About Recumbent Exercise Bikes Despite the competition from trendy new fitness inventions, exercise bikes continue to be popular options for home exercise. They offer the same aerobic benefits of riding a bicycle at any time, in any weather, without leaving the comfort and safety of home. Exercise bikes don't take up much space, require little or no balance or coordination, and can provide an effective workout for all levels of users, from beginners to serious competitors. While the same could be said for a number of other types of home fitness equipment, the exercise bike is one of the few that allows you to watch television or read a magazine while you work out. The term recumbent literally means "lying down." Exercising in a recumbent or reclining position allows the user to have full ergonomic back support, without causing strain on the arms, neck and shoulders, all of which can be common effects of using an upright bicycle. For many people, having convenient access to quality exercise equipment is critical to sticking with a long-term exercise program.

Space Saving Solution By A281NPSIMI1C2R on 2006-09-07
If you want to exercise any time of the day without disturbing either the neighbors or your family in the next room, then the Stamina Silent Magnetic Resistance Bike is the perfect solution.
Not only is the quiet, it is comfortable and easy to assemble. While riding the bike, you can also see the TV since there is nothing in front of your face to look around. The main display panel is low enough and the seat is high enough to accommodate TV viewing. Most of the bike has been pre-assembled so it only takes a short time to finish the assembly.
The LCD Display area shows Time, Speed, Distance, Calories, Program and Pulse. A little bike runs around the edge of the screen. Programs to choose from:
Fat Burn
Max Fat Burn
Aerobic
Hill
Interval
Mountain
The pedals are comfortable to push and the position you are sitting in seems ideal if you are worried about your knees being uncomfortable. Some bikes I've tried are too uncomfortable to use, so this one was a nice surprise.
The way this bike is made makes it easy to move. There are "wheels" or at least leveling caps that make the bike easier to move if you have to slide this back and forth on the carpet. Everything is included for assembly and once you get this bike all put together, it is very easy to use and quite convenient. Since it is so quiet, you can even use this bike in the middle of the night or while other people are sleeping.
In 32 minutes it seems possible to burn 250 calories, ride
4.6 miles and maintain a speed at about 8.2 or higher on level 2. There are many levels, you can work your way up to various levels or change the levels manually for cooldown.
One day I rode for 8 miles in an hour!

....And I HATE to exercise! By A2NWDDWWGTAG7P on 2007-09-18
It's not that I don't know that I need to establish an exercise program, it's that I don't WANT to. Spending most of every day on my feet makes me less than anxious to stand up on a treadmill, elliptical machine, stair stepper--or even take a brisk walk around the neighborhood. What's a lazy girl to do?
Well, I did a lot of research and discovered that a recumbent exercise bike is a great option for people who are athletic as well as sedentary types like myself. I decided to buy a machine that was well-regarded here but that wasn't too expensive. Bells and whistles are not, in my opinion, what makes me want to exercise. After a month, I am pleased to say that I am no longer sedentary. Not that I've reached athletic, but hey, this is actually easy and enjoyable and is do-able long term! How many exercises can you really do while reading or watching TV? I've been on it many more days than not....probably at least 5 days a week. Amazing!
There are several programs that you can ride, and the screen tells you when and how much to speed up or slow down. Alternately you can just choose a resistance and pedal for as long as you'd like--for example, you might want to ride for 30 minutes, or 200 calories, or 5 miles. The pulse monitor works best if you take a 10 second reading every few minutes, otherwise each time it comes back to the pulse check segment (which is brief), it starts back with your pulse at the lower rate, then increases it to the current reading segmentally. Kinda clunky, but remember, you could easily spend 3-5 times as much on a machine that's not 3-5 times more functional. Get yourself one of those little clip-on pulse monitors if that's your main concern, and take a continuous reading.
I am very happy with this machine. Was simple to put together, seems sturdy and well made--haven't had any trouble with it at all. No squeaks, parts problems, etc. It is virtually silent as mentioned in other reviews, and feels very smooth and easy on your joints. It primarily burns calories by moving your big leg muscles, and helps with your cardiovascular fitness rather than building muscles. You could certainly lift weights, do arm circles, twist at the waist, or create other upper-body work if you feel the need.
Anyway, the bottom line is that if someone as lazy and exercise-allergic as me will get on and ride 5 days a week without whining, that's a pretty solid endorsement.
