Zero interference as advertised per Consumer Reports By AV8KNRN0F8MGT on 2006-10-23
Consumer Reports just ran an online article on the Philips SCD 589 Baby Monitor, putting it through an "extreme" test, and it delivered with zero interference as promised. The highlights:
"We devised a worst-case scenario to test the SCD 589, placing three models within 20 feet of two new Philips 1.9-GHz DECT cordless phones to see if they would interfere with each other... The SCD 589 lived up to its claim of being free of interference, even in our extreme test. There was no interference heard on any of the phones or baby monitors in our test... The SCD 589 also had some nice, if hardly essential, features the other models in our tests didn't. Those included a nightlight; an "intercom" that allows the parent to speak to the child remotely; and an alarm that sounds when the temperature in the child's room goes out of a certain range that parents can set."
Crystal clear transmission and pure silence otherwise By A2I5YICA9V5QEG on 2006-12-05
We recently moved our daughter to her big-girl room, which is quite far away from our bedroom. We keep doors closed at night so as not to disturb her, so we need a monitor that we could keep on all night at our bedside in case she wakes up or cries for help.
Performance
The Philips SCD 589 works perfectly as advertised. With the sensitivity set to normal (3 of 5 bars), the receiver always come alive virtually instantly and transmits every noise in her room clearly without any popping/cracking sounds. But as soon as the room is quiet, the receiver mutes to complete silence without even a hum or buzz. We have tried a number of other monitors and none have come close audio-wise. We leave the receiver on overnight at the nightstand and you'd forget it's there unless sound is transmitted.
Features
The UI is simple and intuitive, while the physical design is elegant and tasteful. For example, soft amber signal lights, rather than giant red glow (you know the brand), are used to indicate sound transmission. The receiver is small enough to fit in your pocket to help you look less like paranoid parents. The two-way communication feature could come in handy with spouse or older children. We are not using the lullaby/nightlight feature much, but that maybe useful for younger babies. And the remote temperature display is a rare advantage over the competition that further sets this product apart. The docking/charging simplifies daily operation significantly. The receiver uses 2 AAA rechargable Ni-MH and could be replaced with standard AAA's in the event they run out. From the small dimensions to industrial design to build quality, the product is top-notch.
Summary
The SCD 589 performs outstandingly. And with the thoughtful and well-implemented feature set, this product truely shines as one designed by those who understand parenting challenges. If they could somehow squeeze in video transmission (I realize DECT is only spec'ed for audio transmission) this product would put all other baby monitors to rest.
I highly recommend this product to anyone with, but not limiting to, child-monitoring needs (even for older children -- see 2-way feature).
Note
We used to use the MobiCam video monitor, which worked well for seeing what the baby is doing. However, the audio was interference-ridden due to the sheer number of 2.4GHz devices in our house. With the SCD 589, we now keep the MobiCam turned off until we hear something that needs verifying visually.
Worth the cost By A1IDU8W9XV66R5 on 2006-12-11
We had an 8-yr-old baby monitor that had an intercom feature we had come to consider essential. But the unit we had from our 1st baby had a broken button on the receiver and buzzed like crazy all the time so we wanted to replace it. This was the only monitor that was 900mhz (didn't want to interfere w/our 2.4 wireless network in the house, & more powerful signal is a bit scary to put by your heads as you sleep & overkill to boot) & also had an intercom feature. We have 3 children, 1 baby still in our room with us & 2 in their room down the hall. This is both highly sensitive to the slightest noise from their rm. and completely silent when there isn't any sound to broadcast. The remote features e.g. turning on lights or lullabies for the baby/child's room are neat & nice, the adjustable sensitivity is great- really will respond to the slightest sound if you have it at a lower sensitivity, or can be set to broadcast constantly & will do so w/o extra noise. The intercom is nice for letting a child know you're coming, or asking if they need you at all, or of course, playing around. Battery life has been fine but we hardly use the receiver out of the charger. Completely fulfills its claims.
Crystal clear audio! The audiophile's baby monitor! By A3A3FL72P6QD2C on 2006-12-27
I was a little apprehensive about the price tag, but this thing really does work as described. It is well worth the $200 bucks. We had a cheap FisherPrice baby monitor that was unusable because of the static. This one is completely quiet unless the baby is making noise, and then it is crystal clear with no background hiss or static. You can adjust the microphone sensitivity, but the default setting was perfect for us, and allows you to hear small sounds clearly. I also like the room temperature monitoring function.
