  • Transcend 4 GB Class 6 SDHC Card - Good Card for SDHC Compatible Devices

    By A17BUUBOU0598B on 2008-05-10

The Transcend 4GB SDHC CARD (Class 6) is a great card for the price. I was at first a little skeptical about the brand, but I buy way too many memory cards to ignore a good price when I see one. And I'm happy to report that I've experienced decent performance and reliability issues with this card. That's as compared to other cards I own including SanDisk, PNY and Kingston.

As long as your devices are compatible with the SDHC format, this card is a good buy. 4 GB is a nice size though I do prefer 8 GB capacity for high capacity storage.

The class 6 speed is the fastest speed available in mass market SDHC cards. Class 6 guarantees minimum transfer speeds of 6 MBs, but I've gotten speeds up to 20Mbs! That makes this card perfect for storing pictures in RAW image formats.

The Class 6 speed is on par with the Sandisk Extreme III cards that on average are about $15 to $20 more per card. If you don't have an SDHC reader, you may opt to get the package with a reader included to download your pics. If not you can just transfer your pics directly from your camera with your card still inserted. An SDHC card reader can be bought separately if your PC doesn't have a compatible slot.

General SDHC and SD Card Tips

There are a few tips that I've learned the hard way through buying TOO MANY different memory cards.
    1. Make sure your device is compatible with the card! Even in regular SD cards, some older electronics aren't compatible with that large of a size (2 GB). In terms of SDHC cards, make sure your camera or other device is SDHC compatible. SDHC is different from regular SD and only newer devices tend to have built-in compatibility
    2. Once you install this in your camera or device, you will generally want to format the card with your compatible device's interface. That is because the standard formats for certain devices, particularly Canon, are different from the factory installed format
    3. Just like your devices, most computer SD card readers are not compatible with the SDHC format. So use a card reader or download the pictures via USB connection to the camera with the card still installed.
    4. For some reason, placing the card in the locked position allows some older laptops to still read it. This is just to be used in a pinch however, and it won't apply to all systems
    5. If you did not properly format your card, you may be able to save things to it and then have them "disappear." If this happens to you, make sure you use the software recovery tools BEFORE you try to save anything else to your card. That way, you can retrieve your images without over-writing them.
    6. Make sure you know what you are going to use this card for. Once you have set up everything and ensured it's all compatible, you still have to decide on speed. If you are using this for storing RAW images instead of JPEGs or HD video, step up to the faster class 6 speed format if you can afford it.
    7. If you are going to pay more for a faster speed, make sure your device can benefit from it. I've read, for example, that Kodak cameras are set to a fixed voltage and cannot go faster than standard speed. So the extra cash spent on Class 4, 5, or 6 is basically wasted.

    Conclusion

It's great to have several extra cards on hand just in case. This 4 GB card is a nice performer. If you have a high capacity camera (10 Megapixels or more) and are storing videos or RAW images, the extra cash for the 8GB card is worth it. Or you may want to step up to the larger 16 GB size that is now available.

    Enjoy!

  • The Fastest Card at This Price But...

    By A3W50TBG2QGIHP on 2007-06-27
This SDHC card is the fastest one in its price range but it may cause your images to be lost.

I use two of this in a Canon SD750. After the first use, all of the images were lost. (But thank God, I could rescue them with Lexar Image Rescue 2, a program better than its competitors) Then I formated the card(s) in the camera(s) with "low level format" option several times and there has been no problem after that so far.

I can suggest these points to potential owners of this card:
1- Use it very carefully, make backups if possible.
2- Format it several times before the first use with "low level format" option.
3- If you loose your images, don't panic. At this situation, It is very important not to take anymore pictures. If you take pictures after this point, you can overwrite your lost images and there can be no chance to get them back. Connect your card to your computer with a card reader (SDHC Compatible) and rescue them with Lexar Image Rescue.

  • Fast Card which Failed Me

    By A2MW1ZJOSDBE4D on 2007-06-29
Loved it for 3 months, fast, cheap, perfect. Then it lost 200 images, luckily not critical. I suspected a problem. Then I went on vacation, had to come home for something else, and uploaded the pictures. Out of maybe 300, it transfered 10 or so and then everything just dissappeared. No images on Disk. Not happy. Luckiliy it wasn't a wedding or something.

I have a Nikon D80, and it works great with my other cards. The Transcend is tagged for destruction unless I can return it or something.

  • Transcend 4G SDHC Class 6

    By A3GMGLPXZIFZBY on 2007-05-13
This Transcend 4G SDHC Class 6 memory card works very well with my Cannon S3 IS digital camera. It takes continuous video to full capacity at the highest resolution(640X480) It also takes pictures at the highest resolution with a pretty fast speed. It is up to the speed of a class 6 SDHC as far as I can tell. I have a 1G Sandisk Extreme that takes rapid fire pictures a little faster, but this Transcend 4G SDHC does very well in taking pictures quickly one after the other. It will hold over 31 minutes of continuous video at the highest resolution(640x480) for my camera. I recommend it to anyone who needs a high capacity SD card that has enough speed to do video and large picture files in a faster succession. It is at a great price. The only thing I can't answer to is as to how long it will last. I have only owned it a short time. My hope is that it will last for several years, but I think only time will tell.