Comfortable, Quiet Ride By AZHO3TV9X4F6K on 2007-04-06
I purchased this over a month ago and have rode it on average 5 - 7 times per week. It was easy to assemble although I did get some help from my 4 year old son!
The heart rate monitor was a little flaky at first and would reset to zero when I was in the middle of a program but I later found that one of the plugs was not in all the way.
I usually use it in the early morning when everyone else is asleep and with it being so quite I dont have to worry about waking anyone. I'm 6 foot and find that the adjustments still have plenty of room both shorter and longer.
I'm 41 and had been doing light weight training for about a year but hadnt done any aerobic exercise for a long time. I started using it with the 20 minute programs at a resistance of 5 using the first program (1=Fat Burn, 2=Max Fat burn, 3= Aerobic) working my way up to the third program. The digital display shows you whether your speed matches the program with an easy to see light. I am now on resistance 6, second program after four weeks with two more resistance levels to go. During some evenings I just ride it for an hour at a steady 10 mph watching tv.
I would recommend this to anyone wanting an inexpensive, comfortable exercise bike to get back in shape on.
A great deal for the money! By A3E015K1DMW2MO on 2007-01-21
My husband bought me this bike for my birthday. We really searched for the best bike, and thanks to other reviews we bought this bike. This bike accomodates me at 5'9", and my husband at 6'3" with no problem. It is very quiet. Although mine has developed a small squeal, it is still not even loud enough for me to really care about or call in for advice.
I gave this bike 4 stars because the computer comes off a little too easily. I have many small children and they take it apart a lot. Nothing a little sticky tape cant fix.
My mother in law bought a bike for two thousand dollars and ours are almost identical ( hers did not develop a small squeal obviously). Even the programming choices are the same. Mine is a little lower to the floor also (those of you with kids in the house will appreciate the lower profile-your kids will have a shorter distance to fall off when they are climbing on it). A good deal for the money- feels solid and well built, yet I can move it from one room to another easily(when so inclined) thanks to the "rolling endcaps" on the frame. Aslo easy to move for vacuuming.
Stamina Magnetic Resistance Recumbent Bike By A39YQFM4NG6UP1 on 2007-05-13
So far (we have had the bike for 1 month) my wife and I are very happy with our purchase. The bike arrived quickly and in good shape. There was some simple assembly required before we could use the bike and all the parts and tools needed for assembly were included in the box. The bike works quietly and is comfortable to use. We appreciate the back support provided by this piece of equipment. My wife is short, I have a 35" inseam and the bike easily adjusts to fit us both comfortably. We did have to place the bike frame on 2X4 blocks to keep our feet from hitting the floor when we pedal. My wife likes to reverse the direction she pedals during her workout, and this bike offers resistance in both directions, a feature that we both appreciate. The electronic display has had some "gliches", but that doesn't affect the manual resistance levels. We expected the programs to automatically change resistance as the program progressed, but this doesn't happen (the manufacturer did not claim that the programs would automatically adjust resistance levels). We believe that the price we paid ($199.00) was a fair price for this item.
- Solid Choice for Basic Bike
     By A12IW8SDL53XQC on 2007-10-19
Arrived in great condition by UPS. Took about 1/2 hr to put easy to follow instructions together. Seat is as mentioned by someone else a new design but it was very comfortable. In fact besides the Recumbent Schwinn's this was just as comfortable seating. (Some recumbents like the Reebok do not have comfortable seating... to me.)FWIW I called Stamina Customer Service and the call was answered quickly by a polite lady. I asked her questions regarding replacement cost of the basic display, wheel, seat, peddle, etc. No price was over $18.00. Because of this I opted to not get the offered extended warranty. The bike opeates smoothly and quietly. I would not hesitate to get another one again with the understanding that it is a basic design when compared to Schwinn. That was the only other brand I was giving serious consideration to due to reviews but I simply could not justify the cost to gain the cardio programming some of their models offer. And frankly I do like the way the Stamina tension is controled by a manual dial. Less cost to fix if it breaks. A lot less. Bought it for $199.00 with free shipping. A great deal.