Useless as a baby monitor By A36JNDJOQMZZVD on 2007-09-23
This monitor has a serious flaw. Initially, we were using an inexpensive Fisher-Price monitor. The monitor picked up cars going by, sirens, etc and we thought that was too much. But, we heard everything that went on in the crib. If the baby gurgled, we could hear it. We knew when the baby was getting ready to wake up by the rustling. Then we got the Phillips monitor. First off, $200 is robbery. But I paid it. New parent and all. THe monitor has whats called a "gate": it doesn't transmit to the receiver until a certain threshhold is reached. What is that threshold? Its your baby wailing. Sure its silent, and sure it didn't interfere with my wireless internet router but neither does the cheapo monitor I use and that silence is a bit unnerving. You can tell whats going on with your baby by hearing its sounds. The lullabies? Cheap dinky sounds like on cheap toys. The lights? useless. The thermometer? Mounted underneath so that you get a reading of the shelf. Parents, use the cheapo monitors and spend the money on something that will actually benefit your child. This is a waste of your time. I returned it after two days. Its much nicer to anticipate your baby waking than to hear it in full distress, wailing away, while you run up the stairs to find tears streaming down its cute little face.
- nice, but...

Here are some things I like and dislike about this Philips Digital SCD 589 monitor.
PROS:
1. I love the look and functionality. It charges easily into the holder, and it's very easy to figure out. Very user friendly, but you do have to read the directions. It comes with a lanyard or a belt clip, and it's very lightweight.
2. It has more bells and whistles than you'll ever need. It has a baby's room temperature monitor (and you can set the range--it'll alert you if it's not within the range you specified), a soft glow nightlight, you can speak into it to talk to the baby, and you can make it play a lullaby; all from the parent unit.
3. It's got ZERO interference. Period.
4. It's got the longest range of baby monitor I've ever owned.
CONS:
1. It's incredibly expensive for a baby monitor.
2. The range is not 900 feet as described. With trees and walls (other houses, etc), it's probably more like 450 feet.
3. Even with the sensitivity and the volume all the way up, it's very quiet. Sometimes I like to hear the baby breathing, and it doesn't pick that up, unless the baby unit is right on top of him. Of course, when he's screaming, it's loud and you can't miss it.
4. This is small, but every time I control the volume up or down on the parent unit, I hit the "talk" button that you can talk to the baby with, and I'm afraid I'll make more noise and wake him up...
5. I've never used the bells and whistles.
So, good luck deciding on a monitor. I really do like it, but can't give it 5 stars because I don't think it's perfect.
- Ludicrously expensive but worth it - the Cadillac of Baby Monitors
     By A2ZPXNWPFX3WYJ on 2007-10-04
We bought this to replace the Graco iMonitor (see my review for why we didn't like that one). I wanted a digital monitor to avoid interference with all our wireless gadgets and neighbors baby monitors...plus I didn't like the idea of someone being potentially able to hear *my* baby on the monitor!
All told if you are a light sleeper and don't want to hear static, beeping, and extraneous noise - just when your baby needs you! - this is the perfect monitor.
Pros:
- Zero interference or static in two months' use
- Never lost signal
- Adjustable sensitivity. The monitor ONLY broadcasts when the baby makes noise! It can detect things like the A/C and even the mobile music and recognize them as background noise and not broadcast them. (If you are paranoid and want to hear all sounds from the room, just set the sensitivity to maximum and it will broadcast constantly).
- If it does lose the signal (I had to turn off the base to test this) it doesn't start beeping right away. It tries to reconnect for about 30 seconds, and then beeps if unable. (The iMonitor started beeping immediately which was not really helpful in the middle of the night. I can cope without hearing my baby for 30 seconds.)
-Temperature monitoring and alert
-Lullaby - we don't use this much but it is nice to be able to turn it on remotely if the baby wakes up unexpectedly - it has helped settle him a couple times
- Uses regular AAA rechargable batteries. You can put regular batteries in it too - just do something to remind yourself NOT to put it in the charger if you do that!