  • Fast and roomy

    By A3EFSLCX8LO5X2 on 2007-04-01
works well with a 10 MP camera (PowerShot G7) - fits about 900 highest quality JPEGs. No problems shooting continuous video. You are much more likely to run out of battery power than space.

  • Excellent performance, solid compatability
    By A3TXQIOHXRCDFC on 2008-07-03
I purchased this SDHC, Class 6 card for my new Canon G9 about 4 months ago because I needed a high-speed SDHC card for the new camera. Since getting it, I have ended up swapping it between the Canon G9 and my SD800, depending on if I was going to an event with point-and-shoot requirements or if I could sling the G9 around my neck and use it.

The performance so far has been excellent, I've fired off a 45-second sequence of continuous shots on my G9 (10MP camera) before at a wedding and the card has no problem writing all that out and just letting me keep holding down the button and firing off shot after shot. When you consider the raw amount of bytes the camera is processing and writing during a continuous-shot session, it's pretty dang impression that it's writing out so many MB/sec.

The SD800, at 6MP, performs swimmingly as well but the real performance bar to clear was the G9, which it handles with ease. Also swapping the card between cameras in the middle of shooting sessions has never been a problem as the card seems to be compatible with all my SD-based Canons without issue. I've never had to reformat the card or anything like that.

The "no brainer" attribute of purchasing this card is the combination of performance, compatibility and price... you could buy 4 of these things and just swap them in and out if you are a serious photographer.

I get 600-800 shots at 10mp on a single card at about 4-6mb each picture so I really can't imagine you needing more than one of these unless you were a professional photographer shooting at like 12 or higher MP with a trigger finger. But in that case you probably want to play it safe and use more cards, incase any 1 of them has a failure.

That was a tip I heard from some photographer friends; that you never want to buy bigger than a 4GB card incase you fill it up and it fails, then you loose hundreds and hundreds of pictures at one time. So in most cases having a few 4GB cards seems to be the sweet spot between safety and convenience.

  • Watch out for compatibility
    By AIGFCV1T219I7 on 2007-09-06
Good price for 4G capacity. It doesn't work with my Palm TX PDA and my desktop card reader but it works with my Panasonics Lumix DMC-FX07 digital camera.

  • great value and price for digital cameras

  • Good Device, Eats Battery Power
    By A1F9YNY2KTBO5H on 2008-05-25
I bought this for my Amazon Kindle and I notice the Kindle now seems to use up battery power much faster. If I let the Kindle sit unused for a few days the battery "fuel guage" icon is usually down by at least a third. I suppose it uses microamps of power even when the Kindle is turned off.

Other than that, the card works fine. It shows up as a 3.7 Gb hard drive in Fedora 7 when I plug the Kindle into the USB port.

  • Works well - no issue
    By A2ONPFV7CB6W3S on 2007-07-23
Use this in a Panasonic Lumix DMC-FZ8K. This will hold lot's of pictures (around 1,000) at full size and quality. Speed seems reasonable. No issues so far.

  • Lifetime Warranty
    By A309TNZVJH7ORW on 2008-04-01
This card works great with my Kodak EasyShare Z812IS. I have not had any problems with this card. And you just can't beat the price. Also according to the paperwork I received with the card, it comes with a lifetime warranty.

    From the Transcend website:
Effective January 1st 2006 the following Transcend products are covered by this warranty for life, SD series, MMC series, CF series (except Industrial CF cards) memory cards and JetFlash series USB flash drives (except JetFlash 210).

  • So far so good....
    By A1F3BX0QXW760F on 2008-07-22
Well - I'm not really sure how one would review a memory card, except to say "hooray - it works!", or "boo - it doesn't work". So here goes... "hooray - it works!"

  • Works perfectly right out of box

Great product! I put in in my new Nikon D80 and started taking pictures. No problems.

  • Transcend - Flash memory card - 4 GB - Class 6 - SDHC
    By A3DT5X9JSFARME on 2007-06-13
The Transcend - Flash memory card - 4 GB - Class 6 - SDHC is a GREAT product!!! Sent by return mail by HiTech Market.

It is too bad Amazon.com's shipping policy imposed $8.00 shipping charges for a product small enough to put into a first class envelope and mail for just $0.41 (yes 41 cents)!

  • One terrific card
    By A3ABF2PP4UAVPI on 2008-02-09
This card does eveything they say about it. It's got tremendous capacity and it's plenty fast enough for 640 x 320 resolution 30 frame/sec videos on my Canon A560 camera. Of course it can hold tons of still photos. The price was excellent, even including the H&S charges. It arrived via US mail in only a few days. Love it.

