only certain locations By A1PT3E08Q0QPKQ on 2007-08-02
I had intended to use the boombox at work. I originially did not know about the need for the indoor/outdoor antenna, which of course makes sense in order to receive a satelite signal, but there is NO physical way for me to get the anntenna outside and I don't have a window in my office. I even tried the boombox at home with the antenna on the windowsill, and I still couldn't get a signal. So disappointed! The boombox is a great design, light weight, and great sound (when I could get a signal for 2 sec.), but unless you have just the right place to put it or are able to put the antenna outside, you may have limited signal capability. So sad! I love my satelite radio!
Nice to have, but... By A3LGKNW6XRP8IH on 2006-12-29
...it is just a box with an on and off switch and volume control. There is no ability to adjust the bass/treble/etc. And I think it's a little too bass.
It's a nice looking unit and I enjoy having Sirius radio in the house. It has a jack, so you can plug your iPod or computer into it to listen to another source.
You won't be sorry!!! By A1B8ASAGJ2GMOV on 2007-01-09
This product is excellent. Has great sound. Would highly recommend this to anyone!
simple boombox with universal docking station By A18CP0QDJ36X4N on 2007-10-26
I've been using Sirius for almost two years. I recently upgraded to the Sporster 5 from the Sportster 1 (unit went bad, no antenna pick up). I had the home dock and boombox for the Sportster 1.
The boombox is very simple. Basic plug and play. Has two 4" woofer for mid and high-low range, two tweeters, and 1 5 1/5" downward firing woofer for a sub. The port for the sub is the front (front middle screen). Clean sound. Decent low end. Compared to the previous boombox, able to maintain a cleaner sound at higher volumes.
It would have been nice to have some kind of treble/bass controls or an equalizer. Not that I would expect Sirius to do it, but an built in AM/FM radio would be nice; MLB fans would appreciate to listen to AM for their local teams.
The signal pick up, it no worse than using the home docking stations. If you have trouble getting a signal in the house with the home dock or where ever, you'll have the same problem with the box. Unfortunately, no matter what you do, if you don't have a clean site for the antenna, then you'll have signal problems.
Sirius boom box By A26HS2BN95HW1C on 2007-05-12
This is just about the best hundred bucks that I've ever spent. This thing sounds great for being so simple. If you have Sirius radio, this is a must have.
- I love this!!
     By A1JFAKQUAMFVVP on 2007-05-13
I was looking for a boom box for around $100 that would sound good and be portable. All I wanted was something to hook my mp3 to with good sound. This has beat my expectations. I don't have a satellite radio, I love this, it has the best sound for $100 that you can find. I don't mind not having a clock, or whatever on it, I just bought for sound. I love it!!! You don't need the adjustments for treble/bass, this is perfect. It sounds beautiful!!
- Great sound from this boombox
     By AWG6MJ34LPBL5 on 2007-07-23
I was amazed at the sound this boombox delivers. I think that the amount of bass is just right on it and doesn't drown out the mids and highs. I usually put this in the corner of my living room and listen to it and it sounds much larger than it actually is. I also take this to my office and use it as well (plus I receive compliments on the stations I listen to.. Blues). My only suggestion would be to add features to where a person could tinker with the sound. Otherwise, I give this a two thumbs up.
- Satellite Boombox
     By A2IWIAJ4EXXFSG on 2008-02-24
I bought the Sportster 5 radio for my wife and I also wanted her to be able to use it around the house- not just in the car. This boombox looked like a good simple, plug-n-play solution. And it allows my wife to move her radio from room to room. It comes with 25 feet of cord on the antenna for convience but also wraps up neatly on the back of the boombox. The antenna thens locks into a slot on the top rear of the boombox.
We are able to get a good signal in the house without placing the antenna outside. That may depend on where we live. It seems to work better when boombox is not placed right next the window. We occasionally have to move the boombox around to get an adequate signal. But it works well and in places where I wouldn't think it could.