Cons:
These are not so much reasons not to buy as things that were either pointless or should be better designed on a $200 monitor
- The charger is a little temperamental. I thought we had battery problems or a bum charger at first, but what happens is it's possible to put the unit in the charger, have the charger light illuminate, but the unit is not charging. Always look to see if the battery icon is inidcating charging to ensure it's properly seated in the charger. I supspect this is the problem some other reviewers had.
- Base and monitor should have pads to prevent sliding
- The "starry night" night light is just lame. I was expecting it to make little stars on the ceiling, but basically the base just glows.
- Separate attachments for neck strap and belt clip. Seriously, who can keep track of these? We just took the neck strap off and looped it around the belt clip so we can use either/or
- Volume is a little lower than on most monitors. This is fine by me - Level 2 will wake me up - but hubby needs to set it on MAX.
- Battery life is kinda short - much worse if you turn up the sensitivity. It would be nice to be able to get a separate charging base. If this is a concern and you can do without the temperature & lullaby features, get the model with two parent units. On the other hand the fact that it uses regular AAA batteries means you can always have a spare set in a regular charger.
- Practically no volume, no battery life!
     By A1RT8FIBY1OYVV on 2008-01-07
While I still use this monitor, I only use it as a supplement to my video and cheap Greco monitor. When I first got it, I returned it because you couldn't hear anything, not even the baby crying!! The second one works better, you can hear him crying if there is NO other noise in the room. This is the the highest sensitivity. I kept it because our house has a problem regulating temperature in the rooms, so I liked the fact that I can monitor the temperature in his room at all times. Otherwise, it's not worth the $200.
Also, the battery life is a joke. It maybe lasts 4 hours, MAX, off of the cradle. I don't really ever take it off the cradle anymore, and just use our cheap $35 graco monitor when I'm walking around the house. That monitor will last days with the batteries without having to replace them, while the Philips is basically useless unless on the cradle. (It takes a LONG time to recharge). Honestly, what's the use of a monitor if you can't take it around the house with you?
- Phillip Baby Monitor
     By A3NHMH9WAX9PTX on 2006-12-29
5 Stars and worth the cost. Crystal clear quality. You do not even know that it is on because it does not produce any backgound noise. We purchased a Fisher Price model that was inexpensive and it picked-up all kinds of interference from portable phones, the neighbors baby monitor, low frequency radio stations, and more. We thought all monitors were the same. This product is far superior and worth the money! New Mom with a 6 month old who doesn't sleep thru the night. LW
- A fantastic and reliable monitor. The others can't compare!
     By A2JWON0TWLUOGJ on 2007-01-27
Several of our friends have Fisher Price monitors and other similar brands. Those other monitors were constantly recieving interference and broadcasting static. We heard of the Philips with DECT technology and read some great reviews. Let me say that the Philips with DECT is in a class all its own, along with the price. The monitor is outstanding and worth the 200 dollar price. This monitor, unlike other cheap monitors, is able to lock and keep one of 60 available channels. The technology is amazing! My wife and I have premie twins and keep a very close eye and ear on them. We are able to use the monitor and hear them even while in the shower, out infront of the house, or back by the pool! We can activate the nightlight, play lullabys, and adjust sensitivity all from the remote. The monitor even tells room temp and alarms if it gets too cold or hot! Take my advice and don't spend less money on the other analog/radio type monitors, the Philips is the one and only truly digital, interference free monitor available! Be sure to take the time to properly charge the included rechargable batteries and read the manual. Enjoy...HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!
- Defective Product
     By A1KO4WPKCMPBTI on 2007-08-10
Ordered the first one. Cradle did not charge. Returned. Ordered replacement. Cradle did not charge again. Returned and Ordered a third one. Amazon won't send me a third one because they think there most be a wider manufacturing problem. I see they are still selling it though. Other reviewers report similar problems with charging.
- Charging problems...Like many other reviews here.
     By A37ZQL6QQG6JZR on 2007-08-21
********BUYER BEWARE********Charger basically fries the rechargeable batteries, rendering them useless in a day or two. Been through three sets of after market Duracell rechargeables at this point, since it fried the batteries that come with the unit. As far as I am concerned Phillips owes me my $199 plus the cost of batteries I have had to buy. Many others have reported this same problem so read all reviews carefully and notice the trend here, and BUY AT YOUR OWN RISK. Personally, I would recommend staying away from this monitor as it seems Philips has not worked out the problems with it yet. I will most certainly be returning mine, and won't even consider looking back on this purchase. Been a nightmare for a couple with a newborn child.