- nice bike
     By A1HWWP6JNCWFDW on 2007-09-13
This is a nice bike, but I've never owned another recumbent bike to compare it to. It doesn't bother me to have the resistance on a knob because I don't change it except when I get in better shape I will turn it up slightly. Otherwise I wouldn't change it during a workout. If you want to change resistance during a work out, you are probably better off with another bike. This bike is quiet and comfortable. I found that there is not an adjustment hole where I need it to adjust the distance from the seat and the pedals, but I found that it stays where I need it without the pin falling into the hole anyway. One irritation is that the heart monitor does not work unless you hang onto the heart monitor handles from the minute you start pedaling. Otherwise you have to push a button to turn it on whenever you decide you want to use it. Grabbing the monitor handles does not turn it on like the equipment at the membership gyms I've been to. But I really have no major complaints about the bike and therefore, recommend others consider purchasing.
update 2/13/08
The bike is less than 6 months old and I am having trouble already with the display resetting itself during my workout. There must be a short or something, because as I am peddaling, suddenly my time and distance return to zero. I would change my rating if I could to probably two or threee stars.
- exercise for the flat out lazy
     By ALP4YIOEVKGHW on 2007-09-29
I agree with Bengal girl. I intentionally wanted something that would not involve the effort of standing after a long day at work. I get on at 8:30pm at night and go for about 45 mins starting at a very slow pace. Am doing this while watching videos on youtube or DVDs from the library. Laptop is on the bed and bike is turned toward the bed with headphones connecting us. It's great! Right now I'm watching the TV show N3mbers on DVD, which someone recommended, and it's a great way to spend an exercising hour.
Pros:
> It IS quiet. Almost silent.
> Feeling lazy, tired, lacka energy? This you can do. You're sitting with your legs barely moving at first. Try to continue at slow lazy pace and it won't happen.
> Takes care of shaky legs syndrome at night.
> Took under an hour to put together. Husband said it was easy.
> So far, comfortable seat. Have been on it for 1.5 hours with no discomfort at all, which surprises me. Better than an upright bike.
> Arrived quickly after ordering, within a few days.
Cons:
> Computer arrived defective. The electronic part is loose from its frame. Sent back to AMAZON and I hope they do the right thing by replacing it.
> Bought on 9/15/07 for $234. One week later the price is $199.
Overall, this seems like it would be a good exercise option for an overweight person who really doesn't like to exercise. I don't mind exercising but only under optimal conditions. It can't be too hot, or too cold, or too dark, or too bright outside, etc. - a laundry list of excuses. So settling into this evening routine seems to work well for me.
I do need AMAZON to replace the computer however. Am a little concerned about that return and what their response will be.
- Awesome bike
     By A3CDYJNLXJO19J on 2007-05-26
I bought this bike from Amazon about 6 weeks ago. I read all of the feedback from other customers which was extremely helpful. This bike is wonderful. I have MS and need to excercise my muscles and this bike has helped more than I ever dreamed. It is so quiet, that my husband actually uses it late at night and I don't even know it. It took about 1/2 an hour to put together, and have been in bike heaven ever since. You can't go wrong if you decide to get this bike and even better getting it through Amazon, the free shipping is a great addition.
- Great bike for the price
     By AJIP438ZI6QSV on 2007-07-13
This is a great recumbent bike for the price and I am so glad I went ahead and purchased it. The previous reviews were right on. I shopped around and decided this was the best deal. Delivery was very fast. Took my husband about an hour to assemble and he said it was very easy to put together.
The ride is so very quiet and smooth. The instructions were a little confusing at first on operating the digital display, but they became much easier the more I worked out on the bike. I like that the display is low and I can watch TV without any obstruction. The seat is very comfortable and the programs are challenging. Since I am a beginner, I am taking it easy and gradually working my way into working out more intensely on the bike. The instructions are very helpful in doing this. The pulse monitor is the only thing that I don't feel is very accurate as the numbers jump around a lot. Everything else is perfect and I would recommend this bike to anyone.
- Great bike for the price!
     By A1B6SPLY63WUUZ on 2007-11-09
The box the bike came in was mangled but the bike appeared to be in good shape. Fairly easy to assemble. The function of this bike is fantastic for the price! I have been using an upright bike for years and consider myself to be in good shape. This bike busts my chops! If you use the programs correctly, you will get a fantastic workout in a short period of time. Took one star away for pulse reading non-functional (don't care)heels occasionally brush the floor on revolution (but this could be because of thick carpet), and seat rocks slightly when pedaling fast.