The sound quality is good- fm radio quality. The boombox has good frequency range and does not sound tinny.
The unit will operate on 8 D cells but I have not bought batteries yet to try that mode out.
The boombox is nicely designed and very attractive. My only dislike is the power cord. Its a little unwieldy for a portable type device. It has a computer like power cord- the adapter box with a short 120VAC wall cord and then a long low voltage wire that plugs in the back. I would have preferred the voltage conversion built into the unit so that the boombox could have had just a simple wall cord.

GREAT sound. Uncomparable convenience. So glad I bought this accessory for my portable Sirius receiver!

My husband listens to Sirius as much as he can...he is a NASCAR fan.
He loves the boombox...I love the plug it has for headphones ;^)
- awesome sound quality
     By A2TOZ0NKZDRJSB on 2007-09-11
this boombox has been one of the more pleasant surprises of my last several purchases. it has great sound quality for the price & as long as the antenna is aimed in the direction indicated in the instruction manual, reception is not a problem.
- Used my Sportster for something.
     By A1WB3UNFQ4X59Y on 2007-10-10
Bought a Sportster 4 for my car to get Stern and some decent programming for long commutes through Atlanta and between the signal never getting acquired for long and the FM transmitter never able to hold a frequency the thing was useless. Only thing more useless was Sirius Customer Service Warranty people (long story and too many bad feelings to go there now). Anyway, I bought a visor clip unit from Wal-mart for a fraction of the price and the thing works awesome so the Sportster is overpriced paperweight. That is until I rolled the dice and got the boom box. Now it just is/was overpriced. But hey, in the boom box it works, but very finicky. Here in an Atlanta suburb the antenna needs to be out in the open (not just by a window). I recall a previous reviewer who said it works awesome when you swap your Sportster car antenna for the boom box one...this guy must have done some wiring magic b/c the plug-in for the car antenna is not compatible with the back of the boom box.
So, why did I give it 3 stars? Well, it works great on batteries or plugged in when outdoors or on the go as long as there's not much obstructing the antenna from the sky. It works inside if you can run the antenna out a window into some open space again with direct unobstructed access to the sky in whatever direction it needs to face depending on where you are in the country. But, I have found it does NOT work by simply being by a window. So it's not good/convenient to bring to a hotel, or friends house, etc...But, it's serviceable and makes me feel like less of a sucker for buying a Sportster to begin with.
- Nicely balanced sound
     By A32LWIHFWNDBB5 on 2007-11-10
I have had an XM style boom box for a few years now and really enjoy it. This Sirius box has much better sound quality. There isn't quite as much echo and the bass is much more evident. My only complaint with Sirius is that it's much more difficult for me to pick up a signal than it is with my XM radio. The XM boombox can be indoors and sitting on a shelf with the antenna inside and pointing in the correct position....perfect signal. Sirius is much more difficult to predict. It either fades in and out or doesn't work at all unless it has a clear shot. I like both satellite systems equally though in terms of content.
- This Plug n Play ROCKS!
     By A3HJYHTANPOILO on 2007-08-07
It does exactly what it says and has been portable in and outside the house especially for trips.
- Family Friendly
     By A2BWKRB9ILVL2S on 2007-08-13
I bought this radio because I was worried about my Sportster being in the car on hot days. I am very happy with my radio. It couldn't be simpler. Don't expect a Bose but it's great for the money. The only way it could be better is if it had the AM/FM built in for the day I retire my satellite subscription.
I exchanged a high tech radio/dock from a dept. store because I wanted something that was easy to move from room to room and rugged enough to take a few bumps along the way:) This is the radio. And without a lot of buttons (3 to be exact, I'm not afraid to let the kids (7 & up)touch it!
PLEASE NOTE: Since there is an antenna it is important to know that I am in an open location. And, yes, it plays great outside too!
- One of the Best Sirius Purchases made!!!