Lastly, in regards to the other features. The night light feature is absolutely and totally useless. It would not light up a doll house, never mind an entire bedroom. Doesn't even provide the slighest hue of light in the darkest of rooms. None at all, totally useless.
I will sum up by saying very simply, the concept of this monitor is superb, and when it works it is clear and sensitive. But chances are it won't work for you, and you will have battery/charger problems. Save the headache until Philips actually hires better people to beta-test their products before they are released to consumers. This one is an embarrassment to those involved in it's development. *********BUYER BEWARE***********
- can't hear it -- bad product
     By A3ZGDVUJ3SV2I on 2007-10-14
We bought this because of the interference in our neighborhood and our neighbors sometimes heard our baby instead of theirs, but we returned it because if you are 8 feet away from the monitor you will lucky to hear your baby cry. Also, you don't even hear that until your baby is in full cry mode, so why even have the monitor!
The other features -- temperature monitoring, auto-off from the receiver, and 2 way speaking are great, but what's the point if the main function is defective?
- Worth the money
     By A3VE5K5D1QR4HI on 2007-01-19
This monitor is definitely worth the money. We have been using it with our newborn for about a month now and love the results. There is no static interference so you can hear your baby crystal clear. We also have digital cordless phones and wireless internet that do not interfere with the signal at all. Synching the base with the peripheral monitors is simple and explained well in the manual. Range has not been an issue as we can be anywhere in our 4 level loft as well as outside with no signal interruptions. Have not used the nighlight or lullabyes yet but am excited to try them out. Overall I have nothing negative to say about this monitor at all.
- You Get What You Pay For...
     By A1WCZZGI2T0RRU on 2007-03-21
Does exactly as promised. During my research, I found that many of the lower/mid priced baby monitors from other companies would "possibly" interfere with wireless home networks and wireless phones. We have a 2.4Ghz wireless router, 5.4 Ghz wireless phones, 900 Mhz wireless headphones, cell phones, etc. and there is ABSOLUTELY ZERO interference as promised. I haven't tested the range as the babies room is right around the corner (less than 25 feet) so I can't tell you how far it works. I'm fairly good with all types of new technologies and it may take the average user a little time to get used to all the bells and whistles. Only drawback is the price ($200.00), however, if you have a wireless network or don't want to pick up other people's phone calls, this is the ONLY unit on the block that guarantees no interference (as of 3/20/2007). One of the main reasons we spent the extra $ for this Philips baby monitor is because of a horror story we heard from a friend of ours who picked up a conversation of a neighbor talking about her and her child on their baby monitor. If privacy is a big factor in your consideration and willing to shell out the additional clams, this is the unit to buy. Being a first time parent, I've been told that baby monitors are used for many years as your child grows...you can easily justify the cost over several years.
- Good product, be aware of radiation.
     By A1TJLEHWYRJ1VZ on 2007-03-24
This product works great, but that comes at a price of potential health risks. The level of EMF/EMR radiation coming from this phone on DECT sinal levels is substantial.
Potential health effects can occur. I wouldn't recommend it for this reason alone. This is like putting a high powered mobile phone mast next to your babies body.
- craddle did not charge
     By A7OZQZIB9W0PC on 2007-06-28
bought - returned bought - returned
both units had craddles that did not charge unit.
- The only one we tried that did what it said
     By A150I4BN3XWH1C on 2007-11-03
We tried many others but this was the only one that truly performed as advertised.
My sister talked to a friend who had a house where the master suite was on the other side of the house from the children't rooms and recommended this unit.
Sound quality is excellent, NO STATIC
Sensitivity is excellent - we could hear breathing
You can control the monitor from the portable monitor. You don't have to enter the children's room
The portable monitor is a godsend. We have a rambling ranch house and most of the other units could not get half way through the house. This one did get through most of the house and was clear
Being able to talk to the other end on it's speaker is also a great feature
I'ts expensive but if you truly want a monitor that works this is the one.
- No battery life, volume needs to be higher.