My mom owns a 450.00 Schwinn and I like this one better!
- Poor Quality Control
     By A2W2N7SFIEXEYE on 2008-04-24
This bike seems fairly well made and i'm sure it will work well - once Stamina can figure out how to actually include all of the needed parts to construct it.
Be warned as looking at other reviews here it seems like you are about 50% likely to not receive everything you need to actually put it together! I was missing about 15 parts in total, namely a bunch of bolts, nuts and washers that I needed to do the entire seat assembly. They were just completely missing.
I have contacted Stamina to get replacement parts shipped out, but from reading other reviews on here that will probably take a week or two so my "2nd day shipping" from Amazon was a total waste as I will now have to wait weeks for silly parts that should have been included in the first place.
- Very Happy
     By AGDE31E5DGUKL on 2007-07-25
Received the bike in 4 business days. It was super easy to assemble, my boyfriend and I put it together in about 15 minutes. The seat is a little different than the picture (more like a wider version of a regular bicycle seat), but I like it better. I was pleasantly surprised at how small it is, since I live in a little one bedroom apartment. I like that there are 10 resistance levels - I'm not very active, so I haven't been able to get past 5 yet and even that was tough. Oh, and it's so quiet, it really is practically silent. I was worried about it feeling kind of cheap because it was so inexpensive, but it's actually a really sturdy, smooth ride. The screen concerns me a little, it's a bit confusing, and really plasticy(cheap feeling), but that's about the only non-positive thing I have to say about the bike. All around, I'm super happy with my choice. It's great quality for such a low price point.
- Exceptional value!
     By A1EP0FWEQLT1D2 on 2007-11-17
Very quiet. Easy to assemble. Fairly light. Small footprint. Many different program, it monitors your speed and shows you if you're going too slow or fast. Overall it's high-end equipment for a bargain price.
- Great Bike!
     By A266YEWEWY5VLM on 2007-11-16
This bike is wonderful, very very easy to put together and it is extremely quiet while in use. I was also able to fit it into a very small space. It is well worth the money and the shipping was REALLY fast. I'm very happy with this bike. 100% recommended!
- Not that great...
     By A1MY1K693ENLK4 on 2008-06-18
Pros:
It's a recumbent bike for 200 bucks.
Cons:
Poor shipping container
Completely manual tension controls- no computer control
Computer unit/programs are a joke/meaningless
I just bought the bike through Amazon. Shipping was about what I expected... the box was messed up. Stamina didn't design the packaging very well. The bike fits very tightly in the box resulting in one part pushing into the end of the box. This might not seem like a big deal, but under normal shipping conditions it is easy to imagine the bike being damaged. Indeed, that very piece was bent on mine almost to the point where I could not use it - I managed to get it assembled though rather than having to send it back.
A lot of people complained about the assembly... I don't really know why... it all looks pretty complicated, and they don't do a great job with the instructions, but ultimately the assembly boils down to screwing on the feet, back, seat and bars... it's not that hard... Unless yours is damaged in shipping, which cost me a half hour trying to bend the pieces back in place.
The bike itself is OK. It is nowhere near as quiet as people describe it online here... Sure, it's quiet, but if you've had a magnetic bike before, this will probably feel loud. I don't mean to make it sound horribly loud or something... but it's definitely not silent.
The construction itself isn't that great either... but that's to be expected on a 200 dollar bike.
Lastly, and this is good to note... ALL OF THE TENSION CONTROLS ARE MANUAL. I wasn't clear about this when I purchased it - though admittedly I should have been. The implication of this is that THE COMPUTER DOES NOT CONTROL THE TENSION. So, when you see all the descriptions about training programs and whatnot - they're all based on your speed. So the hill climb, for example, does not get harder... it just asks you to pedal faster. The reason I didn't even think of this as an issue was that I've actually never seen a device work like that before... I didn't even think of it as an issue.
I was debating between this and a bike at Walmart (embarrassing, I know), but in hind-sight, I think I'd have been better off with the other device.
On the whole, it works fine, it does what it's supposed to... and it's what I ordered. But the various issues with it have led me to think I'd have been better off getting something else.
- Easy to assemble and very quiet as promised.
