  • PS3's Need To Race

    By A3W4D8XOGLWUN5 on 2006-12-18
The Playstation 3 system has definitely been recognized as one of the most popular video game systems on the holiday market today. Although there have been many different games that have thrived from the earlier Playstations that Electronic Arts have delivered well on, there is arguably one game that has the rush for anybody who wants to be a street demon, Need For Speed. Since it debuted a decade ago, it has been recognized as one of the best racing game series of all time. The last version, Need For Speed: Most Wanted, did a fantastic job at bringing in new reved up racers to all game consoles alike. Now, a new chapter has helped Need For Speed make its debut on the Playstation 3, but does it deliver like its PS2 counterpart?

Need For Speed Carbon for the Playstation 3 is a wild and driven racing game that deliver mostly well for all gamers of all kinds. The game picks up mostly well, as you enter Palmont City, eager for a new challenge after Rockport's Most Wanted madness, as you race your way, trying to conquer the streets with your crew. The game features nearly all the excitement, as you race your way to the top of the heat, to tackle Darius and his league of underground racers. The game features all the classic cars you've come to love from the Mazda RX-8, to exoticas like the Porsche Carrera, and also classic muscle cars like the Dodge Charger, and the Plymouth Challenger as well. There are also thrilling tracks that make the game shine well from circuit races, and speedtraps against the cops, to the return of drifting tracks, something that wasn't seen since Underground 2. The graphics are polished up noblely well, and thrive with each speed of the gameplay. There are however, a couple of disadvantages to the game. One of them, is that you don't have as much challenge against the police as you did with Need For Speed Most Wanted. The other disadvantage, is the muscle cars are very difficult to control for new gamers, and take a whole lot just to get used to, especially in the challenge mode.

Still, even though I wish there could've been more that should have been played in Need For Speed Carbon for the Playstation 3, but it is definitely enough to give any speed demon a thrill of a lifetime. If you have the PS3, than I recommend you place this on your gamelist. I loved playing this chase, and you'll enjoy this need as well.

  • A fun arcade racer

    By A5JLAU2ARJ0BO on 2007-02-26
Need for Speed Carbon is a decent racing game for the PS3. The graphics is good but nothing to get overly excited about. The framerate is consistently high, which is great when you are driving at over 120 mph. (I play it in 1080i mode on my LCD TV.) The career mode has some sort of storyline, but it's complicated and I just skipped over the poorly delivered dialogs.

The game is an arcade racer, which means its car handling physics is not very realistic. A number of real-world nameplates are represented, and each does have its own "feel," but the designers and developers made no attempt at making them feel real. (The opposite of this approach is, of course, the venerable Gran Turismo series.) The best thing about an arcade racer like this is the driving is very forgiving. You can corner easily at over 90 mph, something you'll never do in Gran Turismo. You can also turn off car damage and smash into everything and anything -- cop cars, oncoming traffic, etc. -- destroy them yet sustain no damage. Because the framerate is really good, when you use the bumper or dash view and drive above 120 mph on an HDTV, you can really feel the rush.

The career mode has you race to win over territories. You must place no. 1 in each race to win. After a while, the races do get repetitive, as do the cat-and-mouse chases with the cops. The city in the game, which seems to be modeled after L.A., is not very big, so after half an hour or so you'll have travelled on all its streets and highways. I wish EA had included a more expansive setting.

In short, this is a fun game and makes a great rental. It's too expensive as a purchase, and its limited variety of play makes the purchase a poor value.

  • What an arcade racer should be

    By A22AD8M2SSOFHJ on 2007-01-27
Need for Speed has been perfecting the arcade racer for many years. Need for Speed Hot Pursuit was one of my favorites because of the police pursuits. Carbon takes that element to the next level. Now this game features several unique features which make this game special.