     By A3J0WDBEQK77LM on 2008-04-13
Although there is no interference at all, I would not buy this product again. It is not worth the price as the battery life is about 2 hours and it needs to stay on the stand charging to use it at all. The volume on this is way too low and there isn't anything you can do about it.
- Great monitor!
     By AK4FCXQCAU9VI on 2007-01-25
We're new parents and for the first 3 months had a conventional "noisy" monitor. When we got this one, the first few nights we could not get used to the "silence" in our bedroom. We love the fact that it automatically links itself in any available channel. The only thing is that the rechargable batteries that came with the monitor (for the parent unit) are not working properly: Even though we charged them like it explains in the instructions, every time we take the parent unit out of the base, the batteries die before the 8 hours it promises. We will buy new batteries, but appart from this, we think this is a GREAT monitor.
- THIS PRODUCT IS AWESOME!!!!!!!! LOVE THE MONITOR!!
     By A39JKJ5YRR582T on 2007-02-07
We have a VERY large home (10,000 sq ft plus on 3/4 levels) and we have a VERY advanced audio visual system with Cat 5 lines and multiple wireless outlets. Well, we had gone through 5 wireless monitors and NONE of them worked. So we spent over $10K hard wiring our nursery to watch our baby through our televisions. Yet, we had to be in front of a TV to listen or see her -- this left us immobilized. This product produced ZERO interference and picks up no background noise. You WILL NOT be sorry! One of the best products we own.
- Wow... this really works!
     By A13ML5W7NK1M7O on 2007-02-12
I have had 3 types of monitors and this is by far the best!! I have a 22 month old and 6 month old twins and before I got this monitor, we had a terrible time with reception and interference. The monitors interfered with each other as well as with appliances nearby. We figured we would give this a try and boy, it really works!
The first night we had this monitor, I went in to check on the girls and make sure it was working 3 times because it was sooooo quiet. We even have a white noise maker in thier room and the monitor doesn't pick that up, it only broadcasts when one of the girls actually makes a noise. So, we finally have some peace from the relentless humming, beeping, and cracking of our monitors. We may just buy a 2nd one for my son's room.
As for the features, the intercom has been wonderful as well as the temperature guage but we don't use the lullabies or the light.
Fantastic product and is the first baby monitor to actually deliver what it promised.
- not loud enough
     By A1JVFQERJ0G36F on 2007-03-12
We bought this item because of all the great reviews. The good news is that it eliminates all the white noise and static that we hated. I also love the two way walkie talkie feature. The bad news is that it reduces the volume so I can't hear my two year old daughter when she calls me after waking up from her nap. We have the volume control and sensitivity set on maximum. I would not be confident using this for a new born.
- very expensive but does work well
     By A13TW5KDDVLOT7 on 2007-05-04
purchased this monitor prior to my son's birth, he's now 10 weeks old. all positive with a couple exceptions. the batteries on the parent unit don't last as long as i would like. (my previous monitor with my first child was a sony and it went longer off the charger) i like the display (although the display only lights when you push the power button for a second) it is not continually lit. i like the size of the parent unit, very small. it would be nice to have a second charger base. one to keep downstairs and one in the bedroom so that if the charge runs out while downstairs you could recharge there. (the sony had a rechargable plug not a dock, so that was more friendly to carry back and forth upstairs) i thought the temperature feature was kind of silly, but i've actually used it quite a lot because my sons bedroom is the coolest room upstairs and we've been having problems with our heating system. there is NO STATIC sounds whatsoever (although that was the case with the sony too) was it worth so much more money, we paid around $99 for the sony. we did have the antenna damaged on that and had to purchase a second set, so i guess we spent $200 on the sony unit. i've been happy with it, but agree that it is expensive.
- Don't buy this monitor
     By A1K5IJPSDGWB23 on 2007-07-05
At first we loved this baby monitor. The sensitivitly was great, the parental monitor size small and easy to carry around, and there was no interference. Then we started having problems with the charger bases. They didn't charge on contact. We'd have to wiggle it to get the red charger light to go on. It was hit or miss. Then one of the parental units died. We opened the unit and found the batteries had melted. I read on these reviews that you're only supposed to use rechargeable batteries. Either we're idiots or it it wasn't clear that the units could'nt sustain regular batteries. But even when they had the rechargeable batteries in them one unit had no off the charger life. And even if we had used reusable batteries both base connections stopped working. For $200 we should all expect more.