     By A26VQXNB21JHI5 on 2008-07-01
I finally got around to putting this together and was pleasantly surprised at how easy it was to do. It is quiet as the description promised. My only two complaints would be that the pedals hang in such a way that it's difficult to slip your feet in without the assistance of my hands propping the pedals up. I don't know if it was a design flaw or how I installed them, however, I didn't see another way. The other annoying feature is that it's hard to adjust the seat backward or forward. The frame doesn't slide easily when in adjustable mode. However, if you're the only one using it it won't be an issue because it will never need to be adjusted. Despite those issues, I'm very happy with my purchase.
- awesome!
     By A1Y07F32FT8OWB on 2007-08-18
i love it, ive had it for about a month, done it for around seventy minutes a day and no problems so far
really quiet, you can watch t.v while you do it, plus the display board is low so you can see right over it
- I love it!
     By A31UDNMI3AALNN on 2007-12-07
This is so quiet! It has everything you need to get a great workout. I have used it a lot and can not find anything I dislike. It is easy to move, which I do a lot. I can watch TV and get a workout all at once, you gotta love that!
- silent running
     By A30MY7TMBS0GRH on 2008-02-13
This is a great product. When I was putting it together the frame for the back support and the hardware to attach the back support to that frame were missing. I called the company and within 2 weeks the parts had arrived. Fortunately, I moved the bike over to the wall and the wall acted as the back support. I did not want to have to wait to try out my new bike and so that idea worked out well. This is perhaps the quietest piece of exercise equipment I have ever had. I can watch my favorite DVDs while I ride and the noise from the bike is so low that I don't have to turn the TV's volune up to hear it. I love this bike and we'll be great friends, as I lose weight and improve endurance.
- Extremely Happy
     By A2ZPLRHI40N4M0 on 2008-05-11
The bike arrived in less than a week, and wasn't hard to put together. One note however, some of the nuts and bolts were already attached to some pieces, I kept looking through the packing material for them, because the instructions listed them, and then realized they were already attached. I love how quiet it is, I can easily watch tv with my family and not disturb anyone. It is easy to do, and effective. I've been losing weight since I've been using it, and am so happy that it really is easy to use, and comfortable. I have plantar fasciitis in my left heel, so this is a perfect way for me to exercise. This is a very sturdy bike that will last for a long time. I would highly recommend this bike.
- Just what I wanted
     By A2KBQNC8NYCTWR on 2008-05-17
I was looking for a comfortable way to get in some exercise while I watched tv in the morning. It is perfect. I can keep the tv volume low and still hear even when I pick up speed on the bike. The seat is very comfortable and I love the various programs. The only thing I haven't figured out yet - granted I didn't read the manual - is how to get it to read my pulse. I did take away a star because of this, but I am not too worried 'cause I also purchased a heart monitor (another great product). Also, the calories burned monitor came out pretty close to that displayed on my heart rate monitor. Great buy and great price.
- Stamina Magnetic Resistance Recumbent Bike
     By AFJ5D5GBZQLY9 on 2008-05-18
I decided to buy this Stamina Magnetic Resistance Recumbent Bike after reading the reviews. I must say that I am quite happy with it. I've lost 10lbs in one month. The only problem was the computer was resetting itself so I lost track of the amount of time I was exercising. But this was quickly fixed when I called the manufacturer, I received a new computer in two weeks. Also the calories burn count is the same for each resistance setting which is not right. All in all I have no regrets buying this bike for this price.
- just what I hoped for
     By AL2ZXQP9IGFZX on 2008-05-24
A friend put the bike together and said it was simple. Off to a good start. The computer didn't work properly and there was a cap missing, but it worked great-I don't need to know all of that information or need a count down. A few days later I called the company and within a week they sent out a new computer and the cap. The bike is just perfect for reading or watching tv. The way I look at it is that I am getting some exercise when I am sitting and doing what I would normally be doing sitting in bed or on the couch. What could be better??

- stamina recumbent bike.
     By A1XH5RE6OD2ZY7 on 2008-02-17
I have had my recumbent bike for about one month. When I got it, it was very easy to put together, even for a mechanically challenged person like me. One problem: The tension knob was broken. I called stamina the next day and got a new tension knob free of charge in about a week. That was very hard to replace, but I love it now that it works!!