The storyline is rather unique and gives you a personality. You are a character that you never talk or have a face. It would have been nice if they allowed players to personalize that aspect more. This game is not overly challenging and features well designed courses. There are various race types that if one doesn't challenge you enough another will. I seem to do pretty well it just about every race style. Except for drift racing which is very challenging and requires great timing. This game adds a new aspect called a wingman. This character will help you in just about every race. Whether it be to block another race or bring home first place. As you progress in the game you can personalize your vehicles more and also earn newer faster vehicles. That is not only important for career racing mode but also online play. As I have noticed the competition out there is excellent. The game also has added a card collecting goal. This game gets you rewards for collecting four cards in each category. The physics of this game is excellent and the speed is furious. You really feel the speed of the cars out there are quickly understand the capabilities of the car you are driving.

When it comes to graphics the 360 comes in first at least with this game. The graphics are a little darker and muddier than its Microsoft predecessor. Although that being said the graphics are still excellent. By far these games continue to shine in creating beautiful environments. The entire game takes place at night which may be a little disorienting to some.

Overall I love this game. From the great storyline to the music that seems to fit every environment perfectly. I would consider this game for anyone who like some aderaline pumping action.

  • NFS Carbon = Awesome

    By A13K8I9OJHLO8U on 2007-01-30
I loved this game. Easy to learn and play = fun. If you want a racing game, then get it. It's one of those games you can keep playing over and over again.

  • THis is a great race game

    By A1A84LS1IC10TU on 2007-02-19
I like more this title than Gran turismo series. This concept is fun... you can customize your car and run with another guys who can help you. i finished resistance, and this game is more addictive you want to run all the challenge to achieve more things. If you like the race games you must have it.

  • Best Racer for PS3 to Date
    By A3VOLIY0OAHUQ8 on 2007-02-16
I was a big fan of NFSMW. NFSC is the best racer available for PS3 right now.
Pros: Tons of customization options. Challenging canyon races, go off the edge and the race is over. Tons of unlockables. Drift challenges are new, fun, and very challenging.

Cons: Police pursuits have been made easier than in Most Wanted, and pursuits are no longer mandatory challenges to complete. All races are at night, although, there are seldom changes in weather (ie. rain). Graphics have improved from Most Wanted, but could be better considering it's PS3.

  • Sweet..Need 4 Speed
    By A1II0E7D7BTI8N on 2007-06-24
I absolutely love this Need for Speed! The game play is great...even the story line is pretty good...I wish the graphics were a touch better..but 720p ain't too bad...The map could be a bigger too. Overall an awesome game.

  • Fun, but a little disappointing
    By A1K9GTUDFKLKMF on 2008-04-06
The first time through was pretty fun, but it was over too quickly - and forget playing through a second time (at least I had no interest). Part of the reason I got this was my understanding that you can unlock the Audi R8. You can, but you don't actually have free use of it - really idiotic in my opinion. Graphics were decent, but not really next-gen. Car selection and customization was pretty good.

  • Great for everyone
    By A2MG1NU6I6EDHE on 2006-12-23
This game is great from the graphics to the quick races. My six year old loves it. One of the best driving games ever. When the rain hits the wind shield you think you are in the car.

  • Another EA racer....
    By A1RJ7QZKBRQN1M on 2006-12-30
Need for Speed Carbon is not too bad of a game. Again there are numerous cars in 3 different styles, Tuner, Muscle, and Exotic. What's new is also having a "wingman" to either be a blocker, drafter, or scout to help you win races. There are some features that are similar to Need for Speed Most Wanted. Every race in the game now takes place at night, which I think is okay, but it would be nice to be racing in day light also and seeing the beauty of your whole car. The cops are less annoying in this game, because you won't deal directly with them as in Most Wanted. There will be times where they chase you, but it won't happen much until you're racing to control the last parts of the city.

This game's career mode actually goes by pretty fast since you don't have to race a whole lot or run from cops to scoring points to get to the boss.... You just simply have to win a few races and boom...you race the boss...and it's pretty easy. Moving to the graphics...it looks pretty good. Though I can not compare it to with the Xbox 360's, the graphics are pretty good and will not disappoint at all.

