacks are and how grainy the image is. It's like watching a mediocre VHS tape.

This device will not be particularly good for archiving old DVDs or even VHS tapes because of the image degradation. The company suggests a different device for archiving, their OSD. That device has an extra video in, S-Video, in so it might be a little better. But if you are using RCA jacks on that device, I'm guessing you'll have the same problem as you'll have with this device in terms of poor archival video.

The bottom line is that this device is a pretty good one trick pony if you're technically inclined. And that one trick is that it can record low quality mpeg4 video suitable for an iPod or PSP onto an SD card.