- Good quality for the price
     By AWOBJ819XU7U0 on 2008-02-22
The shipping was fast via UPS, however the product arrived slightly damaged. It was shipped in the original manufacture's packaging which was obviously not intended to survive regular individual handling. The package had been repaired several times. I was worried that all of the parts would not be present as you could see inside the packaging at several places. When opening the package I found that part of the frame of the bike seat was bent. I was able to bend the part back into shape with a wrench and the assembly of the bike went smoothly from there. The product looks good and performs well. The action is very smooth and the operation is very quiet. Its low profile and quiet operation makes watching TV or listening to music easy. In my opinion, this is a very good product, especially for the low price. It seems very strong and is easily adjustable to fit different people. I would recommend this bike to anyone looking for this type of product.
- Just what I needed!
     By A1XIKM36S1J2TK on 2008-02-22
This is a good, solid, well-built machine. You can pay more, for more "bells and whistles" but you won't get anything better, unless you pay a lot more. I've compared the Stamina with the expensive machines at my local gym, and I really think it's better. True, the gym machines are larger (and heavier), and have all of the electronic monitoring and programmable workout routines, but the basic monitoring and routines that I have with the Stamina are all that I really need. Plus, it's very quiet. It only weighs about 75 pounds, so it's easy to move. The seat is even more comfortable than the ones on the gym machines! For a recumbent exercise machine, it's got every important feature covered.
- Good product, mixed experience with service
     By A15DQADN7MH1MI on 2008-02-25
I am quite pleased with the bike, but it arrived with two problems: one side of the cover was broken during shipment by something that punctured the carton, and the computer would spontaneously reset every few minutes during operation (time, distance, calories would reset to zero). I contacted Customer Service by Email and they immediately sent me a replacement cover and computer. Unfortunately, the replacement cover did not fit, there had been some design change. And the replacement computer would reset just like the original. I Emailed Customer Service again but got no response. Still using the bike - the broken cover is only a cosmetic problem. And the replacement computer "healed" itself after about 2 weeks.
The resistance control is purely mechanical, which is good because the bike still works if the electronics fail. But the "calories" total is meaningless since it does not respond to the resistance setting. The frame is adequately stiff, the bike runs quietly and takes little space. Good value for the money.
- Good bike for the price
     By AS7GON1MU599K on 2008-02-25
If you are expecting all the bells and whistles that come on bikes that cost two, three, or four hundred dollars more than this bike, you will be disappointed. If, however, you are looking for a sturdy and compact recumbent bike at a reasonable price, this bike definitely deserves serious consideration.
The box it arrived in was not damaged at all (apparently a problem for many), and -- with one notable exception -- it was easy to put together following the instructions. (The exception is that the back supprt bar came with the bolts already in it and no matter what we tried, we could NOT get one of the bolts out and therefore could not install the back rest and back support bar until Stamina sent a replacement bar and bolts. Tne new bar came with bolts that the allen wrench that came with the bike did not fit, and we could not get the bolts (old ones OR new ones) into the sides of the back support. It appears to be a mis-match on the threading. Fortunately, we were able to put both bolts in the bak of the support and this holds it very securely even without the two side bolts.) It took about a week and a half to get the replacement part from Stamina.
The computer is VERY basic, and sometimes does odd things, but works for the most part, allowing you to track distance, time and speed. It also tracks calories burned (but there is no where for you to enter your weight, so I have no idea how it actually calculates calories) and heart rate. As mentioned by someone else, the "programming" does not change the resistence level at all... it just has a display telling you to increase or decrease your pedaling speed in order to match the work level of the program (increase pedal speed for higher levels, decarease for lower). The resistance control is manual but is easy to change, and there is a significant difference between the lowest and highest resistance levels.
If you are very short (I am just over 5'3"), you will have to move the seat closer to the front of the unit than there are holes drilled for, but tightening the mechanism down on the main bar itself, without going into one of the holes, holds securely. I noticed in the instruction manual that this bike has a 250 pound weight limit. I don't remember seeing that in the online description (but it doesn't effect me so maybe I just missed it), but if you are a large person, you probably need to know that.
My only real complaints are that the seat could be better padded, and the back support is in a more upright position than I would like (and is not adjustable). I currently have an incisional abdominal hernia, however, so maybe without the hernia the position of the back support wouldn't be a big deal.
I wanted something sturdy, reliable, compact, and economical, and this bike meets all of those needs.