     By A1Y85W80VW0GIF on 2007-12-31
My Husband is totally addicted to Sirius Radio! We both have Sirius radios in our vehicles. I purchased him his first Sirius Radio last Christmas, Then another Sirius radio in September, and now I bought the Universal Plug and Play Boom box this Christmas for him, he was exstatic!! It was so easy to set up! Now he can listen in the house, garage or anywhere he wants to, it was truly a Merry Christmas for him (and me too!!)
- Excellent sound
     By A1YVTY98G6LG4 on 2008-01-07
I bought the SUB X-1 boombox for my wife for Christmas so she could play her Sirius Sportster 5 radio in the house. Although this boombox does not have any treble or bass adjustments, you really don't need them. The sound is rich and clear, with little or no distortion. I would buy this product again, and I would recommend it to anyone.
- Sirius SUB-X1
     By AH628OU9UVBBK on 2008-02-22
The product is very good. I enjoy it. The only problem with Sirius radio is that the reception is not very good. It is very unstable and goes from good to poor very quickly.
- Great Product
     By A3HWZGEGPJTW2E on 2007-10-18
Great product - good sound quality. Wish it had a regular radio built in for those time when a satellite signal isn't available.
- sound's good
     By A1OWGYSHMDQ0U2 on 2007-12-31
I just got the boom box for a Christmas, and as a new Sirius subscriber am enjoying the commercial free listening a lot. I think the sound is excellent; no there isn't any ability to adjust treble or bass, but coming from somone who frequently fiddles with those buttons, I think the sound here is fine. I tend to blast it loud enough in one room to be heard around the house and it handles the increased volume beautifully.
Of course, I have to concur with all of the comments complaining about the difficulty receiving a signal; something I wasn't prepared for. Luckily we have a large window in the front of the house, facing the correct direction with a clear unobstructed view of the sky, no mountains, tall buildings, nothing but flat land, but the sound still cuts out. I frequently have to go and readjust things. No I am faced with the question, do I go and buy more products to get a clearer signal? I am also very disappointed not to be able to move the box around the house. I got a good price though, radio shack had an after Christmas sale/around 1/2 price, not a bad deal.
As an update - I did have to go out and buy an outside antenna. Finally, I have an uninterupted signal, but it cost another $40. The antenna came with a 30ft extension which was luckily long enough because if I needed to buy an additional longer one it was an extra $35. So, just in case you were wondering my total cost to date, the starmate player is currently listed at $69.67, the boom box at $96.76, the outdoor antenna at $40, add the bill I just got for the required annual subscription $160.62 (includes the $15 connection fee)....and your a far cry from that original $12.99 a month deal which sounded so good a few weeks ago! Still, I love sirius, but the cost certainly does add up.
- Great boombox
     By A2QSILY5FGL5D2 on 2008-01-04
I bought this as a gift for my husband. He loves it. Sometimes he has trouble with the antenna, but that is just because it is a satelite radio. Great product.
- SUBX1 is Garbage
     By A1A9C6AAB250RJ on 2008-01-17
My SUBX1 does not receive the satelite using the supplied antenna. This thing is absolute garbage!!! Note that my receiver works fine in my car with a car kit. This a common and known problem - don't buy a SUBX1.
- It all depends on where you try to use it! No Signal=No Music
     By A1VUUE1TN884J2 on 2008-02-14
The boombox itself is great and has worked awesome everytime I have a good signal. The problem will always be the availability of a good signal.
- description not helpful enough
     By A35HRL8YD8R7MV on 2008-04-24
I read over a lot of boombox descriptions looking for one for my son to use his MP3 player with. This may be a great product but it wasn't clear to me that it was ONLY for Sirius products. I am not totally up on all the technology and new gadgets but not as ignorant as some. I read the info several times and could not determine if it was strictly for a Sirius product or not. It is ONLY for Sirius.
