Personal Media Drive 300GB By A7MPPNF5DEIGE on 2007-06-12
This is the second HP media drive I've owned. The first one was the 160GB drive. It is a USB-connected hard drive that fits in a slot in Hewlett Packard's Media center PCs. The only problem with it is overheating. It has a built in fan but the exhaust slots are very small and quickly clog up with lint. It can be cleaned with a toothpick, but the easiest solution is to not leave it plugged in (and running) all the time. I mostly leave it unplugged and only actually run it when I am backing up my HDD (or recovering files).
Bad clusters galore By A32VHSK5LPVJKE on 2007-10-21
I wish I had seen the price that Amazon was charging for this external hard drive, because I paid more than twice that amount at Best Buy just a couple months ago. But that's not the reason for my 2-star review.
Bad clusters are the reason for my 2-star review. Lots of them. I've run chkdsk on this drive three times, and all three times it found and supposedly fixed all the bad clusters (I'm up to something like 36 MEG worth of bad clusters now), but every time I copy new files to the drive, it seems like at least one or two of them get corrupted and require yet another chkdsk.
It's not like I'm subjecting the thing to unreasonable conditions. I mostly download audience recordings of concerts from sites like [...] and then store them on the portable hard drive so I can take it along to work and listen to them there. I transport the drive in a backpack pocket that is just the right size for it, has some padding to it and doesn't get bounced around much. At work, it sits on a wide-open desk with plenty of room for the ventilation fan holes. And yet when I go to listen to the music I downloaded, usually about 10% of the files will be unplayable due to bad sectors.
If I weren't so lazy, I'd have already taken it back to Best Buy and demanded my money back...
Quick and easy By A2D7HUU7ABQJYY on 2007-05-11
Purchase of the HP HD3000S Personal Media Drive at 300GB was not only quick and easy, it fit perfectly into the docking bay of both my m7167c and m8000n HP Media Center PCs.
Great device! Shabby directions! By A22BH74ZQHS907 on 2007-08-19
Super device. Works like a charm. Directions made in China without language but with pictures demonstrate putting the device in its slot exactly backward. Do so and getting it out is a bear! The fan end goes in and up as can be determined by looking in the personal media slot. HP usually does better than this with directions. It should rapidly send out corrections sheets to vendors. The star rating is based on this major blunder in directions!

I had purchased a HP media center PC and I wanted to purchase a Personal Media Drive for it. This drive is perfect, it fits in a slot so no desk space is needed, it was a snap to put in and the price was lower than on HP's website!
- Backup, Short Again
     By A176VK0ONGNOLO on 2007-10-10
Once again Microsoft has failed the customer. Instead of backing up specific files by choice of the user, Microsoft assumes that we are all stupid. A proper backup in my opinion, would allow me to pick in detail the files that I want to pick. Instead, Microsoft makes that decision in a broad choice and then to make matters worse, backs up the files in code so that i cannot review them at will. This gives the customer only limited ability and control over those files. Whatever happened to making a mirror image that would make sense???????????
- junk drive
     By A2G8W1VLA2S8OF on 2007-11-24
I had the drive for a week when it failed. I spent over 60+ hours on the phone with HP tech support being waltzed around like a cheap date. On one call i asked immeadiately to speak with a supervisor and after giving them all the information that i had given before was transferred to another 14 different folks before i finally got the supervisor.
I was informed the warranty expired 3 months before i had even purchased it and after registering my unit online was told i would have to prove it was new. I was also given after speaking to 14 folks before on the same call and being irate "This is your first warning, if you dont speak to me professionaly, i will disconnect this call!" I was not happy and told the drone "Well had the other fourteen dopes i spoke with handled this call professionally, maybe i would speak to you professionally!"
I will never EVER buy another product of HP given the shoddy customer service and tech support. BUYERS BEWARE!

HP HD3000S Personal Media Drive 300 GB USB 2.0 External Hard Drive
I have purchased from Amazon 4 of these. I use one to back up my work computer (not an HP) using the cables that came with it. I then can use the backup to work at home on my personal computer by simply inserting it into my HP. I have Family Videos backed up on one of my 4 drives. Thousands of pictures backed up on another. Documents are backed up on yet another drive.
I have noticed that they are becoming harder to find, I hope HP is not discontinuning them. I may purchase two more just in case.
I love the idea and it works great!
- Vibration Driving me INSANE!
     By A64ZK2K50NCL2 on 2008-01-05
I've had this for about a year and have been on the phone with HP about a sound that I thought was the components inside the hard drive breaking down. But come to find out the sound is just the drive vibrating with the metal inside my Media center PC. I haven't found a solution to stop the noise, I have to pull it in and out of my PC several times a day to get files. It has become a HUGE drag. But on the other hand, I wouldn't want any other external Hard drive. So I deal with it. I'm about to buy the 750gb one hoping it wont vibrate as much. I'm thinking it has something to do with the wearing of the rubber stoppers on the drive. And this one will be my "back up back up" in the closet.
For anyone who doesn't have their Data backed up.. DO IT NOW. Hard drive failure will happen to you sometime in your lifetime, it's just a matter of when. This removable Hard drive Idea of HP was ingenious... just wish they had made it out of plastic or something less noisy.
- Don't expect long life
     By A2LK1Y762WCWSW on 2008-01-13
This applies to the 160 Gb version which died after warranty on very light use - backed up my hard drive about 5 times. Not reliable for archival storage

- I need more stuff for all this space
     By A35NSFT3SK1G4X on 2007-10-22
Fits right in the media drive bay without a thing, the drive comes with a power cord and usb cable if you want an exturnal drive. Good for making a back up of you os, because you don't even get disk with your new pc.
- Mis-matched expectations
     By A14WQ4A7M42BFM on 2007-09-09
I needed this product delivered before I left on vacatin on August 18. Your delivery estimate was very close to that date but the item did not arrive before ehe 18th so I bought a similar item locally. Normally, my purchases from Amazon arrive at the beginning of your time estimate; this time it did not. Usually, deliveries from Amazon are made via UPS ... this time it was USPS.
The rating above is meaningless because I never used the item.