Overall, the game is a great racing game since you can customize your ride even more in this game...no other racing game so far for the PS3 allows you to customize your ride to this extent. Great game to play online since it's also free to race online or just with a couple friends over at your place. If you want a good racing game...grab this or rent it.

  • Bland racing game with a few nice touches
    By AWP9CQBB3882G on 2007-01-03
Yet another EA pumped out remake of a xbox360 title, which shows as this game actually looks better on the 360. Having said that the game itself is fun and the learning curve for the game is very good, making it easy for you to start with and then turning up the heat as you get more invested in the game. After this, the game just turns into a tedious battle against 'bosses' where the only way to win the race is to know the course completely and hope that luck ensures that 'dumb cars' aren't generated on the apex of key corners.

  • Addictive
    By A6LAIJIAU1B24 on 2007-01-11
Very fun and good graphics. My only complaint is that I played it so much in the past 2 weeks I've already finished my career. I am still working on the challenges but I wish it would have been a little more difficult to beat.

  • Not replayable
    By A2QSI269HXIT9X on 2007-03-19
I started with the version for PS2. It was pretty good, but when I got the PS3, I had to get the other version. It is alot better with more traffic and the rain is phenominal. The only thing that keeps me from giving this game a perfect 5 is that there is no replay. They should have at least put it on the canyon and drift runs. Overall I really enjoy the game especially the online play.

  • Definately worth the money!
    By A357NBXKV6FNPP on 2007-01-09
Definately lives up to the NEED FOR SPEED name! While it might not offer the mind blowing graphics the PS3 is capable of, watching your customized lambo fly through the air at 100mph in slow motion is pretty nice on any decent TV. If you love racing games, or even running from 90 cop cars in Z06 vettes with spike strips and ramming suv's ahead of you, then your gonna love this. Plus once you finish your career mode there are still more cars to unlock by playing online and completing challenge races. Check it out for yourself!

  • Just a little too short.
    By on 2007-01-28
This is probably one of my favorite NFS games I've played so far. Almost everything about this game is awesome. It has great graphics, it's really fun, but the only problem is that it doesen't take too long to beat. The last boss you go against was still hard enough for me to have to restart a few times,(especially in the Canyon Duel) but overall it was fairly easy and short. The overall rating would've been 5 stars if it was longer and just a tad harder. But this is truely an addictive, fast, and fun racing game that should at least be rented or bought from any of you NFS fans.

  • it's good
    By A2IRBL49U1LQLE on 2007-05-15
It's a two player game offline, and multiplayer online that is fun, but it's not that realistic, I think that perhaps Motorstorm is better. The graphics are great but it doesn't use the sixaxis, that's bad.

  • ps2 game
    By A39WY2CRH51PWH on 2007-06-26
this game is good if you dont care about how realistic it is because its like a basic ps2 car game to me. an example is how i can drive 200 mph and bounce off a parked car or wall and drive away like nothing happend then this game has giant lights that appear in the middle of the street just to show you were somethings at like a check point, thats something you see in a cheap arcade game. and the cops can never catch me so its pointless to get chased by them all you have to do is keep crashing into them going 200 mph when they road block you becasue remember your car is undestructable... wow what a rushed game they should have just made it for ps2 or for the wii.

  • Very fun game
    By A38Z9PWMK4A6GJ on 2008-02-08
This game is rally fun. It's like need for speed 2 (underground) and most wanted put togather. So far this is the need for speed that I like the most.

  • Boring
    By A235003T5SL0RM on 2008-03-29
this is the worse game eve! I mean the voice acting is good and all but if i wanted a movie i'd buy it on top of that it is nowhere as good as prostree. People say prostreet is crap but it all depend on your tast. If you look at it as gran turismo than naturally it cra. I say don't buy this game buy prostreet if you ca.

  • BORING, Next!!!