- Sirius Boombox
     By A2LOVDO8L7KSM7 on 2008-05-04
This boombox is fantastic! It's so easy to use and the sound is incredible. We also bought an auxillary cord from Radio Shack ($6) so now we can hook up our disc man and mp3 player to it. It even comes in great up in the mountains (with a little fine-tuning of the antenna)! I would definitely recommend this product. Can't think of anything I don't like about it.
- no problems thus far.
     By A2QH60LILSUESU on 2008-05-21
I have had no problems this this unit thus far. I am able to use it in my office and receive 3 bars 98% of the time. The only time I receive bad reception is during heavy rain storm.
The one downside to this unit is that there is no equalizer.

- HIGH WITH BOOMBOX
     By A3C69LXKNIS20T on 2008-06-10
I TOOK MY RECENTLY PURCHASED BOOMBOX TO THE COLORADO MOUNTAIN'S AT OVER 9000' AND COULD REACH EVERY CHANNEL, AND DIDN'T MISS ANY OF THE NASCAR RACE'S THAT WEEKEND. I WISH I HAD MADE THIS PURCHAES EARLIER. BUY ONE AND ENJOY.
- A great product if it works for you
     By A3GADW0MFRQNUB on 2008-06-21
Reception-wise, it's hit or miss with this product, possibly depending on the area you live in. In my house, even in the basement, I get great reception without even moving the antenna from its mount on the boombox itself. At work though I had to carefully position it at a window to get decent reception (involving connecting a 50 foot antenna extension cord to it). Make sure you pay attention to the part of the instruction manual that says what way to point the antenna- I found it made a big difference at my office.
The sound quality is excellent. An equalizer would've been nice but it's really overall a pretty good stereo in spite of that.
- fantastic
     By A3DLRY8U6MCJW3 on 2008-07-18
I am a satellite radio junky. i have not listened to regular radio in 3 years and have no desire to go back. the problem that i have had with satellite radio is setup and signal. I've had two car units that never got a signal in my car. i had a home unit that ran extremely hot and took quite a bit of time to finally find the right spot in my home.
The boombox is a godsend. i bought it and was a little nervous about setting it up. i was hoping not to be disappointed. setup was a breeze and when i slid my stratus 4 receiver in, i was good to go. sound. crisp clean sound. this is the best sound that i heard from any of my receivers. it's really not the receiver its the fact that the boombox doesnt rely on a FM frequency.
I don't know all the technical specs but i gotta tell you the sound is incredible. the bass is phenominal. this little boombox definitely packs a massive punch. the sound will have your friends thinking you paid a lot more for it. From pictures i was thinking it was a big hunk of plastic but it's actually quite small. the black and silver color of the box can fit it any room against any decor. the handle looks a little blocky in pictures but is actually quite comfortable. it is really portable and would be great to take to the beach or if do construction a work site. since satellite is a relatively new concept some boxes or receivers are the first models and don't really push the envelope in terms of design or technology. however this box which was one of the first made for sirius is excellent in terms of design. its a quality product and would be hard to improve upon without sacrifice adding size, bulk, and weight. it's extremely light weight. some reviews suggest its 7 pounds w/o batteries (11 with) but i don't feel it. i'm a big strong guy but its hard to believe its that heavy. i think a little kid would have no troubles lifting it.
The downside is pretty consistent on other reviews. the box does not come with a remote control. however you can find a remote control out there for maybe $10 at the most. you can adjust the volume but you can't adjust the bass or anything else. the box has about 3 or 4 buttons total. so far the bass has been just right but i havent played it at high levels so i don't know how it will be affected if you blast it.
I love sirius even with my previous struggles i continued to buy receivers. i listen at work and at home and any time in between. If you are looking to join the satellite revolution start with a receiver and a boombox. easy setup, less frustrating, more enjoyment. if you can avoid having to rely on the fm frequency you will not be disappointed by your satellite experience. I definitely recommend this product.