- Charging Issue....
     By A11PKWFMGKJT1B on 2008-07-30
i think there is a known issue with this product. I thought that maybe only a person or two may have a unit that's not fully functioning but mine is also having that "not charging" issue. I charged mine as per the manual's specified time and the portable unit died in less than 5mins. I've tried 3 or 4 times since then, each time doing the 16hrs charge time without luck. I would like to return the product but i have since shipped it out of the country. I called Philips and they told me that the warranty is void once it leaves the country. huh?! anyway, they will still help me but now i would need to ship the whole unit to them since they are a pair....which is going to cost a whole lot since I'm halfway across the world. watch out when buying this baby monitor. it seems like a good quality monitor and the sound is clear, however you run the risk of getting a non-functioning one. btw, i went and charge the batteries in a sony charger and the system worked but that would mean removing the battery each time since it would only last around 9 hrs each charge. i wish i can just fix whatever it is they screwed up when they were manufacturing this. obviously there is an issue 'coz i'm not the only one. read the other reviews out there and you'll find out. you've been warned.
- great baby monitor
     By AUHTIHOVXPNCU on 2007-02-07
This is an excellent monitor. We bought it to replace a different monitor that we had (a Sony)which did this horrible beeping noise every few seconds. I guess whoever designed it thought there should be an alert at the slightest interference, but how annoying! We love the Philips monitor. It is quiet (only makes noise when your baby makes noise). For instance, we run an air cleaner in our daughter's room to provide white noise so that she won't wake up when our other kids are noisy. This monitor is silent until our daughter starts crying, or babbling. Also, it has a neat feature -- you can use it as an intercom. If my husband is downstairs and I am in the baby's room, I can talk to him through the monitor, and he can respond to me by pushing a button and talking into the parent unit. The range seems to be excellent -- we have a large house and it works well from our upper floor down to the basement. I would definitely recommend this product. The only negative is the price -- very expensive!
- Great product, high price.
     By A2VCNJD474RL1B on 2007-02-14
Great product, pros are that everything is as advertised with an exception of the battery life ( lasts only a few hours, and takes all day to charge ). The menu's are not user friendly. Talk back feature is most used, not to talk to the baby , but for my wife to bug me to get her some juice when i'm working haha. Searched the internet for a better price than $199 but couldnt find one for any cheaper. I held out until i found it for $175 from another website and decided to go for it. $199 is a bit steep. If only they used a battery pack instead of cheap rechargable batteries. either way no regrets.
- Best baby monitor yet...
     By A17QX6Y51S34WI on 2007-03-09
I'll admit- I am a TOTAL baby stuff geek. I research it all, and am VERY tough to please. We originally bought the now discontinued Phillips 900mhz monitor, and it was wonderful (2 years ago). We've used the Fisher Price units at friends, and for the money, they are really decent. However, we added a video monitor system for our children in our home, and the interference between our old Philips and the video system was unbearable. Made the audio monitor useless.
So we bought this unit- the Philips SCD 589. It is PERFECT. Rechargeable batteries, 2xAAA, and VERY small- easily fits in a pocket. The range is great, and b/c it digitally scans 60 channels and switches channels whenever it senses interference, it works in our "noisy" environment as if it was the only electronic device in the world. That is the main reason we bought it, and it delivers. It does not suffer from interferance- period. Philips is first to market with this technology, and it costs a definite premium. BUT IT WORKS. WHen you run the monitor at night, you need it quiet with no hiss or hum so YOU can sleep. This one delivers. I'd recommend this hands down as the best monitor out there- but you pay for it. All of the bells and whistles are nice (temperature, temp hi or low monitor, etc.) but the fact that it is quiet is what sells it. It is the best out there today.

We bought the most expensive (non-TV) baby monitor at our local "r us" store. It cracked and popped constantly - drove my husband nuts. We decided that the price was worth it and bought the Phillips. We LOVE this monitor and cannot recommend it highly enough. We love the "walkie-talkie" feature so that if my husband can't find something in the nusery - I can respond without having to get up and go find it for him. Nothing at "r us" even compares - we are very happy!!