Get A Better Game This Game Has No Fun At All Looks Like Ps2 Graphics And The Cars Are Slow.

  • What COULD have been the best Need For Speed...
    By AC900F7CBJDWE on 2008-08-23
As far as gameplay, this game delivers on several platforms really pushing the player to their arcade racing abilities. this could have been the best Need For Speed ever but there are several aspects that started to annoy me. the first thing is that when you actually do finish the game, even 100%, you do not get the then named Audi LeMans Quattro (R8), you don't even get to choose any prizes from the "boss" at the end like everyone else! there are also cars and objects that you HAVE to play online games to get! one of my main arguements against this game is that once a race is over the prize money DRAMATICALLY reduces! this makes it next to impossible to buy a new car....actually it just takes FOR-EV-ER! this game has next to no replay value whatsoever. as much fun as this game is once you DO fully modify a super car, it ends pretty much directly after.

  • speed carbon
    By AHICDXJQ3UOY4 on 2007-01-18
I have never recieved the game. It was a christmas present to my grandson and when it did not arrive i purchased it elsewhere. I have not received a credit yet on my crredit card.

  • much too short
    By A2V6R49S9B36CU on 2007-01-22
Game play from the beginning is fun, but the time spent on the city layout seems a bit of a waste, considering you can just "jump" to any point on the map automatically. The drift races are ok but pretty easy to fake after a little practice, the crew option is pretty useless and most of all the game difficulty and length is tragic. beat the entire game over the course of a week of casual gameplay. the only redeeming aspect is quality of the cinematics (not including the acting). I wish I bought ridge racer.

  • A fun part of the series...
    By AZ6J3ODK1R9UB on 2007-07-19
This is the first need for speed game I've owned and I've really enjoyed it. I would recommend it for the people new to the series though as I think those people who own other NFS games are going to find this a bit boring after a couple of hours. The graphics look a lot like those of the PS2 as well.

  • Need For Speed Carbon
    By A3T6YUNC8INAD5 on 2007-08-08
I bought Need for Spped Carbon for my playstation2 and the game was like playing a cartoon and it kept on freezing up. I thought maybe the playstation was dirty since I own Playstation2 and 3 also tried it in playstation3 it didn't help. Bought the game for Playstation3 and it works great and much better graphics since it used on HD Plasma T.V. Depending on skill level game does get harder the futher you go.

  • Need for speed carbon
    By A321UCVYBGKSFY on 2007-09-07
It was ok iwas never able to go online tho. I was expecting much nore after paying so much for the ps3 and the game. I dont beleive this was a game that could not have been done for the ps2 exept for the graphics. There was nothing that stood out too much. The autosculpt was good but with only 4 bodykits and they looked the same on almost all the cars. The custom paints were good tho. But there were many little things that were missing like drag, replays and the cars werent as customizable as the were in preveous parts(rotors, lights, hydrolycs) This was my experience with the game and im sure other people had better ones but if i had a choice to buy the game again i wouldnt. Hopefully NFS Pro Street isnt another dissapointment.

  • Just good old NFS:Carbon
    By A2GCXZUCQ0VJK9 on 2007-10-11
This is the same game you play on PC or 360 or whatever console you want. Graphics are unmodified and gameplay and storyline is exactly the same. Not much effort here :( Anyways this game is great. If you havent tried it on PC then its a must have.

  • You won't believe it
    By A1QJJU33VNC4S7 on 2007-12-12
If you own the PC version and have already played it on full details there's no point buying this, if not, graphics are great!
However, there's nothing to be excited about the graphics. Even if they look good they don't match up to the power of the PS3.

Just have it added to your PS3 collection, you might get back to it after a while!

  • Great Game...Loads of Fun!
    By A1LRGCPVG6MOEU on 2008-01-01
Really cool game, nice that they removed the free roam feature and you can now just jump straight to the race events. Overall beautifull graphics on my HDTV connected to my PS3.