    By A2HEPSU4XMAION on 2008-03-31
Watch Video Here: http://www.amazon.com/review/R1124AM3GJLB86 This Video using the Transcend 4gb card was done w/ an Aiptek A-HD 720p thru the A/V in as the recording cam, 4 bullet cams were mounted and wired to aiptek a/v in, the card preformed great no problems even doing 100mph around Toyota Speedway, you lose a little qual.on the video when compressed to upload to the web. but original footage and dvd's I make of the onboard footage are crystal clear. The Transcend 4GB is great as far as I'm concerned and I also plan to test the Transcend 8Gb in the near future.

  • 4 Gigs - Class 6 High Speed - Low Price!
    By A328L86EJB5QMP on 2008-05-30
This SD card works just fine in my Canon PowerShot SX100IS. I get 1117 shots at 8 megapixels, 1522 at 5MP, 2342 at 3MP, 3691 at 2MP, and over 9999 at .3MP. 6411 postcard & 1467 widescreen. Video shows 33 minutes 16 seconds at 640x480 30fps, 65 minutes 29 seconds on LP, and 92 minutes 16 seconds at 320x240 30fps. The camera shows the card as being 3.7 gigabytes in size after formating. As everyone else has mentioned, double check your device to make sure it can handle these newer SDHC cards. I also bought a Sandisk MicroMate SD/SDHC Memory Card Reader at Amazon, since my HP Deskjet won't recognize the newer SDHC cards. Works fine!

  • Great Value
    By A2Z0FAF7VR7KY on 2008-06-25
Increased the capacity of my camera a lot. Glad I ordered it to come soon after the camera arrived or I would have been greatly limited in the number of pictures I could take before I had to download and erase them.

  • Caution

  • Do not use for Readyboost
    By A1CQ9TY4AZE8ZW on 2008-03-21
This card caused blue screens in Vista. I am guessing that it is due to the unreliable nature of the card. If you are using Vista, this card is not for you. I will have to buy a relacement SanDisk...

  • Works Perfectly
    By A3EICLBR8QRNFQ on 2008-03-22
We have been using this SDHC card for about a month. So far it works perfectly. It should hold about 3000 pictures on our digital camera, but we have not nearly tested those limits.

Bottom line...this is a value-priced item that works exactly as it should.

  • Great storage, not always compatible
    By ALXZZTKRVRUA2 on 2008-06-02
Maybe it's lack of knowledge on my part, but I can only read the ocntents of this card, when it's inserted in the camera and I put the USB cable from the camera to the computer. My PC has a card reader unit and I've tried every card I have and they all work, except this one, maybe it's not suppouse to, but I find that a little frustrating 'cause I have to consume batteries to copy the photos from my camera to the PC and as it is a high capacity card it takes a lot of time and batteries to copy 1000 photos.

  • Great delivery and product
    By A239WOCWFY4JVY on 2008-08-08
Product was as described and appears to be working fine. Shipment was by first class mail and that was very speedy compared to UPS, FedEx, etc.

  • Excellent SDHC card, great price
    By AMKNPIDFLRFMP on 2008-08-20
I have been using Panasonic SDHC Class 6 4GB cards, and have been pretty happy with them. I decided to get this one just because of the low price and high ratings, and am pleased to find that I agree with the many 5-star reviews.

Some information I didn't see in the other reviews, in case it's of interest: I ran a write test with a big file on my computer, and saw write speeds consistently above 6MB/s, as you ought to expect for a Class 6. (Among other things, that means of course that your camera can get ready for the next shot just that much faster because it's spending less time waiting for the recording to be completed.)

I didn't bother with a read test, since read speed is rarely an issue.

A comment on SD card readers/writers. As many have said, older SD devices, including older cameras, will not work with SDHC cards. My old card adapter (Sandisk 8-in-1) hung when I put this chip in. But my newer adapters (a built-in slot, and an Edge All-in-1) worked just fine. So if you're having trouble, this is possibly the first thing to check.

  • Solid, reliable, and good price
    By A7SFRYSKQZ6ZY on 2008-09-07
I bought four of these cards for use in my Nikon D80 on a recent trip to southeast Asia. They did exactly what an SD card is supposed to do, and the speeds are relatively quick and the capacity is good for the price. What more can one say about a memory card?

I know some people have had trouble with this (and other) cards crashing, and all I can say is that I have never had that problem with any cards (I have only used Olympus XD cards, and Kingston and Transcend SD cards), but that I am careful to reformat the cards in the device I am using before the first use, and then after every time after I download from the card. From what I have read, that is the key to keeping cards from getting corrupted and crashing.

  • Created corrupted RAW files on G10
    By AOOTSP7GN30MI on 2008-10-24
When used with Canon G10, it created several corrupted files. I shot in RAW and after 15 shot, I tried to review and the picture shows up, took several more shots and when I tried to to review the previous picture that I can see before now have the big question mark on it and says "unidentified file". The card never left the camera! Took more pictures and then more files now has that dreaded questions mark.

When I got home and uploaded the files, those with the questions mark is now corrupted (has only 1/4 size, incorrect color etc).

I reformated the card several times, this same issue happened again.

I sent an inquiry to transcend USA 3 days ago and hasn't got any reply.

Card was formatted in camera several times before use. Camera works fine twith Kingston 6 SDHC 8GB.

If they responded, I might edit this review.
